| I have an 89 Chev Cav that I just pick up.
The fan on the heater works in all speeds. The problem
that I'm having is that all the air is comming out of
the vents. If I put it on the defrost it comes out the
vents, or if I put it on heat it comes out the vents.
Any ideas that a non mechanical person should check
before bringing to a shop.
This car also has AC if that helps in diagnosis.

Sounds like someone knocked the vacuum hose off the port on the manifold or
the hose has a crack or burn in it. You have no vacuum to the control
assembly

in the typical control, you move the lever to select where you want the
air to go. there is a flexible cable attached to the other end of the lever.
a flexible cable is the wire within a coiled wire or other covering, such as
the thing that connects the control on a lawn mower to the carb.
the other end of the cable is fastened to the physical device that
diverts the air to the proper place.
the outside of the cable has to be held firmly in place at both ends
or the control will not work. it will stay in whatever position it
was in when the cable got loose.
that is the most likely failure mode. other modes are possible.
you may be able to see what is wrong by sticking your head under the dash
with a strong light, but i doubt it (i don't know the model).
you probably have to pull out much of the dash or console to get at it.
then tighten down the part that came loose, and the other end too.
check that it works properly before reassembly.
put it back together, and enjoy.
it is not much worse than a "some assembly required" household product,
such as a bicycle, or swing set. it may take longer, but the good thing
is the vehicle is drivable all the while. i don't recall any special tools,
but you may need a very short or offset screwdriver.
some times the outer covering of the control cable is a hard, slick
plastic. you may want to increase the grip so you do not have to repeat
the job so soon. perhaps rough up the plastic with sandpaper.
or make some small teeth in the clamp.
don't be surprised if a garage charges for 4 or more hours labor to do it.

i was composing .202 while skip entered .201.
if .201 is about the vents only problem in .200,
try that first. it sounds much easier.
