| A good catalog to have around is the SIG Model Builders Wish Book.
The 1987 edition is available. I don't usually order anything direct
from SIG but the catalog is a good reference of whats available.
It can be had by sending $3.00 to:
SIG Manufacturing Company, Inc.
401 South Front St.
Montezuma, Iowa 50171
Phone 515-623-5154
800-247-5008 (Orders only)
P.S. Don't bother to call and try to get the catalog for free.
(At least they would not send me a freebie)

| Ok you guy's up in Yankee land, you have an easy life getting RC gear and pay
peanuts for it. How about this as an idea for a notes subject to help us less
fortunate being's in Ozie land and maybe even the Poms (Hi Bob) over the pond.
We hear many war stories of poor service from Mail Order Houses. You guy's
having greater access, and I assume more experience in using such
establishments give us the benefit of your knowledge and tell us the good (and
the bad), and some idea of the specialist houses for unusual items that may be
don't advertise widely. Remember we don't have the advantage of Toll free 800
numbers to shop around.
To start things off can anybody give me a name, address, phone number and hours
of business of a mail order house that keeps the more specialized performance
accessories such as Fox aluminum spinners, Pico pipes and Carbon props. We have
trouble getting a reliable supplier in Oz for such items. I make my own Props
at this stage but it is time consuming and I would rather buy them if I can
find a good prop at a realistic price.

| John,
I've had excellent luck/service from Tower Hobbies. I'd be surprised
if you could come up with many (if any) items they don't stock,
e.g. kits, radios, engines, hardware, props, accessories, glues,
paints, even pins, rubberbands, etc., etc. ad infinitum.
Their mailing address is: Tower Hobbies
P.O. Box 778
Champaign,
Illinois 61820
You said you couldn't use a toll-free 800 number but they list a
"non" toll-free number which might be of use: 217-398-3636.
Order one of their biiiig yearly catalogs and look through it...I
think it's just what yer' lookin' fer'.

9.3 | Tower, Tammie's, and Ace | CLOSUS::TAVARES | John--Stay low, keep moving | Tue Nov 24 1987 10:26 | 32 |
| Firstly, I have to agree about Tower; in all my dealings with
them, they have been 100% professional. I don't like their
service charge of $5, sometimes when you balance the service
charges, other companies come out a few bucks ahead. But Tower
does have the stuff, in stock all the time, at the advertised
price, no foolin'.
The best alternative to Tower, in my opinion, is Mutchler's;
sorry, I don't have the address handy. They didn't have the K&B
.20 in stock when I tried to order it from them, despite an
advertisement for it at a special price.
I might add that I usually buy 1 or 2 specific items at a time,
seldom big ticket stuff, so the service charge is a factor. I
don't think it would mean much if you bought $100 at a crack.
Tammie's Hobbies in Oregon actually backed off on their
advertised price for the .20. When I pointed out that the engine
was advertised in the current RCM, and was ordering within the
dateline stated in the ad, the engine was suddenly out of stock.
I wound up paying the extra and buying it from Tower -- again,
because they didn't play games.
ACE, of course, is always excellent to deal with.
I don't know of any RC type specialty houses, outside of the
usual plans services, or people who sell one or two items in
their product line; cottage industries.
I do know of a few specialty houses for free flight, rubber, and
indoor. Anyone interested in these places can contact me
offline.

I don't have an answer on what happened to the airplanes. I'm
going flying with Bruce Richmond this weekend and I'll ask
him. I think they have been selling the engines. Seems like
he told me some ended up Down Under.
Why no more FAI. I think it's money and time. Someday there will
be an overall change do to noise. F1 takes a lot of time and money.
Fuel is $ 25 to $30 a gallon. Engines don't last long at 65% to
70% Nitro, etc. A lot of us are into Quarter Midget and Q500 too.
Add em up and there just isn't the time or money left.
However I do plan to try FAI at this years nats. I'll probably convert
an old F1 and use a stock engine. I'd rather go slow rather than
sit around and watch.
Hope you do well at your NATS,
Bob

My copy always arrives a week or two after the beginning of the new phone
sales. I always figure I'll just badger them about the late arrival
on the phone and they will honor a late phone special. So far I haven't
seen anything expire that I just had to have. I have however ordered items
that were not on the phone special and got the phone special price.
During Xmas I suspect they ignored expiration times because so many folks
were having a hard time getting their phone calls thru in prime time.

The July issue of RCM has an ad for a new mail order house.
OmniModels
P.O. Box 3397
Bloomington Il 61702-3397
This is interesting for a couple of reasons. The owner is the
former marketing director for Tower Hobbies, Dave Redden. The
ad gives a list of promises to the customer, all of which are
aimed at the common complaints about Tower.
1) Toll free numbers for everything. 800-535-6664
2) Lower shipping charges. $2.00 for orders up to $75.00, no charge
for orders over $75.00
3) One price per product. No special discounts that have different
stock numbers.
It will be interesting to see if they can live up to these promises
and if they will give Tower any real competition.

9.14 | Doug's Hobby Shop | PNO::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) | Fri Jul 15 1988 12:05 | 52 |
| I _still_ contend that Tower's just not that bad and that other
mail-order houses have similar and worse problems/service.
Case in point: At the Colorado Springs Masters Qualifier, I was
fortunate enough to win a $75 gift-certificate from Doug's Hobby
Shop in Waldorf Maryland who advertise a mail-order service
appproximately quarterly in several of the larger magazines. I
sent an order in for a deluxe Sullivan starter, a Top-Flite Monokote
heat-gun (to use for applying Super Coverite and, if I lose my head,
film coverings too) and Spring-Air retract hand-pump with built-in
pressure guage.
The order arrived in about 2-weeks (compared to 4-5 days with Tower)
but the hand-pump had been back-ordered, even though the girl who
took the order had told me the item _was_ in stock. Then, upon
determining polarity of the power cord prior to installing connectors
on the new starter, I found, to my disappointement, that the switch
was screwed up; the starter was _ON_ all the time...no way to shut
it off!
Upon calling Doug's with this news, they tried to persuade me to
send the starter back to Sullivan, at which suggestion I balked
and put the responsibility on _them_ to replace the defective
merchandise and deal with Sullivan themselves, just like a local
hobby shop would do. This they grudgingly agreed to do.
Inquiring into the status of the back-ordered hand-pump, I found
that they hadn't the foggiest notion when they'd be able to ship
this item. Plus, _I_ had to remind them what my balance/credit
was when the item _was_ finally in stock.
Hey, Tower may not be perfect...I'm certainly not trying to say
they are. But, in terms of service and efficiency, they definitely
appear more professional than many of the other such outfits.
As far as multiple prices, this is how they rate/track sales during
various periods of the year. You'll notice that stock numbers change
with _every_ issue of the Tower-Talk catalog so that sales for that
period can be tracked...not an unusual practice at all. Plus, while
I've read statements to the contrary herein, when I've called in
an order, I've had them tell me, "Oh yes, that item's on special this
month" and give me the lowest current price. Of course, once a
special has expired, you can no longer get an item for that price
but what's so strange about that? I know of no commercial/retail
stores that will honor a sale price after an advertised expiration
date...none that desire to stay in business, at least.

9.15 | America's Hobby Center: 212-675-8922 | CLOSUS::TAVARES | John -- Stay low, keep moving | Fri Jul 15 1988 12:32 | 18 |
| I know we have a topic about mail order houses in general, but
I'm here so here goes: I ordered my Fox .36 from America's Hobby
Center. Normally I'd order from Tower, if for no other reason
than they send me a great catalog and flyers. But America's
offered a $38 price on the Fox, much lower than anyone else.
Anyway, the order was processed quickly, and I received my engine
in about a week. They also sent along a newspaper-like catalog
for airplanes, and one for (ugh) trains, which I passed on to Dan
Eaton. America's does not accept plastic, a major inconvenience
in my opinion. My Fox was shipped COD, which brought the total
S&H charge to $5.50; $3 for America's, and $2.50 for the Postal
Service.
While I got a good deal on the Fox, I must add that America's
prices in general are higher than Tower, probably due more to
volume than anything else. This will be a major factor in this
new house staying in business.

Newsgroups: rec.models.rc
Subject: Re: Fox Engines Info/Inexpensive Motors
Date: 27 Feb 91 08:49:25 GMT
Organization: Inland Steel Research Labs; East Chicago, IN
If you are concerned about the high cost of the better quality
motors, you can shop around for better prices. I have found
that AAA Model Supply (Kingsport TN, phone 1-800-735-0252)
consistently has the lowest prices of the mail order hobby
companies for the quality engines. You can purchase an
OS 46 FS-ABC for $122 or an Enya 45 CXTV for $112 or a YS
Futaba 45 for $117 or a Super Tigre 45 for about $100. The
Enya SS(Super Sport) series of engines are very reasonably
priced ($60-80), but I don't know how good they really are. I
know I didn't answer your question about Fox motors; I'll
leave that up to the Fox fanatics.

but they are, so here are two kite suppliers:
Into the Wind

Into the Wind has good service and they take credit cards. They offer a

Their prices are okay.

Haddonfield, NJ 08033

High Fly is run out of Fran Gramkowsky's home, so call in the evenings

Both of these firms have catalogs that are free for the asking. They
both offer pretty good service.

9.26 | CS Flight Systems catalogue | KAY::FISHER | Stop and smell the balsa. | Wed May 08 1991 14:23 | 50 |
| I recently sent a SASE to CS Flight Systems in Middleboro, MA. asking
for a copy of their catalogue. I have seen several references to this
outfit in the electric columns of the magazines - all saying favorable
things.
After a week my envelope came back with a scribbled reply that their
catalogue is $4.00.
OK - I'm easy - I sent them $4.00 (plus I'm now on my 3rd stamp).
The other day the "catalogue arrived".
It is about 35 pages of 8.5x11 paper of various colors stapled
together. The first 8 pages give their prices and sale stuff
and list how many wonderful products they carry. Then the rest
is a Zerox copy of the actual vendors (ACE, Astro, etc. stuff) to
which you are to apply the correct discount to figure the actual
price.
OK - hokey - but I can live with that. So I looked up the only
electric thing I have a memorized price for. The Astro-Flight
mini-challenger is sold by Tower, Hobby USA, and just about
everybody in the world for $99.99.
CS Flight Systems has this on their sale sheet for only
$110.95
Their front page says in big print "WE ARE WORKING AT BEING
THE #1 SUPPLIER FOR ELECTRIC FLIGHT".
Their return policy stated on the last page is "ALL RETURNS must
be approved by phone. ALL SALES are final on electric items."
Now let's see - if I order the mini-challenger from them I can
use VISA because it is over the $10.00 min order so that's OK
so $110.95 + $7.00 shipping = 117.95 + I still get to pay Mass state
sales tax on the base price = $123.50.
No mention of getting my $4.00 back on the first order either.
The owner is Charley Sylvia so as they say in the Tuna commercials -
SORRY CHARLEY!

England glider contest (Simsbury this sunday or Biddeford ME on the

shipping involved. If you've read the Old Buzzard's soaring book and

on the gliders. They really enjoy the hobby and are more then willing
to bend your ear on the phone. I found that they were very helpful when
I mentioned looking for a competitive open class plane on a limited
budget. If you're into gliders, this is THE catalog to spend your money

9.39 | A&M Aircraft gone | SOAEDS::FRANCO | Spin, crash and burn! | Thu Jun 17 1993 09:10 | 19 |

I'm not sure if this is the correct topic to place the following, if
not moderator you might want to move it.
For those of you into big scale, i.e. 1/4 scale and such, and have
purchased Sachs engines from A&M Aircraft be aware of the following.
A&M is again OUT OF BUSINESS. Contrary what you might read in
RC Report, i.e. Jim Van Loos article in the June '93 issue, A&M is
no longer functioning. I just received a letter from them dated
6-10-93 stating, and I quote "A&M Aircraft is no longer in business."
This letter was in response to a request I made about the repairs of
my Sachs 2.0 I sent them in early May.
Phone calls are answered by an answering machine stating to leave name,
phone number, etc.
Just wanted to let you know.

9.40 | Don's Hobbies - Colorado | KAY::FISHER | High Tech Red Neck! | Wed Jan 12 1994 14:11 | 55 |
| Don's Hobbies (303)353-3115 - someplace on Colorado I think.
Over Christmas vacation I was working on a new HLG (Lit Bird)
when I got to deciding the fuselage width and the distance
between two formers. At this time I would like to have had
the receiver. But I did not so I used a mock up balsa block
and determined that the only one that would fit (just) was the
RCD 535. No problem I kept building and then later called Tom's
Hobbie Korner in Chelmsford MA. to order one.
No problem says his assistant - just come over first and leave a
deposit.
No problem says I - bye.
Steamed I procrastinated for a couple of weeks then called the Hobby
Emporium in Nashua N.H. I have a 10 percent discount certificate for
this hobby shop that I received at some contest.
No problem says the clerk - just drop bye and leave a deposit.
No problem says I - I'll leave a deposit if you pay my gas mileage
from Orange.
So I start trying to assemble my order for mail order. Trying
to find receivers that are compatible with Transmitters etc.
I ended up calling ACE and asking them for the name of their
largest wholesale customer. This lead me to Don's Hobbies.
I called Don and ordered 1 ACE Nautical Commander System, one
RCD Rx, one Futaba R114H Rx (yes AM non-dual conversion guys)
and 3 S133 micro servos. Total around $400.
Now don't get me wrong - I end up a Tom's frequently and I wouldn't
mind leaving a deposit if I was there or if I happened to be
going there for something else soon - and I will.
But I wanted that RCD Rx YESTERDAY!
And some of these hobby shop owners wonder why people mail order stuff.
Summary
Don's can get nearly anything - has competitive prices and doesn't
require you to drive over first and leave a deposit.
Yes I volunteered to leave my VISA number at Tom's Hobby Korner and the
Hobby Emporium and no that wasn't good enough.
Bye --+--

9.41 | Don's and other matters | CXDOCS::TAVARES | Have Pen, Will Travel | Wed Jan 12 1994 17:32 | 20 |
| If its the Don's Hobbies I know, its in Greeley, a delightful college
town near the Wyoming border, north of Denver. I made a pilgrimage
there several years ago and wrote something on it in the Hobby Shops
note. I suspect it has changed somewhat since my trip there, since
they're talking competitive prices and availablility; this store was
interesting because of some of the old bargains to be found there.
Funny, I had some time last week and was thinking of making it up
there, but stayed in Denver instead.
BTW--I don't know if anybody has noticed, but Colorado Discount
Hobbies, AKA B&K (or something like that) Hobbies in Englewood is no
longer. Like they came in one night and put a medical supplies office
in there, erasing all knowledge and evidence of possibly the best
hobby shop in the state. However, in my foray last week I discovered
an old place, Blue Yonder Hobbies, that I thought had gone out of
business, has expanded nearby. Its pretty good, though no match of
the late great Colorado Discount.
Huh, nothing to do with mail order!

9.42 | Cheap brushes | KAY::FISHER | BXB2-2/G08 DTN 293-5695 | Thu Apr 28 1994 11:40 | 22 |
| I just received an interesting order from:
Improvements
4944 Commerce Parkway
Cleveland, OH 44128-5985
(800)642-2112
It's kinda hard to describe what they sell but what I purchased was
324 disposable paint brushes for $30
Yes I said 324. Mostly they are the small acid brushes that I like to
use for epoxy but basically I have always been on the lookout for
cheap brushes. Most of the time I'd rather discard than clean up.
Anyway - can't hurt to call toll free for a catalogue!
