5.15'a day at the field' --- a philosophy well expressedSPKALI::THOMASTue Mar 08 1988 14:2422

Bill, I can understand your frustration in having only a limited
amount of time to access the system however I don't agree with any
notion to have this file be strictly a number/data crunching forum.
Similar notions were expressed in the cycles notes file a year ago
and the individual responsible actually went off and created his
own notes file. What happened was that a group of guys stopped using
the cycles file and began to use the other file. After a short period
most came back to the cycles file because of the lack of interest
that the other file had generated.
I like this file as it is. It lends itself to the same type
of atmosphere that a day at the club field would. Yes there would
be some techinical talk and yes there would be some funning. But
what it would be as a hole would be a club type atmosphere. I think
that is what we have here. I doesn't matter what you do in RC you
are welcome into this forum. That is the way it should be. To stop
the funning, trip reports, ect would take away one( not all) of this
files best points.Sorry this is one person who thinks it's your
problem not the files. I don't know how but I have heard there are
ways to extract the files updates automaticly.

5.7We could learn from JOET::HOME_WORKLEDS::LEWISThu Jul 28 1988 12:0333

I agree, recommendations should be made as a reply to the requestor,
it just looked like the topic was going to shoot off into another
AM/FM/PCM/1991 discussion. The pointer to those other notes
is appropriate - I realized this when I started typing in a
warning about older single-conversion FM sets and realized I had
said the same thing before, probably more than once.

  A general comment:

The HOME_WORK notes conference has an active moderator
and a complete directory that seem to work well. If someone comes
in with a topic that has been discussed before such as "how do I
build a deck?", the moderator would write-lock the topic and ask
the author to review the other notes already discussing this
subject. If, after reviewing these discussions, the author still
feels that his topic belongs separate, the moderator releases
the topic without question. If not, the topic gets deleted and
the author starts his discussion as replies to the appropriate topic.
This seems to work very well, and the conference is extremely useful
for reference material. This would be helpful the next time someone
starts a "what should I build for a second plane" topic or "what
kind of radio should I buy" - believe me these things have been
discussed several times! It does require a fairly active moderator and
I'm not sure our moderator would be interested in this task. But
it _would_ prevent people from having to repeat a point several
times. I know Al has had to type in the same advice several times,
as many of us have. Climbing off the soap box now.

My suggestion that AM/FM/PCM discussion be continued in one of the
other topics was not meant to offend anyone, sorry if it did.

5.5moderator policies: establishing the rulesGUSHER::RYDERAlton, who practices omphaloskepsisThu May 25 1989 07:5215
By moderator policies, I mean the guidelines the moderators use in
moving notes, deleting debris, changing titles, etc. in the current RC
notes conference. I believe the policies of the moderators in a hobby
conference should be determined by the user population in open dialog.

Unfortunately, here the moderator policies have become tangled with the
discussion about the future of the conference. To cool that discussion,
both dialogs have been taken off-line. I will create an alternative
mechanism for attaining consensus about the policies, probably a
special, dedicated conference on just the policies.

You are invited to help determine these policies in an off-line
process. If you accept the invitation, please send a MAIL message to
me. If you don't want to be directly involved, but prefer to endorse
the voice of another, then identify your proxy.
5.6entries that move in the nightABACUS::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerWed Apr 18 1990 02:4326
Regarding Kay's request that this material be moved to a proper home,

That is my intention. If you "SHO K/F *GLIDE*", you will notice a new
keyword, GLIDER_HAND_LAUNCH, that points to several entries here.

I usually try to avoid interrupting an active conversation, either
banter or a technical exchange that is contributing new material. So I
will keyword the string (partially as a reminder to myself) and move it
after the conversation has gone quiet for a few days. That way we get
two otherwise conflicting benefits: friendly dialog and future
find-ability. (The friendly dialog aspect was discussed by Tom
Tenerowiczt in the note currently at 239.575; I agreed with him.)

There are two things you can do to help:

If you have two rather unrelated things to say, make them separate
replies so they can later be moved to separate topics.

Refer to recent replies by content or author (e.g. see above)
instead of number. (But this is a nit.)

This reply itself has been keyworded and will be moved to the moderator
    policy topic next weekend.

OK the cold war about what notes file has been won. RC NOTES
is to be the world wide rc notes file. Fine. Is everyone aware
that the file has 1200+ notes within it? I think it's time for
    and archive and restart!!
    	I suggest that...

    	1) A new RCNOTES file be developed.

    	2) The first couple of notes be File specific.

    	3) One of the ifrst few notes contain a listing of the 1200+
topics in this present file and instructions how to access the
    archived file.

    	4) After this some of the more astive notes be copied over to
the new file like Al's trivia note, Who's who, etc...

Probably no more than 20 notes. I'd also suggest a catch all
note where questions could be asked about information that may have
been discussed and needs only to be referenced by a noter. Maybe
a second catch all note where duplicate notes could be sent to
    and then cleaned out.

I'm really not trying to stir up a lot of discussion. It's just
that the file is very big.

5.9Again??NOEDGE::REITHJim Reith DTN 291-0072 - PDM1-1/J9Thu Jul 26 1990 09:5912
I just spent many free minutes looking for information on carbon fiber. It is a
big file and there is a lot of stuff in it. There is now a carbon_fiber keyword
so that the next guy doesn't have to do a search to find it. It should be noted
that the information is in several notes with no mention of carbon fiber in the
titles. Keywords are the only way to relate these notes. If people find a topic
that is spread out this way, please take the time to add a few keywords so that
it IS more accessable.

I think we should stick with the current file. It's gotten MUCH better through
Al Ryder's work in moderating/organizing it and having two (three??) files will
just confuse things. How are you going to crossreference the information between
files? If you want a 20 note file, pop over to DECRCM. That's what it became.
5.10Please update 11.1...CLOSUS::TAVARESJohn--Stay Low, Keep Moving!Thu Jul 26 1990 11:0013
Al Ryder: while we're taking pot shots at this file, how about
updating the keywords? I went looking for my plane cleaner note
yesterday and couldn't find it in 11.1. Had to do a SHO KEY to
get it.

On Tom's suggestion...Just how big can a notes file get? I would
imagine we would be considered quite big, but I'll bet there are
others that put us to shame. Searching through the keywords
directory in 11.1 is really a fast and painless way to find
something (provided its updated), and is not unweildy at this
file's current size.

Thanks for a fine job Al.
5.11AN OPINION.......UPWARD::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) 551-5572Thu Jul 26 1990 11:2917
Arrrrrrgh!, not again. I know you mean well Tom but this is _exactly_
what started the [as you called it] "cold war" in the first place.
This notesfile is actually miniscule compared with some out there
(MOVIES has well over 2000 topics and grows every day).

Thanx to the excellent efforts of Al Ryder, Dan Eaton and company,
information _can_ be painlessly extracted using keywords (re: last
2-replies) and, as long as the conference is as well and
conscientiously moderated as it is nowadays, my opinion is that it
should be left as is and not be further meddled with. No flames here,
    just my personal opinion.

The past few notes just reminded me that I should thank Al Ryder and
gang for making the notes more useful. I looked up all the notes under
HINGES yesterday, before posting my Robart hinge query.

What I forgot to mention was that I was pleasantly surprised at how
_easliy_ I found all relevant topics under the directory. I feel credit
must be given where due, and I have no hesitation in commending those
involved in the great job they have, and are, doing.

I'd like to add my compliments to the moderator(s) of
this file. I thoroughly enjoy this file, read it every day,
and as crazy as it sounds I've undertaking the extremely time
consuming task of spending my lunches reading every topic in
here.(I'm now at 721.xx). Great source of info, many thanks to
all, for the inputs, especially those who've set up the key
       words.

5.16keyword creation change [under trial]BRAT::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerWed Oct 31 1990 07:4728
I made a change to the keyword situation last weekend, and an
explanation is in order, albeit belatedly.

We create new and useful keywords each week, and that is 99% good.
In fact, we are currently considering thirty new keywords relating
to SCALE (details in the next reply) and more relating to gliders.

The 1% problem has to do with DECwindows and with typographical errors
as people ADD keywords to notes. The ADD KEYWORD command implicitly
CREATEs a new keyword if [as it is typed] the keyword is not identical
to an existing keyword, so "PAINT", "PAINTS", and "PAIN" can all be
concurrent keywords. I would clean up such typos during weekend
maintenance. Unfortunately, DECwindows permits innocent users to
accidentally create keywords that I cannot clean up; only the NOTES
engineering group could delete "The F117A is really". Now ADD KEYWORD
is not supposed to CREATE, but it does --- a feature and a bug, and
that half-sentence was once one of our keywords.

So I have restricted keyword creation; any moderator can still create a
new keyword, but user ADDitions will no longer implicitly CREATE. If
this action itself creates new problems, I'll undo it.

Incidentally, I rarely use the ADD KEYWORD command myself. I usually
cannot remember the exact spelling, and I cannot type correctly that
which I can remember, so I use the sequence, "SHO K" and KP7, to ensure
    correct additions.

5.17SCALE keywords --- comments requestedBRAT::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerWed Oct 31 1990 08:0545
I've been talking to Casey about adding about a lot of new keywords
associated with SCALE and then splitting 271 into a handful of separate
topics. The keyword stem, "SCALE_", becomes the top level pointer, the
keywords the next level, and the topic titles the detail pointers. (I
don't repeat keywords within a keyworded topic.) Here is the suggested
list. There are pros and cons: it will take longer to find the right
keyword, but the selection will be much more specific. Nothing's free.

FUN_SCALE_KITS ! to keep them out of serious scale stuff
    SCALE ! a catch-all; note 271 and some miscellany
SCALE_ACCESSORIES ! machine guns, lights, etc.
SCALE_CONSTR_TECH ! like how to make gear doors that fit
SCALE_COMPETING ! including competition rules, etc.
SCALE_COWLS_ETC ! and scale exhausts, dummy motors, ....
    SCALE_DOCUMENTATION
    SCALE_DOC_BY_SELF
    SCALE_DOC_SOURCES
SCALE_ERRORS ! flag for known false stuff and junk
    SCALE_EXTRA_CHNLS ! sliding canopies, landing chutes, ...
    SCALE_FLIGHT_ISSUES
    SCALE_FOLDING_WINGS ! eventually, maybe now
SCALE_GETTING_STARTED	! some tutorials and words of wisdom
    SCALE_HELP_NEEDED ! another catch-all with some bias
    SCALE_KIT_SOURCES
    SCALE_ORGANIZATIONS ! the WWI groups, the 1/8th, ....
    SCALE_PAINTING
SCALE_PAINT_CAMO ! thinking of schemes such as WWI lozenges
    SCALE_PAINT_COLORS ! ? also SCALE_DOC_COLOR ? ? instead?
SCALE_PAINT_REALISM ! actually weathering (but too many letters)
    SCALE_PLANS_BY_SELF
    SCALE_PLANS_SOURCES
SCALE_PROJECT_NOTES ! e.g. the BJ note; well over 20 topics
    SCALE_SUBJECT_PICK
    SCALE_SIZE_QUARTER
    SCALE_SIZE_PEANUT
SCALE_SIZE_SELECT ! ?? bury in GETTING STARTED and HELP?
    SCALE_SOAPBOX !
    SCALE_REPAIRS
    SCALE_RETRACTS
    SCALE_RULES ! as well as SCALE_COMPETING ?
SCALE_WEATHERING ! alternative -- admittedly more than painting

User comments are requested. Otherwise I'll start working on this stuff.

p.s. For technical reasons, keywords should not exceed 19 characters.
5.18and now for new moderationBRAT::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerThu May 28 1992 18:1524
I believe it was in April of '89 that I set out to preserve RC notes as
an information exchange resource. Now I retire and turn it over to others.

Unfortunately, Monday I suffered an attack of Stupidus Solamentium.
While ineptly making my own lunch (Betty was away.), I accidentally
started a grease fire that spread to the kitchen cabinets before I put
it out. (She did indeed want new cabinets anyway, but what a mess!)
The combination of smoke inhalation and a history of severe asthma put
me into the hospital during this, my last, week at Digital. Damn!
I've recovered, but I had planned to use this time to transfer the
moderator files and responsibilities to others. Now I must punt.

I will put the [inadequately documented] files into the next reply and
leave it to the existing people with moderator privileges to settle who
    will do what.

Alton who leaves	with a pride of accomplishment
with shame for my intemperance in April, '89
with an awful sense of loss, losing access to notes
with great regret losing contact with noters
with shame for not documenting what I have and do
with confidence that new moderation will be healthy
with a new building project (kitchen cabinets)

This is a quick dump of my moderation package. The files below must be
edited to change all specific "RYDER" references to be generic logicals.
Actually, they all sort of started that way and became specific over time.
Dumb, but that is reality. Sorry, guys.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have two important subdirectories, [RYDER.MOD.SCRATCH] and
[RYDER.MOD.NEW11]. Of course, there is also [RYDER.MOD] and [RYDER]

[RYDER.MOD.SCRATCH] holds all weekly work files and then is emptied.

[RYDER.MOD.NEW11] holds all command files except for those associated
with the distribution of the RC11 files to those requesting such.

There is also [RYDER.MOD.RC11] and [RYDER.MOD.KEYS]
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have two commands defined:

$sho sym upd

$sho sym bat*

Let's see... There are 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day, so
that gives 1440 minutes in a day. Well, at least I know the upper
    limit on Al's "minutes a day"... :-)

Could a moderator please delete notes 15.30, 15.71, and 15.77 about the R/C
Divot Diggers in Ware MA. The club has lost the field described and is in the
process of trying to reform. It will be a different club should they find a
field. I can't since my node has changed several times since.
