WEST. Acts expressing an interest include WET WET WET, THE CULT,

re. last - Donnington
For the date check Kerrang and/or Metal Hammer.
I *believe* the confirmed headliners are Iron Maiden and with David
Lee Roth guesting. There is an unconfirmed rumor flying around that
Kiss will be special guests)
Anyone know who else is attending??? - Is the Kiss apearance confirmed
yet??? - Anybody out there going (I went to last years and it was
bril - I was well impressed with how Dio performed their new [well,
its now oldish] material from their Dream Evil album).
Also - at the end of Dung Jovi's (surprisingly good) performance,
Paul Stanley, Bruce Dickinson and Dee Snider (sp?) came on and jammed
through a few numbers :-)
Great atmosphere - but the beer tasted like ants p***...
Burgers were like chocolate buttons...
Hot dogs were the size of a Cockerspainiel's d*ck...
But worth every penny :-)

19.14 | Nelson Mandela Update | FORTY2::WATKINS | Get Down Shep!!! | Wed Apr 13 1988 18:06 | 20 |
| The EURYTHMICS and CHRISSIE HYNDE are the latest acts to be confirmed
for the Nelson Mandela concert. The organizers are also hoping to confirm
George Michael for the show.
The Mandela Mega Bash will be the Eurythmics' first live show since
the Revenge tour in late 1986 and will be their only live show in Britain
this year.
Chrissie Hynde will be doing a special set with Sly 'n' Robbie, she
will not be playing with the Pretenders.
Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Connolly have also been added to the bill
as co-hosts to Harry Belaforte.
BBC TV and Radio 1 are linking up to provide extensive coverage of the
show through out the day. It is not yet clear how much time will be
given over broadcasting the event though BBC2 controller Alan Yentob
has already drawn comparisons with the Beeb's coverage of Live Aid.

FYI Johnny's real name is not LOGAN so he's not the real Mc Coy,

I listened to "People" the HHF's new album last week and very much
enjoyed it. It's interesting to see that the album is only available

and the album cover will be different.

Last night I was out on the town with the lead singer of the amazingly

In October the Leeds Queens Hall is due to shut down and be

to reproduce on of the 'Futurerama' events that was held there back
in the 60's. Mick told me that it would be in a festival format
and could last 2 days. The bands he mentioned were The Inspiral
Carpets, Happy Mondays, The Wedding Present James and The Fall.
He also told me that he'd heard a rumour that it could well be
the last live gig that the Fall will play.
I didn't belive him...I told him so and he replied...O.K. but I
should know, we are gonna be playing.
Good point.

| Well he wasn't having me on....The event was to be the 29th and
30th of Sept and the 1st of Oct. It would have included approximatly
30 bands. Some good stuff on the Saturday - Birdland and an unannounced
headliner...which was going to be either the Happy Mondays or The
Wedding Present. Sunday sounded great...all the best British indie
pop bands including...The Man From Delmonte, The Blue Aeroplanes,
New Fast Automatic Daffodils, Inspiral Carpets and LOADS
more...headliners were James and The Fall.
Why the past tense? Well for some stupid inexplicable the Leeds
city council has decided not to allow the license for the event
to go through. Christ I was looking forward to that.
Time to ring up and complain.

| U2 have announced six nights in the Point Depot Dublin just after
Christmas, tickets are 20.50 and 25.50. They go on sale in mid-November
Rumours abound that they were going to perform a free gig in the
Phoenix Park Dublin on New Years Eve, that looks doubtful now, if ever
it seemed possible.
Ireland suffers from a strange disease called "I heard U2 are playing
here tonight", the only known and reliable cure is twenty Mary
O'Haras for a ticket.

| .132 -< I agree Ed, but it's Thatcher's Britain now. >-
So when did Dublin become part of Maggie'e Farm again? ;-)
As for the IR25 a ticket...this is too much and I think 5 hours
of U2(or anybody's) music to be *over-doing-it*(just a bit).
Already the Irish papers are getting letters from U2 fans complaining
about the price. And I agree with most of the points raised...eg.
A lot of the fans in Dublin and around the country are unemployed
and can't be expected to spend over 50% of their dole money just
to buy the ticket alone. Most U2 fans would be in the 18 to 25
age bracket...and this age bracket also make up the bulk of the
Irish unemployment figure. Also at Christmas people can ill afford
to pay...what with all the other expenses that this so called Christian
festival brings.!!!
Seeing that Bono and the boys played 'Self Aid' concert some years
back to help the unemployed...it's a bit odd they allowed such a
price for tickets...we could see a rethink on this one from the
lads...if not I can see the press having a field day out of this.

| U2 are quite entitled to charge whatever they like. Nobody is being forced to
go. Although it may not be the greatest way to thank your fans, the band isn't
a charity. Don't forget that that the capacity of the Point Depot is something
like 4500. This is like watching the band in a pub, as opposed to seeing them
from miles away in a mega stadium. You might pay more (which is presumably only
to cover their costs (and Adam's 25 grand? :-)), but you get a lot more
for your money.
--Patrick--
ps presumably the five hours is partly BB King. Yes, five hours of U2 is more
than enough (five minutes would be about right!)

| Just received a letter from Martine - Manager of James....
The new album "Gold Mother" is due for release early next year.
The following are the dates of gigs during the Autumn...
*September 28th - C.N.D. Benifit (with The Band Of Holy Joy) - London
Town & Country Club 2
*October 1st - Futurama - Bradford Palace (More Later)
November 18th - Strathclyde University
* 22nd - Newcastle Riverside
* 23rd - Sheffield Poly (Octagon Theatre)
24th - Birmingham Hummingbird
25th - Liverpool University
27th - Cambridge Corn Exchange
28th - London Town & Country Club
29th - Southampton University
30th - Bristol Bierkeller
December 2nd - Nottingham Trent Poly
* 4th - Manchester Apollo
* 5th - Hull Tower Ballroom
6th - Leicester University
* 7th - Leeds Poly
* - I'll be there!
Tickets are selling at the stunningly cheap prices of 7 pounds for
the C.N.D. Benifit....9 pounds for the Futurama gig (with the Fall
and about 12 other indie groups) and 5 pounds for each of the Nov/Dec
dates.
The other good news is Futurama has found a new location.
Those jolly people on Leeds council had decided not to allow the
concert to go ahead in 'their' town because they 'didn't want long
haired youths running around the city centre.' Oh and they 'haddn't
heard of any of the bands that were playing'.
But then...a light! Rumours wizzed around....somewhere in
Bradford...St. Georges Hall????
Last weeks Leeds Weekly news announced the relocation of Friday
and Saturdays shows to Bradford Palace and they had just about secured
Sunday too.
Sad about the Queens Hall being demolished without a send off though.

A free gig in London looks set to go ahead this summer, possibly July
28th, Clapham Common.
The line is not to bad - The Mission, The Wonderstuff, The Cure, and
Morrissey (!?!?!?!?). Matter of fact, the line up looks
brilliant!! - Buy air flight tickets now, Ed.

Mikef,
is this lineup "offical"/reliable? If so then Ed might not be the only
person flying. My experience with freebie gigs is that you can't always rely
upon certain bands being there. Could you supply more info as it becomes
available.
Thanks,
-Brian.

Glasgow Barrowlands (October 25)
Liverpool Royal Court (October 26)

London Brixton Academy (October 31)

Tickets are ludicrously expensive, except for the London gigs, which are even
more ludicrously expensive.
Anybody musicians out there listened closely to the Cocteau's music? It's dead
simple stuff. It's the effects that really make them worth anything, that and
the singer, blah blah blah...

Apparently this is his only European concert this year -
obviously it will be open air due to the venue:-)and Prince and
the New Power Generation are expected to start performing
early evening - however it seems that the grounds will open
early as there will be a fun fair, performing clowns and other
artistes moving among the crowd. Tickets are 29.00 pounds but
this is purely for the Prince concert it doesn't include the
fun fair etc.
Tickets are available through Controversy Fanzine - the official
Prince fan club - I have the address at home and will bring it in
tomorrow if anyone wants it.
Personally I think the price is too high - I'm not a great fan
of open air concerts - and although he's my main man - I won't
be forking out 29 pounds to see his Purpleness.

It's sad but true. The Velvet Underground are reforming and playing
two nights at the Edinburgh Playhouse on June 1-2. Tickets 16 & 18
with London dates to follow.
Is this shameful or what? I remember first listening to `Andy Warhol'
and thinking what a great band they were, and it was a shame that they
were around so long ago. Now that they resurface in an age where
there's more nostalgia than creativity, it stinks.
And just what's the gig going to be like? There's grumpy old Lou Reed
with his Kev. Keegan perm telling us that Heroin is `his wife and his
life'? I think not.
Rant gibber splutter etc...

Both John Cale and Lou Reed have been recently creating and not rehashing, even
collaborating on a new piece only two years ago. So what makes you think that
any reunion concert automatically means that Lou Reed will sing "Heroin"?
You're assuming that the reformed Velvets would play a greatest hits show
because that's what their fans want. Well, not all groups are so craven.
To use a more recent example, Sonic Youth almost never plays anything older than
their previous album. Sure, VU is not SY and VU's second latest album would
have been released circa 1970, but the point is that not all bands feel
obliged to trot out warhorses, appropriate or otherwise.
So, VU may still play oldies and Lou Reed may indeed sing "Heroin", proving
me wrong, but as a serious band, I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

>> Sorry - I've never even heard of Louth Festival before! (I can't even
me neither ! I suspect a lot of folks who usually just organise small
local festivals are taking advantage of a 'Glastonbury free' year, and
trying to make their events a bit bigger and further reaching,
something which my local 'Leek arts festival' has tried and failed at
before and didn't have the funds for this year %^/
Still, 'Louth' has better ring to it than 'Phoenix' and I bet it's not
being held on an airfield %^)

| I'll chase up some details...I have a feeling that louth is tthe town
which the map in my diary shows as 'Lough', a little south of
'Humderside'.

| This diary has two - Lough and Humderside. I could be sad and scan for
others if I get really bored this afternoon...

There is a Louth in Lincolnshire and there is also part of Eire, north
of Dublin which has the same name.
