| As usual using the treadmill, I was reading an article in M&F by
Metzner talking about speed and weight being better muscle growers
than heavy weight lifted tradtionally. There was some formula and
stuff in the article but basically the example they used was a person
doing pyramid benching 10 sets 6-10 reps increasing weights between
sets done in 10 minutes is far better than doing 3 kinds of benches, 4
sets with 6-10 reps pyramiding done over say 20 minutes. The theory
was intesity and muscular stress occurs better in shorter duration
focused lifts verses the tradional lifting routines. Anyone else read
this and has anyone tried this?

| 10 sets in 10 minutes? Can you try to elaborate a little? Did he start
very low and pyramid up quickly? Any concern about sloppy form when
lifting at that speed? Is it effective for all muscle groups?

I have to admit, I read the article rather quickly and really didn't
pay detailed attention to it, which is why I asked if anyone else had
more info. If I can find that mag tomorrow, I'll try and read it again.
It was something that fast though.

| Thanks for re-checking for me, Bri. I confess to being totally amazed
at some people in the gym who do their reps at a furious pace. I always
wonder what, exactly, they are getting out of it, since momentum seems
to play a big part in the lifts. I'm having trouble figuring out how
to lift that fast without using momentum to 'cheat'. Hmmm, maybe if
they use momentum, they can go a bit heavier and still get the same
benefit? And then you can add in some aerobic benefit if you are
REALLY fast with the change-ups. Hmmm, ponder, ponder, ponder...

I know that in some excercises that I intermingle, speed and number is
the key. For instance Stripping. Thats benching starting with more
weight than you ever lifted and pumping 1-2 then without rest having a
partner strip off 5 lbs a side then do as many as you can pause strip
off 5 more etc etc. You keep going till the bar hits your chest and
you can't go anymore. Then there are 21's for biceps, I have also been
known to start at the beginning of the dumbbell rack and work my way up
without pause. These though are random lifts that I intersperce very
infrequently when I need to shock myself into more intensity. But to
use such intensity on a weekly or even monthly basis would be too much.
I agree with you, under these circumstances one can easily cheat and
allow the momentum to get you up for a bunch.

| I have read Mikies stuff. Its good. You have to be heavy to begin with.
I think allot of his stuff is for super setting, or for those who are
Weeeeder fans, huge and humgous setting.:)
