510.44 | gas tank sealer | APACHE::KEITH | Dr. Deuce | Fri Feb 21 1997 13:11 | 8 |
| Does anyone know of the least expensive place to buy/order gas tank
sealer? One of my water trailers is incontinent and to seal it to just
above the frame rails (which is where the majority of the leaks are in
an unweldable spot) will require a fair amount. This is to be the hot
water (now that I have a gasoline imersion heater for it) trailer for
showers.

KREME....Thats the stuff. Its available at nearly every motorcycle
shop. Problem is, How are you going to slosh it around? Turn the tank
upside-down and what not? Kreme is the ultimate sealer because it
becomes chemically inert once hardened and is even suitable for
drinking water. I just can't figure how you would do it.

| Thanks for the reply
The plan (to be tested with water 1st to see if I can actually do it
this way) is to connect lunette on the water buffalo to pintle hitch on
deuce (it rotates 360 degrees). Take bomb truck (looks like wrecker)
and use it to lift the back end via chains to the spring shackels.
Remove the wheels to make it easer to rock back and forth and use the
bomb truck winch to raise and lower the back end to get front to back
coverage.

| Be careful of the gas tank sealer from the m/c shops. Some of them
require the metal in the tank to be completely clean of rust, total bare
metal. I'm not sure if the stuff John mentioned is like that or not.
I have used the sealer from Bill Hirsch in NJ (look in Hemmings.) It's
about $20/qt which is enough for around 2 20 gallon tanks. You don't
have to get all the rust out, just the big flakes. I've used this on the
gas tanks for the '24 Stude, '71 VW and '58 Isetta.

| This tank definately has scale in it. I was planning on tourching out
the baffle so that I could pressure wash the inside or alternatively
put some Black Beauty and some water in it and go 4 wheeling with it.
That did wonders with the Alu one...

| Slosh the tank first with an etching solution then slosh it with the sealer
.
Go to your local airport and befriend one of the mechanics.
My kid brother (the FAA inspector) got me a load of it in '75 to do that 53
gallon tank in my '34. It came from Barnes airport in Wastefield.

| I've found a very good sloshing compound at Brittish Auto in Manchester
at the rotary near Lake Massebesic. I think it was $12 a quart. It's
a good deal for a good product. I believe that these Brittish Auto
places are a fanchise so they're might be one closer to where you are.
