1260.0. "1/4 scale Albatross project" by SVCRUS::EVERS () Thu Oct 25 1990 10:57

     OK guys, I'm in search of a set of plans and or a kit of a
    WWI Albatrose. I have check out the kit from Proctor but the
    wallet can't swing that kind of cash in one hit. So I think
    my next step would be to scratch build. If anyone has any
    info on were I can get a set of 1/4 scale plans it would be
    greatly appreciated. This will be my first attempt at scratch
    building any kind of scale aircraft so if it takes me 3 or 4
    years,no problem.

                                    Thanks in advance
                                     Jerry Evers

1260.1CHECK WITH BOB HOLMAN.....UPWARD::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) 551-5572Thu Oct 25 1990 12:0218
    Re: .-1, Jerry,

    Yeah, I hear you regarding the price of the Proctor Albatros kit. The
    kit contains a LOT of value, i.e. all the scale detailing parts for
    engine, guns, etc. but it's still tough to shell out that much dinero
    at one shot.

    The best thing I can suggest is to check with Bob Holman'a plan service...
    he carries hundreds of 'em and I'd be amazed if he didn't have
    something on the DV-A.  I don't have anything here with Bob's address/
    phone number but I know several noters have his catalogs and can supply
    same.  How 'bout it, Kay....??

1260.3CLEVELAND GREAT RUBBER MODELS BUT.......UPWARD::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) 551-5572Thu Oct 25 1990 13:2732
    Re: .-1,

    Onliest problem with Cleveland is they were/are stick-type construction,
    tissue covered and intended for rubber or 1/2A gas power. They were
    primarily free flight designs (modifiable to U-control) and, as such,
    were lightly built and either compromised scale outline and/or omitted
    detail so as to make them more flyable.

    Cleveland kits were the state-of-the-art for flying scale in their day
    but are not that adaptable to today's RC application. They tend to be
    too small and require substantial beefing up...the end result remaining
    a model of somewhat less scale integrity than is normal nowadays. Ask
    Bruce Bretschneider about his project trying to RC a Cleveland design...
    I think Bruce'll concede that starting from scratch might've been less
    work.

    By all means have a look at Cleveland but I think you'll get more what
    you're seeking from Holman's catalog. All his plans were designed
    specifically for RC and, in many cases, Bob has accessories available.
    Also, Bob can blow the plan up for you if you'd like it larger than the
    original design. A caveat here, I doubt _anyone_ sells a kit or plans
    with better fidelity to scale than Proctor; no doubt some concessions
    to airfoil and/or stab area will have been made but, unless you plan to
    seriously compete the model, it'll look just fine. As my buddy, DAn'l
    Parsons is fond of saying, "You'll never tell the difference looking at
    it in a low pass at 75mph from the back of a galloping horse."

    I know that Holman and Scale model research list plans for this
    aircraft.

1260.6So far so good.SVCRUS::EVERSThu Oct 25 1990 14:1913

     As Al pointed out I am looking for the plan for the DV-A. One
    of my friends here at PKO has a Cleveland catalog dated 1987.
    The only problem is they don't carry a 1/4 scale plan. So Im
    going to order a new catalog to see if anything has change except
    prices which probably have. If anyone has an address or phone number
    of the company Al was talking about I'd appreciate it. Also if
    Mr. Moderator wishes to move this topic it is all right by me I
    wasn't sure if it should have gone in any specific topic.

                              Thanx

Jerry - plans are available from

     Scale Plans and Photo Service
     3209 Madison Avenue
     Greensboro, North Carolina 27403
     (919)292-5239

     They also have 3 different sets of documentation pictures
     available.

     71" Span Albatros D5a (1917) 1/5 scale $27.00
     89" Span 1/4 scale $35.00
     Page 9 of his catalogue

     I couldn't find one in the Holman catalogue but
     He has several unrelated catalogues and I
     don't have them all at work.

     but call and ask - he is at

     Bob Holman Plans
     P.O. Box 741
     San Bernardino, CA 92402
     (714)885-3595

     Also Scale Model Research has 4 different sets of
     documentation pictures available at

     Scale Model Research
     2334 Ticonderoga Way
     Costa Mesa, CA 92626
     (714)979-8058

Now for some free advice - no doubt worth just what you paid for it.

1. Tom Tenerowicz says "Never build anything you can get in kit form".
    If you think you will save money - look at my BJ note and you will
    see that in the long run the Proctor kit is cheap.

2. Get the plans catalogues first ("Bob Holman's" and "Scale Plans and
    Photo Service"). You may change your mind and decide to build a different
    airplane.

3. Get the documentation before the plans or kit. Be sure you can find
    a color scheme that you can document and that you will like.

1260.8How about ProctorLEDS::WATTWed Oct 31 1990 13:2710
    Jerry,
    	I've seen the Proctor kit and the 10 foot plans - very detailed! I
    know you can buy an extra set of plans with the kit for something like
    $50, so maybe you could get those plans. Tom Kozewski (sp wrong for
    sure) in the CMRCM has the Proctor kit. I'll bet you could get him to
    order a set of plans for you if they require that you've bought a kit.

re:-.1

    Anyone can buy plans for any of the Proctor kits. They have them all
    listed in the last catalog I got from them.

    I have been toying with the idea of buying a set of plans for the
    D5a myself.

    If you need prices, I can post them tonight or tomorrow.
    Let me know.

1260.10I use the term "SCALE"lightlySVCRUS::EVERSThu Nov 01 1990 15:1817

      Charlie I know Tom and I've been to his house and saw the kit,
    that is why I'd like to build. The kit is excellent but like I
    said before it is a little out of my price range. The kit is so
    detailed the wing ribs are even built to scale. Thats another
    reason I don't want the kit because after you cover the wings
    who's going to know wether they are scale or not. I'm not THAT
    picky went it comes to scale. I think that's why the kit costs
    so much because every piece in the kit is scale. I would like
    to compete in a scale competion but for a first timer I'd want
    it to look scale rather than it being built to an exact replica.
      To the gentleman in reply 9 could you post the address of
    Proctor Co. just so it's there if anyone else needs it.
