    This morning I saw A 7 VNE, with the 7 doctored so that half the top
    horizontal was missing and the vertical stroke intersected with the top
    of the V to read ANNE.
    
    Ought to be banned for life.

    Driving in this morning I was about 10th in the queue behind a slow
    moving lorry on a road which it is notoriously difficult to overtake.
    
    Most drivers were waiting patiently, until behind me arrive a bright
    red Fiesta XR2, whose drive proceded to gamble in the gaps between
    oncoming traffic and the couple of car lengths between the queueing
    vehicles. After a couple of near misses (even by my standards (-:) he
    succeeded in passing the truck and zoomed off.
    
    Nothing unusual so far.
    
    
    Few minutes later, on the Woodcote road in Caversham Heights, saw same
    Red fiesta parked outside of a house, with the driver taking from the
    boot and fixing on the roof a magnetic driving school sign. Presumably
    he was about to pick up his first customer of the day!

    just shake their head in disbelief, and thankGod that they survived
    another person's stupidity. in this case, I would report him. No

    Thats nothing. Over here in Switzeerland they are learning in 
    Golf G60s and BMW M3s, probably in case they need some acceleration
    to overtake a slow lorry with blinds on the window.

Yes in Neuch�tel I've seen the following driving school cars:

 - M3s
 - G60s
 - there are now a couple of VR6's,
 - a Celica
 - a couple of MX-5
 - a 205 CLi soft top
 - to keep things in perspective the biggest school has a fleet of Nissans 
   (Micras?)

I don't think I could have got behind the wheel of such beasts when 
on my driving lessons.  The Nissan Micra was enough of an animal at 
the time!

Why do they do it???  Prestige symbols for the Instructors?

They're all private driving schools (apart from the Micra fleet) - so the cars
double up as personal cars. I guess that being an instructor requires a 'macho'
car round this neck of the woods!

    As of 1-July-1992 VAT registered driving schools can claim the VAT back
    on the purchace price of any school cars. So you can expect to see a
    lot flash cars around ...

    When I was living there I talked to the driving schools and to the
    marque dealers about this. They have an agreement. This is GOOD
    business practice. Guess what the new graduate will want to drive ?
    

    
    
    	A local driving instructor who used XR2s claimed it was because
    they had such torquey engines. If the learner made a muck up of the
    gears, it didn't matter so much. I leave it to you're own discretion
    whether you believe him or not...

	I hate to raise this subject again but, a couple of days
ago I was driving my Citroen BX (with rear blinds suitably lowered)
around a roundabout in Bracknell when I came up behind another BX.
On the rear window he had seven (yes, seven) small aerials of
slightly different lengths, but about two or three inches long and
one about two foot long on the roof near the usual radio aerial.
His blinds were drawn (but the car was real - thank you Spike
Milligan)... Now, I wonder what he was hiding?

A lot of the people with number plates where the spacing is non-standard or 
who have other incorrect features will feel even funnier after the new MOT
changes become effective in January.  They will fail!!

    I think -2 ish was refering to the fact that lights on the bumpers are
    very vulnerable to damage when the vehicle is off-road. But then most
    off-road vehicles are only bought for pose value - and are most
    unlikely to see anything other than the odd blade of grass on someones 
    drive!

    What an eventfull night. In brief .....
    
    Heard heavy skids plus bump (11 p.m). Looked at of window to see a 
    Cortina Mk4 having overshot the T-junction and hemmed in from behind
    by police car, rapidly reverse into front of police car. Cortina swings 
    through an arc to proceed on his way, narrowly missing a parked car. 
    The arc was too tight for his speed to continue at 90' to his approach. 
    Having swung around parked car, mounts opposite curb, ploughs straight 
    into lamp post which brings down half the wall behind. Police car moves 
    up behind again and Cortina proceeds to reverse and ram the front of the 
    police Volvo again. By now the police have removed drive from drivers door 
    and cuffed him. 
    This all happened within ... 30 secs and by then there were 3 other
    police cars present.

    There was a somewhat battered Rover SD1 on the M3 this morning.
    Everyone in (or around it) looked a bit shaken up, but unhurt, and most 
    of the panels on it were showing signs of some impact.
    
    The point of interest is that the car was still attached to the caravan
    it was towing!
    
    Definitely a case of the tail wagging the dog!

    yesterday. Looks totally over the top, but it certainly seems to

	Have you seen the new Esso advert where a couple of guys
drive into an Esso station in a bright yellow Allegro and one goes
into the shop to get the latest offer of drink flasks, etc.? When
he comes out the other guy is busy cutting the roof off the Allegro
to make it into a convertible and off they drive... Well, I saw that
commercial being filmed a few weeks ago when I was on my way home.
It was done at the new Esso station on the site of the old Mike
Spence Lancia Dealer (remember the late Mike Spence, the ex Lotus driver
around the Jim Clark era?)... Its on the Reading to Arborfield road
after the "Black Boy" pub, on the bend by the new roundabout... Well,
it made my day...

Yeah, I've seen it. There was also a picture in yesterday's Today newspaper
of a woman by her car. It was a Nova and vandals had cut the roof off!!!

    Yup, saw that myself. The woman lives in the same village as me
    (Mapplewell, S Yorks). She is disabled (orange sticker in the
    windscreen) and moved to Mapplewell after having her previous car
    vandalised a dozen times where she used to live. Personally, I suggest
    slow immersion in battery acid for b@$t@rd$ like this. 
    
    Uncharacteristic of Mapplewell, which has a lot in common with Sleepy
    Hollow. If they touch my Calibra, there will be serious bloodshed....

    Seen this morning whilst driving into Belfast: 2 rally cars.  The first
    I saw whipped out ahead of me with a decent gap in the traffic (this
    being a Subaru with no. 1 and J plate), the second pulled out just as I
    was passing the entrance and put the boot down so that he was driving
    against the flow of traffic to my right and then cut in in front of me.
    This car was a white Sapphire Cossie with green bumpers - no. 4 I
    think. It too had a J plate.
    
    Could the first one have been Colin Mcrae? I'm not sure of the second
    one, but if I hadn't got a suspected cracked cylinder head, I'd have
    zipped past :-)  My only cause for joy is that a maroon Sierra estate
    then proceded to pass cars on the inside behind me before cutting right
    in on my rear bumper.  This was accomanied by horns being sounded by
    other irrate drivers.  Then the Sierra estate behind me (again a J plate)
    pulled into the inside and signalled to the Cossie to turn off left.
    Well they did and blasted on up that road.  This road does take you to
    Belfast, but it is longer and there is a chance of getting stoned by 10
    year olds as happened to me last week.  But maybe THEY deserve it :-)
    
    I take it that they were heading to the start of the Ulster rally in
    the centre of Belfast.  Anyway there is a special stage tonight which I
    shall be attending and I won't forget to bring my stones along ;-)

    Last Friday, a *very large* number of motorbikes, on some sort of
    run ride through Princes Street, Edinburgh.  The whole cavalcade
    took some 25 minutes to go past, with lots of horn-blowing and flag-
    waving (Italians and Germans seemed most prolific).  A neat sight.
    
    One group of Italian riders decided to take off their crash helmets,
    just to wind up the Police officers lining the route.
    
    One poseur with a sidecar was riding his bike on two wheels, with
    the 'car waving in the air - I've not seen this stunt before !

    Well I found out the identity of the driver of the Sierra Cossie rally
    car which pulled out beside, and then in front of me.... It was Louise
    Aitkin Walker. Bloody women rally drivers think they own the road :-)
    I saw her in action on Friday night - this time on a closed stage.
    Though it was quite obvious that 99% of the rally cars were breaking
    the speed limit on the road sections in between stages.  I expect the
    Police will be pleased with their "in action" shots from their speed
    cameras :-)

Funnily enough, the one that my wife went to church in.

    ...a few months ago, but it sticks in my memory....
    
    A fairly up-market BMW, with what looked like a flat-packed wardrobe on
    the roof (carboard box, 8x2ft and 3ins. thick). No roof-rack, so the
    guy was holding it with his left hand through the sun-roof. This was in
    London, just beyond the Hammersmith fly-over. The last I saw of him, he
    turned through 90 degrees, but the package only turned through 45
    degrees. So he disappeared out of sight desperately trying to rescue
    the load with one hand while trying to steer with the other - I nearly
    followed just to see what happened!

    Seen for the last few weeks in Newmarket.. A J-reg Sapphire Cosworth
    in black with black windows, AND black and silver number plate (old
    style).  Last weekend, same car seen in Newmarket High St with a police
    car parked behind it.  Driver being given an on-the-spot fine for
    illegal number plate!  Monday morning same Sapphire with correct
    yellow/black number plates.
    Oh dear!  The yellow just spoils the whole car! ;-)
    

Last night on M4 East Bound between J12 and J11 there was the results of
a towing accident. A car (Panda?) was pulling a trailer with a black
911 on board. When I saw it, the trailer was on the hard shoulder at 90
degrees to the road and the right way up. The Porsche was also still on
the correct place. Unfortunately, the towing car was up side down with the
roof crushed almost to door top level. Does anybody know what happened - i.e.
did the trailer start snaking or was the towing car forced to brake to
avoid hitting someone else? There are several (10 or so) over cars parked on the
hard shoulder. These all looked to be undamaged.

    Seen by the side of Hillsborough duel carriageway (NI), a Porsche 944
    with the front half in a rather crispy burnt state.  Looked like an
    engine bay fire, as the paint on the bonnet had been completely burnt
    off along with a lot of that on the front wings.
    
    It did make me think though.  I'm going to buy a fire extinguisher (or
    something spelt remotely like that :-) for my car.

    Stop this horseing around you boys :-)  Here's a proper seen in passing

    Yesterday on the M1 (NI) a splatted (and I mean completely splatted)
    caravan on the hard shoulder/inside lane.  The area was cordoned off by
    Police and all that remained of said caravan was a pancake like
    projection such that if it were folded up again along the seems it
    would make a complete 3D caravan again;' apart form all the other
    broken bits.  I swear to you that the wreckage was COMPLETELY flat!
    
    There were 3 Police cars at the scene, but no ambulance.  Whats more,
    as I was passing and gawking out the passenger window (as one does at
    such strange apparitions) a member of the constabulary pointed a
    hairdryer at me!  My radar detector started bleeping immediately, but
    sine I was obeying the speed limit I had nothin to worry about.  I'm
    just wondering if the detector was switched on in advance of my passing
    and I couldn't detect it; or if it was turned on just as I was passing? 
    I still don't know what range the darn thing is capable of.  Then again
    it just may be a flat caravan detector cunningly disguised as a radar
    detector.  That's what I'll tell the judge anyway ;-)

Sounds possible,  the block will bore out quite considerably,  and if you fit 
a stroker crank it is possible to get to 4000cc.

However the 3.6l conversion costs approx 3500 quid,  the crank alone is 1016,  I
would expect the chap has a LOT of money,  or is a fraudster!

	This morning its a somewhat damp and I'm cruising south down
	the A33 swallowfield bypass following another car in the 
	nearside lane. The road is nearly empty and suddenly this guy
	stands on his brakes and I follow suit thinking he must have
	forgotten his portable phone or something and also pull out
	to the outside lane to go past. It was at this point that I 
	saw the herd of cows charging down the bank and onto the
	carriageway. Now heavily into emergency stop mode but it
	doesn't look as if I'll make it. Leading cow sees me and decides
	on discretionary route along the carriageway allowing me to 
	slip by. I carry on but the southbound is now blocked completely
	and the herd is now galavanting onto the northbound where
	much braking is taking place.

	I can describe the intruders as brown, well fed and groomed with
	big eyes and confused looks on their faces. Unfortunately I didn't
	get their registration numbers.

	.-1 reminds me of an occasion about 15 years ago, when I was on
a bus going through the middle of Geneva on my way to work one morning.
A cow suddenly appeared from within a crowd of pedestrians, also on their
way to work, and ran into the front of my bus (ok, the pedestrians were on
their way to work, not the cow and, no, I didn't actually own the bus)... 

	It then ran up the road through the rush hour traffic and
disappeared as quickly as it had arrived. In my early-morning bleary-
eyed state I thought that I had dreamed the whole episode until I
read about it in the papers later. Apparently, the cow did not like the
accomodation at the local abatoir and decided to go walkabout...

    There's a roundabout on the North Circular, near Whipps Cross hospital,
    just before the bit where the NC turns into a 12 lane highway for about
    half a mile. It's very large, and grassed in the middle. I can remember
    the time, maybe 25 years ago, when cows were grazed on there, and
    traffic flow was interrupted to move them on and off.
    
    This explains the cattle grids there that some people may have wondered
    about.

    Whipps cross road still sees animals padding about.  But I remember
    many years ago seeing  a herd of cows wandering up Chingford mount road
    apparently looking in shop windows with Rowdy Yates ( local bobby on
    his Grey Velocette noddy bike ) herding them along. Not the sort of
    place you'd find cows wandering about and just for good measure there
    is a steep hill at one end.

In Otford, Kent, there's a roundabout with a duck pond in the middle. 
All traffic stops when they decide to cross the road (there's even a
special warning sign!)

    The Sapphire looks quite reasonable for someone who wants a 'family car'
    but with tremendous performance (as well as practicality).

    Saw something I'd not seen before at Thruxton yesterday.
    
    A Metro 6R4, RACING!
    
    It performed pretty well, coming second in the race which included
    Ferraris, Porsches, Astons, a TVR Griffith (the original one) and some
    Caterhams.
    
    The race was won by one of the Caterhams, but the huge looking Metro
    gave him a very hard time all race long.

    Williams took a contract from Rover to design and build a car. All
    design was done by Patrick Head and his team. It was intended to be a 
    front engined V8 , but Patrick heads team came up with a rearend V6
    which Rover like so williams built 3 prototypes. The rest is history.
    Rover with help from Williams developed the car from its original form
    to  the group b rally car.

	Not so much "seen in passing" as "heard in passing", but here
	goes.

	Yesterday, whilst driving, I pointed out a Lotus (Esprit Turbo) to
	my 4 year old daughter.  Today, we ended up following the same
	car, and my daughter said "look, theres that lettuce again".
	That still makes her better at spotting cars than my mother
	in law.

"So what?", I hear you ask. Well it was situated at the front of this

jettisoned via the window into the skip. 

Anyhow, not four feet away from said skip, sat a brand spankers Ferrari 
348tb !!!!. I would have stopped longer for a gawk, but I was afraid of old
AX being clobbered by the rubble !. Madness!

    Well, I popped into our local Jaguar dealer on Friday to take a look at
    the XJ220.
    
    It's a BIG car! Quite easily as big, if not bigger, than an XJ6 saloon
    (in all, but height!) and noticeably bigger than the svelte looking
    XJS. Finish inside is not really 400K+, but I guess what's there is
    pretty good quality, just very bland (The main dash could be from an
    Escort 1.6S! All the oil pressure and other 'sportscar' dials are on
    the door!
    
    Getting in and out is very difficult. It's a low car, but the really
    difficult thing is the width of the sills. Paintwork on the example was 
    blue and looked excellent. The engine bay is a little bland too, the V6
    engine looking quite unimportant in the back of this huge car.
    
    Underneath looks pure Group C (ah, those were the days), with huge
    tunnels at the back and a flat bottom under the front and passenger
    compartment.
    
    Having had a good look, I decided, and picked my (silver) version up
    this morning.

    one that relies on a 4 looking like a `e'.   Has anyone seen a (legal)
    number plate where this substitution has worked?

	A long time ago when I had my MGB I was pulled up for having an
illegally spaced number plate. I was told then that the spacing should be 
0.5 inch between each letter/number with 1.5 inches between the group of four 
and the group of three.

	In your example it should be:

	K <0.5"> 1 <0.5"> 1 <0.5"> 1 <1.5"> A <0.5"> B <0.5"> C

    Easily, because it doesn't. It's *almost* identical, and therein lies
    its secret. Very dark metallic green, tasty wide alloys, twin wide-bore
    exhaust, and a subtle "Lotus" badge.

    could be.... but sadly, I think it's shape is a little to generic now.
    It's not distinctive enough. Mind you cars in the metal look a hell of
    lot better than pictures. I overtook a Testarossa once on the M6
    (traffic jam!) and it look incredible.
    
    What plates was the Supra wearing ?

    On the A329 a very old van, covered in rust, and uncared for (the phone
    number on the back was 01- rather than 071 or 081). It belong
    to a company called Burlington Air Executive (or some such).
    
    However the number plate was A1 BAE.... I wonder how much British
    Aerospace would pay for that !? (or Richard Branson to use as a
    bargaining point?!).

    Saw a hefty looking BMW 5 series yesterday on the M3 with a 540i badge
    on it and big wheels.  Is this a production model or an Alpina/Hertge
    thing?  If it's standard I wonder how long it'll be before the

I saw the same grey Rover near Swindon last week. You can spot it easily without
seeng the number plate as there is a conspicuous piece of equipment hanging down
inside the middle of the car.

    Where I come from (ie the north of Ireland), having lists of reggies of
    unmarked police cars can land you in jail.  Obviously it isn't as
    serious over here, but I suspect it would be dealt with by the police
    in the same way as, say, flashing your lights to warn other drivers of
    a speed trap.  And if we all do it, they can add "conspiring to" to the
    charge sheet...
    
    I'm not certain, but I believe this to be the case.

(well actually I have been done for speeding too...)

    If a driver is sufficiently aware of his or her surroundings that they
    can recognise an unmarked police car by any of the well known techniques
    (No dealer sticker, odd mirrors, extra aerial etc) then they they are
    probably a safe driver because they will be aware of all the other cars
    as well. If, on the other hand the driver is not up to the task of
    spotting the police car then they should get done for undue care and
    attn. Any driver caught by a marked police car should have their licence
    remove for gross inabiliy.

Up here in Scotland, I have now noticed that the police are using an increasing
number of different coloured unmarked cars.  
ie: instead of the trad. white, they now also use blue, red and green buggies.

Another point to note, is that they are also using unmarked hatchbacks as well
as the saloon counterpart - Rover 827 and Granada.

Makes them all the harder to see now !

    spacing in wrong and the letters are missleading. Never mind , the

    Don't be fooled, the Police Driver Training School (Thames Valley)
    use a multitude of different cars and often test potential new cars.
    
    They also have the ability to stop anybody committing a motoring
    offence.

850i is distinctly BMWish due to the kidney grille.

As for unmarked cars. I guess I'll have to pay more attention
to other cars on the road and look out for uprated alternator
and brake discs as well as the welds and strengthening in
hidden places and the interior while I'm driving down the 
motorway. How could I ever have missed them?

Dont forget to check for the two reverse gears !!  :-)

	What I look for is a large orange line down the sides and
	a blue light on top or....

	(1) more ariels than usual (3+)
	(2) two people in front seats (usually with short hair cuts)
	(3) white shirts with epulets 

	Of course now  you've mastered the sort of observation 
	neccessary for spotting the police in any direction at any
	speed, then you've reached advanced driver status.  An 
	alternative is to stay completely blameless (within the law).

    I must agree with Dave here,I always look for the number of
    occupance,dress code.I also look for a small box like item either
    mounted next to the rear view mirror,or on the dash,small box being
    video camera.I've sat at the roundabout near Shire hall and seen a blue
    24valve 827i Rover pull up along side with a small JVC video cam on
    board.There were to smartly dressed gents on board. (The driver did
    have both hands on the steering wheel and his partner was holding his
    can of drink).

The passenger will now sometimes slink in his seat so that if you are behind the 
car (ie overtaking) you may not see 2 occupants until you are passed them.
In other words, the front headrest hides the shape of his head.

Hang on. I saw a black 911 with the plate S5 on it the
other day on the A339 heading towards Basingstoke. The guy
driving weas a complete idiot, overtaking everything in 
sight and cutting in front of people to avoid head on
collisions. Apparantly the car is notorious for pissing
people off on that stretch of road.

And I'm positive the number was S5

Now you come to mention it...
I remember being overtaken on solid line edged chevrons by
a black porsche reg S5 with all fog lights blazing (on the A339).
I kindly flashed my headlights to indicate my presence and in 
the vain hope he might understand that he'd left his dazzling 
rear fog lights on aswell, only to be rewarded with a slamming
on of the brakes, I did likewise and heard the sounds of skidding
from the car behind and waited for the thud...

          it's funny but I see tend to see may cars (some interesting) on
    the M3. Yesterday I saw a police patrol car (nice Surrey livery) this
    was a lowered cavalier GSI (by design) but when it passed the rear
    badges were still evident*. These badges were GSI, 16v, 4X4 and Turbo.
    So be careful out there 'cause the police are using rather fast
    vehicles these days.

        the look of the "turbo" was just that, an added extra. Had the car
    not had "ECILOP" on the front and "POLICE" on the sides and back I
    would have put it down as a "MDC" addon extra, but as the car looked
    lower than a standard GSI and the roof mounted light bar was covered in
    black plastic (ala binliners) I assumed that Surrey Constabulary has
    just taken delivery of a new "WPC" (Whicked Police Car).

It appears that most of us nowadays know only too well, the feeling of returning
to the car to find either a broken windows(s), scratched paint, burst lock(s) or 
even worse , a big space where the car once was.

I *only* had the a 1/4 window smashed and both door locks burst, but it still 
cost $120 to fix, the car now needs two keys, and you end up feeling sick.

Bring back hanging.
Might be a bit extreme some would say, but what the hell, these gits may stop
if they really knew the penalties they faced.

It would also cut the insurance premiums   ;-)

    Reading the replies in #1538 about locking wheel nuts etc. reminded me of
    something I saw the other day.
    
    I saw a rusty mark III escort sporting a brand new set of RS 2000
    alloys which were obviously worth more than the whole car. I couldn't
    help thinking of an RS sitting on bricks somewhere as I can't believe
    the owner would have bought them from a dealer. Maybe he got them from 
    a scrappy or off the 'back of lorry' or maybe I'm just being cynical.

    At the Mercedes France dealership in Villeneuve Loubet, a transporter
    full of the new C-class 190 replacements. There was also one at the
    adjacent petrol station. As this garage is often used as the base for
    press to road-tests new Mercs I expect they'll be a common sight for a
    few days.

Yesterday Sunday,I was travelling to Leatherhead (Surrey),a red Porche open top 
sportster pulled out in front of me,this car was identical to the type James
Dean met his maker in.

Does anyone know the exact model of this car.

Anyway I was tucked up behind him one second the next there was a blast of flame
from the howitzer type exhaust and this thing was gone with an almighty roar 
into the distance.
I did'nt even try to catch him in my poor little R5GTT,so I'm still wondering 
what this beast was,as I said before I briefly noticed Porche written on the
back and this huge exhaust system.

Someone put me out of my misery and confirm what it was,I would hate to think

    At Lightwater Country Park last Saturday, we saw "One of the last
    remaining AMPHICARS in Britain".
    
    It was designed by Hans Trippel. 2,800 of them were built in Berlin in
    1962 and they were based on a Triumph Herald ( 1200 cc engine ). They
    were capable of 70mph on land and 8mph ( 6.5 knots ) in water.
    
    It is driven on land by its rear wheeels. At the back of the car, on
    either side of the engine, are two propellors, which power the car in a
    similar style to a boat. The car is steered in water by its front
    wheels. It has a welded steel hull to allow it to float. In 1962, one
    was successfully sailed across the English Channel.

    I expect, due to my advanced level of seniority in the position, that
    I'll be shouting at obnoxious jerks in Porsches who insist on clogging
    up the paddock instead of parking and using their legs. That appears 
    to be the usual extent of the duties (I can't remember the last time
    we had a fire in the paddock...).

    hour.I say this because I came into work a little later this morning
    and as soon I got on the M4 at J12 I cut up,squashed up and flashed up.
    With respect to those present I would guess that 75% of the people on
    the road at that time of day are those that are forced to drive for
    a living and so get complacent when they drive.In short,I haven't seen
    such a bad display of driving by so many people since I was last at Dec

Fans of sportscars would've done well to have been at Thruxton on Sunday for
the circuit's 25th Anniversary meeting.

In the paddock (for the classic car cavalcades) were cars of value and rarity 
too great to mention, but a few highlights (for me) were :-

Jaguar XJ220, Ferrari F40, McLaren F1, 2 Aston Martin Virage Vantages, Ferrari 
GTO (the old front engined one), Ferrari Testarossa, Bugatti Type 35, 6 (count
'em!) Marcii (including 1 Mini Marcos and Jem Marsh's new Mantara Spyder), a
handfull of GT40 replicas, a Lola T70 replica and so on and so on. This is 
just a few of the cars that were there and, no doubt, others could produce a 
favourites list as long, but totally different.

In the pits were the Le Mans Prototypes, including a pair of Porsche 917s, a
gaggle of Lola T70s, a Matra Simca, a Ford F3L, a pair of Cobras (real ones,
of course) and a Lotus 40, amongst others.

I guess we'll have to wait until the 50th anniversary to see a collection of 
cars like that again, but it'll be worth the wait!

    You beat me to it! Did you mention the MGB V8 (New)? The Alfa SZ? The
    Lancia Zagato, the Allard, the Ford RS200.......
    
    We were timing the McLaren while Dr Jonathon P was giving circuit
    rides, and from a standing start at the pit exit to a slow entry to the
    pits he was doing around 1:35's. I would reckon that equates to a 1:20
    flyer or about the same as the Le Mans prototypes.
    
    A great day was had by all - apart from Damon Hill and his knackered
    Williams-renault, and the commemorative medallions were a nice touch.

	Well you might not have to wait till the 50th - cos I heard from a little 
bird that some thought is being put into the 30th aniversary already - so you'll 
be young enough to enjoy that one Mark !

    Last night on the way to see Mr snap-on, saw punishment which was fit for 
    the crime. A lump of junk passed me, loosley disguised as a ford
    grenada, Overtook almost at a junction but failed to slow turning out onto 
    the A11, swang wide onto the other side of the road and hit a wrecker 
    coming the other way. At that point the road is quite wide, but the
    grenada managed to hit the wrecker close to the kerb on the other site
    of the road. Stupid boy!!!  Needless to say the Grenada will be a write
    off, and the wrecker was damaged but not significatly.
    
    Another statistic that puts yours and my insurance up!!!!!

    whatever over the road. The engine obviously let go big time. The

	Tow-bar bent at 90 degrees to the side.

Seen on the A12 on Saturday, *just in front of me*

	caravan pulled the towing Volvo Estate through 180 degrees when it went
	out of control, to face the oncoming traffic on a dual-carriageway.
	(Very sensible towing combination, but just goes to show that nothing is
	infallible).

Seen all over the weekend,

	caravans being towed in excess of 60 mph. (I thought this was illegal ?)

Behind a Testarossa at lunchtime here in Ferney.  Then it decided to overtake 
the car in front.  Incredible sound as it accelerated away, just like a jet 
plane.  Amazingly wide car as well!  Seen them at motor shows etc before, but 
when you see it up behind another car, you realise just how huge they are.


Oh yeah, also saw K1NGY a couple of weeks back near Heathrow on a silver Merc
(500 I think).

    two weeks ago, heading North on the A3 near Wurzburg, I saw an artic
    which had also been heading North, but was now pointing West on the
    Southbound carriageway.  About 30 kilometres further North, I saw an
    another artic heading North but he was about 30 m to the right of the
    inside lane, with mud up to the axles.
    
    In both cases rubberneckers were slowing the traffic down to a crawl.

time it could only be a 'Ferrari' if it had a V12 (or flat 12).  The 308 was
orginally tagged as a Dino, after Enzo's some, of course, and then later they
simply called it the Ferrari 308.

    The aforementioned GT4 was a 4 seat, mid-engined thingy, which I quite

The series 1 308 gt4 was a Dino not a ferrari - by that I mean that there was

    Interesting note in the Mail at the weekend.
    
    The DVLC are cracking down on non-standard spacing on number plates.
    Police and inspectors are reporting people to the DLC. The driver then
    receives a letter saying change it to standad spacing or lose the right
    to use the number plate! Apparently the DVLC sell the right to use a
    number but retain ownership of the number and can withdraw the right
    to use it at any time!! They are curerently sending our letters at
    about 6 as week at the moment and are increasing their vigilance.
    
    Also the bcar can fail its MOT if incorrectvspacing is used.

    Seen yesterday in a car park in Poole, white Beemer 735i with reg. 
    2 BAD.
    
    Also yesterday on the M6, a complete dickhead driving a white Jag with
    the word POLICE on the outside. I had overtaken him 200 yards back. I
    was following a Cavalier and we were overtaking a string of lorries.
    The Jag suddenly shot out from the inside lane into the outside lane. 
    Overtook me (I was doing 80). Then he decided he wanted to leave the 
    motorway. Pulled in front of me, braked hard, squeezed in between 2 
    lorries and shot off up the slip road.

    The Hampshire traffic police seem to have acquired another BMW 5 series
    (yes, it *was* a 530, not a 535 badge, just like the dark green one they 
    were using before) unmarked car to patrol the M27 and surrounding areas. 
    Dark blue with no visible markings apart from the usual comms aerials.

Saw Reading police using their portable GATSO gizzmo last
night, no doubt to raise yet more dosh to justify their existance.

They'd got it set up on Wokingham Road by Palmer Park. I watched 
it in operation for a few minutes and it was taking snaps at quite 
regular intervals. Should make a few people really happy when the 
brown envelope arrives in the post. I still can't work out
why it required 2 cop cars and 4 cops to work the thing,
maybe they thought someone might try to steal it !

	Good job you were on your bike Phil!  As for a speed trap there
	than I think that it's perfectly reasonable, it's a residential
	area and yet cars are running through there at up to 60 mph.
	There's no excuse for speeding there.  As for needing a load
	of police to work the gatso - maybe it was a training session.

    My cousin is a traffic cop (you wouldn't believe half the stories he
    tells!!!!) and the only time he uses these things is on a training
    exercise, they can't afford to do it any other way, a sad indictment of
    the way the Police are funded.

Seen outside the back door of the The Crescent this morning a row of traffic
cones across the disabled parking spaces, presumably to stop all the selfish
non-disabled drivers parking their cars there.

But how are the disabled drivers going to move them ?

A friend of mine had to go down to a University of the South coast for an open
day. He has a disabled sticker on his car. As he went through the campas car
park enterence he was stopped by the carpark attendant. He was infomed that he
couldn't park here, but there was some spaces some distance away. My freind
explained that he had a sticker, but was informed that the disabled places were
for lectureres only.  My friend asked were he should park then as he wasn't able
to walk the distance from the remote carpark. The carpark attendant replied;
"Well your disabled, thats your problem".

    Nah, it's been kicking around for a while now.  I think it belongs to
    Porsche UK.  A friend's dad, who is some sort of motoring technical

Re the Bentley, you are a touch close to the factory there and I've seen some
real sights in and around the Cheshire lanes, like the undercoated Mulsanne
Turbo with no chrome and only a bucket seat for the driver being driven flat
out, I was passenger in a Gp1 Rally car with a good driver and he REALLY
struggled to keep up. So it could have been a factory car.

    Seen on a Cadillac something or other  'BODY 63'  except it looked 
    more like a late 80's model to me.  I didn't see the driver though!
