1361.0. "Through the Floor" by HAMPS::LINCOLN_J (Where sheep dare) Mon Feb 18 1991 13:28

There used to be a topic on spiralling car prices, but I
can't find it now. This is a topic about swiftly declining car
prices.

Thumbing through yesterdays Sunday Times I was struck by just
how much things have changed in the last year. Nowadays one senses
a feeling of desperation amongst those trying to get rid of
their 'investments', and a healthy attitude of trying to undercut
the other man to grab the elusive buyer.

A few examples -

MX5 - If you payed over the odds for one of these ugly things
last year it won't help to know that you can now get 10% of a new
one.

Lotus Elan - It seems that everyone who ever bought one of these
wants to sell it. Already gaining a reputation for poor
reliability this hideous model now comes discounted.

NSX - want to be the first to have an NSX. You can be for 72,000,
but wait there's another one at 60,000, and at 54,000 and even
52,500. Wonder how much anyone will really pay.

Classic investments are very much into the hefty depreciation
mode, particularly those that cost oodles to maintain/restore.
Best get rid of it if you can, quick.

Ferraris are way way down, but at least this means that a few
genuine enthusiasts may get them. 308s in the 30,000 bracket
and still descending. More exotic examples are anybodys guess.
1 million for an F40, Ok say 900K, allright, allright 600K,
but you're taking the shirt off my back. If you believe this
hype you can become rich, there was an F40 at 250K.

1361.2Hope investors go broke...CHEFS::COLEMANMMon Feb 18 1991 16:4315
It's nice to see some justice at last ......

I stopped buying Supercar Classics etc. etc. because it made me too
depressed ....... I remember, back in 1980, trying to justify 6,500
for a late '76 308 GT4, rust and all, just because it was a Ferrari.

Seeing people asking 50,000 squids for these 'icons' last year was just
too much. I hope all these 'investors' lose chunks of money and never
mess around with cars again.

When a Mondial 8 gets down to around 16k ...... maybe I'll finally
succumb (sp?)

I'm interested in your comments on the new Lotus. I'm still vaguely
thinking about buying one (nice little roadster is ideal for the Cte
d'Azur ...) so everything you hear about prices, reliability is top
info for me. Thanks in advance.

Or an Alfa Romeo Spider .... Not that I'm biased, either. :-)

PS - The valuation on the E-type I sold last July is down by over 30%. Think I
might be about ready to buy another .... :-)

Declining car prices is a sore point with me, I'm departing with my 2 yr old
SRi for a mere 6640 this afternoon (32,000, 1yr warranty, 6mths tax, good
condition), 2yrs ago I bought it for 11500!

1361.8Depreciation is very high on new carsJANUS::BARKERJeremy Barker - T&N/CBN Diag. Eng. - Reading, UKWed Feb 20 1991 11:4312
Re: .7

If you need to have a new car the lease scheme is pretty reasonable.

If you are happy to have a car that is not new, then it is generally more
expensive (as it only deals in new cars).

The depreciation incurred in the first few days that the car is driven on
the road is disproportionately high. The rate of depreciation falls
significantly after the car is a year or two old.

As a comparison my 1.9 205 is now 2yrs 1month old and 30,000 miles.
List was 11,500 then but I paid 10,000. I don't know really but
I'd reckon to get over 7000 for it now. Sporty cars generally
hold their price better because there's more private buyer interest
in them. Apparently the old MR2 was/is the lowest depreciating
new car around.

re.7: >Maybe the lease scheme isn't so bad after all.

Depends on mileage and changes of circumstance. In my case, enforced
relocation to the Solent office from The Crescent blew my budget for
depreciation due to mileage.
