update number (whatever):
I flipped the air-filter cover upside-down to facilitate more
airflow to the carb (I was suspicious that it might not be getting enough
air for some reason). Acceleration was helped quite a bit, but the
hesitation problem is still there. Weird. Engine sounds good with the
increased airflow, tho'. When I can hear the air being sucked into the
carb (when I stomp on the accelerator), it raises my testosterone
level. ;*)
I'll keep posting these little updates. It'll be fun to go back and
re-read this when I do find the fix.

| Intake noise. Ah..... if you don't have headers on your car
the intake noise is often a heck of a lot louder than the exhaust.
I remember when my Z/28 was still stock, the intake noise was a gutsy
low almost chainsaw like noise, and the exhaust was a burble. Step on
the loud pedal and the chainsaw would really rip!
One night I needed to make a hasty exit from downtown Springfield
and went down this road inbetween 2 buildings. The echo was
AwEsOmE!

Nope...no headers on my beast. I flipped the air-filter cover back
over (right side up) since it didn't seem to improve anything other
than acceleration (which isn't a problem anyhow). {sigh} back under the
hood again...:)

Timing question:
It appears my car has a timing "sensor" mounted next to the timing
marks above the harmonic balancer. According to my timing gun
instruction manual, some cars are timed via adjusting this sensor
rather than rotating the dist cap. Unfortunately, my cruddy Chiltons
manual doesn't say anything about the sensor and the timing gun
instructions don't say how to adjust it via the sensor. I threw the
timing light on anyway (with the vacuum advance disconnect/plugged) and
the mark on the balancer appears to be hitting dead center of the
timing marks (I have to figure out how to get my hand in there to clean
the timing marks so I can actually READ them).
I really REALLY don't think timing's off since the car idles
just fine at 500rpm (my past experience says a mis-timed car definitely
won't idle properly). I think my next step is going to be to try and
adjust the fuel/air mixture screws (lean it out a bit). On the
Rochester carb, does one turn the screws in to lean it out? All carbs
I've worked on in the past were this way, but I know some are exactly
opposite.

Hey, how about an easy problem for once? :*) I'm trying to get the
window roller off the door so I can get into the locking mechanism (the
door is locked and won't unlock and I hate climbing in the passenger
side door). Is there some special trick to this? It's been a LOOONG
time since I've had to remove one of these, and the last one I did had
a nice screw in the center (this doesn't). I've tried prying, but it
doesn't budge. Is there some kind of a spring clip on the shaft?

| There is a c clip attached to the roller. Carefully pry the handle
away from the door trim and using a flashlight, look down towards the
center of the shaft and you will see the 2 slots on the shaft that
hold the clip. You can get a special tool at the autopart store for
$3 that will push the clip off, then the handle comes right off.

picked up the tool today. $4 at autopalace....

fixed the lock. Simply a matter of pulling the inside panel off so
I could force the mechanism. A liberal dosing of STP spray lube
loosened things up considerably (lots o' rust in there) and now the
latch/lock works well. Yehaw...no more climbing out the passenger side
door. :)
