19.899 | well, in a machine shop | RHETT::BURDEN | A bear in his natural habitat | Thu Jan 30 1997 11:14 | 15 |
| I stopped into my local machine shop to see if they could lighten and balance
the flywheel on my diesel Rabbit. While I was in there I saw an interesting set
of heads on one of his benches. There are double OVC with little cage devices
holdin the cams in. Turns out they are from the new 4.3 litre V8 Lincoln
engine. Someone overheated one so he's working on the heads.
The odd thing were how the cams are constructed. They aren't a solid peice
of metal, but rather a single shaft with the lobes slipped over the outside
and held in place somehow. The lobs are about 1/2" wide. It just looked odd.
The machinist was saying some of the new Mitsu or Chrysler engines have the same
type of cams, but they have problems at idle. Seems the lobes get a little
loose and move around at low rpm. Yuch....

What you saw were modern hollow camshafts, saves the industry BIG
bucks. They can cast the lobes and simply polish the running surface.
Then the shaft goes into liquid nitrogen and the lobes come out of the
oven. They are mated together and become one piece "cold welded"
together. With both pieces at room temperature the shaft is slightly
larger than the inside diameter of the lobe. Really slick engineering!

According to http://www.valzog.com/delorean/history.html
Absolutely none of the cars were painted at the factory. Any painted
cars that exist today were painted either by the owner, dealer, or
the liquidator after the company passed into receivership. Grey and
black were the only interior colors ever offered, though the two
GOLD-PLATED cars sold by American Express (at $85,000 each) have
brown interiors.

| John Gill (formerly worked in MR01, now works in HLO) owns a Delorean.
His is unpainted silver.
He did a frame-off restoration of the car after he aquired it. The frame
on these cars is made of plain steel (not Stainless) and is coated with
a hard plastic which was intended to protect the frame from rust.
Unfortunately, the plastic tended to crack in spots from normal stress
and did more harm than good because the moisture became trapped between
the steel and the plastic. John removed all of the plastic from his frame
and painted it with a rust-inhibiting paint. The engine in these cars was
a Volvo 6 cyl motor that was built by Peuguot. John's car is mint and is
hardly ever driven.
Supposedly, John Delorean wanted to use a GM 350 motor in this car,
but GM would not agree to sell him the engines. This would be a
seriously fast car with a 350!

| Seen last week in the parking lot of the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg:
The strangest tractor trailer rig I've seen. It was LONG, maybe 200' or more.
It had something large in the center, covered in a white tarp so I couldn't
tell what it was. The trailer had lots and lots of wheels - a total of 70.
The tractor was a normal-looking 10 wheeler like you see all the time. The
trailer had 5 groupings of 3 axle sections, each axle had dual wheels. Each
of the 5 groupings (2 in front of the "object", 3 behind) appeared to be able
to pivot independently of the others, like the trucks of a railroad car.
From this I assumed whatever this was was HEAVY. It appeared that they were
either loading or unloading the object, from all the support vehicles and
lifting devices around it. The only thing I could think of it was some ice
making refrigerator for the civic center.
Today I heard that a tractor trailer rig that was carrying a 200+ ton turbine
or generator from the Fitchburg GE plant to NYC broke down in Hubbardston (!)
blocking a road there. Perhaps this is what it was.

Generator blocks road in Hubbardston
By Karen Nugent
Telegram & Gazette Staff
HUBBARDSTON _ No, that's not a spaceship sitting on Route 62.
It's a turbogenerator. An enormous one weighing nearly 207 tons. And
it's not going anywhere for at least another day.
A section of Route 62 between Barre Road and Route 68 will remain
closed through today and perhaps through Wednesday, as workers take the
turbogenerator apart and reassemble it onto another truck for the rest
of its journey.
The generator, which takes up the entire road, was en route from the
General Electric plant in Fitchburg to New York when the
tractor-trailer carrying it broke down Saturday afternoon.
The generator's measurements are mind-boggling _ 185 feet long, 16 feet
wide and nearly 16 feet tall. The road is about 18 feet wide, according
to Sgt. Larry Barrett of the Hubbardston Police Department. The
generator weighs 413,704 pounds, he said.
Late yesterday afternoon, workers began disassembling the generator,
using a large crane and other equipment. Curious would-be onlookers
were prohibited from venturing along the road, Barrett said, because of
the heavy equipment being used.
"It's a liability issue,' he said.
While the road is a main thoroughfare in town, he said, there is just
one house in the closed section. Traffic is being rerouted along Barre
Road to Route 62.
"The one thing we can say is that this is not causing a safety hazard.
The one house down there can be reached. If any place would be ideal
for this to happen, I'd have to say that this is the spot,' Barrett
said.
But James C. Murphy, chairman of the Hubbardston Board of Health, is
questioning why such a large and unusual load is traveling through a
rural town in the first place.
"This is so rare. It should be on an interstate. There is no reason in
the world for that thing to be here,' he said. "It's staggering _
something that large. I looked at a map, and it should have gone down
Route 2 east, to Interstate 495 south, to (Interstate) 95 through
Providence.'
Murphy said that when he saw the generator late yesterday afternoon,
it, and the truck, were resting on the slowly sinking ground.
Diane Twiss, who lives at Routes 62 and 68, not far from the site, also
thinks the route through town is odd. She took a 20-minute walk along
Route 62 yesterday morning to get a firsthand look.
"I've never seen anything this big. The whole thing just sounds
secretive and bizarre. Why are they taking this thing down these
country roads? I can't imagine it going over some of these bridges _
these roads aren't made for any kind of real traffic,' she said.
General Electric workers were assembling the generator all last week in
the parking lot of the Wallace Civic Center in Fitchburg, and loading
it onto a specially designed truck. The plant regularly ships heavy
loads via designated routes. Barrett said Route 2 and major highways
are not used because the load is too tall to clear most bridges.
He said the tractor-trailer, owned by the Hallamore Corp. of Holbrook,
was escorted by two state police cruisers _ one in the front and one in
the rear. The trip requires a special permit from the state Department
of Public Works.
A woman who answered the telephone at Hallamore last night said nobody
was available to answer questions about the breakdown. There was no
answer at the GE plant in Fitchburg.

re: RT62
I travel this road a lot and can't imagine what in gawds name they
were doing down there. It's a winding, bumpy, hilly little country
road...not even suitable for an 18wheeler in my opinion. Having that
monstrosity on there is crazy. Better hope they don't need to get any
emergency personnel down there soon....there aren't many roads that
connect with that section of Rt62 and it's a long drive around. Can you
say 'lawsuit'?

| The turbine itself isn't that long - not even as long as your house. :-)
It's that bizarre trailer thing that is so long, because it's so heavy.
I'm trying to figure out:
1) Why didn't they ship the thing by rail (train tracks right next to GE plant)
2) " " " " " in pieces via (normal) trucks, rather than
shipping it in pieces to a parking lot across town, assembling it there,
then having to disassemble and assemble it on some back country road in
Hubbardston.
3) Why through Hubbardston? I guess low bridges may be an answer. I am trying
to figure out how they got from the lot to that area without encountering
low bridges - it may have gone right by my house.

He OBVIOUSLY has never driven down Rte 2 as it passes the Fitchburg/Leominster
border. Can you see that thing barrelling down the road at a swift 30 mph and
trying to stop before it takes out the Rte 12 overpass?! The thing was HUGE, no
way it would have made it under that bridge.

| What most people don't realize is that the state police/hiway
departments are the ones that maps out the routes that these large or
overweight or both loaded trucks can take. They have to plan on making
sure the truck can fit under any overheads and that the bridges that
truck takes can withstand the load.
In California there was one over height load that a trucker had
obtained the needed permits and route info. The CHP/Caltrans made a
mistake and routed him down an interstate with a bridge too low for
his load. He hit it and damaged both the bridge and the load. The
State/CHP had to pay, it was their fault. The CHP cited him for hitting
the bridge but the ticket was thrown out later by a judge. The CHP
planned the route and the driver was to to take the route....

| From what I've seen in the papers the trailer is STILL in Hubbardston. My wife
drove by there yesterday and found that Rte. 62 is still closed from the
weekend. By the way, as I drove by the trailer on Saturday morning the lead
truck in the motorcade was turning into Pioneer Industrial Park, maybe to scout
out an alternative route. The trailer was pulled over on the left side of the
road possibly in anticipation of making that turn. Later in the morning my wife
spotted it on 117. I can't think of any way of getting from the Ind. park to 117
directly (no Rte. 2 overpass), so the lead truck must have found a dead end and
had the trailer take Fort Pond Road to 70, then to 117. What a sight it must
have been going over Rte. ! Whole lotta shakin' goin' on!!

19.955 | A friend of mine used to do this | CADSYS::LARRICK | | Wed Apr 16 1997 10:32 | 16 |
| A friend of mine used to do route planning for big rigs like this one as part of
his job (he's a civil engineer). Basically, the process involves pulling out
maps, looking for possible routes, and verifying (from official records) that
the truck will fit under things it is to drive under, and not collapse things it
is to drive over. I got the impression that the individual states contract this
work to civil engineering firms, as part of the oversize/overweight permit
process.
I guess it's up to the trucking company to follow the route at that point, but
if they take a road that's not on the route and break a bridge, I'd imagine
there would be serious trouble. So I kinda doubt anyone was scouting out routes
along the way, unless they ran into something unexpected.
Does anyone know what actually went wrong with the truck?

If a bridge is under rated for the load, the trucking company will
construct a secondary bridge on top of the weak one so as to spread the
load. This is how they move heavy loads over the exit 30 bridge on I-495
on the way to and from GE in Fitchburg (when the loads come from or go to
eastern locations)
Westerly bound is a different story. There are too many bridges so a route
w/o any underpasses has to be found and 62 is a prime candidate.
Grades aren't an issue, clearances are, however.

be more aprop vs trucks and roadways.
Reminds me of the yuck where some truck had cought itself under a short

way of getting the truck unhooked. Some kid got soshed off because he

re bridge clearance signs:
i was once told by a guy that said he heard it from a civil engineer
that worked on highway bridges, that they measure the lowest clearance,
then subtract one foot to compute what goes on the sign.
that keeps the situation safe when the road is repaved, even several times.
for arched spans, the lowest the lowest clearance is usually at the
edge. for truss spans, the lowest clearance is usually at the crown
of the road.
this was in california. i've not taken any measurement to determine
if the claim fits the facts.

We parked the '24 Stude next to a '25 Model T coupe. Interesting comparison
