This comes off a sheet that Kay Fisher gave me at lunch. The contest(s)
are on a sod farm in southern Maine. There is a map on the sheet that
shows it about 6 miles from exit 4 off I95 in Maine. Kay got my wife
talked into going along and doing some shopping while I fly (I'll figure
out if I should thank you after I see the bills P^)

642.6Go early, go often.ZENDIA::REITHJim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02Fri Apr 19 1991 17:1813
Well, the Simsbury CT contest for the 5/18 weekend appears to have been
rescheduled to June (current MA schedule) so the 5/18 contest would be
the first of the season. It's always easier to embarass yourself in
front of strangers P^) than your local buddies.

I'll probably try to have something ready to go up and fly both events
on the May 18th contest. Kay sounded like he was interested. Dave
Walter sounded interested (wait a minute... all my buddies WILL be
there!) My feeling is that if the site proves to be good and the drive
isn't too bad, I'll head up for as many as I can. Maybe by the end of
the season I can actually get comfortable with them. If Simsbury was
the same weekend, I'd probably head there but I want to get some
experience built up and the earlier in the season the better.
642.7Looking forwardSNAX::SMITHI FEEL THE NEEDFri Apr 19 1991 17:204
Ok, let me know who's going where. I definately want to hit some
    glider contests this summer.

Will do. Maybe (since this is local) we should move over to the DECRCM
file. I expect a large number of the Acton crew to be heading out this
year. Along with Kay and Dave, Lamar, Dan Miner, Dan Snow, Lawton Read
are all talking about hitting the contests this season.

This weekend in Orange we are having the annual Ducted Fan Fun Fly.

Come on down and check out the jets.
Both Saturday and Sunday (figure 10-4 Saturday and 10-2 Sunday).
Maybe Anker will bring his F16?

Maybe you'll take the family out to see some real FAST airplanes.

Maybe you'll read note 774.17 for directions to Orange.

I'll be there helping - probably selling raffle tickets
and registering pilots - if you come look me up and say hello.

The National Sailplane Symposium is back.

Oct 24th and 25th

I've never been but I always wanted to then the went
and canceled the last few.

Any glider guiders out there interested in a weekend in
Wisconsin?

I don't have the contact details handy but will dig them
up from the add in Model Aviation if anybody shows interest.

Also - we gotta schedule a trip to the cape to help me purge
out my inventory of "I don't love it anymore" sailplanes.

The contest this weekend is the 8th and 9th. Don't be late, Kay 8^)

The next Ware Gremlin contest will be pushed out until October due to my
hectic schedule. Can't devote enough time to it before then.

Me? CD in Acton? Postal contest? Please enlighten those of us without RCSD
subscriptions... (9/27 is my wife's b'day so I'm an unlikely CD)

Corrected as per Jim Reith's input...

This weekend Aug 8th and 9th there will be the CRRC Sailplane contest.

If you have never attended a sailplane contest I recommend this one.
It is one of the largest in New England and usually lots of fun.
It is also more centrally located to most DEC sites.

See note 774.31 for directions to the Sudbury site.

Generally 9:00 is starting time and it usually runs till 3-4 PM the first
day and 2-3 PM the second day.

I won't say that watching sailplanes is a great spectator sport
but I think you will find that if you have never seen one it
is quite enlightening.

==================================================================================

I just called Montreal Quebec. They were listed as having a 2 day
contest the weekend of the 15th and 16th. However I was informed
that the data in RCSD was wrong and it happened last weekend.
Rats - had my wife convinced to take the trip.

Anyway - not counting that...

Things are looking a little hectic for September.

 5 Sep - Gremlin Combat - Gardner
12-Sep - rain date for above also
12-Sep - Brimfield Float fly (day 1)
13-Sep - Brimfield Float fly (day 2)
13-Sep - Scale Fly In - Ellington CT
13-Sep - Sailplane Contest - Simsbury CT

19-Sep - Scale Fly in - Hadley MA (day 1)
20-Sep - Scale Fly in - Hadley MA (day 1)
20-Sep - Sailplane Contest - Salisbury MA
20-Sep - Sailplane Contest - Syosset NY

27-Sep - Postal Sailplane Contest - Everywhere!
I assume that Jim Reith will be our CD in Acton!
	 Reference RCSD July-1992 Page 34 and 35 for rules. (2-meter, 2 channel)

October - Gremlin Combat - Ware MA.
24-Oct - National Sailplane Symposium - Madison Wisconsin (day 1)
25-Oct - National Sailplane Symposium - Madison Wisconsin (day 2)

Just got some flyers in the mail from Al - I made copies - if you want
a set just send me mail with your mail stop.

Dates are correct above.

The flyers have fancy maps to New Boston and Amherst fields.

The New Boston competition is HLG, 2-meter, open and maybe standard class.
The Amherst competition is 2-meter, Standard, Open and a brief HLG fun event.

He sent me so much info - I'd rather send copies to those interested.

Yeah, the format for the 9/5 contest was cumulative duration with 5 flights
adding up to 21(?) minutes with a 7 minute max per flight and a runway landing
where you landed on a strip and if you stopped with something over the
centerline, you got a bonus.

It wasn't clear if you could enter multiple classes from the instructions on
the back

The october contest was the usual precision duration with landing points format
but had the HLG and F3B stuff mixed into the day

This is a single design event with two classes. Stock class is .25 plain bearing
engines with a minimum wingspan of 44 inches. All other planes will be
placed in the Open class. Mufflers are required and any plane deemed too
noisy will not be allowed to compete.

Contest format will be double elimination with a consolation round for those
eliminated (all fliers will fly three rounds minimum). 5 minute rounds will be
flown with 2 points for a cut and 1 point for spot landing in rounds where no
cut is made. Awards for first through third places in each class with partici-
pation certificates for all attendees. Special awards for rookies.

Entry fee is $3 per class and a roll of crepe paper. Pre-registration is not re-
quired but we would like to know that you intend to come and what fre-

Thanks for my first contact on the Internet. I like it.

The New Boston Frigid Finger Flaming Fun-Fly will be held on Sunday,
December 5th. This is fun fly so your pivot is legal anyway. No
prizes but only $5 entry to cover coffee etc.. I don't have any more
details but I will contact Al and get back to you. I'm also going to
talk to Al about the tasks and hope to have a large verity. Probably
some combination of the 93 AMA/LSF Nat's tasks. It should be fun to
try these out. If you have any suggestions for fun tasks zap me a note.

> Can you explain your return address delphi.com - is Delphi some
> company name?

Delphi is a dial up service (sorta like a mini Compuserve) with full
access to the Internet (telnet, ftp et.al. ). Its pretty cheep and seams
to work well.

> Maine is almost here - I'm ready.

I'm Not. Maine is too soon. Time to get to work and figure out
something worthwhile to say.

Find some big guy who wants to through that pivot all day and come up
for the Fun Fly (don't look at me though, I could hardly get one 360

 I like your thermal.

Another note about the New Boston HLG contest.
I just got the flyer last night and noticed.

1. It is not at the club New Boston field.
It is in Al Ryder's hay field 3.5 miles south of the club field in Mont Vernon
It is on Lamson Rd. He says you can't miss it.

2. He mentioned in the flyer that he will furnish up-starts.
Sounds interesting to me because I really don't consider the Pivot-Plus an HLG.

642.45More on contestsQUIVER::WALTERThu Nov 11 1993 16:1822
Speaking of Al Ryder's contests, he just sent out the results of the
recent New Boston contest and mentioned at the end of it that there was
a scoring error in Open class, and that I actually won it! My immediate
reaction was "Al's been smoking his hay crop again". My first two flights
were lousy, with no landing points, and only my third flight was even
close to a max. So, I called him up and verified my scores. Sure
enough, even though my first two flights were pretty bad, everyone else
had problems too, and my third flight made a big difference. But I'm
still a little suspicious of the outcome.

Al also wanted to spread the word about the upcoming handlaunch event.
He says he has prizes left over from the open contest. He proposes that
each contestant who shows up invent a few handlaunch events and run a
"mini-contest", handing out prizes afterward. So, make up your own
bizarre rules and come on up. If it's cold, you can warm up in Al's
    house.

    Dave

Personally, I'd like to try Handlaunch Golf, but we need to find a
    friendly golf course first.

642.48Won't be able to attendSNAX::SMITHI FEEL THE NEEDSat Nov 13 1993 08:2342
Mainly due to the fact that I don't have a hand launch glider. I'll
have to build one of those some day.

If anyone's interested though, I have an idea for a contest your
welcome to use and try out.

It's called the GAMBLER and the name is based on poker and the Kenny
Rogers song THE GAMBLER where you have to decide wether to HOLD EM or
    FOLD EM.

It would go something like this. You have 10 minutes for 5 throws. The
idea is to get the longest flight for any one throw. Doesn't sound to
complicated EXCEPT for the following rules.

After your time is recorded for each throw, you have to decide wether
you want to keep that time (HOLD EM) or try again (FOLD EM). If you try
again, your previous time is gone. You can't go back to it. Once you
declare that you are keeping a particular flight, your done because
you've decided to play the hand you have (hold em).

So, a make believe round might go something like this. On your first
throw, you get a 1 minute flight. You decide you can do better so you
go on to your 2nd throw. On your 2nd throw, you only get a 45 second
flight. That 45 second flight is what your now stuck with because you
gave up (or folded) your first flight.

You certainly know you can do better than 45 seconds so you "fold" your
2nd throw and go on to the third. On your third throw, you get a 2
minute flight. Based on the conditions, etc. you feel that 2 minutes
is pretty darn good and you decide to keep it. At that point, your
done. You don't get your 4th and 5th throws as you've decided to
"play" your current hand of 2 minutes.

So, all through the contest, people are deciding wether to "gamble"
or not. If you take another throw, will you do better or worse. If you
give up a 1:30 flight, might you only get a 1:00 flight the next time.
YOU might stop with a 2 minute flight. Someone else might feel their
best flight is 1:50 and stop. Someone else might "gamble" and get
    a 2:01.

I don't know. Sounds like it might be fun to me.

642.50 Games from Cards and DiceSHIPS::HORNBY_TSoarers are rarely SilentWed Nov 17 1993 08:4619
Seem a reasonable idea but will they know what the opposition have
scored. If so this will definately influence "HOLD or FOLD".

I have used a format which could be of interest based on a card/dice
game. This is meant for bungee thermal fun contest in teams but could be
    reduced to match.

Each flight has to be scored, none can be thrown away. One round
consists of a group of flights which are targetted at 3,4,5,6,7,8 minute
flights without going over, points for landing and seconds on the clock.
(the emphasis is on gently introducing juniors to the F3J rules and
    team work)
A time limit is set for the whole task (just enough to max plus a small
    amount for prep between).

PS. The organisers must insure no clashes of frequencies across the
    teams.

642.53New Boston Contest DoubtfulMKOTS3::MARRONEThu Apr 07 1994 13:2213
I spoke to Alton last night at our club meeting, and the way it looks
right now, New Boston will not be flyable by the weekend. Still too
much under water, and with today's rain, there's little chance
everything will dry out in time.

Alton said he will be there Sunday morning regardless, but holding the
    contest.... doubtful.

If there's an alternate plan, I'll try to post it in here by Friday PM.

    Sorry folks,

642.54Glider contest - Sidney, MaineKAY::FISHERBXB2-2/G08 DTN 293-5695Thu May 05 1994 10:0532
This Saturday (7-May-94) there is a sailplane competition in Sidney, Maine
at the KVMA field (same place that the Gremlin contest will be
on 24-Jul-94).

CD is Rick Hallet (207)487-3058

2-Meter and Unlimited.

Sidney is way up and usually not many attend. This makes
for many rounds and the place is wide open. I've went to several
Sidney sailplane competitions in the past and had a lot of fun.

Since this is mother's day weekend coming up I booked a room
at the Portland Sheraton which is across the street from the Maine Mall.

This way my wife is looking forward to the trip so I win on both ends.

Looks like good weather and I've got 5 planes on charge at this very
minute.

P.S. Al Ryder's contest in April actually ran even tho he called us
and canceled. He said according to AMA rules sanctioned events
are not canceled so he went to the field in case some one arrived.
Les Gerhardt, Steve Schommer(sp), Jim Tyre, Rick Rolke(sp), and
a few others showed up and they got in 7 rounds of winch launches
and 35 rounds of HLG. The rain only drizzled on them a bit!

Sorry for the short notice - but tomorrow evening Thursday 4-Apr-1996 is
the first meeting of a group of "Model Engineers" (read that as home
shop machinists) - the guys that can make engines and retracts etc...

If you have never seen Roland's rotary engine run it is worth it just for
that. Quite inspirational - he has been bringing it to the Orange Engine
Show in past years and all I can say is WOW.

Below is a repost of Ron Gingers entry into rec.crafts.metal.
It is my understanding this place is about 15 minutes from Maynard.

sorry to post this so widely, but I do want to make sure everyone in this area
knows about this.

We will have the first meeting of the New England model engineers society at
the Charles Rive Museum of Industry, Waltham MA. on Thursday, April4, at 7;00PM

the speaker for the meeting will be Roland Gaucher with his Bentley BR2
rotary. He will show the engine, some of the tooling to make it, and will run
it.

We also hope to have a Show and Tell program, everyone is invited to bring
along a model, or a work in progress to show the group.

...
Yeah, the contest is on. I had to wait until I heard from the guy that we
get permission to use the site from about conditions. It's going to be
muddy/wet so bring boots.

From Massachusetts, take your favorite road to Rt84 south and get off at
exit 1. Go under the highway towards the Roy Rogers and Mashpaug Rd will be
just before the gas station on the right (after passing under the highway,
NOT Sturbridge Isle)
                or

Coming from Connecticut, come north on Rt84 and get off at Mass exit 1.
You'll get off facing a Roy Rogers and a gas station. On the south side of
the gas station is a road (Mashpaug Rd if the sign survived the winter)

You go in Mashpaug Rd. about 3-500'. That road will make a sharp turn to
the left but there's another road off the right. As you turn in to the
right you'll see signs on the right for the Sturbridge dump. head in this
road and it will turn left (about 500' further in) and keep going (take it
easy since it's residential). It's better than a mile down this road it
will finally turn right and you'll go through a gate. The field is on the
right on the other side of the dip in the road. I should be out there at
8:30am and we'll start about 10am. If it's as wet as we expect, I'd prefer
people to park along one side of the road and carry stuff up to the field.

$5 per class with the money split among the winners (top three places).

It's more than just peanut scale - so the range of flight times
should vary from 5 seconds to 5 minutes. I think world class indoor
stuff gets up to 15 minutes and there may be some of those types there
but I don't think anyone will be close to record times in the Shriner's
Auditorium. But - this is where you can see the REAL model builders.

Talk about keeping it light.
P.S. Note the date change to this Sunday 16-Mar-97

We have a fairly good indoor club that is part of the ORCC (Ottawa
    Remote Control Club).

They fly every Monday at a local High school gym, Woodroffe High school,
    7pm to 10 pm.

The flight times range in the gym to over 20 minutes. World class record
is over 60 minutes in a covered foot ball field.

I don't know how big the hall is for the shriners but I would bet
    you'll see flights over a 1/2 hour.

I think we have the only electric R/C indoor flyer in North America.
Quite something to see, made of the clear covering and about 36" span.
There's a motor about the size of my little finger that turns over
20k rpm. He brought the plans and motor from Germany. 3 - 5 minute
flights are the norm. Uses the Cannon radio system 3 chan.

If you've never seen indoor flying, I would have a look. Just remember
not to move while they are flying. the heat from your hand will make
these things rise. Major tornados caused by walking fast.

I went.
It was cold. I took my grandson. He had a ball.
I had an old flippy flyer that I let him throw till
he broke it beyond repair.

I entered an Andreson Bipe in peanut scale. My longest
official flight was 10 seconds. I had replace the
rubber the day before and was expecting better. A couple
of years ago I managed a 22 second flight with this same
plane and the original rubber. Can you tell I'm not
an expert!

Anyway after the timed flights I had a fellow with lots
of resources try two different rubber diameters on it
and we managed to get it up to 27 seconds.

Even though the flights were short it was well trimmed and
flew smoothly.

There weren't many folks there - maybe 30 contestants.
