    	This sounds a pretty good quote - from memory, I think I am paying
    just over �1000 for my TZD turbo estate (lease began in Jan) and that
    was only a couple of quid higher than the previous one from 2 years
    ago. BTW, it;s a 1.7 engine in the turbo because they need the extra
    space around the cylinders and heads for the extra cooling required.
    
    	Out of interest, what is a "Meteor" BX??

You are almost correct while I was utterly wrong. The actual cc is 1769 (the
1.9 is actually 1905).

It's one of those special edition jobbies with alloy wheels, metallic paint & 
rally seats. This quote is pretty poor value as the difference in list price 
between the bog standard TGD Estate & the Meteor Estate is only 360 pounds so 
you would have paid the uplift 3x over by the end of the lease. I must say that 
I don't really understand this as the TGD lease cost is actually less than the 
standard car as even having a tow-bar added doesn't bring it up above the zero 
cost level. So the real incremental cost of the Meteor is 330 + cost of a tow 
bar.

    Has anyone else seen the latest 'Newsflash' at the front of Car Fleet
    VTX?  It says that no quotes received after yesterday (9th September)
    will be processed, and any orders have to be in by 19th September,
    after which "our system will be upgraded in line with the new policy
    and we will have 'enquiry only' access".
    
    Comment - yet again announcements/policy changes affecting the car
    scheme come out of the blue.  I don't know how long the message about
    these deadlines has been visible, but it can't have been long...
    
    Question - Does this mean that we can only order against the basket of
    quotes in future - i.e. no non-standard orders?  If so, this directly
    contradicts what I was told by Car Fleet?  If it is not the case, why
    impose the cut-off on quotations?
    
    As it happens, I got my quotation request (for a Peugeot 405 GTD Turbo
    estate) to Fleet in the nick of time.  I will post the figure in this
    Note when I get it.

    I actually spotted this note on VTX last Friday (pretty sure it 
    was not there before) which means that no notice of impending 
    change was given to anyone. It was one of the reasons I spoke to 
    Car Fleet to speed up the quotes/order in process
    
    However the disclaimer that has been on VTX since July-ish did 
    state that until the new system arrived any exceptions would be 
    treated as one-offs so I suppose the "system" has been followed to 
    the letter.

    I wonder how much all of this is costing? Not putting quotes quotes on
    VTX must cost a lot in processing additional quotes, where people would
    have taken quotes from VTX previously, and now not processing any more
    quotes, so people who have just become car-qualified will be driving
    around in lease cars costing upwards of �200 per week till the end of
    this month at least.

    Just out of interest, this is the Hertz cost.  PHH quoted �1952!  For
    half an hour this morning I thought I had done really well - I was told
    over the phone that the Hertz cost was �860.  However Fleet (no names,
    no pack drill...), being diligent, queried the large difference and
    then told me Hertz had made a mistake.
    
    Me?  Disappointed??!!

I was almost wrong. I've just had a delivery date of the 1st October so that's

    I am sitting pretty, since my car was delivered in August. So, I have a
    new car, which does not appear on the "Standard List", and if it did,
    would undoubtedly cost three times as much.
    
    This brings me to my point. I was rather under the impression that the
    new car scheme would save the company money in terms of administration.
    I was also led to believe that it would save the driver money,
    economies of scale arguements being used, among others. So, why does my
    previous car now cost #587 pounds, whereas it previously cost me #179
    for the same spec ? Why does a Cavalier SRi now cost #1,049 squids,
    whereas they used to be in the #600-#800 range ? I have the oddest
    feeling that my current car will be with me for a very long time !!

    Just let me explain the reason for my protest..........
    
    1) There are certain items in the processes of new car sheme which are 
    not mentioned in the communication (e.g. non-standard quotes not being
    publically available on VTX), which I have queried with Alastair
    Wright. Hopefully these will be sorted before the communication on
    the 27th.
    
    2) The Preferred Car List clearly states it is not the actual one.
    Therefore speculating about prices now may well be a waste of everyones
    time.

    ie a friends car scheme, they can go to a garage and say 'What deal can
    you do for me?'
    
    So based on the standard fleet purchasing price, they can get metallic
    paint etc as a freebie!

    I believe at one time you could let the leasing company know that a
    garage had the model you require to cut down waiting time, but as the
    car supplied has to match the quote exactly I would be most surprised
    that a garage could throw in any freebies as you suggest.

    Unfortunately Greg the scheme is not very flexible. The 'Preferred car
    list' prices are agreed costs between DEC and Hertz/PHH.
    
    The thing that will stop us finding a good deal is the fact that the
    lease companies do not want to talk to employees, they deal only with
    car fleet.
    
    As it will be a fixed price for the year, 
    the company will save money because the allowance will
    not have to be reviewed every 3 months as was necessary.
    
    The biggest hole that I can see in the new scheme is with the
    individual quotes that will be necessary if you want a car not on the
    list. You will have to submit a quote in the same way as the old scheme
    and will get a price based on the current lease costs. The problem is
    that its quite likely that that the lease costs will increase somewhat
    over the period of a year, so whilst a quote submitted shortly after
    the yearly review (July) should be quite reasonable, the same quote the
    following year just before the allowance is reviewed is likely to be
    comparitably expensive. This of course will not affect the company as
    the inflated prices will be passed directly on to employee. So in short
    it would appear that there would be no advantage in choosing a car from
    the list at the beginning of the fiscal year as an individual quote
    will be reasonable. However, at the end of the fiscal year forget about
    getting a quote as the cost will be prohibitably high and choose a car
    from the list.
    
    As the new scheme has not been made public yet, these comments are of
    course only conjecture. Hopefully this will be clarified.

    re:-1 Let me add a little further conjecture. On the ass-u-me-ption
    that the preferred list will be as expensive as it currently appears,
    relative to the scheme up to July '91, car fleet could actually cost
    the company more to run.
    
    People will look at the preferred list, say 'whoa', put in a couple
    of quotes, and then choose their car on the basis that at least a
    quote may be better than the preferred list. This could easily mean
    processing as many quotes as before, AND maintaining the so-called
    'preferred' list.
    
    This brings another question to mind. Who exactly prefers the
    'preferred' list ?? Not me on current information.
    
    DISCLAIMER - I have no particular axe to grind. I got a nice new car
    only 4,500 miles ago (i.e. 2 months). I have a feeling that, as long as
    it isn't nicked or damaged !, I shall be keeping it for some time !!
    
    The new system has the makings of a *great* car fleet system, and can
    save the company money, iff it is sufficiently attractive for people to
    use properly.

This is similiar to my friends scheme, I think. They have a fixed lease
and they can pay for extra's. 

However some very good deals have been done by garages anxious to get
some business!

    The only cost the garage knows is what the lease company is prepared to
    pay for a car. After all the lease company buys the car from the garage
    and with their tremendous buying power expect very good deals and
    consequently they deal only with a limited number of garages.
    
    Maybe your friends company buys their cars rather than leasing them
    as this would allow the flexibility you suggest.

    Well this morning in my in-tray is a very dapper letter about the
    scheme, saying the list will be on VTX soon (it isn't yet). So I am now
    going to un-hide .10, as it is now in the public domain.
    
    I have checked the wording, it is IDENTICAL. Only the car list is
    missing now, so treat the one in .10 as FYI only, and not a tablet of
    stone!

The main thing missing from the list is 0 rated cars...only 1 is there a 1.6L
cavalier...

They are all "fat" cars as well, no small cars in the list at all ! 

Well I for one, can't use the list...ah well, so much for making life easier...

OK, so I didn't understand that the <> meant negative.

I still don't consider any of the cars in the list "small" either in engine 
size or physical size.

    Jane, the list is a "preferred list". If the car you would like is not
    on it I believe quotes can still be submitted in the same way as
    before.

    Just looked at the preferred list.
    
    Over 1/3 of the cars on it cost over 2000 pounds! Is this really going
    to help a lot of the people out there decide on their cars without
    putting in quotes? Maybe I'm in the wrong function! 8-[
    
    There are only 4 cars under 200 pounds which have a 1.4 engine (three
    of which are Rovers!).
    
    Out of the people in my unit, I can see absolutely no-one who will be
    using this preferred list at all!

I see no reason why Fords should be imposed on us, (IMHO) cheap tacky 
overpriced cars at best, with the only alternatives a pug or a v.expensive
VW....

    are loads of Jaguar XJ6 3.2I 4DR saloons, Ford Scorpio 2.9I 24V 5DR

       Well I love the VTX preferred car list. The way it dynamically
       sets your workstation window through a variety of dimensions in
       rapid (or not so rapid) succession is very entertaining.

       Try going back a page when you're already on the first one.

       I find it hard to believe the list really contains the most popular
       cars of the last year. Why is there no Pug 205 1.9 GTi??  There are
       so many in the UVO car park, you have to remember your registration
       number.

I just looked on VTX for the preferred car list but it seems to have
gone again!

I could read the Guidelines however, and discovered that "The Fixed
Price scheme is not available to non-supplement holders."  Anybody care
to hazard a guess why this is?  It doesn't seem difficult to add the
amount of the supplement to the price shown to get a price for
non-supplement holders.

    I missed the first appearence on VTX, but now its back again.
    
    My initial thoughts are that prices on cars that I would be interested
    in are about �200 rather than �0 to a supplement holder on the old
    scheme.
    
    The choice of cars and in particular trims levels seem strange. Would
    it not be better to offer a wider choice cars at 0 driver cost by
    offering L's and GL's rather than GLX's Ghia's etc. at a higher cost?
    
    I would have been interested in a small estate when my car comes up for
    change, but not even the Escort estates are now offered on the new official
    list.

The car list seems to lack "cheap" cars! Maybe the this-is-not-a-pay-freeze
didn't affect Car Fleet personnel.

Personally, I'd have liked to have seen the "popular models" (ie Ford, GM,
Rover, Renault, Peugeot) listed with ALL available models. It seems
a little strange that you have to submit a quote request for a Rover 216SLi
yet a BMW, Saab, or Merc is available on the list.

Just think of all that money that'll have to be spent getting a new list made
up!

    there is a 214SLi.....

    You pay insurance if
    1) You can't afford the loss if the insured against event happens.
       (e.g. huge third party claims for damages)
    and
    2) The event is not likely to happen to you (e.g. your own car written
       off)
    
    I imagine that digital would have third party insurance even if it was
    not required by law. There is no need for comprehensive insurance as
    the cost of the inevitable incidents can be spread over the whole car
    fleet, and be less than the corresponding insurance.
    
    Noone would take out insurance against a puncture, because the risk
    doesn't satisfy the above criteria. I.e. punctures are likely to
    happen, and the cost of one is not going to break you. So the cost of
    insurance would be greater than the expected loss.

    No, All I received was the full letter. The list was not included.

    In the next few months I have to decide which car I want to drive 
    for the next 3 years. I looked at the preferred list and there just
    wasn't much that interested me.
                                              
    I don't want a car that's bigger than a 1.4 for tax reasons - why pay
    a lot more for little extra. 

    There's also a lot of new cars coming out which won't be on the list
    because they're not popular - yet.

    I need to do some more investigation and arrange some test drives
    but the two new cars I'm thinking about at the moment are:

      o  Peugeot 105 XSi
      
      o  Citroen AX GTi

    Both share the same 100BHP engine (<1.4) with insurance group 5 and
    have a list price of 10,000 - a couple of hundred pounds more than the
    1.4 Fiesta Ghia (which is by far the cheapest car on the the preferred 
    list). 
    
    Both cars have had impressive write-ups from a number of car
    magazines. If fact they're wondering why anyone would want to buy a 
    205 GTi (1.6) when the 105 XSi is so much better - and costs so much
    less.
      
    When I get them I'll put the quote(s) in here, but if anyone else is
    also thinking along the same lines I'd be interested in hearing about
    it.

    your are. I think the three categories are: Supplement Holder,
    Non-supplement Qualified User, and Non-supplement non-qualified User.
    
    It is not clear ot me that quotes are the same across those three

    Saw both the 106XSI and the AX GTI on Sat at Motorfair and out of the
    two without driving them my vote would go for the 106. Looks and feels
    a lot better made than the AX and isn't nearly as ugly. The 106 has as
    much room inside as the 205, the only bits that are smaller are the
    bonnet and the boot.

    cancelled, prior to delivery. FLEET will not process a quote for me 
    until the new year as all the leases have been extended. I'd appreciate

    calculated by fleet yet due to extending the lease, but was expected to
    be about 1,600 - 1,700, fleet still waiting for lease Co to come up
    with a new price for 36 months.

has been extened to April. My original price was 1750 pounds, I was stretched to 
limit on that and just wonder what the new cost will be.

    Just got a quote back Honda CRX Vtec  at 1560ish for a supplement holder,
    thats about 50% up on the last two quotes I've tried for the same car.
    The first cancelled because of the VAT increase the second because of
    the car scheme re-vamp. 
    
    WHAT A RIP OFF... this is more expensive than a local Honda dealer
    quoted for a one off lease.
    
    If quotes like this keep up I can see me keeping my current car until
    they come and take it off me...

    Surely the lease price should should come down, as usual Digital gets

    Several people have commented on why the lease cost hasn't gone down

    The lease costs have gone down but so has the allowance.
    Therefore the 'driver' price is more or less the same.
    
    Digital is making a saving here, but we are not.

By most schools of logic, the amount should have gone up for the longer period 
not down...

    Note .98 was not very clear. The allowance I mentioned was the annual
    allowance.

    The annual cost of leasing a car is cheaper if the contract if over a
    longer period of time. This is the reason the company has extended the
    lease from 30 months to 36 months.

    2� years at �3600 = �9000

    3  years at �3400 = �10200

    Your school of logic is of course correct. The cost for the total lease
    period has gone up, but the annual cost has gone down.

    The idea of this was to save the company money. Theoretically, the
    annaul driver prices should not be affected by this. What is inflating
    the driver price for performance cars is the new insurance loading.

    THe �200 minimum insurance loading must be included in the current
    allowance as the Cavalier 1.6L in the preferred car has a Zero annual

quotes.

They just add extra for the higher insurance brackets.


BTW  This is the biggest rip-off of all.   I've yet to see a normal-non-hot 
hatchback etc as expensive insurance-wise as a 1.6 cavalier...

I see no reason why they couldn't have included a bracket lower than a 1.6

    Just for interests sake I got a private quote for a CRX Vtec from my
    next door neighbor who works for a leasing company in Liverpool. The
    quote he got me undercut our leasing quote by about 800 pounds per
    year. Even in you take our insurance into account we are still being
    RIPPED OFF. Further more he said that a complany with volume such as
    ours could expect another 10 percent or so off. 
    
    Ringing up car fleet (many times because they NEVER reply to messages)
    got the standard "Nothing to do with us, thats what were given" when I
    told them our quote was too high. I would have thought that the job of
    Car Fleet was to get the best deals saveing us and the company money,
    not let the leasing companies walk all over us......

    present is that the bottom has dropped out of the used car market,
    making our leasing companies project low residual values.
    
    The issue is being checked out both from the perspective of our deal
    with the leasing companies, and to ensure employees will not be

    p.s. As an aside, many companies are now using schemes that will only
    take used cars into their fleets. They pick up 1-year old cars from
    auction, lease them in the usual way, but are making a tremendous

I'm sorry, but I don't accept this argument. The reason we use lease companies
is to insulate us (either as individuals, or as a company) from possible
losses on used cars. We're in the computer business, not cars...

If the lease companies guessed wrong, and the bottom has fallen out of their
residuals then tough�. They cannot expect to make their profits up by
over-charging on new leases.

We should get other quotes from other lease companies, and if Hertz/PHH
can't match them, then we should stop using them.

They have made enough profit out of us in other years. Let them earn
their money now. They are supposed to be the experts, after all.

�the fact that the bottom has fallen out of the UK car market is mainly
due to the large fleet/leasing companies is quite ironic...

    I met socially today with one of the managers of our leasing scheme (ie the
    leasing end). Whilst we leant on the bar, not discussing Digital, he told 
    me the leasing companies completely underestimated the crash in residuals
    this year, hence the rise in prices. He said their net profit contribution
    has not increased at all.
    
    He's a straight guy, who I know well enough for him to tell me his

The R19 16V quote with metalluc paint as the only option came back
today at 850ish, a quote that six months ago was 550ish. Very disapointing....

Hillary Baily at car fleet has been very helpful with my CRX quote, the first 
person that I have ever known from that group showing any initiative. PHH and
HERTZ got an on the road price of 14200ish pounds which cost me 1550ish on the 
scheme. I could get the price to 14000 at the local dealer without trying so 
Hillary got back in touch with the lease companies who re-negotiated to 13800. 
This has saved a bit but it is still out of my range, a shame as before the 
budget I had the same car on order for 1026....life is a bitch..

The car scheme has been revised for the worse. When it was shut down we 
were told that when it came back it would be more competitive. What
has actually happened is the company has taken the any saving by dropping the 
allowance by 200 pa and extending the lease period, thus taking any 
savings itself. All this in a year when theres been a virtual pay freeze. Nice
one Digital. Come to think of it this is a pay cut as the car benifit
has dropped in terms of car age and the cost to the employee...
  
Perhaps if the allowance had stayed at 3400 than both parties would have 
benifited...now that does sound like a sensible idea.

    The quotes I've seen recently (in this conference) seem to be
    expensive. I would think as time progresses they will become more
    expensive still until the car allowance (supplement) is increased
    again. As the company has provided the preferred list which will not
    get revised until July, I doubt that the allowance will be reviewed
    until then.

    Lease costs will increase all the time so individual quotes will be priced
    accordingly whereas the fixed list will remain the same.

    I think the people in the best position are those with leases that
    expire around july/august so that individual quotes will benefit from
    the recently revised allowance.

    Maybe the answer is to take over a car with 8 or 9 months lease left
    so that it expires at that time (you will also get the new reg :-) ).

that seems a lot of money for what is a comparitively cheap car.

However double check, as a colleague of mine recently ordered a BX 19 TGD,
and a few options to bring it up to the standard driver cost.

She was told by fleet it would cost her about �450 a year, made up
of �200 (approx) for the base car, and �250 (approx) for the options she
ordered.

She had to point out to them that the car is priced at MINUS �200 on the
preferred car list.... then they got the right price.

Hmm, let me see, 3 x 3400 + 3 x 262 = 10,986.

List price is about 9,500, with say 700 quid for the ABS, 200 for the paint, 
200 for the alarm. Total of approx 10,400. At list price. So the leasing
company pay about 9,000 for the car, charge us 11,000 to drive it, and
keep the car at the end of the three years. Maybe we are in the wrong
business?

    Well I just received a verbal confirmation via car fleet/leasing
    company on the two Peugeot 106 quotes I asked for. If you remember
    I'd also asked for the Citroen AX GTi (which I asked to be rechecked)
    and still came out at a 250+ driver cost for a supplement holder.

    106 XSi with all extra's except ABS = zero driver cost

    106 XSi with anything (ABS etc) = zero driver cost.

    As the 106 is a much better (in my opinion) and more expensive car, 
    guess which one I'm going to choose....... its a 1.4 as well so 
    the tax position is good.

    The 24 months of .-2 is probably because of (expected) high milages.
    
    As I understand if the lease is for 60,000 miles or 36 months - which
    ever is sooner. So if you expect to cover 30,000 miles a year then the

    which has a list price of �17,074 v �15,449 for the MX-3 (1.8L Manual).

    power kit etc. �915.  Not bad I thought..... But I could really do with
    more boot space. So I put a quote in for a Frontera 5 door. This I
    priced at about �1500 more than the Sport, on the road cost.
    
    I have received the quote.......... �3001....YES, �3001.
    
    This �15000 car came back with a quote which puts it in the same
    price/insurance bracket as a BMW 520I.
    
    I rang CAR FLEET, but could not get a satisfactory explanation for

    The Frontera is Insurance group 5, in the What Car Magazine, which is
    what they base the insurance cost on.

    resubmitting this quote,  but I aint giving in, I will pay a realistic

    	the unsatisfactory answer that you said you received was because
    	they simply made it up. The car does about 83 MPH flat out
    	accelerates to 60 in about 16 seconds, a lot of the mechanicals
    	are not specific to the Frontera.  Taking all these facts into
    	consideration why inded is it so expensive.
    
    	Over the 3 year lease, they would (phh,hertz) be recieving about
    	2-3 grand more than the car costs to buy !!!

Maybe PHH/Hertz/Car Fleet make the asumption that, if you buy a big 4x4, 
you're going to be driving it off-road (Nah ! Surely not...;-), so the residual
value for a 3-year-old vehicle which has gone up and down a few mountains
will be substantially less than one which has stayed on the black-stuff.

Or maybe they make the assumption that the second-hand-car-buying public
will feel that way.

Or maybe they assume that it's going to cost a lot more in repairs and 
maintenance, because of its more rugged lifestyle ?

Why there should be that much difference between the 3- and 5-door, I'm not
sure, unless they feel that *seriously* rugged drivers wouldn't bother with the
mere 3-door ?

I want to know why they quote the fuel mileage for a constant 75mph
in 4WD....doesn't seem something you'd want to do very often......;-)

    Hi... I recieved a couple of quotes for the frontera .The 2.0l sport
    with alloy wheels,electrics,front nudge bars, and metallic paint came
    in at #928.00. The diesel turbo with the same options came in at
    2002.00. this was before the budget,and so (hopefullly)should be
    cheaper now.
       Their is a small problem at the factory concerning the sport's
    reardoor seals,and according to phh,they have not yet recieved any
    delivery dates.

    Stuff the preferred car list. The Sunny list price is more than the

Salesman I know put in for one. Will try and get it off him..........

    Saw what proclaimed itself to be a Corrado G60 Supercharged
    yesterday...at least that is what it said on the tailgate. There was no
    "G60" bit on the front grill, but maybe that is only on the Golf.

    It would appear that the idea of the preferred list has back fired this
    year as lease actually seem to of gone down rather than up.
    
    It would be a different story if individual quotes were costing "over
    the top" in which case the preferred list would be useful.
    
    If this trend continues then the actual car allowance may well drop to
    bring it back in line with the base lease cost of a cavalier 1.6L or
    whatever is used as a benchmark. In which case gets your quotes in
    before July. A bargain is sure to be had !

	I ordered the Nissan (who wouldn't at that price!) A couple of days 
later I get a photocopied sheet telling me that the proce is now 781 pounds.
(they had forgot to add the insurance, but the other quote the clio it was added)

This was after I got fleet to check the Nissan quote on two different occasions.
In addition the its does add up. Original price was 369 plus the insurance (400)
giving 769 as a total So why 781.......something fishy??


The moral of this sad tale is now matter how many times you check the quote, is 
only found to be too cheap when you order it...&}

    At present I am waiting on a Quote from Fleet for the new Honda Prelude
    2.0i. However they have told me that they cannot provide a quote as
    they do not know which Insurance Bracket the car falls in to. I would
    have thought it a simple procedure, to check which Insurance group the
    car was in, either by phoning Insurance or the Honda dealers, however
    I'm told it's not that simple. Fleet must take their Insurance group
    from "WHAT CAR" magazine, and refuse to take it from any other source,
    the result of this is that the Insurance group is not in this months,
    or next months, so I will have to wait at least until June for a quote
    on this Car. Seems "CRAZY" to me, but I'm just a name and a number to
    them - Why should they worry.
    The car is priced similarly to the Honda Accord 2.0i manual, so I was
    wondering if anyone has received a quote for that model since the
    Budget, just to give me an idea of the price.

Call "WHAT CAR?" on 081-943-5637. Ask for KIM CLEARY - She is responsible for 
editorial data. Explain your predicament, she will probably be able to find
the insurance group for the Prelude. Take care, however, she will almost
certainly give you the new "ABI" rating - this is not acceptable to fleet
admin. Try to get the old rating if possible.
Forward the information to fleet admin - stating the source as "WHAT CAR?,
I'm sure you'll find they will be co-operative.

Yeh, the new car scheme seems to be increasing admin and car
rental costs rather than reduce them. It'll be interesting to see 
whether they reassess the car scheme in july and change the 
format once again.

I reckon they will keep it the way it is. The only way it was bad this
year was the sudden drop in car prices. If prices had gone up, the
preferred list would have been very good.

    Realistically... the only way there will be changes in the car scheme,
    is if they can see a better way of working.  Being a cynic, I can
    certainly suggest different ways this could be done, but firmly believe
    that threr will very little difference in the pricing of cars after the
    summer review. (Which I find to be a pain as I have to replace in
    November, and there for order in September... and if the revised prices
    take as long as last time, I will be in the unfortunate position of
    waiting for the new fixed prices, and of quoting for what I really
    want!)

    The quote was put in by one of the engineers in my office.
    It is for a basic 190 E. The only option quoted for (so that he didnt
    get the "preffered car list price") was for a larger fuel tank !,
    the cheapest option available.
    And yes it is 900 pounds.

    I spoke to car fleet the other day and enquired about ordering a car
    from someone else's quote number (just like the good old days) but she
    said that the quotes were 'personal' and that if I wanted the exact
    same car I would have to put my own quote in. This sounds like
    mega-overheads, because the other guy's quote is still valid for a
    month, yet I can't order from that - I have to duplicate the whole
    process !!!!!!!!
    
    By the way, one of the chaps here has just ordered a Rover 220 GTi for

    The Merc quote was apparently minus the insurance !! But as the 
    delivery date has been confirmed Car fleet have decided the quote
    stands. I've seen the All-in-One with my own eyes and judgeing by the
    Mailing list there is quite a few happy expectant Car owners around.

    My Guess what'll probably happen this summer is that they will ask 
    PHH/Hertz for a quote on a 1.6L Cavalier. They will then recaluclate the 
    supplement so that the Cavalier goes on the list for �0. 
    
    So if the relative difference between your chosen car and a 1.6L hasnt
    changed over the year then the price on the new list SHOULD be roughly
    the same.  Of course if the difference has increased!......

    that the car should not be delivered until Aug 1st. There should be no
    probs. Remember, I ordered my RS from an existing quote (old scheme)
    in December '90 and specified that the car should not be delivered

Similiar situation as me, and the same car!!

VTX says:

You may commence the renewal procedure no more than three months in advance
of your termination date.

But I wonder who would check this? I'm going to submit my quotes 1st
June, for a car due October, and see what happens.

The letter from Alastair Wright states:

"Quotations will be valid for 30 days. Orders placed will be subject to
re-quote if the time between order and delivery exceeds five months"

The only "but" is what happens if they increase the supplement levels in July?

    lease costs; remember the classic mistakes; like the BMW 3-series
    convertible, that was quoted by Hertz as a standard saloon; about
    10 people ordered off that quote, and it must have cost Hertz a

    Car Fleet have started to check expiry dates of existing lease vehicles
    as quotes are submitted.
    
    I put a quote in due to somebody taking over my car (special
    circumstances) and they bounced the quote because it was 6 months
    before the expiry date. It was highlighted on the returned quotes that
    I must re submit in 3 months.
    
    i.e You cannot start the order process at more than 3 months out.
    
    i.e 1 - 2 weeks to get quotes in and prices back and then 2 1/2 months
    until delivery.. Unless you are having something really exotic...!!!

    Three-door TDi Discovery with 7-seat option, roof rack and tow bar/twin
    electrics is �2262.

I've never had the opportunity to have a company car on the lease scheme
and as such do not know about it's workings, however seeing as leasing is
basically another way of saying vehicle finance can you ask for a quote for
a nearly new car, i.e. less than a year old with lots of manufacturer's
warranty still left.

Has anybody suggested this or possibly done it?

I can see one large obstacle. I assume Hertz/PHH get huge discounts on new
cars which don't get passed on to the driver. It is possible that this
discount is large enough so that the new car costs the leasing company
about the same as a nearly new car to a private buyer. So why should they
finance a car with a visible price and visible profits when they can rake
it in with the existing arrangement.

I would have done this if it were possible.

Under the Digital lease scheme, you get a quote for a certain model of
car plus any extras.  You can't specify a specific garage or car so it
is impossible to get a quote for anything other than a brand new car.

    The last company I worked for leased from Hertz. I could (& did) have
    any car up to x pounds per month -- including any resales Hertz had in
    stock. Meant I took a 2-year old very pleasant motorcar for the cost
    of a new Cavalier.
    
    Now a few years back, but a personal contact in another lease company

    That's after I was quoted 340, which was after Car Fleet even remembered
    that I had submitted a quote (after six weeks and several phone calls -
    none of which were returned), and the PHH quote had been returned because
    they hadn't sent it correctly, so I could wait for the whole process to
    start again, or accept the Hertz quote. I never even received a quote -
    except via the phone when eventually someone bothered to answer and I
    got through to the right person.
    
    Then I was quoted a delivery date of 1-MAY-1992 which turned out to be crap
    cos apparently DFMS is broken and sends out delivery confirmations for the
    1st day of the next month. Hoskyns can possibly take some of the blame
    here (DFMS is written and supported by Hoskyns).
    
    I don't wish to cause offence (or maybe I do), but if I was an external
    customer of Digital's car fleet system (not that there are any, or are
    likely to be because of the awful service) I would have told them where to
    go a long while back. What a bunch of amateurs ! While the company is
    going through tough times, why don't they get rid of some more dead
    wood - by getting rid of car-fleet !

The similarity was because I asked for a "Wentworth", but the request was
mistyped into the EDI system. I assume (everyone knows what ass-u-me means) that 
as the "Wentworth" and standard car are the same list, the quote should be 
similar. 

I need automatic and ABS and aircon, anyone know ANY other car that has been 
quoted to anyone (fiat 128 upwards!). Seriously, the auto's seem to mean
A: Forget the decent performers
B: If AUTO+aircon forget ABS
C: If AUTO+aircon+ABS see taxman about new "benefits in kind scale" 

So far I have a chance (if I can get another quote!!!) on the Volvo, if I drop 
some options.

    There's a quote on VTX for �1774 + �240 for Auto. ABS is standard and
    air con is usually quoted as a c. �800 - �1000 option by dealers (it
    may be available as a factory option now, actually).
    
    Looks quite competitive, but it's obviously a totally different type
    of car (but roomier than a Fiat 128! :^)).
    
    List price would be under the top tax bracket price.

thanks, I have had a go at asking Vauxhall (Newbury) about the Carlton.

On a sliding scale of disinterest down to absolute rudeness, their man is off
the scale. Sounds interesting though, the price is o.k., I'll have to jump out

    Be aware, the cost of the car declared to the taxman should be the
    purchase price, NOT the list price. So, with PHH discounts, they could
    well be below the 19,250. I know this because an acquaintance (i.e.
    will remain nameless) has just purchased a 940 Turbo Estate. List was
    around 22K, discount took it to 19K. A separate invoice for the
    'extras' could fix any problem, not that he'd do this ;-)
    
    Mind you, looking at your prices, they already include discount. And
    PHH do not appear to be the best at bargaining !!

Is it possible to get Car Fleet to actually question the lease company as
to how they arrive at these figures? It seems that car fleet will just pass
on a price regardless of whether it seems high or not. Surely it should
be the job of car fleet to find the best price for the driver.

    Hertz and PHH have a contract to supply all Digital vehicles. All Fleet
    do is run the process of submitting to those two suppliers and then
    passing on to the driver either the lowest of two quotes, the one
    that's returned if either supplier declines to quote, no quote if
    neither will quote, or 1 or two rejections if either/both can't quote.
    
    They can't exactly be accused of negotiating the lowest price for the
    driver, can they?
    
    What it must be to have a captive audience/market! I'd like to know on
    what basis these two suppliers won the contract. I don't think that
    I've seen any kind of management from them in the last 13 yrs except an
    annual tax disc arriving in the post (and even then Fleet does the hard
    work of internal distribution).......

    I'm surprised that there is such a difference in lease cost between the
    Sunny GTi (�800ish) and the RS2000 (�1600).
    
    The RS is a bit more expensive to buy, but usually lease deals on Fords
    are a lot better than Japanese cars so I'd expect the lease costs to be

    cars cheaper on running costs than Jap cars, seems a bit odd

    The 100NX (SX?) is a totally different beast than the Sunny GTi.
    
    The Sunny has a 2.0 16v engine and the 100 has a 1600cc engine 
    (if I remember correctly).
    
    The 100 is a pretentious modern looking car (ugly IMO) the Sunny GTi
    is a beefed version of the base Sunny model.
    
    Sorry, don't now of any dealers that have this in stock.
    
    Why not check out one of the many local "motor shows". A Nissan dealer
    is bound to be there.

    	Thanks for the difference on the Sunny and 100NX (yes it is weird
    isn't it?). I believe that someone has been quoted about 800 squid for
    a Sunny. Also believe it is a 'white knuckle ride' also did you know
    that the price of a Nissan 200SX exec i.e air con, stacking CD, and
    alloys has been reduced by #3000 as part of the Nissan v Nissan UK
    squabble. The price is now 16,783 which is cheaper than Rover 420GSi
    Sport !!!!

    Nissan GTI has come in at around 880 for the lease.

    Having read through this and other notes relating to quotes under the
    new scheme, it seems the done thing these days when considering
    leasing a car that appears on the preferred list, is to pop in a quote
    request asking for (usually) trivial options with the common outcome
    that the returned quote is less than the preferred list price.
    
    Doesn't this undermine the whole validity of the preferred list ?  The
    workload on Fleet is not going to be reduced much if scores of people
    are putting in quotes for 1.6 GL's with the optional parcel shelf
    nodding dog :-) in order to shave (often) hundreds off the list price.
    
    My thinking is that the preferred list entry for a car, whose price is
    significantly higher than a recent quote for a higher specification
    model, should be reassessed as soon as possible and the date of
    reassessment published.
    
    Then we could all have a little more faith in the list

As has been said here before, the fixed price list is fixed for 12 months.
Usually, this would mean that a car at the end of the year would be
cheaper on the list than by submitting a separate quote. Because of
this years halving of company car tax and the recession forcing manufacturers
to reduce prices, the opposite has happened.

    Shaz, don't pay too much attention to 50-70 times for 16v cars.
    They will not compare to turbo's. As mentioned in a note from yonks
    ago, these times are for acceleration in top gear. The power band in a
    16v engine is 4000+ revs, you would need to be in a lower gear to
    achieve the best figures.

    I have been speaking to a Honda dealer in the past week and he has
    informed me that by the end of the year the new CRX will be available,
    in a model with a full electric convertible roof. The roof will fold
    into the boot automatically and clip into place, so you can have a
    convertible at the touch of a button. Sounds like some machine, he
    believes it will retail at approx. #17,500. 
    
    He told me the new CRX also has an extra 10BHP. (all it needs is a set
    of wings, then it'd be up-up-and-away).

    M-technic sports suspension. came back for �1700 ish

    Frontera Sport, with power pack, front nudge bar, front fog lamps,

    I was a bit disappointed with both. The BMW 316i Touring (old 300
    series shape) has a cheaper list price than the new model 316i saloon,
    which is �1350 on the preferred car list. I don't seem to have gained
    much from the decrease in car tax, or perhaps it's just that BMW list
    prices have gone up a lot since the preferred list was calculated last
    year. I'm submitting another quote without radio and dog guard to see
    if I can get the price down to something I can afford.
    
    With the Frontera, I had done some calculations based on other quotes
    posted here, and had expected a lower price because I requested less
    expensive extras (ie. no alloy wheels or tow bar).

        For any one who is looking for a high(ish) performance saloon at 
    a resonable cost, I suggest you give this a try....1.6 ltr 16v engine
    producing 160bhp. This is quicker than my GSi2000 cavalier!
       It comes as standard with electric windows/sunroof, and abs and a 
    good size boot.
      Will I be ordering one ? ........NO.. Why dont the Japs make cars that
    anyone who is above average height can drive, without having to either 
    have expensive mods to the drivers seat position, or drive hunched up
    over the steering wheel...(by the way I'm 6'4" tall).

    I ordered a Nissan about March this year 1.6 LSX Primera 272 quid only
    to be told 3 weeks that it was due they had rejected the order (which
    was on the pref car list) because Nissan had changed the lettering to
    a SLX. I then quoted for a 1.6 SLX price 340 quid (this was after the
    budget reduction) no extras.
    
    Now I see the Nissan Primera "2.0" SLX is on the preferred car list for
    only 279 quid..   AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!

    The BX 1.9 TGD looks rather expensive at around 200 quid on the new
    list. This used to come in at no extra cost, mind you the ZX 1.9D is
    cheap enogh to have metalic paint and it still   not cost you anything.

    The Renaul t19 is very interesting. Last year on the preferred list it
    was approx 800 pounds when the list price was 13,224. Now it's approx
    600 pounds with a list price of 13175.
    
    This is in a time when insurance costs have gone up! Either someone
    screwed up badly last year or DIGITAL got a great deal this year! (or
    it's a typo and the Renault 19 is more expensive :^(

    I have had what I think is an excellent quote an a Nissan Primera
    2.0eGT. It is a special model (limited supply I believe) with air
    conditioning, leather seats and a CD player. The cost is �1582. My
    order has gone in!

    ref .320. The quote number for the Nissan Primera 2.0eGT is 012087,
    24months/60,000 miles, expires 5 August 1992.

    The only option on a Diabalo is a �some-designer-or-other� clock, this
    comes in at over �10,000 - approx. 25% take this up.

Update on Renault Clio - see 277.

I ordered the standard one with no extras and was given expected dely. of 9/8/92. 
Have chased today and the garage asked if I knew that the spec had been changed.

The good news is the spec on mine will now include tilt & slide electric sunroof
(previously it was only a manual tilt).  Also electric front window with one 
action button.  Also they are changing the trim but I'm not sure whether that's 
the interior or exterior.

The bad news is it'll be manufactured in France in September - but then I'd 
rather have the extras.

I wonder whether the Clio price will be increasing again in the near future?

No thanks!  I pay for my lease out of my own hard earned dosh so I want
it to be as low as possible.  Sometimes it seems as though I'm the only
person in this company that doesn't get their car paid for... :-(

By the way, I believe the magic number is �3,995 as that's what Fleet
just told me.  So for me, a car which has a zero cost on the preferred
car list would cost 
�3,995 out of my pre-tax salary.

	Yup, and if you are an 8 or above, Digital give you the 3995 IF YOU
	LEASE THE CAR, if you decide not to lease, and have the cash and do 
	your own deal, they give you 3,000.............

	Of course, most people are only taxed on 2775 of that 3995 so you have 
	1,220 tax-free, if you take the 3,000 you are taxed on all of it.

    In terms of off-road ability, the Brands Hatch 4-wheel drive training 
    centre rate the Frontera very poorly... "got stuck crossing a flat
    field" was a quote from one instructor. (Incidentally the centre use
    Suzuki Samurai's for their courses... I was amazed where these vehicles
    could go... even with the likes of me driving! It would appear the
    Suzuki's get slagged off 'cos they can't go round roundabouts over
    50mph, but put them in the environment they were originally designed
    for and they're 'kin brilliant!)

    Funny. I never thought these Japanese jeeps were intended for taking

    I think they may have been designed with off-road use in mind, but
    are definitely sold with town use.
    
    They are extremely good off-road in trials type of conditions, as
    what they lack in power they more than make up for in light weight
    and short/narrow wheelbase/track.  I still don't want one...
    
    On-road they are abysmal.  Not so much for the reported danger in
    tipping over (exaggerated in the US, but with some truth in it), but
    because the springs are far too hard (also ineffective off-road).
    The design of the leaf springs is also wrong (to general thinking) in
    that they do not have any camber in their normal rest position.  When
    placed under load, the springs move from straight to bent position,
    which means that the shackles then have to move much more than they
    would if the spring started in a bent position, went through the
    level position and then bent again.  Apparently, the shackles on
    the Cheep do not have enough movement to allow for full travel of
    the leaf springs.  It seems that if a Cheep owner purchased a decent
    set of aftermarket springs to increase vehicle height and improve the
    wheel travel, the ride comfort is improved noticeably (as the springs
    are softer), AND the vehicle becomes more stable both on- and off- 
    road, even though the centre of gravity.  All from what I have read.

    Not really Cavalier mechanicals, but I think the petrol engine is.
    
    I have read reports which comment that it does have quite good (or
    is that 'fair') off-road ability.  It all depends on what you want,
    or what you compare it with.
    
    If you compare it with a coil-sprung Rover product, then it will
    surely lose hands-down.  Then take both vehicles over the sort of
    terrain that owners may use it on, I guess that there would be no
    winner (or maybe the GM product if you include creature-comforts).
    
    I suppose the vehicles with which to compare it should really be
    of Japanese origins - Land Cruiser / Trooper / FourTrak / Sportrak
    All of these can be 'beaten' by a Land Rover/Range Rover/Discovery,
    but I wouldn't say that any of them are *bad* off-road.

    I have a Suzuki Heep. It is eight years old, and for 1000cc engine in a
    4wd vehicle goes like a train.
    
    It hasn't ever fallen over on a corner, despite being always driven
    with either the accelerator or the brake flat to the floor.
    
    It's also traversed the Ridgeway from end to end (on a weekday several
    years ago), with three "Digit"s on board and got stuck just the once on
    some enormous ruts left by one of those big wheel tractors.
    
    It's also been incredibly cheap to run. Depreciation and running costs
    are currntly about �800 per year including Tax & Insurance.
    
    It's not good for long distances having an uncomfortable (bouncy) ride.
    It also can't tow the skin off a rice pudding in snow.
    
    It's now going rusty and I guess it'll only last another year or two.
    
    I shal miss it when it goes and my ten-year old son will be
    heartbroken.

    Doubtful that an Alfa 75 would be available on the lease unless
    the dealers still have them in stock as new cars. They have all 
    been making room for the 155. A 75 is the one I want so a private
    purchase may be the answer.
    
    I'm not all that keen on the 155 as yet. Given time and I will
    start to like it I suppose. I just don't like FIATS involvement
    with ALFA thats all. Given their freedom ALFA are extremely
    creative, SZ and the Proteo are examples. FIAT canned the Proteo
    despute the fact that it was a more viable production car then
    the SZ.!
    
    I am thinking a few months ahead at the moment anyway but I do
    like the Frontera 3 door model.

    Steve, I've been thinking about this. It might worth putting a quote in
    for the ADVANTAGE TD rather than the AURA. Its several hundred pounds

	3,400 plus VAT towards a car - usually because you are what used to be 
	known as a "qualified car user" - then you will get 3,400 cash, taxed

    The way I see it is that Fleet simply send us the best of the two
    quotes with the attitude of take it or leave it. Digital offer us a
    reasonable car as standard (Cav 1.6L) but we can choose any car we like
    if we want to pay the extra.
    
    The secret is to recognise a good quote when you see it and go for it.
    Timing is important as well (or it used to be) as the allowance
    increases from time to time making the quotes lower for a period.
    
    It could be that Barrie is unfortunate and that the lease cost for the
    Clio has gone up slightly since the last quote for this model was
    submitted. Its definately worth following up though.

    Maybe it is the best of the 2 quotes but why do they differ so much,
    surely Hertz and P.H.H. dont change the leases costs of their cars
    every week, take for instance the trouble i've had with carfleet trying
    to quote/order a new car.
    
    I ordered the 19 16V from the preffered list, with options #915.
    Then i recieved the standard mail telling me the quoted price was #857,
    so i phoned carfleet and asked is the car being ordered or do i have to
    submit an order form, after all it was an order i put and not a
    quotation, they said the car has been ordered and i will be paying #857.
    Then they realised that the price for metallic paint had been left
    off, so they were going to cancel my order, requote for the car, and
    this time add the cost of metallic paint. My question was why couldn't
    they just add the price of metallic paint to the price and leave the
    order in, but they couldn't do that , they had to requote, wasting
    time, effort, and money, as my cars mileage is still climbing over the
    60,000 mark.
    The idea of fleet quoting every time an order is placed is to get fleet
    the best price, but what about us ?, why have the preffered list if
    they are going to requote for every order ?,and if they get a good deal
    is that price passed on to us, i bet it would be if the price went up
    above that on the prefered list. So where do these numbers come from,
    are fleet making money out of us, i bet the price we are given is not
    the Hertz/P.H.H. price plus the insurance element, i expect there is a
    little bit of pocket money for carfleet there somewhere.
    Anyway my quote has come back again, and this time it has the added price
    of metallic paint, back up to #915 again, it was ordered on Monday so
    now i'll have to wait for an e.t.a. again.
    
    After all that if its true about fleet paying 20p per mile over 60,000
    why the hell are they quibbling over 50 quid for metallic paint when my
    car has done 86,000 miles at the moment and its still going up, it will
    cost them a fortune, i would have thought that they would be pleased to
    see the back of it and save themselves some money.

    What I still don't under stand is why....
    
    	when I place an order for and Audi 80 no extras... form the
    preferred car list, they tell me 4 weeks later that the oreder has now
    been placed, but they cannot tell me a delivery time within 2 weeks of
    the order being placed!
    
    The whole point in my order being placed in AUG for NOV 3 delivery was
    to get the car before XMAS....  after speaking to Audi, who say to
    guarentee delivery at the requested date, the order should be placed
    before 3rd week of AUG!... I could have waited until sep to order, and
    would probably got a free sunroof thrown in for good measure, but
    rather than wait, I placed the order 1st week in AUG.
    
    I have said it before, and I shall say it again.... it's time to
    vendorise CAR FLEET!

    whole.  We are trying to reduce cost by �2,500 per employee, its about
    time car fleet woke  up to their responsibilities.

What's the source of this information ?
Fleet told us that the excess mileage charge does not come out of your
cost centre.

The ZX Volcane on the standard list is the obsolete 1.9 model; it was replaced
in the summer with the 2.0i engine, with a cat as standard.

Fleet know this, as a colleague of mine tried to order a Volcane about three
months ago, and was told to submit a quote, as the 1.9 was no longer available.
He didn't care whether it was a 1.9 or a 2.0.

Interestingly enough, the 2.0 with a cat is cheaper than  the 1.9 with the
optional cat.... I wonder what price it will eventually come in at?

    	Re Volcane prices, I'm still waiting for a written quote from car
    fleet for the 2.0 manual model, but have been advised that has worked
    out at �690.  This is for ABS and non-metallic paint.  The equivalent
    on the old preferred list would have been around �550 if memory serves
    (base car + ABS + catalyst).
    
    	
    	Out of interest, the auto version is still available as a 1.9, and

    I sent an order form for a Golf GTI with mettalic paint as the only
    extra. All of which is on VTX and worked out that i would get the car
    for 764 pounds. Of course Car Fleet had other ideas and sent off for a
    quote to the leasing companies and i got a quote for 878 pounds. Of
    course i complained bitterly that i was only going to pay the figure
    that i see on VTX and no more (less i wouldn't mind!!). It took 2
    months of phone calls and finally intervention from my manager to convince Car
    Fleet that i must get the car for the price displayed on VTX. Of
    course, in the meantime my current car has gone over the 3 year/60,000
    mile lease and DEC(?) are probably paying Hertz extra Wonga for the
    priviledge......AND i still haven't got a delivery date yet!!!!
    Is it me, or do others have these sort of (minor) problems with Car
    Fleet?

    	Hummpphh!!!   I have this lunchtime managed to get hold of the keys

    	that started on August 27th. I wanted an estate, prefably Peugeot

    	The listing in VTX is always out of date. I have even resorted to
    	continous checking of VTX and mailing fleet within 30 minutes of a
    	new car entering the list...but being first to ask doesn't

    similar car to what you want and get a discount on it. If you find a
    car you fancy that is a bargain you can take it for 3 months (or till
    end of lease if you really want) and delay delivery on your new one.

    	frequently they're often little more than a blurr (there have been
    	3 different people dealing with take-over cars in the last 2

    Re a few back.
    
    Of the 2 leasing companies we use, Hertz is the more lenient.  Im
    currently over the 60k miles on my present car, and was worried about
    the cost of being over the limit.  I was told that Hertz dont charge
    for this but PHH charge 17p per mile.  Also there is a 3 month 'window'
    with Hertz which allows Digital to return the car 3 months earlier than
    agreed, if the car is over the 60k mile limit...PHH do not have such a
    facility.
    
    recently I was refused details of a car on the take-over list, because
    someone is test driving it...SO WHAT ??.  Do I now have to wait a few
    days, request the info again, to find out about a car..just coz its
    being test driven, doesnt mean that its not available.. Also if 2
    people, or more, are interested in the same car it should go to the
    person who want to take the car for the long term, as the admin costs
    for changing cars must cost us something....so perhaps 1st come, 1st
    served isnt cost effective ??

In the new '92 price lists, the Cavalier GSi is no longer there; I guess the
16V SRi replaces it.  Oh, and this means all the Cavalier models on the
standard car list are no longer available, as L is now LS and GL is now
GLS and so on.

A colleague of mine (who unfortunately has just gone home) asked for
a quote for a Cav GLS, which costs MORE than the GL on the scheme, even
though it is now the Vauxhall equivalent of the old model, and even though
the GLS costs LESS than the GL used to!!!

Still, you gotta try to claw back some of that �26M per year that our
cars cost ;-)

    re. last few about Vauxhall Cavaliers
    
    Vauxhall have changed the Cavalier range for 1993, as pointed out in
    the last few replies (i.e. "L" variant is now "LS", "GL" now "GLS").
    
    The SRi was a 130hp car, but for '93 has the 115hp catalyzed (sp?)
    engine, same as a 2.0L (or LS now), GLS, CD, etc. The GSi has been replaced
    by the Cavalier Turbo; a 200hp turbo-charged, 6-speed machine.
    So I guess Vauxhall have put the GSi's 2.0 16-valve engine into the SRi
    to create an SRi 16V with 150hp, to "fill the gap" between models.
    
    Just to confuse things even more, there'll be a 6-cylinder Cavalier
    along soon...
    
    See note 1934 for more info about Cavailer changes, and impact on Preferred
    Car List.

    
    Took delivery of my Golf GTi this morning. It's a beauty!! Seems a lot
    better than my old one (which i have NO complaints about). The power
    steering is a great help.
    BTW, Car fleet got their act together in the end and i only paid the
    VTX price for the car (See earlier note on ****-up). I think it's worth
    every penny.

It's possibly a fair price for the turbo, but the original quote didn't mention 
this. However, when you think the market price is the same as the MR2 T bar
(18k), then 2700 is a bit steep. I know of people who've picked up MR2s
for 1800.

    These Subaru Legacy turbo estates are quite wild machines - I was
    following one a couple of weeks back and had trouble keeping up with it
    in my R19 16V. If I ever have to go for an estate then this machine
    would come high up my list.

    Having travelled in a R19 16V and the Subaru Legacy Turbo, I'd be
    surprised if the R19 had a chance (good as it is).  It's competing with
    4WD and 2 lires 16V and Turbo.  It's not as quick as a Cossie, but
    close enough for me.

    
    According to the Sabaru ad, the 0-60 is quoted at 6.2 and is quoted at
    around 197 BHP

    rejected (even though it costs the same as Metallic Paint and is also

    My problem is how can I get a quote for a car with no more extras?
    To expand:-
    Vauxhall cars seem to be cheaper now than the preferred list eg a 16v

    I would like a Carlton but all the extras are on the preferred list as
    options so whatever quote I put in will be met at the price on the
    list. In other words I can't get an up to date price - more or less.
    
    I asked whether they requote as an order is received and was told no -
    a standard car costs what it says regardless of what a "new" quote

    Well, you can't get an individual quote if the extras are listed in vtx
    preferred list.
    
    The way 'round this is to specify a low cost "extra" like an extra
    brake light for the back window or a dealer fit option that is not an

    Specifying a towbar - they are not on the list of optional extras.
    
    By the way.... aren't ALL cars cheaper now than the scheme?? With the
    5% Car Tax removed they should be.... until early next year when
    everyon seems to be putting their prices up to cover the pound
    fluctuations.
    
    If I forget to say I am buying a company car, the garages all tell me
    "Order before Christmas - and avoid the new year rises". If I say its a
    company car they all say "Thers is no expected changes between now and
    Easter"!!

Rover and Ford recently increased their prices, and some of the German 
manufacturers have done too. I don't know if it's as much as 5%, but
the difference when it comes to quotes will probably be negligible.

Well, I must say I was a little disappointed about the above price, the reason
being that I rang up Car Fleet because it took so long to get the above quote
offically & was quoted 1180 pounds!
As you can see above the price changed somewhat when it came thru offically.
Upon ringing Car Fleet I was informed that they'd got the driver price wrong.
To add to that the above came thru a day before the Xmas break which meant I
had to order the car sharpish before the quote expired.
I had of course sent off an order form believing the price to be 1180 pounds
& was told it had been received & ordered as we spoke over the phone.
When calling again however due to the increase in price, the order on the system
could not be found, nor could the form itself.
I had to quickly fill in another form & fax it thru.

The extra's incidently are locking wheel bolts & mudflaps. 
So I did get a couple of extra's for the offical (what a coincidence) car price
on the preferred car list.

Does this spell an end to the cheap car quote??????

    Just read the note about the Frontera Sport quote, I took deliery of
    mine two weeks ago, after the first thousand miles no problems. The
    spec was for the electric pack, metallic paint, bull bar with driving
    lamps and fogs, the cost was #805. However, this order went in on
    July 4th 1992, and was delivered on 26th January 1993, so you can
    expect a long wait if you order one!

    If according to the Fleet guidelines on VTX we're not allowed to add
    optional extra's apart from towbars & alarms.  What are we supposed
    to do about things like mudflaps, locking wheel nuts & bootliners.
    These items are available to 'protect the vehicle', so surely it is to
    everyones benefit to recognise they exist by either accepting quotes
    with them on, or adding them to the 'optional extras on the preferred
    list'.

   "options":
    
A range of factory fitted options are also offered at fixed annual prices
which can be added to the basic lease cost. Where a radio/cassette recorder is
not provided as standard option please refer to the guidelines for
"Non-standard" radio equipment.

Quotes will not be submitted for cars from the Preferred Car List with minor
dealer fitted extras, i.e., mud flaps, locking wheel nuts.  If these are
required they may be fitted after delivery at the employees expense.
