    RE: .214

Finished the hydraulic switch replacement on my FLH rear brake. I
lost quite a bit of DOT 5 when pulling the old fitting and had to
    bleed the whole system.

I won't elaborate on my 'bleeding' partner, my 8 year old son,
suffice to say his attention span is numerically equal to his
    age (in seconds though). Jaysus!!

Gotta plug the "power bleeder" here... The one I purchased
is a MityVac brand. It was about 40 bucks and sure worth it when bleeding
the front dual calipers AND anti-dive system on the Seca!

It only takes ONE person! Said son can let his attention span go wild
while simply sitting on the bike! :-)

    Hmmm...sounds like the ticket, but I'll wager it's more like $CDN 100
    up here.

My son and I are still buddies, I can't blame him for being bored,
that FLH front brake was SLOOOOOOOW to bleed. He really only focusses
on NHL these days, there are imprints on the ceiling of the wreck room
from when his team scores. What a fan..!

For what its worth, I bought a USD $6 bleeder which allows me to bleed
my system by myself. It affixes to the bleed nipple with a flexible
clear plastic tube which goes to a uniflow check valve. So, after
loosening the nipple just a tad and pumping the brake/clutch lever the
fluid will flow out and not allow air to back into the system. Ya just
have to make sure you don't run out of fluid in the resevoir. I have
used this to change the fluid on all my bikes and on my cars. I have
had good success with this and it is cheap. :-)

I just bled my new Harrison 6 piston caliper on my FXR last weekend.
Used my vacum tester ( hand held pump type used for leak checking
vacum operated devices ) to draw fresh dot 5 thru a freshly rebiult
master cylinder, ner Russell brake line and an empty caliper. Took
about 10 miniutes. To get the fluid all the way thru...

Took me and my 11 yr old daughter another 15 min's to get the rest
of the air out. Could have been done in 5 min's if she was paying
better attention to my squeeze, hold it, ok let it out requests... :-)

If I ever get my gas tank back from the paint shop I'll post a road
test summary on the single 6-piston caliper upgrade...

Hopefully this weeked for the NIMRO meet....

73.232brake overhaul interval?CSC32::FIEVEL::FILGATEBruce Filgate SHR3-2/W4 237-6452Tue Jun 03 1997 07:108
After reading the accidents topic today, I got to thinking about
front brakes locking up. Is there a recommended interval to
rebuild slave cyclinders on m/c? I pulled mine and rebuild them
three years ago after my sons front wheel calipers seized in the
 garage.

    Bruce,

Not that I know of, the only suggested service is to change the fluid
in your brakes (and clutch) each year. I change the fluids about every
two years, or when they look dark. That can reduce the chance of them
failing to operate due to moisture, and dirt.

OF course, that does not cover all failures, my 87 Cagiva had a back
brake failure, that was caused by a bolt falling out of the footpeg
mounting plate, and I lost the travel in the brake pedal... Hey, that
is why they have front brakes.. :-)
