| Tom,
Good luck in your search for a used head. When I had the heads
redone in my truck the shop found the normal cracks around the
exhaust valve seats. 400 small block heads are hard to find and
even harder if you want good ones. My search took place all over
New England, maybe you'll have better luck in Co. What I ended
up doing was using 350 heads, the only difference is the steam holes
in the 400 heads. The shop just drilled the steam holes in the new
350 heads and I was in business. This was on a '78 400 small block,
you should have the same flexibility (I think) on a '69/'70, it
might even be cheaper finding a set of 350 heads than finding a
good 400 head. FWIW

I checked my spare part collection this weekend, and the 400 heads that

| Chris,
There is a company called Classic Camaro located in California. I've
never ordered anything from them, but have their catalog and it's
loaded with all kinds of parts. Of course, you have to pay postage on
the parts..so I use a local dealer Jack Hoover's Camaro Classics out of
Fitchburg MA.. and his prices are very good... I always compare them to
the catalog.. and I don't have to pay shipping.
Anyways, Classic Camaro has original & reproduction parts going back to
67 (I'm currently restoring a 67 camaro convertible).

27.40 | Racin' costs $$$$ - How fast ya want to spend? | NWTIMA::BERRYDO | When the green flag drops... | Tue Feb 21 1995 09:38 | 45 |
|
Mark,
Those axles are in demand and bring big $$$ because of their width. Why
not consider a 12 bolt out of a wider car like a Impalla or Caprice since
you will have to do some welding work on it anyway. Here is what it
takes to make a 12 bolt live with slicks and a big block;
Aftermarket axles - Do not get 28 splines. 35 is good, 40 is better
Axle retention devices - The ends of the housing need to be cut off to
install. Easy to do in a lathe when narrowing.
Spool - Buy at the same time as the axles with the same # of splines.
Billet caps - The stock cast iron caps are not up to the task. These
must be custom fitted to your housing. Available from Mark
Williams.
Welding - The tubes must be welded to the center section or they will
twist out the spot welds. If you plan on using ladder bars or
welding anything else onto the tubes - do it all at once. The welding
process causes warpage which must be corrected by cutting the ends
off and realigning them.
Gears - Use Pro gears for racing only. DO NOT use for the street -
ever! If the car will see street use (won't be fun with a spool)
use street gears.
Total bill
Spool $230
Axles $380
Safety Hubs $130
Billet Caps $120
Machine Work $60
Welding $400
Gear Setup $175
________________________
total $1,495
This is still about $1,000 cheaper than a similar 9 inch ford and
weighs less too!
If your serious about racing on a 12 bolt, don't try to do it in
stages. It will cost you a LOT more in the long run (is that the voice
of experience I hear?). Use only top quality parts and first class
labor. Cheap can = BIG $$$$.
