OK, Seeing I was selfish enough to start this note I guess I should
entery the first reply and hope that others follow.
In Jan. of this year my girl and I started planning our new "Hobby
Shop". She does stained glass and I models. We use the smallest
spare bedroom in the house because out house is a split level and
her parents live in an "In-Law" apartment down stairs.
When this room first became the house hobby shop it was the normal
bedroom with wall to wall carpeting and the basic four walls. In
moving in the room got the normal wall shelves, a work bench I used to
have in the cellar on the duplix I rented and the old kitchen table.
I was unsitely as are most shops. So enough history...
As I mentioned we decided to redue the room back in Jan. That's
four months ago. It's taken us that long to decide on what we wanted,
colors and get the materials ordered. Within the last week it's all
started to come together. Sunday was spent with the final moving out
of the existing hobby room. This has ment that the hobby items found
new home throughout the house. Monday was a golf dayso nothing got
done. Tuesday we preped the walls and woodwork for paint and applied
the first coat. After this dried we knew it would need additional
coats. That painting happened wednesday. Yesterday was push day.
We had the vynal flooring and the cabinets were scheduled for delivery.
You see we are using kitchen cabinets as working surfaces and storage
to keep everything neat. Ok as I said, yesterday was push day. We
both decided to take a half day and work on the room. We removed the
carpet, foam backing, staples, and tack strips. Cleaned up the area
and proceeded to lay down the vynal flooring. We were in the middle of
theis when the cabinets arrived so we broke to help them unload. The
cabinets were stored in the kitchen until we got the flooring done and
then we moved the unboxed cabinets into place. Presently all of the
base cabinets are in place with the countertop loosely on top. The two
wall cabinets for my side were mounted last night. Today after work
the two wall cabinets for her side will be mounted.
More later.

| Don't forget lighting. I've found that you can't have too much
lighting.
I have shop lights with daylight bulbs in them over my layout table.
Each of the other work surfaces has one or two desk lamps. The
Grossman's bargain outlet near me had (has?) combination flourescent
and incandescent desk lamps for around $25 (don't remember exactly).

To add to my previous reply...
My side of the room consists of two 48" base cabinets with two drawers
each and two largeswinging doors. On top of this is an 8" 4" counter
top. Mounted on the wall on either end is a 24/24 wall cabinet. It's
planned to have a valance secured between these two wall cabinets with
a 4ft light fixture hidden behind the valance.
Her side consists of one 48" base cabinet and a 24" drawered base.
There is a 24" open space between these two cabinets to allow her some
leg room so she can sit down at the counter. She has a similar wall
set up as I do. In addition I'm toying with the idea of under cabinet
lighting but this will be after the other lighting is in place and only
if the lighting proves insufficient.
The only other cabinet is a 24 x 24 utility closet cabinet that goes
against the inner wall of the room. This to be used to store tall
items.
I hope to be done with the installations my next weekend and be moving
back into the room. I have two pattern and two sailplane ships to
complete along with a number of other projects.

| I thought I'd put in mine.
I have several boxes of 70s magazines that I never unpacked that
support some scrap lumber to make a bench. The bench surface has pieces
of my last 8 projects slowly encroaching on the 1' by 2' building area.
Storage consists of having things fall off the back of the table out of
reach.
This isn't the design, but it sure seems to be the implementation! 8^)

1317.5 | Power strips all along the bench(es) | ZENDIA::REITH | Jim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02 | Fri May 03 1991 14:33 | 6 |
| On a more serious note...
The one thing I lack in my shop that I always wanted is lots of power
strips. In some of the hardware labs I've worked in we had benches with
power strips all along the back (outlets every foot the whole length).
I could really use one of those strips along the back edge of my bench.

| Ditto on the wonderful workshop.
Just last weekend I finally got around to buying a 6 outlet power
strip to get away from running extention cords from two wall outlets.
I velcroed the power strip to the side of my 5 ft. computer table
which in turn, supports the hollow core door that is my building
bench.
I also have encroachment problems, but it's the current project
debris that encroaches on the current project. When the sandpaper,
CA/epoxy bottles , razor blades, straight edges, et al finally get
too thick, I push them down to one end of the door where they gradually
dribble off the end landing in......my storage area consisting of
numerous small boxes and empty butter containers each containing
vital equipment arranged in no fathomable order but filed in my
head such that I can find any needed item the same day I start looking
for it..usually.
The nice big storage cabinet still sits unassembled in its box,
waiting for its resting place to be cleared of various fuselages
and wings standing on end in the corner.
Now I've depressed myself.

I have a 3'x4' piece of half inch plywood sitting on top of 2 old
TV tray's. This is set up next to the bed in the spare bedroom which
is what I sit on. Power is provided with an extension cord in a wall
outlet. Tools, epoxy, sand paper and other misc. stuff is kept on
the night stand. Lighting is one of those old (10 years) modern lamps
with the softball size light bulbs. Secondary lighting is provided by
the skylight.

| My workbench is a discarded dresser - bequeathed to me by a roommate in
an earlier life. I have an Eldon Lind Magnet Magic builder board (4'x
2' steel plate) sitting on top of it, that I move to the much flatter
kitchen counter for building sessions - just the glueing anyway.
The edge of the steel plate serves as a great straight edge for cutting
monocote, too.

| Beware of your power drain! You might blow a breaker. I too am doing up
my/her Hobby Room. I know that most of the power eaters that her and I
use do not eat much. But if one day you had several stuff plugged in
and she had several things plugged in and then someone turned on the
blender that just happens to be on the same circuit.... POP!
I solved it by putting in an extra circuit to the Hobby Room. Its not
hard to do and the cost was small to do it myself.

| OK, to bring the hobby shop up to date... I installed the
two wall cabinets for my side on thursday night. Friday when I got
home I did the two wall cabinets on her side and then we went out.
The next day I found time to work on the room was monday. I was able
to get the utility box with one outlet an a switch installed above the
countertop and another box installed at the top of the wall cabinets to
connect the lights. Tuesday I secured the counter top down on her side
and then went to work on the electric on my side, this being completed
before dinner. After dinner I secured the counter top on my side and
installed a 4ft light fixture between the two wall cabinets. Last
night on my way home from work I stopped by a K Mart and purchased a
4ft fixture for her side. This took all of 15 minutes to install.
I got a phone call from the place we purchased the cabinets from and
they say they'd be delivering the two valances and the 24 x 24 utility
cabinet today. So I'm planning on installing these tonight. Except
for some window treatments and pictures she wants to hang the room will
be completed tonight.
Because the lights above the benches are activated by the switch
above the bench this poses a problem when you first enter the room.
You end up walking into the middle of a dark room to turn on a light.
To resolve this we've decided to mount a light fixture on top of the
utility cabinet facing up onto the ceiling. As you enter the room the
room switch at the door controls the outlet that will fall behind the
utility cabinet. This will allow us to run the light without the cord
showing. We'll see how it turns out.

| Friday they delivered the Utility cabinet and the two valances. The
cabinet has been installed however I haven't gotten around to the two
valances. Perhaps tomorrow. The Lady has gone out and purchased a
mini blind so that will also have to be installed. Hopefully it will
all be over soon so i cane get everything back into some idea of an
active hobby shop and get the "Stinger glider finished.
