I receive a BMW catalog from Bavarian Motorsport every 6 months or so and take
the time to thumb through it comparing BMW parts prices with Volvo parts
prices. This includes clutches, alternators, waterpumps, brake parts, exhaust,
etc. The 7-series Bimmers were very high on some of these items.

Jim
190.982735iL Info.POWDML::SELIGTue Apr 08 1997 14:4231
The 7 series has some of the same driveline problems that the big-6
5 series car demonstarte.....namely:

Fan Clutch
Brake Shudder (usually brake discs)
Auto Trans overhaul common at 125-150K if fluid not changed regularly
Suspension play at 80K+ (tie rods, control arm bushings, ball jnts)
Exhaust system last 2-5 years depending on use

Some typical aftermarket parts pricing taken from BMWCCA Roundel:

Bosal exhaust (cat back) $495.
Brake Rotors (Fr/Rr) $65/40
Repco brake pads (Fr/Rr) $39/24
Thrust rod bushing set $40
Hood shock $20
Water hose set (complete) $169
Water Pump $53
Bosch Cap/Rotor $64
Ign Wire Set $99

Al Legerlotz (previous CarBuffer) owns a 90ish 735i and you would
probably find some entries under BMW regarding a failed head gasket but
I beleive this was not typical for this year/model.

Let me know if you have other specific questions.

_Roundel_ is probably your best source on maintenance headaches
on the 735il, or any, older BMW. However, short of an article
devoted to used 7 series (which I don't remember offhand, but
I don't pay much attention to the 5/7 series stuff), then it's
down to the "Hack Mechanic" piece and letters to the magazine from
owners wishing to share experiences. And THAT means lots of hunting
and pecking thru issues. I have probably 15 years or so of issues
if you're interested in thumbing mine (I'm in the GMA tho). Kratz

BMW of NA was apparently introducing new models at a test facility
somewhere in the swamps of Jersey yesterday. Lots of press and
cameras. They water down the pavement, but apparently miss a spot
or two. (What looked to be) a 5 series Touring model attempts to
do a spin out on the wet pavement. Instead, things don't quite work
out as planned: it hits a dry spot and proceeds to violently flip,
absolutely destroying the car (the driver appeared to be ok).

Perhaps this is where the term "spin control" originated? ;-)

190.988A new BMW owner in search of tiresKDCA01::STRUP_OPERFri Apr 18 1997 12:5523
As long as the mechanic I have selected gives his blessing, I will
as of Monday be the hopefully proud owner of a 1988 1/2 735i with
53,000 miles on it. I took it for a test drive yesterday and if
was smooth quiet and solid. It shifted so smoothly when driven
normally I couldn't even feel the shift. When you go for a downshift
it was solid with no slippage (but not harsh). The steering seemed
to be tight and there were no noises from the suspension going over
bumps. The brakes stopped it in a straight line with no pulling.

It does need new tires though. The ones on it now (original??) were
Pirelli P600's.I was thinking about the Continental CV90's
(225/60 VR15) since this car won't see winter.
I want to keep it quiet and smooth.

The tire rack list these under the High Performance type along
with the Pirelli P7000,P6000 and Yokahama A509.

Would this be a good choice of should I stick to one of their
Grand Touring tires (Bridgestoen Turanza, Continetal CH95,
Michelin MXV4?

I won't be putting very much mileage on it so treadwear isn't

Back when I was looking for another car, I joined the BMWCCA, Volvo Club or
America, and the Peugeot Owner's Club. The BMWCCA had the best magazine
(Roundel) of the three by far. It and the Volvo magazine had information I
could use to purchase, maintain and repair a car. As a down side, I felt the
BMWCCA magazine tended to cater to the wealthy BMW owner who spends gobs of
money on a newer BMW and accessories, rather than to someone like me who wanted
to spend a paltry sum of under $10K on a Bimmer. I would suggest joining to
see what it's like.

The independent BMW mechanic I took the 1988 735i to gave it his
blessing. It does have the correct mileage on it, the body is straight
and clean and hasn't been in an accident. It did need some work
based on the age of the vehicle though.

It needed the following which according to the mechanic were normal
based on the age of the vehicle. He also mentioned that the vehicle
seems to have been serviced properly and that no hack jobs had been
done on it. After hearing this I was actually able to sleep well
that night.

Idler arm, muffler, rear subframe bushings, fan speed control, valve
lash adjustment and a couple of other small things. I got the dealer
to lower the price enough to allow me to take it to the BMW guy
rather than their generic mechanic.

I called the tire rack and one of the tires the recommended was
the Conti CH95 touring. These are the model Mercedes is fitting
to their S class currently. At $63 each they are probably what I
will end up getting.

Going from the 92 Grand Voyager (frame made out of playdough) to
this car is like stepping into a sensory deprevation chamber. Its
so quiet and smooth and solid. And the seats must be factory Recaro's,
they have that firmness that at first you think will make them
uncomfortable on long trips but is in fact the exact opposite.

I will have to read back through the rest of the note to figure
out how best to care for the leather etc.

lash adjustment.
Anyone know the cold intake/exhaust clearance for this thing? I
gather its the same as for the 535 of the same year. Even though
the valve lash was just adjusted I would still like to get under
the valve cover and have a look anyway once it get warn enough
outside to actually work on the car.

Since its only going to see summer duty I switched over to 5W50

Is that a rubber O-ring? My '93 325 has a long (7"?) bolt that fastens the
lid onto the "canister" that contains the oil filter cartridge. At the end
of the bolt there is a small rubber O-ring.

Where is the vent/breather on the 735i differential? When I changed
the warm differential fluid it pratically shot out of the drain

This would lead me to believe that the breather/vent (if there

it seems as if BMW's are experiencing warped/worn rotors with the

I've had good luck with Brembo rotors on my Volvos. They are a performance
European brake part company that actually does more business on BMW's than on
Volvos. The nice thing is they are less than one half the price of Volvo OEM
rotors. For brake pads, you should do more asking around since specific brands
of pads work better on some vehicles than others.

plan to autocross or do driving schools, I'd suggest Repco Metal
Masters. The Metalmasters have to heatup a little before they reach
peak braking....as a result they can be a little hard for street
driving. Either pad is relatively clean (low brake dust) and thus
friendly to your alloy wheels.

I'd suggest getting Ballo oem rotors....I know that the Ultimate
Garage (http://www.ultimategarage.com/home.html) carry's both Repco and
Ballo. Another vendor is Eurasian (800-8248814). They sell BMW oem
rotors and repco....and have excellent prices. But their track record
on handling returns and credit card adjustments is bad among BMWCCA
members. Here are prices from the most recent Roundel ad by Eurasian
for '87-on 735i,L models.

Dunno about front, but I went Brembo pads and rotors on the
rear of my 7. The job was dead easy since they had recently been
removed to do the safety inspection. Not expensive either (compared
to BMW parts)

Several things to consider replacing when doing brake work on BMWs....

Replace the brake wear sensors....they are about $5 ea. I opted to
remove my sensors since I replace pads fairly often for track use....
you can simply splice the wires together elimating the sensor and then
tie wrap it out of the way.

Buy replacement allen screws that hold the rotor onto the hub. There is
one screw per wheel. The worse case scenario is that the screw is stuck
in place and that the allen fitting is rounder over.....with any luck a
combination of pentrating oil and impact tool will jar it loose without
having the drill it out and retap the rotor.

BTW, another pad to consider is Performance Friction.....the
street/track version. It is less expensive than the Repco and does take
heat cycling to break-in. Their #80 and #83 pads are much harder and
should only be used for track purposes. They are available from All BMW
Parts (http://lochnet.com/bmw/bmwpart/noframe.cgi#top).

The place that carries the Brembo front rotors had them at $70 each
with Kevlar mettalic pad $67 (made by Friction tech).
What size is that Allen screw? Do the pads need shims, anti squel
goop or is just a matter of pull out old, pop in new? Can you just
reuse the sensors?

>> with Kevlar mettalic pad $67 (made by Friction tech).

These are the pads I'm running on both of my Volvos. They work great and have
low dust. In fact on my sedan, I tow a 2000 pound pop-up camper through
the White Mountains of NH and I have had zero problems or complaints with
the pads or rotors.

From the picture's in the Chiltons manual it looks like the front
brake rotor on the 735 doesn't actually contain the wheel bearings
but rather is attatched by an allen screw to a seperate carrier that
contains the wheel bearings.
Thus you can remove and install a new rotor without having to worry
about the removal and installation of the wheel bearings.

Is this indeed the case? If so I think I can handle the replacement
of the pads and rotors myself.

No matter which way it is, you can probably handle it yourself. I have
to remove the bearings on my 87 Volvo and I have the slip on rotors
for my 88 Volvo. The 87 takes a little more time, but it's still fairly
easy and straight forward.

190.1012Them's the brakes..POLAR::ROBINSONPByte meThu May 29 1997 10:3510

I suspect the Allen heads screws are a BMW-only part. Try
not to wreck them. Many times the sensors will crack when they
are removed from the pad, hence the recommendation to replace.

It's not a big deal to dispense with the sensors altogether,
especially if you inspect the pad thickness as a routine once
or twice a year anyway. They are not that hi-tech.

190.1013More Brake Suggestions....POWDML::SELIGThu May 29 1997 12:1624
The Allen screws that hold the rotors to the hub are BMW only (
possibly a VW or Mercedes cross-reference part # available. When you
replace the Allen screw be sure to coat it with anit-seize compound.

Your manual is correct....the rotors are like "top-hats" that sit over
the hub. On mid 80's on BMW 5/6/7 series the bearing are a sealed
bearing unit. The bearing units are part of the hub assembly and when
bearing replacement is required you replace the entire hub/bearing
unit. Mailorder the hubs for ABS cars run about $85 and for non-ABS
earlier models around $55. I have 140k on my '87 535is and the wheel
bearing show no significant wear.

BTW, a recommended brake upgrade is to replace the oem rubber brake
line to the calipers with stainless braided kevlar lines available from
Eurasian (see earlier note). The are an improvement over the previous
generation stainless braided brake line in the the kevlar provides even
greater rigidity and hence less brake line flex.

BTW, don't forget to flush/bleed your brake fluid with fresh Dott 4
fluid at least every other year or yearly if you do track events.
Either Castrol LMA or ATE Blue 200 seem to be popular among the track
junkies.

Do you even need the allen screw? Aren't the rotors ultimately held in
place by the lug bots?
190.1015POWDML::SELIGThu May 29 1997 12:256
The Allen screws are to hold the rotors in place so that the lug holes
in the rotor line up with the lug holes in the hub. There's a good
chace that you'd loose that alignment of lug holes when you throw the
wheel/tire onto the rotors and rotatet it. Remmeber, the BMW we are
talking about do not have wheels studs and lug nuts.......hence the

Same as the VW's, it would seem. They also had lug bolts, and the
rotors will be just as secure without the allen screw [which is no
more than a set screw for alignment purposes].

190.1017Motul DOT 5.1 synthetic brake fluidKDCA01::STRUP_OPERThu May 29 1997 12:439
As far as brake fluid goes I was thinking of trying Mutol DOT 5.1.
From the description is a synthetic (non silicone) replacement
fluid that is compatible with DOT 3/4 fluid so that you have to
flush the entire system with alchohol as with silicone fluid.
I think its even a nice yellow color as well.
It doesn't have the hygroscopic tendency that the regular DOT 3/4
fluids do. Since I will only be putting on about 6000 miles a year
on this car is a flush every two years sufficent?

190.1018OoopsKDCA01::STRUP_OPERThu May 29 1997 12:441
I think its supposed to be MOTUL.
190.1019Why hygroscopic??KDCA01::STRUP_OPERThu May 29 1997 12:575
Anyone know why brake fluid has always been hygroscopic? You would
think that when they came up with the specification for brake fluid
they would have wanted it Not to absorb moisture.
Unless is supposed to do this to prevent pure water from getting
in the lines and then freezing.
190.1020BUSY::SLABAudiophiles do it 'til it hertz!Thu May 29 1997 13:394

And there's also less of a chance of the water causing rusty lines
if it's absorbed [and therefore "diluted"] by the brake fluid.

190.1021no such chemical?STARCH::HAGERMANFlames to /dev/nullFri May 30 1997 10:3912
Perhaps there is no chemical that has all the desired features, so
the less important ones get dropped off...

- low cost
- not excessively carcinogenic
- low, constant viscosity over extremely wide temperature range
- non-corrosive to associated components

.................

- non hygroscopic
- doesn't eat paint
190.1022735i brakes were the easiest I have doneKDCA01::STRUP_OPERThu Jun 05 1997 09:5122
Well the front brake job went very well. Took about 1 hour to replace
both rotors and pads. I guess the last time this was done they did
it right since all the bolts (even the small allen head one that
holds the rotor to the hub) appear to have had anti-sieze on them
since they came out very smoothly.
Well attempting to remove the wear sensor on the driver side the
back part of it broke so that it wouldn't stay in place on the new
pads so I just left it intact and nylock tied it to the brake hose
so that its up and out of the way. It looks like I could put a new
one in without having to remove the caliper so if the mood strikes
me I will pick one up and install it whenever I have that wheel
off again.

I did apply some of the blue anti-squeel material to both the back
of both the inner and outer pads even though this wasn't actually
mentioned in the shop manual. Would there be any reason NOT to have
done this?? The original pads seem to have had what looks like
antisieze on the back of the pads.
It wouldn't take me long to scrape off the anti-squeel if it shouldn't
be on one/both of these pads.

Somebody here at SHR has a new Z3 out in the east parking lot. I
couldn't help it this morning and parked my Miata across from it, with
the top down and tonneau cover on. (Bimmer doesn't have one, as far as
I know.) I hope the BMW owner doesn't get too jealous when he sees a
REAL SPORTS CAR in the same lot as his poser... :*)

(I just hope it doesn't rain--the cover isn't very water tight...)
