Re speed, Is notes given a low priority on Marvin??.

Slow ? I find this one of the _fastest_ notes files that I access

| This conf does seem slower than usual today. Is it anything to do with last
night's power-down in areas of DP2?

It's been slow all this week. It used to take (from SBP) a second from
'op c' to seeing the first pasge displayed. Now i'm looking at
10+ seconds. The same with UK_DIGITAL (also on Marvin).
Once connection has been made then the reponse is as it was.
Other nodes around the world have the same response time so it can't be
SBP.

its not that bad from here (Newbury)
below are the times it took (two runs) to open Notes confs
on a number of UK nodes.. the average for Marvin seems to be about
8 seconds.... and an average of 5 seconds for RDGENG
run (1)
Node MARVIN , time 00:00:05.33 (CARS_UK conference )
Node BURYST , time 00:00:02.31 (The DIY box )
Node BURYST , time 00:00:02.71 (European Ask the Easynet )
Node LESLIE , time 00:00:04.20 (Newbury and its denizens )
Node RDGENG , time 00:00:04.18 (Reading 'bout Reading )
Node UKCSSE , time 00:00:05.45 (Couch_Potato_UK )
Node MARVIN , time 00:00:05.15 ( Matters Relevant to Digital)
run (2)
Node MARVIN , time 00:00:09.90 (CARS_UK conference )
Node BURYST , time 00:00:04.23 (The DIY box )
Node BURYST , time 00:00:04.55 (European Ask the Easynet )

Couch_Potato_UK is on TIMMII, not UKCSSE. i.e. it's on an RD54 on
a VS2000, with a search list for the notes library.
Given that, these response times are impressive when compared to
the bigger fish such as MARVIN & RDGENG.

Ok, but it is definitely slower than it used to be, and it is
by your figures the slowest node in the UK.
Euro_motoring on TIMMII is a couple of seconds
( as are conferences in Ferney...)

1222.8 | MARVIN runs DECnet Phase V | JANUS::BARKER | Jeremy Barker - T&N/CBN Diag. Eng. - Reading, UK | Fri Sep 14 1990 00:39 | 7 |
| MARVIN is in network area 1. Area 1 is used for testing Phase V DECnet,
and it could be that they have changed something in the routers.
Given that it's been running on pre-Field Test for several months I think
it a tribute to our Engineering people that access is as good as it is.

1222.9 | The Marvin Cluster and Phase V. | MARVIN::RUSLING | Hastings Upper Layers | Fri Sep 14 1990 10:40 | 16 |

You're right Marvin is in area 1 and is partitioned from Area 42 by
two pairs of Phase V MicroServer Routers running inter-Phase links
to the Marvin cluster (still Phase IV). Additionally, area 42 is now
also Phase V. Phase V isn't in itself slower, but translating back
and forth between Phase IV and Phase V is. In the past, we've also
run slower synchronous protocol links between area 1 and area 42 as
part of our testing. Additionally, we have an awful lot of development
routers all running and exchanging LSPs every time a sparrow coughs on
the network, so our network traffic is *very* high.
The Marvin cluster is also pretty heavily loaded, with one member out
(running the latest VMS stuff for compilations against DECnet-VAX
baselevels.

| Thanks for taking the time to give such a clear explanation.
As a follow-up, might it not be a good idea to find a new home for
MARVIN's public notes files? This would ease your network load, too.
Jeff.

| re. 12 (and I aplogise for the rathole now!)
Why not make use of CD? There are several CD distribution points
around, and it saves the network...
And the ConDist CD is cheap (About $150 internally), the CD players are
cheap, and you also get the SSB kits for lots and lots of products as
well! Then you can also get the CD documentation disk, and give your
workstations users access to the latest on-line bookreader
documentation as well....
Anyway, I reckon it's a good idea to leave this file on MARVIN; a volume
test on phase V seems a good idea to me....

re phase V.
Don't you think that all this is degenerating to Star Trek levels ...
Spock : partition Area 42 by two pairs of Phase V MicroServer Routers
running inter-Phase links to the Marvin cluster (still Phase IV).
Scotty: Aye, but weeve gottta run slowerr synchronous protocol links
between area 1 and area 42 as part of our testing. Additionally, we
have an awful lot of development routers all running and exchanging LSPs
every time a sparrow coughs on the network. She canna tek it capn, shes

Kirk : Well do the best you can, and fix the sonic wipers in trap three
as the klingon problem is getting unbearable .....
