398.0. "LSF, the League of Silent Flight" by K::FISHER (Battery, Mags, & Gas Off!) Fri Dec 11 1987 16:20

I was reading the "About the Author" section in the latest RCM
article on the "Chuperosa" 60" glider. It said that the author
is LSF Level IV, working toward Level V.

OK - what is this LSF Level stuff?

Hmmmmm (Low Slow Flight)

LSF stands for League of Silent Flight... It si a group dedicated
to supporting/encouraging the development of people who want to
fly RC gliders. They have a complete instructional program from
raw beginner like me (and you) to grand master. Each level have
a well define skill level to be attained. They also will put in
contact with other LSF members dedicated to helping you master the
    skill of glider flying.

I don't know the HQ address but I vaguely remember it being in the
midwest somewhere... Contact the AMA or talk to someone thats
into gliders (or part of "power structure") at your club. They
    should know where to go.

When I was in CXO three years ago I worked on my LSF I. Primarily
it was showing proficiency in landing and if I remember roccect
you had to have one or a couple of flight of 10 minutes. I don't
remember the specifics. It is a systematic set of steps designed
to challange the flyer at all levels and grow the flyer. There were
two guys in the club PPSS that were working or their level V. This
included having some number of contest wins and demiostarted flying.
If I remember one only hav to complete his 8hr. slope fly to get
    his level V.

I don't belong to the club, so I don't know much about them,
except that they're well and healthy, with a beautiful, secure
site out east of town. I've talked with Mike on the phone, and
have met him when he occasionally flies power at our club.

That Level V is quite an accomplishment. I understand that Mike,
and presumably anyone else who tries it, had to dedicate a couple
of years of hard effort in going to contests and making the
requisite tasks. But the slope was the real dog, since its not
too big up here. Which is something I don't understand; there
are lots of great hills and plenty of wind in the summer. One
thing is that the PPSS field is at a grass (that's sod for you
ex-sixties types) farm out east of town. Quite flat. They have
to go up towards Denver to do the slope thing, and they only do
that a couple of times a year. Mike mentioned that the site and
wind is not so much the problem for Level V as is the duration of
the wind; it seldom blows for 8 hours straight. You couldn't
prove that by me: I swear it blows all day every day.
398.5Eights hours non-stop?BZERKR::DUFRESNEVAX Killer - You make 'em, I break 'emMon Dec 14 1987 16:584
8 hours: do you mean have to fly for 8 hours continuous ??
Or did I miss something on the channel?

398.6Non-stop!CLOSUS::TAVARESJohn--Stay low, keep movingTue Dec 15 1987 10:3114
No, its continuous! There's also a thermal task that's equally
outrageous, plus you have to win a certain amount of contests at
a certain level. One of the things I don't like about gliders is
the idea of "tasks", where everyone does certain things. I just
can't get myself motivated to have fun while doing "tasks"; too
much like the old days when I'd go for a nice "fun" sailboat race
and work harder than at my job.

I read somewhere that there's talk of a higher level than V.
Suppose they walk on water for that?

But glider contests are interesting; I spent several days in the
hot sun watching them at the Reno Nats. Can't fault the fellows
for their dedication or the high tech complexity of the models.
398.7BUT, "THAT'S" THE POINT........GHANI::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8)Tue Dec 15 1987 16:2735
    Marc,

That's exactly the point [challenge] of the higher LSF levels.
You must be able to thermal and/or slope soar for the durations
specified, in this case 8-hours. This is not at all unthinkable
as, on a good, warm, thermal-active day, a sailplane, full-scale
or model, can stay up indefinitely, dependant only upon the skill
of the pilot and "that's" what they're trying to prove, pilot
    proficiency/skill.

My buddy, Gerald Martin [the Confederate Air Force pilot from Hereford,
Texas] owns a Schweiser (sp?) 1-26 sailplane and frequently flies
it for several hundred mile distances pursuing a little game he
and his group play wherein the first pilot takes a trophy along
and flies as far as he can from their base sailport and leaves the
trophy there. All anyone has to do to "win" the trophy is be skilled
enough to fly there and get it. His task, then, is to try to fly
even farther and, again, drop off the trophy for the next guy to
    try to "win."

I visited Gerald last summer and we went down to Hobbs, New Mexico
and renter a 2-seat, high performance Vlanick sailplane. We "got
off the hook" [released from the tow-plane] at around 12:30 PM and
were still having a ball when dusk settled about 8:30 PM, forcing
us to land...that's 8-hours in a powerless aircraft and we could've
stayed up longer but for the absence of daylight. We'd flown a
roughly rectangular course covering more than 500 miles and, frankly,
I was "more" than ready to come down. I'm a pretty big guy [6'-4",
225 lbs.] and I was really stiff from being confined in the cramped
cockpit for so long. Fortunately, long flights are S.O.P. for sail-
planes and relief-tubes are standard cockpit equipment...but for
that, I guarantee, we'd have landed "way" before we finally did.

    Adios,	Al

398.8Progress - but slowK::FISHERThere's a whale in the groove!Tue May 17 1988 12:1617
Last Thursday I finished the last of 5 spot landings and sent in my LSF
voucher for level I. It requires 5 landings within 3 meters of a target
and 2 thermal durations of greater than 5 minutes or 1 thermal and 1 slope
of greater than 10 minutes. Seemed pretty wimpy till I actually got
the voucher in my hand and needed things signed off. Then I couldn't
find a good thermal or hit a decent landing for beans.

At any rate now that is done level II looks a little more interesting.
10 Spot landings within 1.5 meters and 2 each 10 (or 15 I forget) minutes
thermals (or 1 thermal and one 30 minute slope) and you must compete in
6 contests and place in one. Looks like the biggest challenge here will
be to find 6 local contests in one summer - sigh.

SOARING ACCOMPLISHMENTS PROGRAM of THE LEAGUE OF SILENT FLIGHT

Section 1 - INTRODUCTION
The LSF Soaring Accomplishments Program consists of sequential
performance tests or "Levels," as they shall be referred to hereafter, for
flying radio controlled (R/C) model sailplanes which meet current FAI
specifications.

Section 2 - LEVEL I (PRIMARY)
The performance tasks pursuant to Level I are presented in the Soaring
Accomplishments Program, Requirements Summary, Section 12. Upon
completion and documentation of the Level I tasks, the Aspirant must
submit the performance documentation voucher to the LSF Executive
Board for the membership enrollment. After acceptance of the voucher, the
LSF Executive Board will award the Member his LSF number and remit a
Level II performance documentation voucher. The Member may then
display a red I centered immediately below a Soaring Accomplishments
Program insignia, and his LSF number.

Section 3 - LEVELS II THROUGH IV (INTERMEDIATE)
As in the previous Level, the vouchers are submitted, accepted and a
voucher for the next Level is returned. As earned, the Red II will be
displayed to the immediate left of the Soaring Accomplishments Program
insignia, the III to the right, and the IV centered immediately above the
insignia.

Section 4 - LEVEL V (ADVANCED)
Level V is formulated to recognize advanced knowledge, skill and
determination in R/C model soaring. Skill in slope soaring is mandatory,
as Level V is intended to delineate extensive experience in all facets of
R/C model soaring. The earned silver V will be displayed immediately
above the red IV.

Section 5 - WITNESSES
Verification of each task of each Level requires the signature of qualified
witnesses.

The approved witnesses for non-competitive requirements shall be:

(a) Level I: One witness, over 21 years of age, who is not related to the
pilot, or one witness, holding Level I status or higher, who is not
    related to the pilot.

(b) Level II: Same as for Level I.

(c) Level III: Two witnesses, as in Level I.

(d) Level IV: Same as for Level III.

(e) Level V: Two witnesses, each holding Level II status or higher, who
are not related to the pilot.

The approved witness for competitive requirements shall be either the
Contest Director of the Official Scorer.

Section 6 - PROCEDURES
The tasks required at all Levels must be performed with the following
restrictions: (a) all work done at Level I must commence after the voucher
is received; (b) requirements for the subsequent Levels may be achieved
any time after the previous Level form has been postmarked. However,
these said requirements will be nullified if the postmarked form sent is
returned due to errors or incompleteness; (c) a single performance may
be used for only one Level.

Section 7 - THERMAL DURATION FLIGHT
A thermal duration flight commences at the time of release from the end
of a towline. The distance from the extreme end of towline, at the winch,
hi-start hold-down, towman, vehicle, or towline return device to the
attach point at the model shall be no more than 300 meters (984.3 feet).
Tow men and vehicles shall be limited to a maximum of sixty (60) seconds
from launch to towline release. Towing by means of aircraft or other
airborne devices is expressly forbidden.

The flight shall be deemed a thermal duration flight if, in the opinion
of the pilot and the witnesses, the lift begin used to remain aloft is primarily
attributable to thermal activity. Termination must be a landing within
200 meters (656.2 feet) of the launch point, which is the point at which
the model first becomes airborne.

Section 8 - SLOPE DURATION FLIGHT
A slope duration flight commences with either a simple hand-launch or a
launch from the end of a towline, as defined in section 7.

The flight shall be deemed a slope duration flight if, in the opinion of the
pilot and witnesses, the lift being used to remain aloft is primarily
attributable to wave-action or winds blowing upslope on a ridge, hill, cliff,
wall, etc. Termination must be with a landing within 200 meters (656.2
feet) of the launch point.

Section 9 - PRECISION SPOT LANDING
A precision spot landing is accomplished by landing the sailplane so that
the extreme forward tip of the nose or forwardmost point of the longitu-
dinal centerline, at rest, is within the required distance from the center of
a designated spot on the ground. All precision spot landing flights must
commence with a launch meeting the specifications for towline lengths
and methods outlined in Section 7, except that the towline shall be not
less than 75 meters (246.1 feet) in length. The landing shall be voided if
the model jettisons or loses parts, comes to rest in an inverted position,
or touches any person or object while landing. However, contact with a
spot marker which does not noticeably impede the flight or landing of the
model is permissible.

Section 10 - GOAL AND RETURN FLIGHT
A goal and return flight is a thermal duration flight which commences with
a launch as specified in Section 7. After towline release, the sailplane
must be flown over the launch point and then to a pre-designated goal a
minimum straightline distance away, as specified in the Soaring
Accomplishments Program, Requirements Summary, Section 12, and
back to the launch point. Termination must be with a landing within 200
meters (656.2 feet) of the launch point.

Section 11 - COMPETITION
Competition requirements specified in the Soaring Accomplishments
Program, Requirements Summary, Section 12, may be fulfilled only in LSF
recognized contests which are defined to be those meeting the following
specifications:

A - Size
All contestants must compete at the same location on the same date.
(1) Level II - Five (5) or more participants
(2) Level III - Ten (10) or more participants
(3) Level IV - Fifteen (15) or more participants
(4) Level V - Twenty (20) or more participants

B - Rounds
Three or more separate opportunities to score

C - Events
Fifty percent (50%) or more of the contest events must adhere to at least
one of the following guidelines:

(1) Thermal Event Guideline - Extended thermal duration, distance, or
    speed; precision aerobatics, or altitude

(2) Slope Events Guideline - Duration, distance, speed, precision
    aerobatics, or altitude

Two alternative methods of scoring may be used to meet competition
requirements. Either the Place System, where a place is recognized to be
first (1st), second (2nd), or third (3rd) in the final standings of a contest;
or the Competition Points System, where a minimum total of competition
points from any six (6) contests may be used. Competition points are
computed by first dividing the participant's score by the winner's score
and multiplying by 100; then, multiplying the resultant value by one (1)
plus the number of lower standing contestants. A minimum of six (6)
contests must be flown no matter which scoring method is used.

Example: (a) Winner earns a score of 531.
             (b) Participant earns a score of 312.
             (c) Participant beats 5 other contestants.
             (d) Participant's Competition Points are"
                 312 / 531 * 100 * ( 1 + 5 ) = 352

D - FAI World Records
The establishing of a world record - recognized by the Federation
Aeronautique Internationale - shall constitute the requirements for a
contest win. However, six contests or records or a combination of six
contests and records must be recorded on all performance vouchers
from Level II through Level V. The 12,000 point requirement must also be
fulfilled for Level V.

Welcome to The League of Silent Flight!

Your letter has been received and you are officially listed as an
LSF Aspirant. You now may work toward membership by fulfilling
the requirements of Level I of the LSF Soaring Accomplishments
Program.

Enclosed is a copy of the League's Soaring Accomplishments Program.
A careful review of this document will help you understand more of
what the LSF is all about and how its program functions. You also
will find the flight requirements you must meet to earn membership
and how each must be performed and documented.

Membership is the LSF is not automatic. Every Aspirant has had to
earn it in the same manner as you will. That is why it is meaning-
ful, because it represents effort, skill, and achievement, not just
a receipt for dues.

Many sportsmen need several months to complete Level I. This, of
course, will vary with piloting skill, frequency of flying sessions,
and meteorological conditions. Each task is challenging and takes
practice, patience, and perserverance. The spot landing require-
ment may seem especially difficult; it has to most everyone. But
with determination and a bit of work, even beginning pilots soon
start to "zero-in" on the target.

The LSF Soaring Accomplishments Program is designed to prove your
capabilities and sharpen your skills. It will do just that. When
you complete Level I and become a Member of the League of Silent
Flight, you and the rest of the R/C soaring world will know that
here is a pilot.

Keep working and good luck.

				      See you on the field!

All correspondence to the LSF should include at least $1.25 in stamps
or coin for return postage.

Lamar and I called within about 20 minutes of each other. They are
trying to rehoat the database from a Vax in Chicago to an IBM 286
compatible in Indiana. They've been trying since December. He was nice
about it but the previous people got burnt out and they ARE all
volunteers. The phone number in .20 is his home number so take it easy
    on his family.

Current statistics are 7000 members with about 1800 considered active.
You don'ty actually go into the database until you meet the Level I
    criteria.
398.24official address of the LSFABACUS::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerThu Sep 26 1991 08:0418
I talked to Bob Steele this week, and the changes are complete. The
Winfield address is now only a forwarding address; the address given by
Kay last spring and repeated below is the official address of the LSF.
For details of the problem now cured, see page 32 of the 9/91 RCSD.

Phone during day or in the evening (219)485-1145

Bob Steele, the President, is retired, so he doesn't mind the phone
calls or the work load. [It amounts, surprisingly, to only two or
three letters per day.] But if you call, don't take out any
frustrations on Bob; the bind they got into could have happened to
anyone. They are now working on the backlog; be patient.

398.25letter of intent (extraction of Kay's old note)ABACUS::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerThu Sep 26 1991 08:2445
This is an edited extraction of Kay's note of 23-JUL-1990 about the
letter of intent that you send them to start things off.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------

> They now want me to fill out this little form, send them another $1.00
> and sign my "Declaration of Intent". ..........

I'm surprised they didn't just send you the voucher but as stated in the LSF
note and I'll restate here they do want you to make a "Declaration" and that
is the basis for sending the 1st voucher. For the benefit of others I will
copy their supplied sample in here.

> I'm not sure I'm going to bother at this point....

Jeff - Please do. We need everybody flying gliders to be a member.
This way you can qualify as a witness for others who are trying to
work there way up thru the ranks. Any problems the LSF has are indeed
our own since after you achieve level I you will be a voting member and
can run for office therefor we can change anything (such as the mail
response) that we don't like. I expect that one of their infrequent
news letters in the future will explain the delays. It is basically
a box office and a part time secretary who handles everything. A non-
profit, low key, non bureaucratic operation - which I think is what we
want. Once you are Level I you no longer need to wait for the next
voucher to arrive. You are allowed to get things signed off for the
next lever the day after the postmark on your previous voucher - or
something like that - it's in the rules. So make a copy of your blank
voucher before you start using it!

I'd like to encourage anyone flying gliders or thinking about flying gliders
to extract the paragraph below and send it along with $1.00 in U.S. stamps to:

criteria set forth in the Bylaws of the LEAGUE OF SILENT FLIGHT and give

398.26how many contests at a contest?ABACUS::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerThu Sep 26 1991 08:3613
I called Bob Steele, the LSF President, to ask the following question:

The tasks above level I require a number of "contests". If you enter
more than one event at the same place on the same day, is that one
"contest" or more than one? The answer was very non-bureaucratic,
"Whatever you deem appropriate." I regard that as, "More than one."

The point calculation scheme on the voucher implies more than one, and
the contest experience gained is properly "more than one." However,
the goal of encouraging contest attendance is thwarted, and the
non-discretionary exposure to varied flight conditions is lessened.

mailed my foarm in on friday the 18th and got it back in the mail

I don't know - in the past I have received some decals but I don't recall
getting anything for Level 1. Also in the past I have paid for some decals
and patches so I'm not sure where the pay ends and where the free bees begin.

I also had quick turn around getting my level 4 voucher.

Imagine that - level 4 - I'm excited. Sure is nice to start off with
a clean slate. But now I need two LSF level 2's for witnesses.

I got my last requirement(5 minute flight) for level I out of the way today. It
was pretty windy again today and I almost didn't go, but decided to at the last
minute. I'm glad I did! Kay and I were the only ones flying there(Ed Prentice
was playing chute shagger and Tom Deloren stopped by as we were packing up)
today and were using his highstart. I ended up launching into a thermal on my
last flight and had to zoom off in order to get off the tow line. As Kay says,
"it was awesome!" I made a few turns and was getting blown down wind(but still
climbing!) I decided before I got to far down wind I should check out my
penetration rate. It was okay, so I kind of "hovered" in one spot for a bit.
Well, that one spot was the right spot because I continued to climb. Kay kept
me informed of the time(thanks Kay) so I could just concentrate on flying. Once
he said, "5 minutes", I boogied back upwind and brought the Spirit in for a
6:21 flight. Level I complete!

I've had the form for some time, but hadn't done anything with it until a couple
of weeks ago. Now on to level II requirements, let's go for it Jim R!

Congrats on completing it. I'll keep the landing tape in the car so we
can get the landings out of the way before the ground gets too hard.
I'm hoping to get in a slope flight if we end up down the Cape.

I was just reading the back of the LSF voucher form and found out that you
only need two level 1's for a witness. Here's what the actual text says:

"The approved witness for non-competitive requirements shall be:

(a)Level I: One witness, over 21 years of age, who is not related to the
pilot, or one witness, holding Level I status or higher, who is not
   related to the pilot.
(b)Level II: Same as for Level I.
(c)Level III: Two witnesses, as in Level I
(d)Level IV: Same as for Level III
(e)Level V: Two witnesses, each holding Level II status or higher, who are
   not related to the pilot."

So you're all set Kay, we can still "witness" for you while you go for Level IV.

Lamar's words may be easily misread. Note that until you go for your
Level V, your witness need not be anyone involved with the LSF. Your
witness can be your fishing buddy.

If your witness is a youngster, he must be an LSF member, otherwise he
    can be anyone but family.

Not yet - only finished 1 each 1 hour thermal and the contest points.

Unless I'm mistaken, Level IV is a 4 hour slope flight. I know because I was
going for a 1 hour flight for Level III only to look it up and find it was a 2
hour flight. None of the planes I had with me had enough batteries except the
Ninja which was mid-aired after only 18 minutes.
