101.0. "Musclecar Combinations" by IAMOK::FISHER () Fri Feb 26 1993 08:40

I occured to me the other day that there was a tremendous
variety of Musclecars produced from 1960-1974. The combinations
of engines and bodystyles is staggering. For example, I wouldn't
consider base engined (351w 2v) `69 Cougars to be Musclecars, but
Mercury offered the following performance oriented engines and
    bodystyles;

    1. Eliminator Boss 302 290 HP
    2. Eliminator 351W 4V 290 HP
    3. Eliminator 390 4V 320 HP
    4. Eliminator 428 CJ 4V 335 HP (yeah, riiiight)
    5. Eliminator 428 CJ 4V RA 335 HP
    6. Eliminator 428 SCJ 4V 335 HP
    7. Eliminator 428 SCJ 4V RA 335 HP
    8. Eliminator 427 4V 390 HP (Allegedly one built)
    9. Eliminator 429 4V BOSS 375 HP (Allegedly 2-3 built)
    10.XR-7 351W 4V 290 HP
    11.XR-7 390 4V 320 HP
    12.XR-7 428 CJ 4V 335 HP
    13.XR-7 428 CJ 4V RA 335 HP
    14.XR-7 428 SCJ 4V 335 HP
    15.XR-7 428 SCJ 4V RA 335 HP
    16.CJ HARDTOP 428 CJ 4V 335 HP
    17.CJ HARDTOP 428 CJ 4V RA 335 HP
    18.CJ HARDTOP 428 SCJ 4V 335 HP
    19.CJ HARDTOP 428 SCJ 4V RA 335 HP

Here are 19 different 1969 Cougar performance oriented combinations.
You can surmise that if all early Cougar model years were considered,
there could easily be 50+ performance oriented combinations!

I'd like to compile a list of these combinations by Marque and model,
and get a rough sizing for just how many different musclecars were
    available from 1960-74.

For simplicity, lets call a musclecar any vehicle with an enhanced
performance engine, 2 doors, and a performance image..

    Tom,

I obtained all the detail info on '67 Firebirds from Pontiac
Historic services. You can have a copy of that.

    Tom,
I have a book at home that lists all of the Ford musclecars from
early to mid sixties up to early 70 and give the different engine
options and body and interior options they all came with. It even
lists such options as cruise control or a/c and tells which engines
were avaiable with a/c and which ones weren't. If you want a copy of
it let me know and I could meet up with you soemtime and let you have
it for a while. I live right in Nashua so it wouldn't be much of a
drive for either one of us.

Is this paragraph one of the above, or all of the above? If you say
all of the above, I can think of several that would be disqualified by
only having 2 doors, but would most definately be considered musclecars
    by anyone who saw them.

One I can think of off the top of my head is the Dodge Polaris.

............wouldn't that be the Dodge "Polara", rather than "Polaris"?

We've been down this "What is a musclecar?" rathole before, but, just to make
the point, there were a bunch of 4-door 409s and 406s around back in the early
'60s.

Didn't Chrysler build a 4 door slammer a few years ago that would
dust most of the big motored cars of yesterday?

They had the Dodge Omni GLH (Goes Like H@#$) that was pretty quick.
I remember seeing one at NE Dragway on a Wednesday night (several
years ago) that took care of 2 IROC Camaros and a 340 `cuda. I
enjoyed seeing the IROCs get dusted, but.....

101.9Rathole alert?SANTEE::AUGENSTEINTue Apr 06 1993 07:5616
I didn't realize that you could get a hemi in a 4-door Chrysler product.

Neat.

On a visit to West Virginia back in the early sixties, I noticed a *bunch*
of RPO 406 and 409 4-door sedans around. Turns out that was the standard family
hot rod configuration for the area. I even saw a couple of police cars in this
configuration. No doubt the cops felt they had to fight fire with fire :-).

Re the Omni GLH:

No flames, but it probably qualifies about as well as a '66 Mustang does as a
musclecar. The limited production GLHS qualifies (from an acceleration
standpoint) better than 4 out of 5 traditional musclecars would.

FWIW, I don't consider the GLH to be a musclecar, I simply responded to
a reply a few back. That one I saw at Epping was quite impressive.
Equally impressive was the "Big Block Shovette". Another musclecar 8^)

101.11Does a Musclecar just go fast?MSD26::WOJDAKTue Apr 06 1993 12:205
Yeah, but that OMNI is not going to be getting many looks when you
cruise the beach in the summer. On the otherhand, the girls just love
    those old Mustangs.8^)

    FWIW MHO etc.

When I hear the word Muscle car it conjures up images of mostly
pre 73 two doors with big sneakers in the rear, a V8 and the ever
popular (at least with me ) tire smoking ability. Mostly pre 73
because there are some psot 73 cars that would fit the bill. An
example would be the late 70s 6.6 liter T/As. Course if we go by
the previous definition I'll add the VW note and start boring
everybody with incessant chatter about what a great musclecar my
GTI is and of course the girls still stare atme and not the car when
drive by (I'll have to stop driving with my head out the sunroof if
thats gonna stop though :-) )

Apparently my intent has been misconstrued. I'm not trying to
redefine the Musclecar, but identify all of the variants on the theme.
If this includes 4 door Hemis, 409's, and 406's then great.

I was hoping others could post lists of other musclecar combinations.
However, I can easily see this list growing into the thousands.

Perhaps it's not a practical question.
