1478.0. "Self-Mutilation Ploy (SMP)" by CSC32::HAGERTY (Veni, Vedi, $Cmkrnli, Rebooti) Thu Dec 17 1992 09:37

    Years ago, in another life, I worked with a guy that coined the term
    "Self Mutilation Ploy", SMP for short. It was an introductory phrase
    that could always be counted on to introduce a horrible experience.
    Examples include:

    1) Great! It works! Now, I'll comment it.
    2) Trust me..

    You get the idea.

    Though a novice at the RC biz, I've noticed that this hobby has a
    number of SMP's. My limited experience has revealed the following
    ones:

    	1) I think I can stretch this glide out another 50 feet.
    	2) I'm almost positive I recharged the batteries last night.

    ...and the world class favorite:

    	3) Sure, I put the transmitter in the car.

    What other SMPs exist in RC'ing?

    	a) I lost my Z-bend pliers, but this is better.
    	b) No traffic ever comes along *this* road.
    	c) The wind sock only *LOOKS* full.
    	d) Nobody ever uses that frequency
    	e) Sure it's aerobatic, but it's still a good trainer.

	-	"Simple to build, easy to fly!" (tm).
	-	Man, that wing's unbreakable!

    o I've never had interference with this radio

    o Look, it does that at the bottom of every outside loop.....

    o Don't take all that stuff to the field, someone else will bring it.

    o That plug has lasted all summer.

    o It worked last time I used it!.

    o One last flight before I go....

    My favorite line I hear when I am instructing:

    I've watched you do it, how hard can it be? I'll
    try it myself first!!!!
1478.20Forget Last LineELMAGO::RMOUSERRON MOUSER, ABO/B3,552-2152Thu Feb 04 1993 13:113

In between those two is usually:

(It won't idle, well then, just run it at full throttle and go for it!.)

I'm too high, I'll have to go around <cough> S#!t

(can anyone climb trees)
1478.23More instructor goodies........ELMAGO::RMOUSERRON MOUSER, ABO/B3,552-2152Fri Feb 05 1993 16:0613
    Since I soloed ONCE, I thought I would go out by myself and
    fly.....will you help me fix it?

    But I charged the batteries last month!

    I didn't think the stuff you told me to correct was that im-
    portant.

    I did a range test 6 months ago. I didn't think you had to do
    another one after a crash.....

    I flew full scale planes 10 years ago and didn't think I needed an
    instructor.
1478.24More experienceCSC32::HAGERTYVeni, Vedi, $Cmkrnli, RebootiFri Apr 30 1993 10:4710

    	a) I'll cut the monocote, fix the problem, and re-monocote it.
           You'll never be able to see the repair.

        b) I haven't used these rubber bands too much.

    	c) I don't feel like going around. I'll just give some down
           elevator instead.

    	d) The wind will go down after I get up.

1478.26Tale from the Dark AgesCSC32::HAGERTYVeni, Vedi, $Cmkrnli, RebootiFri Sep 03 1993 11:0014
    From last night:

    "It's still light enough to fly. I still have plenty of depth
    perception on landing"

    "That sign is well to the left of the plane"

    because of the old favorite:

    "Aw, just one more flight".

    (Picture Dave, building another left half of an Eagle-2 wing while
    blushing).
