538.1 | Davis Diesel Has Some Universal Clamp-on Mufflers | LEDS::WATT | | Thu May 12 1988 15:54 | 15 |
| Dan,
I have never heard of whisper mufflers, but there is a new line
of quiet mufflers out sold by Davis Diesel down in Connecticut.
They claim to have adapters to fit most engines of all sizes, and
they do clamp on. They have an add in RCM and I called them for
more info. They sell adapters for each model engine to mate up
with the muffler. They have designs for side mounted and vertical
mounted engines and a pitts style for exiting straight down from
a side mounted engine. I ordered one of these about three weeks
ago. I'll let you know how I like it when it comes. THey claim
that their mufflers are quiet without reducing performance. We
shall see if this is true.

| I'd personnally opt for something made to fit the engine rather than a
clamp on but that's because I just haven't liked the ones that i've
tried. I've got a Fox 45 with a Muffle-Aire clamp on muffler. I'm
getting rid of the muffler. There's always black oil around the point
where the muffler meets the exhaust port from vibration rubbing
aluminum off of the engine.

538.5 | Davis Mufflers in the $30 Range | LEDS::WATT | | Fri May 13 1988 08:53 | 10 |
| Kay,
I don't have the ad with me, but most of the Davis mufflers
were in the $30 range with adapter. They are expensive looking
and they have internal baffles which the stock mufflers lack.
(Except the new K&B) I'm still waiting for my order. When I talked
to them on the phone, they sounded like they were swamped with orders
from places where noise is a big problem.

538.19 | What kind of muffler is this? | MDSUPT::EATON | Dan Eaton | Thu Nov 03 1988 10:19 | 32 |
| I got a call from my brother the other night. He said to stop by
and see him because he had a muffler for me. I stopped by last night
and picked up this muffler that had been found on a parking lot
where my brother works and was destined for the trash can when my
brother saw it.
Somebody lost a nice muffler. What I've got is a nicely machined
muffler that I can't identify. The most interesting feature is that
there's an open tube right down the center of the thing. Exhaust
gases flow thru the adapter into a chamber formed by the outer wall
and the inner tube. From there they flow out of the chamber thru
some holes drilled in the inner tube and on out of the inner tube.

Any body got an idea as to who makes this muffler and how well it
works? The one I have looks like it was a strap on type. I went
thru the Tower catalog and it looks like Macs makes something called
a venturi muffler that might work the same way. Looks different
though. Mine has a black anodized outer case with aluminum end plates.

| My K&B .60 has a muffler that fits your description.
I got the engine second hand but I think the muffler was
stock issue at the time - tho I can't be sure.
Like most stock mufflers - it is not overly quiet - just
a fancy manifold.

538.24 | J'TEC "SNUF-LER" muffler | LEDS::HUGHES | Dave Hughes (LEDS::HUGHES) NKS-1/E3 291-7214 | Tue Nov 15 1988 17:31 | 31 |

I saw an ad in this month's MA for the "Snuf-ler" from J'TEC. I
sent them a stamp and they sent me their flyer. This muffler is
attached as a modification to your original expansion muffler. You
remove the back half (I think the OS mufflers unscrew in the
middle, don't know about other brands), drill a 5/32 hole in the nose
cone, and bolt this thing on the back (except the O.S. 1.08 model
which is installed fully inside the stock muffler). It creates a 4
chamber muffler. Here are the specs they claim:
- Meets AMA muffler rule suggestions
- 3 to 10 decibels quieter than stock muffler
- No power loss with possible 300-500 RPM increase
- Improves engine idle - Gives better fuel economy
- Easily attached to most .25-1.08 stock mufflers
- No special adapters required
- Heat and corrosion resistant Black "E" coat finish
- Weighs 3.5 oz
- Fits ASP, BRAT, ENYA, FOX, HP, IRVINE, K&B, OS MAX, ROYAL, YS,
and SUPER TIGRE mufflers
- Costs $24.95 (+ $2.50 postage per order)
They also offer a series of in-cowl mufflers, and versions of the
Snuf-ler that attach to those in-cowl mufflers (consists of
neoprene extension tubing, clamp the Snuf-ler on the bottom of the
fuse).
The company is:
J'TEC, 164 School St., Daly City, CA 94014 (415)756-3400
I'm thinking of ordering one of these. Any comments?

Just for general info, J-Tec is John Tatone. He sold his old company,
which retains the name Tatone, but is not involved with it in any
way. For those who like(ed) Tatone's products, J-Tec is his new

538.26 | Snuffler for the OS61 long stroke | SA1794::TENEROWICZT | | Thu Jul 27 1989 11:03 | 38 |
| I thought I'd put this in here...
I've recently uprchased a Davis Desiel Snuffler Muffler for my
OS61 long stroke. Talking to the guy he said I can expect a 900
RPM increase over the stock muffler. He also said that I should
get DB readings in the 90-94 DB range. I ordered the muffler because
we had our first reported problem with noise. Seems that one gentleman
app 1/2 mile to our west can hear us and complained to our landlord.
Funny thing is he's trying to sell his house. I wonder if that has
anything to do with it. Anyways, getting back to the muffler.
The guy said I should be able to easily pull an 11/9 prop on 5%
nitro using this muffler. I'll see this sat. He sells two
lengths of muffler. I purchased the longer of the two. The unit
itseld is a generic muffler with adapters for your specific engine.
The adapter has a miller recess that slips over the header portion
of the muffler. The instructions say to form a liberal beed of RED
heat resistant silicone within the milled portion and then to insert
the muffler. Clean off the excess from the inside and the outside
and then let this set up for 24 hrs. After which time the muffler
can be installed on the engine. When I install the muffler tonight
I'll also coat the adapter where it meets the engines exhaust port
with silicone. The installation is done using an aircraft grade
hose clamp. It differs from the automotive type in that the normal
slots cut in the clamp where the threaded bolt runs are stamped.
Not cut. This stamping leaves a depression rather than an open slot.
The clamp is also made from stainless steel. I'll let everyone know
how it works. To give you some idea how long this muffler is the
stinger out the back of the muffler hangs just past the leading
edge of the wing. I'd guess it's app. 10 inches long. One last item
is that the pressure fitting comes installed and the instructions
indicate that this muffler pressurizes a tank better that a stock
muffler. Again we'll see.

| I picked up a Tatone "pitts" style muffler for my OS 50 for my Cub;
but it doesn't have any point specified for drilling/tapping for a
pressure tap.
Where is the right place?? Just any place on the barrel?
Thanks,

| > Where is the right place?? Just any place on the barrel?
High (not low) so that it doesn't just transmit oil to the
fuel tank and/or clog up. But not so high that you can't later
mount this same engine inverted (or up right if it already
is inverted). Inboard (not outboard) so that the
pressure line can be routed back into the fuselage without
making an extra loop.
