| I got my flywheel back from Ted Wingate (?) in Hudson. He took my WW2
GMC 270 4 bolt flywheel ring gear (6 volt) and put it on a newer GMC or
Chevy 6 bolt flywheel (12 volt) and it fit! While he was at it, he
'kissed' the surface. The combo flywheel will be used on my 302 cid 160
hp engine that I will be puting into my deuce in a month or two. I am
hoping that the 6 volt starter with 12 volts (I run all of them that
way) has enough ump to turn the motor. The original flywheel was about
2" larger in diameter. That required a special (non-WW2) bellhousing
which I could not use. I will be going from 104 hp to 160 hp! It ought
to make quite a difference on the hills...

Mass., that picked up several from Devens and he has one of them
in front of this place for sale most of the time. I've never stopped
and looked 'cause of the hitch.

Nope, not Richard's - this is further out, about a half mile before
Bull Run on the east side of the road. The guy also used to dabble in
"antique and restored" autos - I looked at a Studebaker there, but it
was in pretty bad shape - lots of $$$ to get into shape. (Besides,
if its a Studebaker I want either a '53 or a '57 Golden Hawk.)

| If I was to have a redebaker, it would be a Golden Hawk also. What was
the highest cid and hp that they offered back then. The V8 looks a lot
like the Rambler back then which had as I recall 215 hp for 250 cid
with factory solid lifters and a 4bbl.

BTW a friend found 2 WW2 Studebaker Deuces in Austraila (sp) still in
the boxes as shipped. This is not one of those 'jeep' stories. The guy
want big, big $$ for them.

| Rambler came out with the 250/270 HP 327 in the '57 Rebel.
Chances are much better of finding a good Hawk, though. I
agree that a '53 Stude would also be nice -- preferably with
a V8, 3sp & OD.

| I extracted the #6 piston from the spare '24 Stude engine I have. This
is a straight six 289ci engine. There was no bearing material at the con
rod journal so it was a bit loose. I removed the end cap and took out
about 10 little shims which are used to get the proper clearance with the
bearing. The piston came up through the bore slowly with a few pieces of
wood and a hammer.
These pistons are huge! I was also amazed at the size of the rings when
it finally came out. The piston is 3.5" wide and 4.75" top to bottom.
It's 2.5" from crown to center of the wrist pin and 10" from the center
of the wrist pin to the center of the con rod journal.
There are 4 rings, from top:
3/8" tall (compression)
1/4" (oil)
1/4" oil
(wrist pin)
1/4" oil (near base of piston)
Also, the area around the ends of wrist pin are machined in slightly from
the regular diameter of the piston. Even with this, you can see the
sides of the ends of the wrist pins have been worn down a little.

Huge? the pistons in my stock hemi were 3 13/16" diameter, now they're 3
15/16" diameter.
You been smellin' foreign diesel fumes too long :-) :-)

| Are you sure the shims are supposed to be there? I would have
guessed that in the mid-twenties they were still using poured-in-place
bearings. Pre-machined shell-type bearings didn't come until later,
I thought. Perhaps the shims are from an earlier repair?

| I *think* the shims are proper, but I'll have to check the manual. It does have
poured bearings and I would think the shims are needed. If you had to shave
the bearing material down a little (to make it round again) you'd have to
take up the slack somehow.
Skip - after rebuilding the Isetta engine and the VW diesel, I guess any
'normal' piston would look large...

| I almost bought a 6 ton Brockway crane truck (10 WD etc) years ago. It
had a 855 cid Hercules flat head 6 cyl that had 6 x 7 bore and stroke.
The engine weighed more than my Cav wagon. It had broken a con rod that
had taken out both sides of the block. It could pick up my Deuce fully
loaded 15k# with the boom at 10'. I looked at the specs and concluded
that if I put a Chev 350 in with an auto behind it and ran the xfer in
low range all the time I would have had the same HP and torque as the
original 855. Alas, $1200 at that time prevented me from buying it.
They cut it up...

| The shims are proper. I looked in the shop manual for the '24 and they
describe the process for putting in new bearing material, Prussian Blue (a dye
I presume) and checking for high spots on the bearings. You alter the number
of shims as you replace or shave the bearing material down.

| A spending weekend last:
I bought a GMC 270 cid .030 over recently rebuilt engine (145 hp) for
$450. I have to pick it up in Augusta ME in a couple of weeks with my
Jeep and a borrowed trailer.
Saturday I made an offer for a 1942 GMC deuce, the twin to mine
seperated since I bougth mine 17+ years ago. It has 12k original miles
and comes with the shop (box) van for the back. I think mine originally
had that shop van because of the gas tank it came with. The truck runs
great and recently had brakes. They guy will let me know this week.
The Wal-Mart Annex (AKA garage) is filling fast...

| My 1987 M151-A2 AM General 1/4 ton truck (AKA Jeep) has been making
unnatural noises from the back end for a little while. I was suspecting
an axle U-joint (4 in the rear). Monday night I 'shimmed' the right
side rear wheel so that it would be going in the same direction as the
rest. It was towed in about 1/2-3/4" when a straight edge was laid to
the front wheel. It had been pretty tough on tires mounted there.
Anyways, yesterday morning with the thing banging pretty badly on
shifts, all of a sudden there was a loud band then a constant hammering
sound equal to the wheel rotation. An Axle U-joint had disnetergrated
on the drives side. I stopped and put on my handy-dandy coveralls and
proceded to remove the axle shaft and use the front wheel drive to get
home. It is much quieter using only the front diff.
I have some work to do Sunday...

| I pulled the engine (Chev 261) out of my GMC tanker Sunday. It had been
sitting for over a year. I had just gotten it going with the Chev (what
a job putting that into a GMC!) when it stopped moving under its own
power. I had suspected that the front shaft of the trany had broken off
even with the bearing. I was correct. I could look into the gear and
see the rear shaft and pilot bearing! Before I had bought this truck
someone (I believe) had pulled it and dumped the clutch to 'free' the
engine as it had set for quite a few years. The bellhousing (cast iron)
had a crack and 3/4 in separation in it when I got it. When I put the
Chev 261 into it, the nose piece was broken on the tranny. I looked at
the input shaft before I replace it and it looked OK - guess not!
The formerly shreeking GMC 270 will probably go in this weekend...

| I pulled the clutch and flywheel last night from the shreiking GMC 270.
It is a mystery to me: Two bellhousing bolts behind the flywheel had
backed out and apparently were hitting the flywheel. One bolt was
broken off and now that I think about, there may have been one bolt
just floating around in there...? This was apparently put together by a
mainiac...

| We attended a Studebaker Meet in Vicksburg, MS over the weekend (we drove the
'71 VW, not the '24 Studebaker) and found out that the 1997 Glidden Tour will
be held in Thomasville, GA (near the FL border) in October. This is probably
as close as it will get to us in the next 10 years so we're making plans to
attend.
The Glidden Tour is 5 days of touring, 100-120 miles per day. No racing or
timed sections like the Great American Race, just casual touring. If you
finish all 5 days you get a trophy or something.

rt 225 just west of rt 27, near where westford, acton, carlisle mass
meet.
i don't know the car or the owner. it looked to be in pretty good
shape from the single glance i got. looked like late 40s or early 50s.

| I brought my new baby home this past WE. My 1942 GMC 'Deuce' followed
closely behind my 1943 GMC 'Deuce' (on the tow bar). The truck tracked
perfectly all the way except for the last corner in my driveway
(gravel) wherein the front wheels went the other way.
The real test will be to bring back the body (a shop van about 4,000
lbs) and get it ont the truck. The truck is tight with only 12,000
original mile upon it.
