744.3 | Hot Kanary needs significant modifications for scale | SPKALI::THOMAS | | Thu Oct 27 1988 14:23 | 7 |
| If your considering building this kit for "scale" then I'd suggest
that you don't build it. I did and analysis a few years back and
found that to much would need to be changed in order to get the
outlines close. Kay Fisher had one. He bought it at an auction.
I don't know if he ever flew it.

744.4 | *HOT* KANARY _NOT_ MISNAMED..... | PNO::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) | Thu Oct 27 1988 14:34 | 13 |
| Bob,
Honestly assess yer' flying skills before jumping into a Kanary
since, as the name implies, it _is_ a HOT one! I've test-flown
two of them and they performed identically; verrrry fast with extremely
sensitive control response. I, personally, kinda; like this verrry
crisp performance but it would be a bit much for a newcomer.

744.5 | Watch that rudder..... | CSC32::M_ANTRY | | Mon Oct 31 1988 10:36 | 4 |
| I had a friend who had one and he always had trouble with the tail
wheel, it is just an extension of the rudder. I would opt for a
tail wheel that is attached to the fuse and then coupled to the
rudder with two small cables.

744.6 | a Corsair for fun | MPGS::PERCUOCO | | Tue Nov 22 1988 11:05 | 10 |
| I think I'm gonna get the TOPFLIGHT CORSAIR kit,
mainly just to fly. When I do build a scale
kit for show, I'll look at some of the other
scale kits like BYRONS, etc.... Thanks Al
and Tom for the input. Have a nice Thanksgiving!
The weather here looks like we could get some flying
in over the long weekend!
Enjoy...

744.7 | comments on the Corsair | PNO::CASEYA | THE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8) | Tue Nov 22 1988 18:12 | 23 |
| Tom,
If you go for the Top-Flite Corsair, a number of thing should be
appreciated: 1.) This is probably the truest-to-scale of all the
Top-Flite kits; 2.) 90-degree, rotating retracts are required (unless
you opt for fixed-gear). I recommend the 90-degree Rhom-Air gear,
available from between $100-125; 3.) If built according to the plans,
engine cooling problems are a certainty. Instead of hermetically
sealing the rear of the ring cowl, per the plans, open up the scale
cowl-flaps to provide some exit area for cooling air and baffle
the front of the cowl to duct the air directly past the engine's
cylinder-head.
Other than these comments, the kit builds a very nice bird that
flies well. Again, bear in mind that this ship, at its best, will
be more challenging/less forgiving than any sport ship going. Do
yer' homework well before comitting it to the air!

I f anyone out in RC land doesn't know it...... Topflight Models
has been purchased by Hobbico. Hobbico owns Great Planes and Towers
Hobbies. It's rumored that they purchased the company to get the
machines that make monocote. Seems the investment in new machines
was more expensive than buying the whole company. It's also rumored
that the kit line is to be deleted from topflights offerings however
the design group is supposed to stay on working for Hobbico.

744.9 | P-51 B | GRANMA::WFIGANIAK | YEAH..GET THE RED ONE | Fri Nov 08 1991 09:51 | 7 |
| I got home before the wife yesterday and met the UPS man at the door.
Well she got me the P-51 B kit from Top-Flight for Christmas.
Has anyone had any experience with this one. I wanted the B model
because there are just to many D's around.
Any comments at all?
Thanks Walt
P.S. I can't even open the box until Christmas !!!!

744.10 | Yup! | DIENTE::OSWALD | TANSTAAFL! | Fri Nov 08 1991 12:04 | 15 |
| There's a Mustang note around here somewhere with my thoughts on the kit. I've
converted mine to a D (the mostest beautifullest airplane ever built). I've cut
a foam wing for mine and inserted Spring Air retracts. The quality of the kit is
fair, although definitely stand off scale. The instructions stink. One sheet
of plans about 3x4 feet. Instructions are in about 10 "comic strip" type panels
along the bottom of the plan sheet. The materials are only fair. Mine had a lot
of "balsa" pieces that were darn near as hard and heavy as maple. If you haven't
built a lot of airplanes yet plan on getting a lot of help.
Still and all its a pretty ship and I'm looking forward to finishing mine. I just
spent a week and a half getting the scale inner and outer main gear doors
working. I'm sanding/filling the wing in preparation for glass. I've got a brand
new JR X347 radio for it and I want an OS .61w/pump to power it.

744.11 | In my dreams | GRANMA::WFIGANIAK | YEAH..GET THE RED ONE | Fri Nov 08 1991 15:21 | 14 |
| Randy,Thanks for the quick input. I read through the Mustang file and
it looks like I'll have my hands full (according to your input). As far
as building experience goes I've done tons of stick and tissue,one RC
trainer (Bob Martin ET25) and some RC boats. I have a Gental Lady for
my next project and a Top Flight Kitty Wake sitting on the shelf. I
don't plan on rushing the Mustang at all. I to picked up the Mustang
book from Squadron about a year ago. The center section that has the
side views has one "B" that is in a metal finish with a yellow tail. I
think this one looks great. I must agree that the 'D' is the best
looking but as my Mom once said "dare to be different".
If and when I ever get started on this I'm sure I'll be asking plenty
of questions. I guess it all depends on how long we LAST !
Thanks
Walt
