826.88 | Noisy heater fan in a 1993 | PEAKS::OAKEY | | Mon Jan 27 1997 23:04 | 11 |
| I've got a 1993 F150 (Supercab, 351 Windsor, 4 speed automatic) with a very
noisy heater fan. The best I can describe it is that it howls and/or whines --
sounds like the fan is rubbing against the casing.
Is the fan something easy to get at and remove and repair and/or replace, or is
this one of those projects akin to having to pull the engine in order to empty
the ash tray?
If it's relatively easy, does anyone have any hints?
Roger

| I have the same problem with my f-250 (1992).. I've had it out once
and managed to quiet it down for about 1 month.... on the f-250 the
blower comes out through the engine compartment. 4 screws, unplug the
harnest and out it comes, real easy.. the hard part is parting with
the money to buy a new one.. :^)

Do you have a ballpark figure?

| re. .88
FIX it or REPLACE it! Any motor that binds up is a potential fire
hazard if allowed to overheat.
A boneyard unit is cheaper if you can find one.
You can also potentially `rescue' the one you have REEEL CHEEP with
a little time investment if it hasn't been squawking for too long.
1. Mark the "UP" position of the blower & motor assy. by scratching
a mark or with white chalk.
2. Remove the assembly and bench it.
3. find the no-load-end bearing housing bump in the center of
the non-fan end of the motor housing.
4 Make a small hole in the end or top side of the bearing bump by
PUNCHING, NOT DRILLING it.
5 Use a sharp instrument (struck by a hammer) to achieve the initial
penetration and hole, and a very pointed nail set punch to enlarge
it as required.
6. Make the hole large enough to inject oil with an oil can or
via a paper clip dipped in the oil.
7. Fashion a tiny rubber plug for the hole out of a small scrap cut
from a rubber hose, inner tube, soft mechanical pencil eraser etc.
8. Apply 5-10 drops of lubricant while rotating the fan assy. by hand
to work it in and re-plug the hole.
9. Locate the load-end-bearing at the base of the motor shaft where
it enters the motor housing and apply lubricant at that point
several drops at a time till the fan feels free and rotates easily.
RECOMMENDED LUBRICANTS:
- Slick 50 "One Lube"
- Any "MOLY" motor oil additive
(contains Molybdenum Disulfide)
- "Mobil-1" or ANY 100% synthetic Motor Oil
- Automatic Transmission Fluid (Dexron II)
Don't use penetrating oils like "All-In-One", "WD40", "Liquid
Wrench" etc. They penetrate great, but they're lousy long term
lubricants for this type of application and the penetrants tend to
`eat' the lacquer insulation on your motor's windings potentially
shorting them out.
Good Luck,
John
