972.0. "1990 road works to avoid." by HEWIE::RUSSELL (I should have got a Duracell!!) Tue Feb 27 1990 18:58

    Advance warning for anyone contemplating driving on the
    M1/M25 in the next couple of months:

    M1 between J8 and J9 will have major roadworks starting March 5th
    until end of May for resurfacing/etc. They may also put a crawler
    lane in south of J9... This is between Hemel Hempstead and the
    Whipsnade turn-offs. Use the A1 or A5 as alternatives.

    M25 between J18 and J20 starting on 12th March until June.
    This the bit between Watford and M40 interchange.
    Alterntives : there aren't really any...

    I'd strongly recommend avvoiding these bits of motorway during peak
    times (say 00:01 to 23:59...) if at all possible.

    Peter (who travels on both bits to get to work, and
    			 will be coming cross-country instead!)

972.1and in Newbury...SWEEP::ALFORDFantasy is the reality of life...Wed Feb 28 1990 11:177

    On the same note....

    The Robin Hood Roundabout, A4 A34 junction, is undergoing major
    digging work.

    Havoc is to be expected, especially during rush-hours.
972.2are they still there?64580::LINDLEYStrewth mate.....Wed Feb 28 1990 12:0910
    Can anyone tell me if the following roadworks are still ongoing:-

    a) on the M18 at the A1 Junction

    b) on the A1 between the M18 and Wetherby

    Cheers,

    John
972.3Beware NewburyVANILA::LINCOLNThe sun has got his hat onWed Feb 28 1990 12:489
	The Robin Hood roundabout improvements at Newbury have started.
	Queues are already bigger than they were and so far they've
	just put some cones and things up. It's expected to last 9 weeks!.

	Last week, half term, I was getting to Newbury site from Reading
	in 30 mins. This week with normal schools and RH congestion added
	it's taking over an hour.

There are numerous roadworks on the A1, but I assume you are particularly
refering to the old roundabout at Leeds, south oF Wetherby? This is now
just about finished and traffic flows a lot freer - until the next contraflow.

The A1/M18 was OK a few weeks ago when I drove through.

972.5OK for me :-)NEARLY::GOODENOUGHWed Feb 28 1990 20:444
    Re: .3 Robin Hood is no problem if you commute out of Newbury. It's
    only those poor suckers commuting *in* that are affected.

    The sooner a bypass/flyover is built the better for everyone...

    especially me as a commuter trying to get through Newbury :-)

    The North/South bypass isn't expected to be finished 'till 199bl**dy3!

    And even that won't solve the fact that the only East/West Route
    that is used by people trvelling to newbury to then go south is
    the A4.......What's needed is a route that would connect the pinchinton
    Lane roundabout with the A4 just east of Thatcham. Slough sounds
    a good place to put it to me.......
972.8New way into DECpark?VOGON::DAWSONTurn ignition on - Turn brain off!Fri Mar 02 1990 07:466
    Did you hear that work is soon to start on the "Basingstoke Road Relief
    Road" or whatever they call it? A flyover over the M4 just west of the
    existing roundabout and a new road into Reading round the back of
    DECpark. Sounds like an area to avoid for the next 18-24 months!

972.9Not only that but...MARVIN::RUSLINGMicroServer Phase V Session ControlFri Mar 02 1990 09:424
Along with that work, have you heard that they are making the M4 four laned in
both directions all the way to Swindon and lighting all the way the junction 12?

    ...but there is nothing wrong with the M4 west of Junction 12...

    it's a perfectly good motorway with only three lanes (except on friday
    nights....) and I can't see how anyone can justify the expense for just
    friday nights !

    Apart from accidents, the volume of traffic is perfectly within
    tolerances, until of course you meet all those half asleep personages
    who drift onto the motorway at J12 <grrrrrrrrrr>

    Now a couple of "A" road class lanes alongside the motorway for the
    junction hoppers would be a good idea...
972.11Cynical of D4SIEVAX::CORNEPosition IndependentFri Mar 02 1990 10:367
I doubt if 4 lanes on the M4 would help. Most nights between J12 & J13 the
left lane is almost empty and the other lanes nose to tail, but going at the
same speed as the occasional truck in the left lane. One more lane would just
give the trucks two lanes to themselfs instead of one. The "overtaking" lane
would still be nose to tail.

972.12I know it's all been said before, but...IOSG::MITCHELLElaineFri Mar 02 1990 10:458

    re -1, I agree, things would flow a lot better if people used all
    three lanes _properly_ , and werent so paranoid about the idea of
    letting other cars move into their lane in front of them, so that they
    can overtake the lorries in the left lane.

    but just think....what would the CLOCs do with *2* middle lanes ???

    :-)
972.14JUMBLY::DAYNo Good Deed Goes UnpunishedFri Mar 02 1990 11:024
    No problem re .13 . They'd drive straight down the lane marker line
