886.0. "M Jag" by VOGON::BALL (...but he hasn't got enough box tops yet) Mon Dec 11 1989 14:06

I read something in the paper yesterday about Jaguar bringing out a new 250K
production car based on their Le Mans job to compete with top-end Porsches and
Ferraris.

It's supposed to have a top speed of 200mph and a silly 0-125 speed.

Does anybody know any more about this and is anyone getting one for Christmas?

car is priced at 299,999 pounds plus annual rate of inflation until delivered
plus car tax plus VAT.

Tom Walkinshaw (Jaguar Sport) took over 1000 orders together with cash/draft
deposits of 57 grand each = almost 60 millions in one morning.

Folk that had orders accepted were given a contract stating that the production
line would be srapped after the 333rd model was completed (three cars will be
used for type approval).

Punters will be notified by the end of February if they will be allowed to buy
the car. Rumours are that only RHD cars will be made.

The value of the deposit has already doubled (assuming car will be delivered),
so there's plenty of people with the readies available...

were RHD ...

the reason for RHD only was (hopefully) to prevent speculators from buying
the car with the sole intention to export it at a huge profit.

The engine does not comply with US emissions laws (a further prevention),
but money will surely overcome this hurdle. Wonder how many would actually be
put on the open road anyway...

When do they plan to deliver this car? From 1992 EC emissions laws will
almost certainly be as strict as the US laws.

OK you disappointed purchasers now's your chance for the big
	killing.

Despite the fact that they haven't got the original supercar
out yet, jaguar have now announced another even more expensive
	model.

The XJR9 (?) is a sort of road going version of the group C
car and will weigh in at around 400,000 apparently, to genuine
enthusiasts only ie. through personal application. Purchase
will entitle you to do your best to destroy the little goldmine
by giving automatic entry to a series of circuit races, purely
	for the new model.

Make your discreet enquiries now. Personally I think I'll see
what the new Bugatti looks like before committing.

It's not being produced by Jag is it. I'd read that this was an old
TWR project that was temporarily shelved when the XJ220 was announced,
but has been bought forward again. And that Jaguar didn't admit they
    knew anything about it.

It could well make the XJ220 look a bit silly.

Not forgetting 'The Race' with huge prize money if you buy one. (I
reckon that is so TWR can make more money producing spares, body shells,
    etc...)

I read that the prize offered is a refund of the purchase price. Dunno if
this meant overall winner of the series or on a per race meeting basis :-)

    As reported by Autocar...

    Car will be called "R9R"
TWR will manufacture the car using the 7.0litre V12.
The chassis, transmission, brakes etc will be similar to the XJR9LM
    It will sell for 700,000
The purchasers will be entitled to enter a race, either with them
driving or a nominee on their behalf. First prize, 1M
There is already a running model, road legal, being driven around
Kiddlington. It has the registration TOM 4.

    Tom was smiling.....

It seems strange to me that this has only just made the papers.
Surely a number of people must have known about this ages ago?
Maybe Tom knows his days running WSPC for Jaguar are coming to
    an end?

Is this just conjecture? Hopefully so. Maybe it's just a good way
for TWR and/or Jaguar to make a few bob back on their investment
in their, now redundant V12 Group C machinery. Or maybe it's to
fund a new 2 race V12 machine (For Daytona and Le Mans)?

Maybe Tom knows his days running WSPC for Jaguar are coming to

It is conjecture - but I don't imagine TW was very happy at being
made to use the Ford V8, particularly when he had a 3.5 v12 under
development. And as an independent man, he must be finding Ford and
John Barnard a rather different proposition than Sir John Egan.

It would be nice wouldn't it. Unfortunately.....
There is no provision under the new Group C regs for any normally
apsirated car, other than 3.5 litre ones.

If I can spare the 700K to buy the car, I think I would be prepared
to gamble another 300K to pay Senna (or some other top F1 driver) to
take my place in the race. If I (they) won, I could pay them and
    keep the care for free...

I did read (in CAR this month) that Senna is reputedly paid 500K per
race this season. Surely, he would like to show his hand in some other
form of racing for suitable remuneration ?

Le Mans should be fun, though. What price a privateer Spice win or
maybe even the ADA! FISA WILL back down if they don't get enough
serious entries for Le Mans as it is, and will remain, the jewel
in the WSC. Witness the number of people at WSPC races compared
with the crowd at Le Mans (even in terms of proportion - Le Mans
crowds went up, everywhere else they went down!).

I'll be suprised if some sort of special rule isn't applied to
    Le Mans.

886.41Info from Fast Lane magazineCRATE::RUTTERRutter the NutterWed Dec 05 1990 15:0611
According to an article in Fast Lane (December issue),
the Walkinshaw Jaguar will only be sold as a race car now.

Reason stated was 'pressure from Jaguar factory', who
seem none to pleased at the way this car would out-perform
    the XJ220...

Also, Porsche will not now produce a road-going version
of their 962 - due to general public opinion on environmental issues.

886.43The worlds most expensive and complete kit car?DOOZER::JENKINSQuote......unquotEWed Dec 05 1990 18:3812

The reason for the R9 (now XJR-15 or somesuch I think) not being
sold as "road-going" was the need for type approval tests. To
complete the type approval tests you have to "write-off" a number
of cars. With very limited production this didn't make much sense
to TW, so he's selling the cars for "racing" only.

However, as the car conforms to all the "construction and use"
regulations, it would be quite possible to register it as a kit
    car.

The XJ220 recently broke the old Nurburgring production car record in the
hands of John Nielsen (Or was it Andy Wallace?). The record was broken
by quite a hefty margin and Jaguar CLAIM that the car was running on OE
tyres rather than some racing specials. Sounds like fun, eh?

A chat with a good friend over the weekend (his wife works at TWR)
revealed that TWR/Jaguarsport are developing a successor to the 220.
Tom W. is currently in the process of hiring a team to manage the project.

Initial plans are for a power unit to be supplied by a little company
who work out of Milton Keynes.........

886.46So ThereLARVAE::LINCOLN_JWed May 31 1995 14:3227
The Times at the weekend had an interesting article about
the fate of the XJ220. 350 cars were planned and 1500 people
applied. Production was stopped at 280 cars and 78 remain
	unsold.

In an out of court settlement 10 aspiring owners (more likely
speculators) have agreed to pay 100,000 each for the right
of not having to buy the car. This would be in excess of the
50,000 deposit they paid initially. The 1,150 disappointed
punters seem to have vapourised and there are 78 cars left
at a knockdown price of 250,000 (I bet you could do a deal
on it) instead of the 400,000 that it was.

Earlier in this note it was speculated as to how the car would
be a worth a million by the year 2000. I disputed this and
said 100,000. Unfortunately those replies have been deleted.

However I'm definitely winning the argument. It seems the
going rate "might be 190,000" according to the Times.

By some quirk of fate the same page included a report on
one of the few cars that can out accelerate the 220 and this
example only costs 25,000 - the Caterham SE8. This 4.3
litre Lotus 7 was described by Jeremy Whotsit as lethal,
the XJ220 was just lethal to your wallet.

Some of the cars might find their way into the BPR GT championship.
TWR have prepared a number of chassis: slightly detuned engine, light
chassis, etc ... competitive price if I remember well. Now, the car has
to prove against the usual McLaren GTR, F40 and Porsches.
