| Another year, another round of the NCAA scoring contest... same rules
as last year. Every entry that does not have Glenn Robinson on will
get 10 bonus points :-) (just kidding)

Select eight (8) players from DIFFERENT teams. Score is calculated by
total points scored in the tournament by all eight players. For a
tiebreaker, guess the number of points scored by your team.
Notes:
1) Remember, only one player from eachteam
2) Position doesn't matter (because I'm not going to have enough
time to resolve the disputes) but it would be nice if
you tried to use 3 guards, 3 forwards, and 2 centers.
3) All entries must be mailed to me at DUGROS::ROSS by noon on
Thursday. No entries will be accepted after that.

| The way I will score this is:
1 pt for each team correctly predicted into round 2
2 pts for each team correctly predicted into Sweet 16
3 pts for each team correctly predicted into Elite 8
4 pts for each team correctly predicted into final 4
5 pts for each team correctly predicted into finals
6 pts for winner
Maximum of 120 points. Contestants will be listed by points.
I will try to post current totals as often as possible,but please be
considerate.

| I have heard of some pools where there are three contests:
One for the first two rounds then you predict the sweet 16 matchups
then the final four. This is more simple although it does make for a
lot of later games that you have no interest in because both of your
predicted teams are out.

| First day results: Only MTWAIN::Burrows was 13-3.
There are large crowds at 12-4 and 11-5. Almost everyone was perfect on
the top four seeds. Only two people had Alabama over Providence,only 2
had Wisconsin over Cincinnati,amazing since these were 8-9 games.
Only 2 people had WGB over Cal. Most had Penn winning. The other game
lots of people missed was Md-USL. A very bad day if you went with the
Great Midwest Conference which was 0-3. Most had GW.There were a lot of
perfect scores in the East and Midwest. Only King and Burrows were
perfect in the SouthEast. Only Burrows,Whitehair,Sweeney,King,Honer(Who
had WGB!) and Waugaman were 3-1 in the upset marred West.
And nobody had Pepperdine.

I saw the first half though, and Liberty was doing well against UNC.
The men in red played their hearts out.
The bunch of guys I was with (at lunch) agreed that it seems that these
lower seeds in the tourney always seem to have good defense, but don't
always have a potent offense to go with it, to keep up with the big boys.

Five players picked Tulsa,two picked BC. Honer,Burrows,King,Erickson,Whitehair

region. All the chokes of the previous years(Syracuse,Missouri and Arizona)
are playing great. All year I said that Dean Smith's insistence on playing his

| You're right Glenn. If I had time I would have added final 8 and final
2 pick columns. Some of the players further down can move up
dramatically while a player such as Whitehair,who is tied for
first,is already wrong on every game he picked NC to win(4 future
games,no chance for 18 possible points 3 + 4 + 5 + 6).
The players who picked NC must root for BC to make the final 4 along
with Tulsa,Marquette and Syracuse.
If form prevails and UCONN,Duke,Ark and Mizzou are in the final 4 then
those with UMASS,UK or UNC predicted are dead.

It's consistency. all year I had said UNC could not win the way Smiff
was miscoaching this bunch. But as I was filling out my selections,I
had Dicky V on in the background and I started to think how can
Carolina lose with all this talent. I got suckered in by the conference
tournament results.
As I watched the final minutes against BC,I was almost positive the
Heels would lose and it was fitting they lost the way they did.
I got so down on teams that had bad conference tourneys and so high on
teams that won. Oh well,there's always nexted year.

| Hal Whitehair has clinched first place with the final four yet to be played.
Even though Erickson could get 74 points if Arkansas wins,Whitehair also
has the Razorbacks. Whitehair's victory was accomplished even though he picked
North Carolina to win the title. He was perfect on the other three regions.
There were four crucial games over the weekend that had a major swing on the
standings. Florida's upset of Uconn wiped out all those who had UConn,including
three who had them to win it all. Duke's victory over Purdue stopped two that
had the Boilermakers to win. Michigan's loss destroyed Murphy's hopes.
Lousiville's loss to Arizona wiped out 2 who picked the Cards to win it all.
Nobody picked Florida. Even though they were second seeds,Arizona and Duke had
hardly any takers. Louisville was the most popular pick in the West,while
Purdue and Kentucky were the major votegetters in the Southeast. UNC and UConn
in the East with one BC paced the East and Arkansas and UMass(remember them)
split the Midwest.

| Again I have risked the ire of many to check out how "the monkey" did.
Way back in hs physics we took a standardized test and our mentor liked
to point out how many score fewer than the monkey.
Well I have our esteemed ape in third (you may recall he won outright
in 93). It is simply computed on seedings as if one simply took the
lower seeded team in each matchup. It is slightly unfair in that 1 and
2 seeds faced each other in two regional finals and an argument might
be made that the monkey should go 50-50 there (same for 8-9 in 1st
round) (Duke and Arizona were #2s vs 1s)(all four 9s beat 8s).

goes to Cleveland for baseball in the afternoon and the NCAA at night
and doesn't have to be with his wife.

Again goes to show you that you can throw away coaching at the end.
Arkansas was totally disorganized and throttled by the Duke defense,but
Thurman throws in a prayer and Nolan looks like a genius,just like
Donald Williams bailed out Dean a year ago.

| The Arkansas victory had a large affect on the final standings,with the seven
players who picked the Hogs dominating the final top 10.
Noone picked Florida to come out of the East. Two (one of them moi) picked the
Gators to make the East final and one player picked BC. Most of the rest of us
had either UNC or UConn (ughh!).
Only a few believers thought Coach K could get duke past Kentucky and Purdue
in the Southeast. The latter two dominated the southeast predictions.
The Midwest was divided between UMass and Arkansas. Everyone had UMASS going to
the sweet 16. Everyone was wrong. There were some Michigan predictions.
This was another one almost everyone had wrong.Louisville vs Cincy was a
popular regional final. The Bearcats couldn't survive the opener and neither
did Cal another popular choice. Those who stuck with the top 4 seeds were
rewarded as form prevailed.
Thanks to all who participated and if any of your scores seem wrong,please
notify me. I enjoyed running the contest this year,but if I do it again it will
be via a computerized form.

| totally random thoughts on last nights game...
- excellent, well-played game and fun to watch.
- Arkansas's defense caused Duke to make mistakes I haven't seem them make
in such volume before.
- I couldn't believe Arkansas going into the 4 corners.
- Grant Hill rebounds a lot better than I thought.
- somebody tell Dean Smith that Arkansas was also playing in the game. His
comments were solely about Duke, even after Arkansas won.
- Corliss Williamson sure does get up and down the court well for a big man.
- if I hear Billy Packer comment on how well Williamson gets up and down the
court again, I think I'll throw up.
- Williamson knows how to get inside position.
- Arkansas was lucky as all get out to make the 3 ptr with 50 sec. left.
- Packer seemed intimidated by Nolan Richardson after the game and acted like a
babbling fool.

Am I the only one who thought the game last night was poorly played.
The game was very exciting and fun to watch but certainly not well played.
I will give both teams credit for excellent defense. However, Duke had
many unforced turnovers and stupid plays. The 3-on-1 break when the freshman
point guard went behind his back (actually into his back) and the ball
goes out of bounds. Hill had many poor turnovers including a key one
late in the game. In fact, this is the sloppiest I ever seen Duke look.
Arkansas also missed a lot of easy shots.
I'm also surprised that people are praising Grant Hill for his
excellent game. He was a monster on the broads and played good D but was not
a factor on the offensive side (outside of his final 3 that tied the game).
It could be argued that he was more of a liability on the offensive end with
all his turnovers and poor shooting.

Alan, I was refering to Grant Hill's total perfomance throughout the
tournment and the 4 years we've had the pleasure of watching him.
With him moving to the bigs, I doubt I'll see him very much. As far
as the sloppiness last night, I like to attribute to the defense
and hence a good game from where I sat. As long as it's exciting
which you conceeded, how can't it be a good game?

Mike,
I wasn't directing my comments to you. I'll I've heard through
the talk shows, the commentators last night (especially Packer), and
also in here, is how is was a good game and even a well played game.
I can see how people think it was a good game since it was exciting
and close but I can't see how anyone can call it a well played game.
I also don't attribute all the turnovers to the Arkansas D. Many of
the turnoever were careless (Grant inbounding the ball to Arkansas,
Grant getting picked clean from behind, two poor behind the back plays, etc.)

| I thought that the game was sloppy, too. I'll credit some of that to
defense, but I think that the officiating had a lot to do with it, too.
Euphamistically speaking, the refs "let 'em play". There were times
when I don't think that they would have called an axe murder.
I'm not necessarily complaining about the refs, as they seemed pretty
consistent all night and were fair in their blindness. But when the
tone of the game is anything goes, I think you can only expect to
see some sloppy play.

Geesh, I was sort of happy that I didn't get my picks in this year.
Then I noticed that I picked 37 games correctly (big tie for 2nd) and
would have been in the pack for the "rounds" score.
However, it should be noticed that the selection committee kicked
everyones butt this year.

Nebraska teenager takes Tournament Challenge title
Defying conventional wisdom and the prognostications of most experts,
the Arizona Wildcats are 1997 national champions, and the Midwestern
teen who sagely predicted their remarkable run has claimed the
unofficial title of World's Smartest College Basketball Fan.
Aaron Plettner, 15, a freshman at Sutton High School in Sutton, Neb.,
bested 176,475 other entrants in this year's ESPNET SportsZone
Tournament Challenge presented by Pizza Hut and DoubleTree. His
prizes: a trip for two to next year's Final Four in San Antonio and 64
Large Stuffed Crust Pizzas from Pizza Hut.
"It hasn't totally sunk in yet," Plettner said when contacted by
SportsZone shortly after Arizona's victory. "It hasn't sunk in for my
family, either."
Plettner's confidence in his Wildcats scarcely wavered even as the
championship game hung in the balance. "I thought they had it won even
before the overtime," he said.
Was he surprised in the accuracy of his Challenge bracket? "In a way.
There were a lot of games that I questioned Arizona would win when I
filled it out, but I picked them anyway. Then when the games were
played, I felt confident they'd win. They really had nothing to lose
in the tournament and seemed really motivated."
Besides correctly tabbing Arizona, Plettner came within a point of the
eventual margin of victory (he'd predicted a 71-67 score).
As word has spread of Plettner's success in the Tournament Challenge
(he was the leader in points coming into Monday's title game), he's
become something of a celebrity in his hometown.
"I'm sure a lot of people here watched the game tonight to see if
Arizona won," he said. "A lot of my classmates know I've won. Some of
them called me after the game." Will he receive some sort of reception
when he returns to class Tuesday? "Probably so."

| Mark, I have the Ncaa suits coming in sixth. Fairly low. This is by
simply going by seedings and then Kentucky having a better RPI than
Minnesota for the final five points.
