283.0. "long control linkage solutions" by CLOSUS::TAVARES (John--Stay low, keep moving) Wed Apr 01 1987 11:37

Sullivan Golden Rods are made in 48" lengths. Just check with some
other hobby shops. I think the Sullivans are the best on the
market, with noticeably less resistance than other brands. They use
an extrusion with little raised surfaces, so the friction is cut way
down. I suppose the rods could be lubricated with graphite, too.

BTW -- I love to build models, but there's one job that I absolutely
hate, and that's installing the servos and hooking up the control
surfaces. My latest approach has been to do this first thing, so
after the fuse is all put together, all I have to do is hook up the
rods. But on my Watts Up (an electric glider) a last-minute glitch
has caused me to tear up the rear half of the fuse to fix a binding
elevator rod. Any words of wisdom (or sympathy) on that? Do you
other folks install the servos early?

Next time around, the rudder and elevator is going on as soon as the
fuse is framed up, and I'll be sure to check the surfaces for
freedom before I go any further.

On the subject of long push rods...
as well as the Golden Rods which have already been mentioned
(these are extremly good), you may wish to consider some alternatives
which I have seen used on larger scale models in the U.K.
one is to locate the servos further back and use lead extensions
to get to the reciever (if your C of G can stand it)
Another.. is to use close loop wires (often used on Glider rudders)
which are cheap and easy to rig providing you take care with geometry.

This is about the best plase to ask this so here goes. Feel free to
move it if you find a better place.

I'm looking for/at fiberglass arrowshafts for the boom on a pod and
boom glider design I'm working on. All the archery places I've gone to
are aluminum only. One place found glass shafts in the economy section
of one catalog but would have to order them (minimum of a dozen $2
each) Does anyone know of a location in central Mass where I might be
able to buy one (1)? Or, is there enough interest that I might find
    buyers for the other 11?

I'll bring you one tomorrow. My bow is collecting dust.

I use fiberglass (and graphite too) arrow shafts to make kites. I can
sell you shafts in various diameters at my cost, or you might try
looking in a kite store. I'm pretty sure that Tee Pee Archery in Acton
(on Rt. 28) has fiberglass and graphite arrows, but they will probably
want to charge you a lot, especially if you buy a single arrow.

I've also got a few fiberglass tubes that are .414 inch in diameter and
about 50 inches long. These might make a dandy tail boom...

    Marty,

That would be great! I'd be interested in info on the 50" tubes (and
probably getting one from you) I'm up in ZK periodically so maybe I'll
drop by and say high (or I might see you at Bose)

I'm interested in some of these fiberglass tubes too. How much do
    they cost?

What size do you guys want? I've got a few that are .350 inch outside
diameter and about 30 inches long. They cost under $2 each. The bigger
stuff cost under $5, I'll check when I get home tonight.

The graphite tubes are much smaller in diameter, the largest is .254
outside diameter, the cost for these is $2.

There's a place on Rt 20, between Marlb. and Westb. called Orchard
mumble Sporting goods, or some such, they're on the east bound side.
They have an indoor archery range, and an extensive line of supplies.

If you can't find the place, I'll take a drive by and get you some
    better directions.

I don't know about y'all, but I buy fiberglass arrowshafts at the local
hobby shop for use as pushrods. These are 1/4" dia by ~24" and may not
work for yer' application but, for what it's worth........

Sure, I know where he is! I just couldn't get a word in edgewise to ask
    ;^) ;^)

I ended up getting about a 4 foot piece of ~.5" fiberglass shaft from
Marty Sasaki today while up at ZKO. I'll be trying this out in the
weeks to come. I'll have to check around Ray's better next time. Marty
said there was a kite shop in the Boston area that handles the shafts
(graphite also) as well as a mail order supplier. I asked him to list
the sources in the appropriate supplier notes (hint hint ;^)
