1258.0. "Bulk source for Nylon Bolts?" by ZENDIA::REITH (Jim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02) Mon Oct 22 1990 15:23

    Forgive me Al, but I couldn't find an appropriate topic. Please move this
    wherever it belongs. I'm looking for a manufacturer that sells nylon
    bolts (4-40 and 6-32) in boxes of 100 or so. I'm going through the
    things pretty fast and not getting any damage so I'd like to continue
    to use the sizes I have but I'd like to get them cheaper than $.75 for
    four. Any good sources hiding out there?

1258.1Hobby Lobby?MJBOOT::BENSON__Frank Benson, DTN 348-4944__Mon Oct 22 1990 16:097
    Hobby Lobby has bulk stuff in the back of their catalogs. Don't know
    the number, but they're in Brentwood, TN.

1258.2I thought there might be a non-hobby sourceZENDIA::REITHJim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02Mon Oct 22 1990 16:314
    That's the second reference to them I've gotten today (one in the
    woodworking notesfile where they were talking about Am-fast in
    Worcester MA) I never seem to get past all the beautiful gliders in the
    front (from Graupner) I guess I'll have to check it out when I get home.
1258.3special screws from BergBRAT::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerMon Oct 22 1990 22:5923
    The Nylon screws mentioned in 124.45 were bought from Berg, an
    industrial supplier. But the prices after postage are higher than what
    you just mentioned; in my 1988 catalog (pg 425) the Nylon machine
    screws are 18 to 20 cents each in sizes 4-40, 6-32, and 8-32. I think
    I paid 15 or 20% higher than that and then added in the postage.

    The Tru-Value hardware chain carries Nylon machine screws in 6-32 and
    8-32; maybe 4-40; but not 2-56, and not in socket cap heads. Any
    hardware store should be able to special order by the box.

    I need more screws myself; I'll split boxes with you if you wish. If
    you mail order, beware of back order situations. Unlike the hobby mail
    order shops that "eat the shipping" on back orders, a place like Berg
    will ship out a $3 back order and let you pay the few dollars of
    shipping on it. I paid dearly for my Nylon 2-56 bolts. But they did
    carry them and all sorts of other screws not available locally, e.g.
    0-80 socket head steel cap screws with a Nyloc insert! (Yes, at a buck
    apiece!)

1258.4I'll try to get them and let you knowZENDIA::REITHJim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02Tue Oct 23 1990 09:396
    Thanks Al. My sister-in-law works at a local hardware store and I'll have
    her check into it for me. I've been using the 4-40 bolts on the Gnome and
    more recently on a little .049 bipe (that I WILL rebuild. It was too much
    fun!) and I'd like to use the 6-32s for landing gear on my Panic and others.
    I was planning on getting a box of 100 of each since at 2-4 per wack, I'll
    use them soon enough. I'll post the prices once I find out about it.

1258.6Ace or Sig??ZENDIA::REITHJim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02Thu Oct 25 1990 09:318
    Thanks. My sister-in-laws store doesn't deal with the previous supplier so
    I'm off to find a Tru-Value store near home. I'll give these guys a try
    also. I looked in the New Hobby Lobby catalog I got a few months back
    and they DON'T list any bulk nylon bolts (anymore?). The new Tower catalog
    just came in and they don't even list 4-40 and 6-32 bolts bulk or otherwise.
    The ones I've been getting are Ace or Sig. Anybody got one of those catalogues
    around so we can find out their price also? I'll keep checking out the
    commercial suppliers since I feel that a non-hobby source will be cheaper.
1258.7Got my bolts this weekendZENDIA::REITHJim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02Mon Dec 10 1990 10:5310
    Just to wrap this note up.

    I got my nylon bolts this weekend. I had asked for 1/2" to 1" long 4-40
    and 6-32 bolts. I ended up with 100 4-40x1/2" and 100 6-32x5/8" bolts
    for $5 total. Since the packages of 4 are $.65, this seems like a
    pretty good deal. My local Ace hardware store ordered them from their
    supplier. Stock up in the off season when the wait isn't a problem

    I use the 4-40 bolts for glider wing (Gnome) hold downs and the 6-32s
    for landing gear bolts.

    NYLON.

    (It's sorta like plastic ;^) One of those magical "White man" materials
    that always baffles the Injun's ;^) ;^)

    Sorry, couldn't resist
    Pan head, single slot (not Phillips) nylon wing bolts. Small diameter
    for HLS and breakaway landing gears
1258.10Yer not normal :-(HPSRAD::AJAIMon Dec 10 1990 13:0914
    When you started talking about 4-40 and 6-32, I figured it had to be
    steel bolts, as I haven't seen nylon versions in the catalogues other
    than 1/4" wing hold-down bolts.

    Sooo, I fig'ged ya wuz, like the rest of 'em pale faces, speaking with
    forked tongue about STEEL bolts under a NYLON bolt note. Obviously, I
    gave you too much credit to think ya wuz normal.

    Next time, you should read the fully worked out examples by George Bush
    (Chapter 1: No New Taxes), before posting, so I don't get confused.

    :-)

1258.11Sorry for the confusionZENDIA::REITHJim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02Mon Dec 10 1990 13:307
    Sorry for confusing you by adhering to the topic title. ;^) ;^)

    Maybe Al can move it somewhere more obscure so you have it for easy
    reference ;^) ;^)

    BTW: the ones I've been buying in packages of 4 are from Sig but I
    haven't seen one of their catalogues since the 70's

    George Bush never said "No new taxes." What he _really_ said was....
    "No nude Texans!"

    BTW, nylon bolts and screws are available in just about any size down
    to 2-56.
