Opinions are like <insert body part/area here>, everyone has one...
I've used both DuraLube and Prolong, and 'in my opinion', the
mail-order aspect of Prolong cancels out any real difference between
the two. I saw real world measureable results with Duralube, and have
not yet seen any radical changes with Prolong. Ok, maybe the 'feel' of
the Thunderbird after doing the pumpkin with Prolong, but maybe the
Duralube would have done the same. I don't know, I didn't try it.
I can get DuraLube at WalMart for half the Prolong price, and since I plan
on doing an oil change this weekend, I'll do another Duralube.
BTW, I did my JohnDeere 265 over a year ago, (DuraLube) and the oil is
still honey colored, it starts on the the 4th revolution everytime and
is used for my lawnmower, snowblower, wheelbarrow. I've never come up
with a good way to measure gas usage on the tractor, but then I'm not
concerned about that. I just don't want to have to rebuild it.
Like it or not, believe in it or not, that's your choice, but I believe
that it has improved the operation of my vehicles, and I have
data to prove it.
Your mileage would probably vary. (But it would most likely go UP! :-)

| Does anyone have comment on the new Puraltor oil filter "PureOne"?
I stopped in the local Advanced Auto Parts this weekend for Oil and a
Fram and noticed the PureOne display. They claimed to trap 96% over a
13 hour multipass test while Fram and others claim 96% over a 15 minute
singlepass test. There display also stated Other leading brands (read
Fram etc) drop to ~80% when tested in the 13 hour multipass test.
Since it was only $1 more than Fram I purchased one. Also see

Did I waste the extra $1 on this new Puraltor "PureOne" or not?

Phil, do you have a description of what the tests are?
It sounded to me, from your description, that Fram removed 96% in a
single 15 minute pass, and it took the Purolator filter multiple passes
and 52 times as long to remove the same amount. i.e. the Purolator is
junk. I assume this isn't the case or they wouldn't be advertising it.
My understanding would also be that a filter would do a better job the
longer it operated up until the point that it got so clogged that the
bypass valve opened and the oil ceased to be filtered.
What do the tests actually measure?

| The test is the Society of Automotive Engineers Test #J806.
The jist seems to be that both filters capture 96% of all contaminants
in the single-pass test (45 gal of control oil over about 15 min). But
in the multi-pass test (2500 gal of control oil over about 14 hours) the
PureOne continues to capture/trap 96% of contaminants and the others drop
down into the ~80-85% contaminant capture range.
There web page shows the single pass is 45 gal drum of oil pumped thru a
mixer (measured amount of contaminants added), then the filter, then out of
the filter into a measuring instrument. The multi-pass test seems to be
the same except the output from the measuring instrument is dumped back
into the sump drum forming a closed loop test.
Is it worth the extra buck?

"compression" in this note stream and found that notes .19, .59,
.217, .253 seem to provide information in the area you desire.

your note just hit me wrong. If you would have just left that

impatient person wanting others to do your work.

Learn to use

This will search six umptillion notes in about a femtosecond.
It really beats any search capacity $notes has to offer.
I searched +additive +compression and found good stuff in

Thanks for all the pointers.
Picked up a can of restore, next oil change (this weekend, if not
sooner) I will put it in. Different size cans for 4,6 or 8 cylinders.
So I got the 8 cylinder can (for a 302).
I can post results if anyone wants an opinion of it....

Do your homework. Don't impatiently ask a silly question and upset the

left arm. I stated my lack of knowledge in notes files. I didn't
realise the major upset it would cause when I asked a question. As I

P.S. I've slso heard of the Mystery Oil treatment. I used it alot in the
military for freeing rusted parts, general machine oil type lubes, etc. I don't
know what it's made of, but it worked pretty well. I just haven't dumped it into
the oil reservoirs of either of my cars!

| In 1971, I left Mass to go to Cal to seek my fortune (I returned 4
weeks later). However, along the Penn Tpke, I went into a service
station along the Pike and had an oil change done. The person inserted
a long needle-like probe into the dipstick hole and a machine sucked
out all the oil it could find. Then he poured a real thin oil in and I
ran the engine for about 2 or 3 minutes. Then he sucked the oil out
again. This second batch was really sludgy and dirty too. Finally, he
poured in the 4 or 5 quarts of new oil and I was on my way. The filter
was not replaced in this procedure and the car never was on a lift. It
was fast and not expensive, even though the station was on the Pike.
As I remember, he said the thin oil was like a sewing machine weight.
I have not seen a machine like that or heard of a similar service
since.

Hi Jim,
Is the mystery oil for cleaning out oil passage ways, or sealing them
up (piston rings, valve guides etc.) ?
My motor has bad rings, changed oil last night and added the restore.
Seventy five miles later still smokes the same. It does say it
guaruntees to notice the difference within 500 miles, so I guess it
may be too soon to say that it didn't work.

Periodically, I come across drill attachments that supposedly perform
the task you described. It is a pump mechanism that you attach to the
end of an electric drill. Prices seem to be in the $8-$10 range, as
best I can recall.
I've never used one and have no idea how effective it is. I wouldn't
be surprised if you could find one somewhere in the JC Whitney catalog.
Personally, I like to see the filter replaced every time the oil is
changed. It is designed to catch garbage, so you want to get that
stuff out of the vehicle at regular intervals.

The Mystery Oil I know is a very light machine oil. It has very good
penetrating properties which makes it good for cleaning, freeing rusted parts,
loosening caked 'n baked sludge, etc. So as a sealant it would fail miserably.
As for what will prevent your burning oil I think adding a restorative will only
buy you a little time. I think it's time to tear it down and fix the mechanical
problem. This could run you quite a bundle of $$ depending on the extent of
damage and required repair. You'll have to compare the cost of repair against
the remaining value of the car (both personal and financial) in order to make an
informed decision.

| Changing oil through the dip stick tube is done routinely on marine
engines where getting to a drain plug on an oil pan may be a chore or
where the risk of spilling it into the bilge needs to be avoided. You
can spend a lot of dollars for a special pump or do as described back a
few.

| Marine engines dip stick tubes go almost all the way to the bottom of the
oil pan, as far as I know auto's dont! The oil dip stick pumps
have a fairly small dia. tube that goes through the dip stick tube.
If you try to pump oil through the dpstk tube all you will get is air.

| Can a gear oil marked SAE75-90W G5 be used in place of straight
SAE90? I am thinking of switching the differential lube from
conventional to synthetic and the AMSOIL gear lube I found is
the 75-90W GL5, the manual recommend 90 GL5.
