| New org chart has been released by Benetton. In summary, Pat Symonds,
who started long ago when the team was called Toleman, is promoted to
Technical Director replacing Ross Brawn. In previous years Pat Symonds
was Michael Schumacher's and Jean Alesi's track engineer.
Benetton have indicated that last year's B196 problems were caused by
several mistakes:
- overconfidence as a result of the 1995 title, very little development
- late introduction
- untested modifications required by Michael Schumacher in 1995 like
the stupid oversized gearbox
- several modifications which resulted in the aerodynamics being
totally upset
This last bullet was indeed noticed by Jean Alesi who had been given
the opportunity to drive the succesful 1995 car and felt extremely
happy about its handling. The 1996 car was a complete disaster with
unpredictable changes between under and oversteer and very little
reaction to different setups.
The 1997 car will be the Benetton car with the most throrough tests
completed since the beginning of the team. Currently the B197 is
certainly the most promising car for the 1997 season. The new RS9
engine is very well integrated and the cooling systems have been
entirely tested and validated. The new engine is lighter and has a
lower CoG.
The new Williams FW19 will start testing next week. Patrick Head
explained this late introduction by saying Williams wanted to avoid
disclosing their new winner and being copied by the competition.
