I just traded my desktop for a NEC Multispeed EL (which I did the Video
accounting on).

Hmmmmmmmm how did all these computer nuts get into the RC notes file?

What I would like is a program to print airfoils and read in the
coordinates in the format they are printed in magazines.  It should
print the rib with allowances for various thickness sheeting/caps
and any cord and any number of ribs to allow for tapered wings.

I'm sure such things exist - but how about in the public domain?

    Like I was saying, you shouldn't have wasted your money on IBM-PC
    type computers.  I own an IMB-PC/XT, but since I purchased a
    Macintosh last Xmas, the IBM really only gets used as a doorstop.

    With my MAC and anyone of a number of Drafting/CAD style programs,
    I can easily plot an airfoil from a list of datapoints.  Having
    done so, I can use the same or a different program to distort the
    airfoil by stretching or compressing it in any direction, or
    reduce/enlarge it by any percentage.  I can print the results on a
    number of different laser printers, and transfer the laser printed
    image to Balsa or Ply with an iron.

    What magazines are you talking about?  I don't remember seeing any
    numbers on airfoils in the mags.  If you can fill me in on details,
    maybe I can come up with a program to print the airfoils on any
    PostScript printer here at DEC.

    This is exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for.

    BTW - does anyone know of any books that publish airfoils _AND_
    their flying characteristics such as lift/drag curves, angle of
    attack/stall speed, etc., etc.????

    FYI - I have an IBM PC at home.

by Ira H Abbott and Albert E. Von Doenoff.
Published by Dover Publications, Inc. New York. No: 0-486-60586-8.

A good reference text with some 300 pages of wing section information.

The second book is "Airfoil Sections". compiled and edited by John Malkin of 
Upper Hutt New Zealand. No publisher is referenced and from the appearance it 
looks as if was a local product only. My guess it would probably be available 
through the NZ Aeromodelling Association.

It has 300 wing sections which it says are ideal for models.

        Model Builder has a monthly "Darned Good Airfoil" series. Copies
        of this include over 100 airfoils, available form Model Builder. 
        
        For sailplanes (and other RC models), the books by Eric Lister
        list numerous coordinates, including the "formula" for most of the
        NACA series. 
        
        I'm still trying to track down the Eppler program.

I don't know how many 347 owners out there have macs but I have a SuperPaint file
that allows the online recording of 347 settings. Basically it's a form in 
stationary format that you can use paint to update/record settings. SuperPaint
will also output in MacPaint format. I just make a copy of the blank form and 
fill it in. I can then update/reprogram a model online or print out a copy to 
stick in my flightbox. I did this because I'm currently flying more than 4 models
and needed an easy way to update/record the settings.

I have an ACRO form and am working on a GLID form. A HELI form wouldn't be too 
much different.

    My Ultra Hots has two elevator servos so I put one into the elevator
    channel and the other into Aux2 (spoiler).  I mixed elevator to aux2
    and the elevator halves move together fine except that the Elevator
    Trim only moves one half!  It looks like I'll have to use a Y cable and
    only one channel to get the trim to move both halves.  This means I
    have to set both halves mechanically - the old way rather than being
    able to take advantage of subtrims.
    	If anyone has any ideas on how to solve this problem, I'd like to
    hear them!

      I am using a similar mix for the 2 throttle servos on my Twin. In this
    application it works great because it allows you to fine tune each servo
    seperately (one with the trin lever, and one with the flap knob).
    However in your case, that is not a desirable quality

Charlie, I think you can do something similar to what Dan is using. Aux2 is on
one of the pots (which you've probably zero'd out). Set the pot to 30% (which
is what the trim pots are supposed to be) and then mix it back to the elevator.
The elevator stick will drive both halves and the aux2 pot will allow you trim 
adjustment of both halves. Once you land you adjust your subtrim the appropriate 
amount! Nothing says that you have to go with 30% but that is what JR says their
trim pots are set for (aileron trim in 4 servo glider wing mode section). 

    Jim,
    	This would work but I would have to trim elevator with a non
    standard trim - not acceptable to me.  I'd rather go with a Y lead and
    lose the capability to electronically adjust the two elevator halves.
    What I want that isn't there is a way to couple two channels and have
    one trim move both.  Unfortunately, the trim does not affect the
    coupled channel. (except with elevon mixing where the aileron trim does
    affect both channels)  Life's a Bitch
