I hate it when you take your measurement, and you see that
you lost some size (which is a good thing) everywhere, except
the calves. Instead the calves got bigger! I don't want
my calves bigger. They're big enough. As it is my jeans
are always tight around the calve. So much so, I can't wear
high boots under my jeans. If I manage to get the boots on
(after a struggle), wear them for a few hours, then take the
boots off, I have these lovely lil bruises from where the
top to the boots where (these are western cowboy boots I'm

rows in front of a mirror and one of the coed teams cut infront of me
and started checking herself out in front of me. A tad distracting, not
to say the least that its kind of rude. Albeit there was 10 feet
between the mirror and the stand I was using, but you would think it is
obvious not to keep doing that while someone is lifting and trying to

I hate it when you realize that you're doing too much and
one of the solutions is to quit the gym.
After 3wks of a hetic workout schedule, my body slammed
on the brakes. I'm currently sick (hack-hack), and I
know it's from my busy schedule with not enough time to rest.

I've been enjoying teaching the k-b aerobics classes and
I don't ever plan to leave my martial arts training. I
do however have to cut down on the amount of classes I've
been teaching. I teach 5 mornings a week and 1 night.
Though I've had a couple of weeks that I've taught atleast
8 classes in one week, then my two nights of martial arts
on top of that, and lets not forget getting up for the
gym and being there at 4:30-4:45a.m. each morning (except Mon).

If I drop going to the gym, then I get an hour extra of
sleep time and not as much wear and tear on the muscles.

I just wish I could do it all....

I know what you mean about wishing there was more time in the day for
the fun stuff, but like all high performance machines, you can't run
them full bore 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You really need to give
them a rest and let them restore or else serious injuries will begin.

Just decide what in your life gives you the greatest joy then let go
the rest. I know I often times complicate my life with too many
things, everytime that happens I have to sit back and uncomplicate it
by just focusing on the things that are key to me.

No no no reg. You don't really EJNOY all those things. This decadent
society has programmed your head to BELIEVE those things are enjoyable.
do not give in to the programming. Think for yourself!

Resistance is NOT futile. You WILL NOT be assimilated!

This is what you really prefer : crackling cold mornings, a nice long
cross-coutry ski, hammering away at the iron in a frosty gym, lots of
cool, clear water, a huge fresh fruit salad and grilled vegetables,
and a relaxing dip in a hot tub at the end of a full day of hard work.
Ahhh. There. Doesn't that feel better?

Resistence is futile, I am assimilated.

Good single malt scotch, an excellent Ashton Cigar, a good book, a warm
sunny beach with lots to look at is definitely heaven. But,
unfortunately not something to be done on a daily basis, but an
excellant way to spend a vacation doing when your taking two weeks off
    from the gym for R&R.

The rest of the time, drinking cold water and lots of it, pumping iron
eating healthy and watching my kids grow is definitely my typical program.

When I said focus on the things that make life right, I meant it and

When it was placed in front of me, he 'whispered' (that's a joke - 7

Check out Dante's Peak. Mediocre plot supporting some excellent special effects
and decent action.

Couldn't tell if Linda Hamilton kept her conditioning after T2; costuming kept
her well covered because Dante's Peak takes place in a cool climate.

okay, okay already! whip me! beat me! make it hurt sooo goooood! sorry for that
momentary lapse, but yes- hard work and decent dieting is thr 'right' way to go
however i don't like it one bit, i tell ya!

and brian- don't make drinking such a bad thing! and definitely don't feel
quilty (unless it's a sixpack/bottle a day habit); there has been much
scientific evidence to support that a drink or 2 a day or so is very beneficial
for our bodies and longevity. thes you kids responsible drinking and the
benefits of it and try not to demonize it. yes, much has been found that one
only needs to drink grape juice for the heart disease prevention help, but it's
the alcohol (rye, hops, barley, etc and the fermentation of such that is
desireable as well)

so, ihiw i don't feel as sore as i expected after getting my arse back to the
gym after a winter layoff.

228.562I disagree... so what else is new?HOTLNE::CORMIERWed Feb 12 1997 08:4213
    reg,
What evidence has there been in conjunction with those studies that
show what effect a couple of drinks a day have on the REST of the body?
If you can get the same benefits with good diet and cardiovascular
exercise, why put a toxic substance into your body? The problem I have
with these studies is they only focus on one aspect. If you routinely
drink 2 drinks a day, your heart may be in tip-top shape, but your
liver may be full of holes. You can get grains and fermentation from
other foods. Why take the risk? I'm not saying total abstinence. A
nice glass of wine, a single malt, etc. - life's little pleasures. But
treat them as an unusual treat - not a daily constitutional.
    Off my soapbox.
    Sarah
228.563HOTLNE::BURTWed Feb 12 1997 09:5420
not knowing exactly how scientific the studies are or whether they monitored
long term health/body parts effects, but i've read a lot of literature
discussing the "medicinal value" of an alcoholic beverage consumed regularly.
some good points of interest to note are all the vodka drinking Russian
centarians and our own country's 'moonshiners' (which may also stem from the
fact that those people consume large quantities of yogurt or other bacteria
laden foods).

and not pick a fight, but i really don't believe one's liver will get
perforatted with wholes, otherwise a whole lot of people would be under medical
supervision. the sad thing is, we only hear the few cases that the media wishes
to hype to fit someone's agenda; average those cases in with the population as a
whole that has 1 or 2 drinks every day or 2 and i'll bet the problem would seem
insignifcant (f not non existant). most people can and do whatever they choose
to do in life with moderation, the ultra entusiasts go overboard and the
extremists use those misguided soles to "prove a point".

gotta fly, i need a Pinch.

    Here's a good one for ya's...

I just got booted out of the DECFitRoom out here in Kanata cause I
wasn't using the crappy "buddy" sysstem!!! Why am I P/O'd? What do I
look like a moron? I've been there for a year and nothing has gone
wrong! I had a perfectly good system by doing call-ins with the
Security desk...whom I work with. I would gladly get a buddy if I
found someone who took it even remotely serious. None of this would
have happened if a couple of newbies had kept their snitches to
themselves. So a couple more people just got put on my $#!+ list!

They also claimed that my year long membership (that was only 4
months old when they closed down) was no longer valid because a new
Fitness instructor took over?!?! Bite me, my contract was with
    Digital, not the instructor.

Keep eating, any body builder trying to pack on some serious
size has to go well beyond a maintainance diet. Just eat several smaller meals.
There are a lot of protein powders out there that have come a long way in terms
of digestability. I know I've had problems before, but since I started using
Designer Protein I haven't had any, it's very easy on the gut.

I'm glad there's a topic called "I Hate it When" because I've got to blow
  off a little steam.

I usually do my workouts at the YMCA early in the morning but I had to
switch my schedule temporarily and do a Sunday afternoon workout.
After I finished a great workout, I go back to my locker, put in my key,
open the door and see my billfold halfway out of my pocket. When I look
inside, I find the ones are still there but the 20's and 10's are all gone.
Some creep took me for about 80 or 100 bucks. I guess it's possibly that I
didn't securely latch the door but I don't think so. The locks are not
that sophisticated and I think someone either picked the lock or had some
kind of skeleton key. Almost everyone that I've met at the gym are great
people but now I've got to change what I do when I go for a workout because
  of some jerk.

  Grrrrrr !

Yep, I reported it to the management on Wed. I was told the manager would
call me back but I haven't heard from him/her yet. In Colorado Springs,
there are 2 Y's. One downtown and a newer one on the north east side of
town. Both have excellent weight rooms. The one downtown is busier and
has signs all over that say, don't leave valuables in the lockers. The one
on the northeast has no signs like that. I've been going there for almost 3
years without any problems. But I go early in the morning and I've got a
feeling that most thieves are still in bed at that time. Maybe that's why
I never had any problems or heard of any problems until I went in the middle
of the afternoon on a Sunday.

Yes, Brian, they didn't take my wallet or credit card. And surprisingly,
they left the one dollar bills. I think they wanted me to think I hadn't
been ripped off, at least until I left the Y. That way, I wouldn't know where
I had been ripped off and thus it would be harder to find the bad guy.

One thing is for sure, since the creep made some fast money, I'm sure he'll
be back. I'll take additional precautions from now on.

ihiw: a physical therapist is assigned to me that is 1/3 my size and has the
strength of a hamster. thought i was getting some sports injury therapy, but
like any good hmo that uses the facility best designed for 'its' needs, i am
stuck with the same old wimpy therapy center that doesn't really know how to
work with sports related injuries; i'm not saying that the folks aren;t
knowledgeable in biomechanics and which muscle group does this etc, but it's one
of those review you personal activity history and "my, you really are active; i
really don't know what to tell that would slow you down".

it was totally comical for anyone watching as this tiny little person attempted
to strecth, move and manipulate my body; the table was way too high for her and
she put herself into a dangerous situation by using a stool to climb up on and
attempt to work with me.

i'm a little concerned about the eval as the exercises i was given to do seem to
have made the problem worse; after tomorrow, if it's not feeling any better, i
am going to call and let off steam.

i don't see why your doctor (of whom mine is intune with me) would continue to
send me to 'their' pt clinic for sports related injuries instead of bucking up
the referral for a real sports injury therapy center! and i've expressed this
before!

i don't see why the pt clinic would assign someone to a patient without finding
out some other pertinent details FIRST.

as an aside: aren't pt's usually trained medical professionals? why is it so
nerve racking to check someone out in the underwear vs shorts? especially if i
wore my exercise shorts, which are spandex and much more revealing? [i was told
to bring shorts with me and i really didn't think i needed them in a medical
building.]

worse off: the pt they want to have check me out next time is FAT! i'm sorry- i
just truly believe that a physical therapist should be in shape, the epitome of
what it should look like to be fully functioning and capable of keeping your
body healthy. the medical industry has become so unprofessional like, it just
goes to show how much of a couch potatoe nation we've become.

    about it.!!
228.604PCBUOA::BAYJJim, PortablesThu Apr 10 1997 15:5755
I used to think this way. However, I've had enough experiences with
the health professions that I've started to, if not sympathize, at
    least understand the situation better.

There are a lot of jobs in which you wouldn't think twice about how the
job holder dresses, or what personal habits they have. I guess the
stereotypical one that comes to mind would be a sanitation worker.
Another I have familiarity with is coal miners. The stereotype is that
these are poor, hard-luck types, with little good in their life, and
smoking, drinking, and reclining in front of the tube are just how they
    cope.

Interestingly enough, these stereotypes are pretty far off the mark.
The people you stereotypically thik of as "low class" tend to have very
high self esteem and a lot of pride and energy, and take pretty good
care of themselves, if for no other reason than their line of work.

Health care. Now *thats* a different story. I've never been in health
care, but I've worked in a pharmacy (Dad ran the joint). Funny thing
about pharmacies - the majority of their clientele are sick! Isn't
that odd! And of course, the same goes for other areas of health care.
At least by the time they come in the drug store they are ambulatory,
rather than laying on a stretcher missing pieces.

Do you know what the suicide rate is in the medicla profession? Its
high. Why? Because its depressing. After seeing the walking wounded
all day long, and every body fluid that never should have been visible,
you don't tend to go home walking on a cloud because of all the good
you've done. Sure, there's some of that, but mostly you are burned out
knowing you're going to do it again tomorrow.

Consequently, health care people, including doctors, tend to have very
bad personal habits, and to not take very good care of themselves (Dad
smoked right up until Mom died of lung cancer). They get a certain
amount of status from being in the medical field, but its not as pretty
    as it sounds.

The end result, is that a lot of health care people are technicians. I
am convinced that this goes double for doctors. They practice an art
day in and day out. I consider computer programming to be much more
exiting then lancing boils. "Duh, gee, I think I'll make this one look
    like a rabbit!".

I understand your frustration. Boy, do I. You expect to go to a
doctor, and like a surrogate mother, expect them to "make it all
better". Reality is, they don't have all the answers. And they have
    most of the same problems.

Do you deserve better care? Yes! Can you get it? Sure, if you are
willing to work for it. But I find more and more, that if the answer
is within my grasp, I'd rather get it myself, than waste someone else's
time fumbling for and answer that will probably be wrong.

wow, all these ogres in training!

anyway, i work very hard at not 'classing' people except for these that really
deserve it (murderers, rapists, pedophiles, etc); so, when i see somebody i let
it slide UNTIL i find out what they do for work. i would say the same of a 5'2"
400 firefighter/policeman- get a different line of work.

i also don;t expect the doc et al to make me better, only i can do that; i
expect a better patient/doctor pairing when it comes to therapy and i expect to
be sent to the right therapy center; likewise, i expect to be treated by someone
in their field to really look the part. the 400 lb lab technician sampling my
blood i wouldn't expect to be slim and svelte or muscular (fine if they are),
but the PHYSICAL THERAPIST i EXPECT to be in shape.

It is hard to imagine being able to do a PE's job properly without
being reasonably in shape. At 5'7", no matter how much I may want to,
I can't play pro basketball - just won't happen. There are some jobs
that have certain requirements that just don't seem to be overcomable
    by sheer will power.

228.607Nice weekend, eh?HOTLNE::CORMIERTue Apr 22 1997 12:098
We get a BEAUTIFUL couple of days off. Nice long weekend. Perfect for
working outside - yard work, cycling, running, anything you want!
And I am SICK as a dog!!! I got some kind of virus, and was so sick
Friday - Monday. I finally am able to put some food into my stomach
today. Bleh! What a waste! Grumble, mumble about loss of progress,
loss of muscle mass, no energy, waste of perfectly good weather, etc.
    etc.
