632.40 | Wire to sender unit corroded | KAOFS::M_COTE | Management Challenged | Tue Mar 25 1997 13:41 | 22 |
|
On Saturday, after a long day of helping friends move, my '93 Nissan
Truck would not start. A little T/S pointed to fuel problems. On
a hunch, I knelt down beside the fuel tank and felt around the
fuel sender unit. Found a disconnected wire, with only remnants
of what used to be a connector of some type. I went back in the
morning expecting to have to drop the gas tank on these peoples
driveway. Once actually under the truck, I would see where the wire
connected. It appears to be almost a small metal wafer to which some
type of connector was somehow attached. As the view/position was
bad [and I was cold] I really wasn't able to see what I had
to work with. I ended up slipping down to RadioShack and picking
up some test leads w/ alligator clips.This got me home, and has
kept the truck on the road. Nissan informs me I can't just buy a
connector.
Nissan wants to sell me a complete SENDER unit and charge me HUNDREDS
of dollars. [yeah right!] I'm not sure the best fix. I'm thinking
of crimping on an o-ring onto the wire, drilling a small hole into the
wafer and using a small brass screw to connect the o-ring/wire.
Has anyone been down this road before? Advise welcome :-)

632.41 | same metal, or more corrosion | CPEEDY::BRADLEY | Chuck Bradley | Wed Mar 26 1997 17:52 | 7 |
| if the cause is really corrosion, be careful what metals you use
when reattaching the wire. each place where different metals
come in contact will corrode. one metal will accumulate deposits
and one will be eaten away. if you have to have different metals,
make the wire side be the one that gets eaten away, and preserve the
tank. i don't recall which x eats y eats z, but look up electromotive
series in any chemistry book.
