| | For the S.W. contest at Scottsdale, Feb. 1-2, most of us meekly sent
in our entry forms and let it go at that. However, Thornburg never
content to let us off easily, included the following with his entry:

                NOTICE OF INTENT TO WHOMP

WHEREAS a modest Contingent of the Sapient Soaring Citizens of the
Sonorous City of Albuquerque (State of Nuevo Mexico) have duly
published their Intentions of attending the Annual Arizona Aerial
Attrition Affair, known formally as the Southwest Winter Soaring
    Contest; and

WHEREAS said Soaring Citizens have signified their Seriousness in
purSuing sweet Success in said situation; and

WHEREAS some such success surrounded their recent summer sojourn to
    Springerville; therefore

BE IT KNOWN TO ALL AN SUNDRY that said Soaring Citizens, almost
certain to be referred to as THE ALBUQUERQUE TURKEYS, especially should
said Citizens show with scintillating shirts (of Albuquerquoise
Turquoise) and superior sly smiles (Albuquerque smirkys) and, most
important, with substantially similar set resolves,

NAMELY AND TO WIT: to whomp the sweet bejabbers out of the Soaring
Citizens of Central Arizona, hereinafter called the Phoenix Kleenex,
said Whomping to be verified by the simple summation of the top five
scores of the citizens of each separate society, subsequent to the
    contest.

FURTHERMORE, that such Whomping be not soon forgotten, the sad loser
of said scrimmage, whether KLEENEX or TURKEYS, stands summarily
sentenced to supply sumptuous segments of SWEET, ICY WATERMELON
at this summer's Springerville soaring session.

                        So be it.

    T-shirts.
He supplied us with large turkey iron-on transfers that he picked

| 546.6 | Bad news if true | HANNAH::REITH | Jim HANNAH:: Reith DSG1/2E6 235-8039 | Thu Jun 18 1992 08:39 | 8 |
| | Art Faria, who works at Tom's Hobby Korner, informed me last night that the
Downeast Soaring Club has lost the use of the sod farm in Biddeford. Ken Baker
has stepped down as president (announced in the last newsletter). The 8/9
sanctioned contest will probably be held at a field in Litchfield NH. I should
get a newsletter in the next week or so with more details and/or confirmation
of this rumor. This is a shame if it's true. Keep in mind that this was a
glider only site so noise wasn't a factor. A great loss to the New England
glider contest circuit if true.

| 546.7 | Fall Foliage Glider Contest Oct.4, NH | LEDS::KLINGENBERG |  | Mon Sep 28 1992 13:01 | 32 |
| | This is to remind all of you that are interested of the Fall Foliage
R/C glider contest to be held next Sunday in new Boston, NH. I had the
pleasure of visiting Al Ryder this past Saturday. Best regards to all
of you, he is doing very well and putting a lot of effort into
preparing the contest. Rules will be similar to the previously
announced April 5 contest, it's also the same field.

He will have HLG, two meter, open and perhaps standard class (if there
are at least 3 flights per class). Soaring is international duration
with spot landing, but not on a circle, but within a landing strip.
Additional event will be an F3B-like speed event. It will have it's own
scoring independent of the other events, you may use a special plane or
ballast your regular. It is intended to give people a chance to try it
without spending the $$$ for real F3B equipment.

Cost is $10 pre-registration including lunch (all classes) or
            $15 field registration without lunch.

Prizes are awarded at least for the HLG and soaring events.

Schedule is 8:00 free coffee and doughnuts during registration and
    check-in
    9:00 pilots meeting
9:30 alternating rounds of HLG and soaring
    3:00 Fun event (speed run)

If interested, send me mail to get a flyer. For pre-registration, call
or write to Alton Ryder, CD, Lamson Road, Mont Vernon, NH 03057,
    Phone-# (603)673-1776

    Best regards,
                    Hartmut

| | I just talked to Al and he seems to think that he's got quite a crew coming
to the contest. He's somewhat puszzled by some of the missing registrations
from the DEC group. $10 this week gets you registered and lunch. $15 with no
lunch on sunday. Schedule is 1 round of HLG to start the day. Three rounds
of 2 meter and open flying. A time window will be declared and it's the
pilot's responsibility to get into the air before the close of the window.
Another round of HLG and then the speed runs at about 3pm. Landings will be
for a small number of points and will be along a 50' strip. if a piece of
the plane overlaps the strip, you get the points.
He has patches for all entrants and seems to have LOTS of prizes for the
contest.

Sure.
There will be a contest on 17-Oct in Minot Maine - HLG and Unlimited.
I'm not sure who the CD is but a call to Ken Baker (207)865-3079
will get you all the info you need.
There will be a contest on 24-Oct in Knox Maine - Hand Tow.
The CD is Rick Hallett (207)487-3058.
Both Minot and Knox are near Waterville but one is North West
and the other South East.
Two different clubs.
I'll be at the National Sailplane Symposium on the 24th but so I haven't
been paying much attention to that contest but I hope to make the Minot
contest.
I have a flyer for the 24th and an old flyer for a previous Minot contest
with map - they are both in the mail to you.
Bye the way - the flyers were mailed to us from the DSC (Downeast Soaring
Club).

| | I had to stop by Tom's Friday on my way home form work to pick up a
few things and had a talk with Art Farier. He's as itchy as anyone to
get out flying and is looking forward to Al Ryder's contest on the
10th. Then he mentioned that Al was thinking of cancelling the contest
because the Charles river club had decided to hold a contest on the
same day. I guess at the last meeting a few days ago, they voted to
have a STOCK SPIRIT contest. All you can fly is the stock spirit and
there will be no winches. Just high starts. Does anyone know if this is
just a club contest or if it's open???????

Art was also telling me about this guy that lives near him that managed
to talk his way into a brand new FREE Shadow. He's going to do a
product report on it. From what Art says, he (art) spends more time
fixing the guys mistakes than the guy does building. I think the review
is going to be for RCSD. Should be an interesting one.

He also said that Jim Tyre has a new Shadow ready to go. He finally
retired the Falcon and GAVE it to Steve Schomer.

Art is in the process of building a new 2 meter Accipiter and still has
his Legend as his unlimited ship.

It should be an interesting season.

| 546.18 | We don't have a date for the contest! | MR4DEC::ANKER | Anker Berg-Sonne | Sat Mar 20 1993 17:37 | 32 |
|  |         Re:              <<< Note 546.17 by SNAX::SMITH "I FEEL THE NEED" >>>
        Steve,

I am the instigator and leader of the CRRC Spirit effort.
Let me start of by saying that I have NOT settled on a date for
any contestsm so I don't knowwhere Al Ryder has his information
        from.

The idea this developed fromeveolved from a desire to get
more members into gliders. To avoid the "I will need to invest
in a computer radio and a $500 glider to win" syndrome we decided
to create a one-design class and let the membership vote on the
particular glider. I recommended the Oly II, but the members
liked the 2 meter Spirit, so we went with that. The response has
been simply incredible, I believe there are about 30 Spirits
        being built!

The rules are real simple. The plane must be built from
a stock Spirit kit and you cannot do anything to make the plane
stronger, lighter or aerodynamically more efficient than the
stock plane built exactly according to the plans. Conformance
        will be based on trust.

We will start with some clinics and then organize a
number of contests. The contests will be AMA sanctioned and open
to non-CRRC members as long as their planes conform with the
        one-design rules.

It looks like this will be a blast!

        Anker

| 546.26 | and then there's Simsbury | SNAX::SMITH | I FEEL THE NEED | Wed May 05 1993 07:50 | 13 |
| | June 6th is also the Simsbury Spring Challange contest. From the
standpoint of winch availibility (as opposed to ray's) I think it will
be a better "warmup" then the funfly.

It's been awhile since I've used Ray's winch, but last Saturday I found
that I could hold Charlie's Pulsar and completely stall the winch
without too much effort. I didn't let it go that far of course but I
could tell I easily could have.

I'd hate to miss the first funfly of the year, but I don't know if my
new funfly plane will be ready or not and I have nothing else
FUNflyable. Plus I have alot of money invested in gliders to be passing
    up fairly "local" contests.

| | I've been disappointed the last two times I've gone to Simsbury. My
new fun-fly plane WILL be ready and we'll have other winches than
Ray's for the contests this year. Rene is running the glider stuff
and he bought a sport winch (which I haven't seen but it's GOT to be
better than Ray's) I should have mine by then too but I have no idea
how it'll pull.
 |
| 546.28 | Same Winch | LEDS::WATT |  | Wed May 05 1993 08:01 | 15 |
| | Rene's winch is IDENTICAL to Ray's. If they had real batteries they
would be much better! A winch needs a Marine Deep Discharge battery
that is much larger than the one Ray and Rene's winch uses. Their
winches were designed around a small battery for some reason. At the
glider contest, we used an external battery and it helped some.

Steve, don't you still have the Unic flying?

I plan to support the club's funflies at least the first one. I'd like
to especially see more glider participation. (myself included for the
    first time.)

| | Charlie, the Unic is retired in as much as it's "guts" are concerned.
The servo's are going in the Goblin, the tank is in the trainer, the
wheel's are on the trainer, the motor is on the trainer, etc.

By the way, looking through my funfly dates file, mine says that the
first CMRCM funfly is Sunday June 14th, not June 6th. The 6th is also the
    LLFC pattern funfly.

| | So who's planning on attending the CRRC glider contest this coming
    weekend?????????

    Just Saturday???????
    Just Sunday?????????
    Both Days???????????

Right now I'm scheduled to work Saturday but may have the option to
swap for next Saturday. That would leave both days open. Or I could
just fly Sunday. Havn't decided yet.

Also, does anyone remember what they charge for this thing????????

| | I'm hoping to go both days. My wife is busy both days so I'm free. I think it's
$12 per day pre-registered and $15 at the contest. I got a registration form in
the mail but I noticed that Tom's had them on his bulletin board. I'd hoped to
have a new Alcyone ready for the contest but I don't think I have much of a
chance. It is a one class contest (and some of the ESL guys are cutthroat/TOO
serious) so I'll probably take the time to tighten the servos int he Alcyone (I
have a lot of play in the wing servos) and not rush the new wings/fuselage.
Sal will be coming down for just sunday flying a Shadow. This seems to be his
latest love.

| | Yeah, I know the picnic is this weekend. I was disappointed it conflicted. Looks
like this is the only big glider contest I'm going to make so I'd like to do
both days (I need to meet Sal on sunday anyway).
