    I figure this should stir up some fun discussion. . .
    
    This was in the 1/8/93 edition of the Denver Post:

    Broncos fans probably aren't surprised, but Denver has the best pro
    football fans in the country.
    
    Phoenix has the worst.
    
    So says Business First, a business newspaper in Buffalo, N.Y.  It rated
    each NFL team's fan support, using a formula that includes attendance
    the past 10 years, stadium capacity, team record, weather, local
    economice health, ticket prices, area population and the difference in
    attendance between winning and losing seasons.
    
    Buffalo - the only team to draw more than 3 million the past five
    seasons, when it led the NFL in attendance every time - tied New
    Orleans for seventh place because fans stayed away in droves during
    consecutive 2-14 seasons in the mid-1980's; the 47-percent attendance
    drop between the Bills' two best and two worst seasons of the last
    decade is the NFL's worst.
    
    Cleveland, which ranked second, dipped just 15 percent between best and
    worst seasons.
    
    "The Browns played .500 over the 10 years, and yet the attendance held
    fairly steady," Business First reporter Scott Thomas said.  "But
    nowhere did it hold the way it did in Denver.  The Broncos were 5-11 in
    1990, and attendance barely dropped."
    
    Denver and Cleveland were followed by the New York Giants, Chicago and
    Philadelphia (tied for fourth) and Green Bay.

	top ten, what with them selling out with season tickets for the past
	20 years.

      The sqeelers may have sold out season tix the past 20 years,  but
    have they sold out the whole staduim during that time?  It seems during
    the last few losing seasons that the staduim was 1/3 or so empty on
    games that were shown on TV.
    
      The donks have like an 8 year waiting list just to get season tix. 
    Of course that fluxuates with "fair" wether fans....

gotten, one might question their sanity.....

not me of course, I figure half the folks are there to see if the guy in
the barrel has anything on underneath and the other half are there cause
Woolworths had a sale of orange sweatshirts so they need someplace to go

I would think that Redskin fans are the most devoted. I'm pretty sure that a 
skins ticket is the toughest to come by (unless yo happen to be a political
boot licker).

I don't know.  Its impossible to get tickets to the Giants, who have all
season ticket holders, and have an extremely long waiting list (I believe
they cut it off at 15 years).

	Season tickets *should* be tough to get in a market of ~10
	million people. The fact that teams like Pittsburgh, Denver and
	Washington has such huge waiting lists is more impressive to me,
	since they have much smaller markets.

	And of course, stadium size plays a role. Buffalo didn't sell
	out the wild-card HOuston game, but they did have over 78,000 in
	attendance, with only a week to sell tickets.

    The STEELERS have SOLD OUT every game since somewhere around 1972.
    
    The empty seats in the bad years were no shows, not unsold tickets.
    
    The waiting list in Pittsburgh is ~10 years, give or take a week or so.

    Not so outrageous.  If the Broncos go 7-9 (.438), they *might* squeak
    by the Rockies.  Lower than that and it's automatic...

    If that is the case then there are a lot of people that need to cut
    down a bit 8^)
    
    Besides, I expect the Broncos to finish 6-10 next year, maybe 7-9
    if they are lucky.  So here is a simple table to show you how many
    games the Rockies would need to win to make my prediction come true.

     I think the Rockies will win 55-60 games, so your prediction would then
     be a little bit shakier.  After all, a third place finish in one of the
     NFL's weaker divisions gives the Broncos a not-so-difficult schedule.

      Weeker divisions?  Lets see,  the NFC east is tough for sure,  NFC
    west is 50-50, NFC central is weak, AFC east is cake, AFC central is
    50-50 by this years standards,  so actually the AFC west is probably
    2nd or 3rd toughest IMO.
    
      That prediction is "gutsy"...

    MikeL, I didn't see your reply until after I wrote mine.

     I said top 2 or 3!  The AFC east has the fish and the bills.  Thats
    it.  The AFC west had 2 teams in the playoffs with a third "looming". 
    I believe the NFC east (#1 div) schedule caught them this year.
    
     Of course now free agency will most likely change alot of this for all

    Yeah, the AFC West had 2 teams in the playoffs, same as the AFC East. 
    The difference is, the AFC East is sending a team to the Superbowl and
    the AFC West teams were out in the first round.  As far as teams
    "looming", the Colts of the AFC East still had a shot at the playoffs
    with a couple of weeks left.  The AFC West and AFC East each had a team
    at 2-14.

    the Chargers in round one, and Houscum losted to Baffle-O in the

Two teams did receive byes -- Pittsburgh and Miami.

SD was the division winner with the worst record so they had to play
the WC team with the worst record.   The other two WC teams were 
Houston and Buffalo (in that memorable game)

So, three WC, one division winner play, two best division winners rest.

    I never presented O'Donnell OR Brister as the nexted Bradshaw or
    Montana or Staubach type QB.  Both have their good points(Brister's is
    that he'll probably be outta here in a year or two) and their bad
    points.  O'Donnell has more potential, though, and a cooler head under
    pressure.
    
    Mr. Ed just chokes in the big one, that's fer sure.

    Thank god(tm) the Giants finally found someone that was willing to take

    Along with that, the Pats are about to sign Parcells. He'll never be as

    interviewed today.  The new coach will probably be named sometime next

    As a faider fan I'd hate to see the doinks get Buddy as their coach,
    cause if they did I'd be willing to bet that the doinks would be
    tranformed from the girly-mon finesse type team that they are today
    into a bunch of mean 'ol, back alley type thugs that would physically
    beat up their opponents. I hope they do go after that bum Shanahan,
    after seeing what he did wif da faids, there's nobody I'd rather see as
    the coach of the doinks. 
    
    Also, IMHO, I think it was good old Danny Reeves who made the doinks
    what they've been the last 10 or so years more than anybody, it was he
    who had the foresight and football know how to go out and get the
    dental wonder, and if anything, Mr. Ed (as well as Shanahan) owe their
    careers to Reeves and not the other way around. It's just as foolish to
    think that Marino made Shula what he is today, or that Staubach made
    Landry, Montana made Walsh, etc... etc.... likewise wif Reeves & Elway.
    Great coaches get the players they need. HtH.

      So what the excuse for the faids the past 8 years?  It mustta been
    Flores that was their succes eh Carlos?  They've had 1 good season
    since 83/84.  Whats next,  another heisman or washed up player?
    
      Yes REeves deserves alot of the credit for the good years in Denver, 
    but he also deserves the credit for bad years.  If he got the right
    players (as you said) then why does he have a mediocre offensive line? 
    Thats what I call good drafting,  no matter $$$ for an OL.
    
      Reeves and Elway both deserve credit.  Without Elway pulling some
    spectacular plays outta his "back pocket" when the team needed them, 
    then the Broncos never would have gone to the bowls, except the one
    when the defense basically took them there and then got killed!

    The trouble with the Faiders has been lack of a decent QB. They haven't
    had even an average QB there in a long time. And now, you can compound
    that with lack of a dominant running back. 
    
    The Donks owe much of their success to Reeves. They've been a mediocre
    team since the days of the orange crush but Reeves had them winning in
    spite of it.
    
    They also owe their success to Pile-it-High stadium. I think that
    visiting teams just get worn out by the altitude by the fourth quarter.
    What else could explain their inept road games.

     2 Denver papers and the 9ers have said the Bowlen has made an offer to 
    Mike "Yes Man" Shanahann.  The funny part is that S.F. has made a
    counter offer to keep Mikey on as O'Coordinator for more bucks that
    Pat "I'm as tight as Joe Robbie Ever Was" Bowlen has offered for the
    head coaching position in Denver.  If Bowlen insists on running this 
    team the way he's run his oil business (which is in deep trouble) dark
    days could be on the horizon for the once MIGHTY BRONCOS.  I hope Mike
    tells Pat to shove his job and the measly 450k salary...  It might be 
    fun to see Wade"Son Of Bum" Phillips at the helm of this team.  Bowlen
    has put all his money on Shanahann and if he can't get him Wade will
    get the job.  What a buch of $%^%^& this has all been.  Bowlen is a 
    $^&^&$ liar...  Mike has had a lock on this thing since last year.]

    What's the big deal?  Things have been stalled by the Niners'
    counter offer.  Besides, I doubt there's a whole of teams out there (if
    any) who would offer Shanahan much more than about half a mil anyway.
    I still expect the details to get ironed out and Shanahan be named the

    I also thought he might be a candidate to go to NY, but then I read
    where Wade said he doesn't want to go there.  If Wade goes anywhere, it
    would probably be to Houston as their def. coordinator.  I heard that

I'm in Ireland and when I got interested in american football I just happened
it pick denver for a team to follow.

So over the last few years, We have done well, but still won nothing, but now
a new coach. Shanahan seemed to be everyone's favourite, Is he good? as for this
wade lad, well I dont know anything about him. Where did he come from and what
do people think of him as a coach?? (track record). From the previous note
it doesnt seem bright for the future (at least I have my soccer to look forward
too!!)

My condolences on picking Denver 8^)   (I'm a NY Giants fan so I had to

Wade Phillips is the current defensive coordinator (now head coach).

Actually, I think he'd make a pretty good head coach, but he certainly
doesn't have the image that Bowlen wants.  Bowlen likes his coaches to
look like executives.  I doubt Wade will portray that, but I'll bet
Wade wins....

BEST coach available, so he tried to get two other coaches that both
said "up yours, Georgy boy", so he had to settle for the Dregs....

Now there are no good assistants left, he dragged his feet for so long...

     YES !!!!!  Wade "Son Of Bum" Phillips is the next head coach of the
    Denver Broncos.  I am glad the Shanahan and Bowlen had a falling out
    over the $$$ and that Wade got the Job.  He will be good for Denver.
    Now...  The true test of his smarts is the choices he make for O & D
    coordinators.  Word has is that Ex-dallas man Charlie Waters is up for 
    the D...  Sure like to see someone with some imagination come in and 
    handle the O.  Good luck Wade...  You do well.

      Well I for one think its a good move.  It will be interesting to see
    who Wade hires as the off coor.  Charlie Waters will be the def coor.
    
      I think its funny that Shanny turned down Bowlen.  The 9'rs made him
    a great offer.  I would like to see Wade hire an offensive guy like
    Shanny.
    
      Alot have speculated on how the Broncos will be next year,  and it
    may be a little early to say,  but I think they will have at least as
    good a record as this year if not better!  Free agency and drafting
    will be key.
    
      I'm not sure how Wade/Pat are goin' to handle those situations.

    The story we got out here is that SF matched Bowlen's offer and
    Shannahan decided to stay with the 49ers.

Hey I volunteer as Offensive coordinator - I can be real good 
at that, every pun intended :-)

    Okay, okay, I admit I like the decision now, probably because everyone
    else in Denver is so positive about the move.  I guess the big reason I
    liked Shanahan was that he was going to bring SF's offensive philosophy
    to Denver, but then again Wade will undoubtedly make changes to the
    offensive system too.  The big positives about Wade getting the job are
    that he seems to be a players' coach and he already knows the Bronco
    organization and personnel inside and out.  
    
    As for Shanahan, I don't know that you can say he flat-out "turned down
    Bowlen."  From what I'm reading and hearing, it sounds like Bowlen and
    Shanahan met, couldn't agree on the terms, and a contract was never
    even *offered* to Shanahan.  Now that's not to say Bowlen didn't want
    Shanahan, just that Mike didn't want to come in under Bowlen's terms.  
    Apparently, 3 of the big hangups were (not necessarily in this order):
    1) Bowlen wanted Shanahan to keep many of the current assistants while
    Shanahan wanted to bring in his own, 2) Salary, and 3) the length of
    the contract.  Shanahan took the Raider job a few years ago but
    was pretty much a puppet under Davis, and he doesn't want to coach
    under those circumstances again.  Shanahan apparently is confident 
    enough that he will get another head-coaching offer down the road.
    
    As mentioned, Waters is fully expected to be named the new defensive
    coordinator.  The first name to pop up for offensive coordinator is
    June Jones, who is currently an assistant with the Falcons.  George
    Henshaw apparently won't return as Denver's o-coordinator.
    
    I sure hope Bowlen goes after some of the good free agents that will be
    out there.  He doesn't necessarily have to go out and sign a big-time
    superstar like Reggie White (would be nice though!), but at least an
    above average offensive line talent or two.

So I'm watching the press conference of the annoucement and ole Wade's talking
about how he and John will get along and how he and John will do this and that,
and I'm think to myself who can this guy John be? Isn't the owner's name Pat? 
Then all of sudden ESPN cuts to a telephone interview of Elway. Right then and 
there I knew everything would be fine in denver cause ole Wade wasn't going to 
sack Mr. Inties....

  The 9'ers may have matched the Bronco's salary offer but Shanahan still
  turned down a heafty hunk of change. Offensive coordinators don't have
  TV and radio shows and aren't involved in nearly as many endorsements
  as head coaches. That all adds up to a lot of cash. There was a lot more
  to Shanahan declining (if he ever received an offer) than just money.

    When the faids were under Shanny's command they sipped terribly, and

    very obvious......Davis had made a big mistake making Shanny the coach
    of the faids...I'm just glad he fired the bum before he could do much
    more damage, and didn't decide to stick with him like he did wif Marc
    Wilson or like he's doing now wif Shredder....
    
    I was hoping that the doinks would get Shanny, that way he could've
    brought to the donks what he brought to the faids....a losing record!
    
    On the other hand, I think the doinks will be alot better off with

    I seriously doubt it, the faids already have two fine tight-ends in 
    Ethan Horton, and Andrew Glover. Horton didn't do to well lasted year,
    but was a pro-bowler the year before that. Glover doesn't get too much
    playing time, but when he does it's usually good for 6 points. 
    
    I think about the only two doinks that Uncle Al would be interested in
    is Atwater, and Brooks.

    The other two free-agent LB's that Denver does have are Meck, and Tim
    Lucas. Now I'm really not too sure about how good or bad Lucas is, but
    I don't think he's one of the better ones on this team or around the
    league. As for Meck, he was great once, but he's definitely seen better
    days. Uncle Al would be crazy, IMHO, to go after these guys especially
    considering the fact that Sam Mills of N.O., and Tim Harris of the
    49'ers might be available.
    
    BTW, could you imagine if some team were able to sign Michael Brooks,
    Sam Mills, and Tim Harris this year.....sheesh!

      Well the donks have signed a left OT Don Maggs from Houston,  and now
    Brian Habib from Minny (don't know his position).  Maggs has been a
    starter for most of his carreer, right?  Don't know anything about
    Habib.  Was he a starter and what position?
    
      My point is,  at least Wade/Blowlin are bringing in some people to
    help protect Elway from gettin creamed by people like Derrick Thomas.

    As mentioned in the Raider note, Green was traded to the Faids for a
    3rd-round pick in this year's draft, giving Denver 3 3rd-round picks.
    Green didn't figure to play a whole lot with Denver intending to throw
    to the backs more this year, and Delpino figures to be Bernstine's
    backup.
    
    Denver was dropped from 13th to 14th in the draft order because the
    league awarded the Eagles an extra first-round pick due to the loss of
    Reggie White.

      So whats the scoop on SAmmie Smith?  In today's GT,  they give the
    names of Bernstine, Delpino, Rivers and Lewis as the backfield.  The
    thing is,  I haven't heard of any trade. Smith seams injury prone,  but
    Lewis can't hold onto the ball.  I think Smith should stay and get rid
    of Lewis, just for the fact that Smith had is groin repaired and now
    should be ok.   He's bigger to.
    
      Alton Montgomery was traded to Atlanta for a 3rd and 7th round pick. 
    Maybe a good move.  He was great at special teams,  but wasn't a great
    Safety.  Of course this is comparing him to Atwater and Smith.
    
      I think Blowlen is getting serious about buying a great team.  So far
    its looking great.
    
      A great WR, CB and DL is about the only positions they need to fill. 
    They did pick up Danny Noonan from Green Bay.  I take it he's been a
    bust with Dallas and Green Bay??

    So am I. Like I said before, Maggs oughtta be some help (he's pretty
    good), but the doinks are crazy to make Habib one of the highest paid

      Dan Williams.
      6'3" , 290lbs.  "Rated" as the 3rd best DL in the draft.  I hadn't
    heard of this guy until yesterday.  Saw some clips on him,  and he does
    seem to have potential.  Time will tell.  I agree with this pick since
    the DL needed help.
    
    
      Glyn Milburn:
    
     5'8", 177lbs.  Small RB that may end up turning into a Steve Sewell
    type of player I'm assuming.  Denver didn't need another RB.  This guy
    supposedly can play WR, slot and return man.  He has great speed. 
    Maybe convert him to a CB?  Nah.  This pick suprised me when Denver
    coulda picked up a decent "Rated" WR.
    
      Rondell Jones:
    
      6'2" 220lbs.  Safety from North Carolina.  Denver "Rated" 2nd best
    safety in draft (#1 rated went to faiders).  They needed a good back-up
    to Dennis Smith.  Haven't heard much of this guy.  Are there any ACC
    people have any history on this guy?  His size is good.  If he's a big
    hitter,  then he will fit in.
    
      Jason Elam:
    
      5'11" 192 lbs.  Kicker/punter from Hawaii.  Set some school and WAC
    records.  Supposedly he can kick 50-60 yeard FGs.  If true,  then
    Treadwell and Deluiso(sp?) will most likely be outta here.  I don't see
    Mike Horan getting de-throned at punting.  This must be a 1 roster spot
    instead of 2 situation.  This could be a good move.
    
    
      Jeff Robinson:
    
      6' 4.5"  264lbs.  DE from Idaho.   2 time Division II-A all American.
      Seems to be on the light side for a DE.  Not sure about this pick.
    
      An ok draft thus far for Wade.  Something tells me there are some
    trades in the making.  
    
     Denver has 7 RB's now. Bernstiene, Delpino, Smith, Lewis, Sewell,
    Rivers, and Milburn.  Lewis is outta here IMO.  A trade involving
    either Smith, Sewell or Lewis is not out of the question.
    
      Hopefully they pick up some CBs & WRs today.  This is still weak.

    I wasn't overly thrilled with the pick considering the holes at
    receiver, but then again the DL hasn't had an impact player in quite a
    while and maybe Williams will be it.  Dronett should develop into at
    least a solid starter, but Kenny Walker was a disappointment in his 2nd
    year.
    
    Milburn seems more like of a luxury being that he's a specialist.  I'll
    be surprised if they don't use him at WR, but he'll probably be used
    more as a 3rd down player and not a starter.  I guess they liked the
    fact that he is kind of a gamebreaker like Conway.
    
    Tim, I think you're right about Elam, that they drafted him more to

    Broncos decided to not renew Sammie Smith's contract, making him a
    totally unrestricted free agent.  Sure seems like they could've gotten
    something for him.  They were disappointed with his injuries last year
    and say he just doesn't fit into their plans.
    
    They drafted 3 WR's and a TE in the final 4 rounds of the draft on
    Monday, plus they signed WR Greg Primus of Colorado State.  Primus
    didn't get alot of recognition nationally playing at CSU, but I
    wouldn't be too surprised if he stuck with the team.  We'll see in a

      Elway will throw more int's,  but I THINK he will throw TD's than
    int's this year based on the new offense and the OL that were aquired.
    
      They do have veterans:
      Vance Johnson, Author Marshal, Derrick Russell and Shannon Sharpe.
      Reeves F'd up when he let Young go (waived).  Young was clutch man.
    
      Steve Sewell can play WR in a pinch.
    
      Phillips drafted Mylborn(sp?) so he can be used as WR.  He drafted
    and/or signed like 5 other WRs. 
    
      The RB's and TE's will see more balls thrown thier way.  This is
    supposed to be a "Bill Walsh" style of offense.
    
      IMO, the WR and CB should be the only weak areas.  Yes that is 2 to
    many,  but hey, not as bad off as the faids.
    
      If this offense can learn the new scheme quickly,  then Denver has
    the POTENTIAL to be one of the AFC's best offenses,  which IMO will
    make their defense better, seeing how they wouldn't be on the field for
    3/4 of the game do to the ineptitude of the offense (like last year).

    Huh...?   12 years ago was '81....and I'm pretty sure Plunkett was the
    QB from around '80 to '84 (that's 1), then I think Rusty Hilger took
    over for a little while (or was he before Plunkett?) (...2 ??), then
    Marc "put me outta my misery" Wilson took over for a few years (#3), 
    which leaves us wif Shredder who for all intents and purposes has been
    leading the Raiders for the last 5-6 years (?) (...that's 4). And now
    there's Hoss  .....(#5). You could proberly throw in TM, who was the
    starter for about 3 or 4 games lasted year....but Shredder started and
    ended as the #1 QB. That still leaves 5-6 "permanent" QB changes
    missing....maybe somebody else knows what TSN is talking about...?

      The jints signed Micheal Brooks to a contract yesterday, and to make
    matters worse, his backup Keith Traylor was put on waivers do to
    personal reasons (in other words he got busted again).
    
      Brooks signed for the same $$$ that the Broncos offered him,  but
    said he went with NJ since he didn't like the way the Broncos handled
    his situation.
    
      Brooks was a good LB for sure, but he wasn't worth the $2.*mil/year
    that Bowlen would have to fork out.
    
      Jeff Mills will most likely be thier replacement.  Jeff is a good LB
    and is actually faster and bigger than Brooks.  He weighs around 256. 
    He was good as a backup.  Now he will have to prove himself.
    
      Now the donks LB corps isn't as strong as last year.  Rumor has Wade
    looking at Wymon from the seachickens.

      Training camp opened yesterday.  Only Reggie Rivers and Derek Russell
    remain out of camp.  All other veterans and rookies have signed.  Thats
    the good news.
    
      The Bad,  Steve Sewell retired the other day.  He hasn't fully
    recovered from his ankle shattering last year.  He failed the physical, 
    thus prompting him to retire.  He will be kept in some front office
    like human relations.  He will be missed!!!
    
      Sewell would have flourished in this new offense.  As it was,  48.8%
    of the time Sewell touched the ball, he made a 1st down!!!
    
      With this,  Rivers did an excellent job replacing Sewell last year, 
    and now with all these other RB's, Denver is deep in that position.
    
      Left tackle will be the gap to fill.  Frank Pollard seems the best
    canidate.

    Well, it really must be football season again, because John Elway is
    crying up a river once more.  I thought Dan Reeves put John-boy over
    his knee pretty good with his "John needs to mature a little and grow
    up" response to Elway's whining.  Nothing like a good cross-country

      Yeh I saw that yesterday.  I didn't read the article in the paper, 
    but it basically stated Elway was pondering retirement if Reeves was
    around.  Biff denies stating that to Blowlen and that he had nothing to
    do with Collie being canned.
    
      Collie got him good with the grow up part.  I do beleive that this
    squable is over, finally!

    pre-season victory over the lowly Tampa Bay team warrents over two
    minutes, but the Rockies breaking MLB's longest losing streak was 20
    seconds.  Where did the government dump the rest of that agent orange

Well the Bronco's opened pre-season with a win against the Tampa Bay

Didn't see the game but I caught the first Denver drive on the radio seemed like 
old BBJ on the first series march the team down to the 8 then he threw 
the usual INT.

      All I saw was the 4th qtr.  Game was over when Deberg came in.
    
      I was hoping to see Young play against the mighty Denver defense, 
    but since Bono is the best backup (according to alot of NFC types),
    then the defense will still get tested by a real QB;-)
    
      The offense still needs work from what I have heard and read.

      Well DEnver has a potentially great OL now, especially once Maggs is
    back.  Will they live up to their potential?  I hope so.  All they need
    now are 2 man-man type CB's....
    
      The running game sure has been lacking,  so hopefully Zimmerman at

Seems the Bronco's bus is fueled up and ready for a AFC west showdown against
a San Diego Charger team this weekend. 

The Bronc's started very slow against probably the weakest of the 2 teams in 
the Medowlands area this weekend and the only thing that saved their butt was
a rookie scatback named Milburn. 

San Diego on the other hand played the most "offensive team" in the league 
and basically kicked into a win. No big plays no strong drives. Seattle scored 
the only TD of the game a defensive interception. Stan Humphries was 13-30-2 

Expect a cloud of dust in Mile hile this weekend with the Orange team on the 
up-side 14-10.

      The Broncos picked up Alphonso Taylor from Phoenix.  This guy weighs
    350lbs!  Thats huge, especially for a NT.  From what I saw,  he is all
    gut!  They brought him in to help stuff the middle.  This guy looks
    like he can stuff the middle and the outsides.
    
      If Denvers defense can stop the pass over the middle (or anywhere at
    the rate they were going sunday), then the bolts will hurt.

Darrien Gordon returns punts, in fact he'll probably return one against the
Donks for a TD.  Lewis returns kickoffs.

Yes, if he gets on a roll, Elway could go crazy (my biggest worry about
this game).  But I don't think that visions of a Donk monster pass rush will 
keep any Chargers awake Saturday night.

Ahh, I love a rivalry.  Agreed, should be a good game.  Everyone's pickin the

      The Chargers were given chance after chance (since thats Denvers

    	The Donks rolled but it coulda been a real close game if 
    	Humphries had his touch.  He missed a wide open Lewis for
    	what woulda been sure TD's.  Lewis also should have dove
    	for one in the endzone.  That guy was open all day!

    	The only guy he had any praise for was Vance Johnson.  The rest
    	of the game was spent gushing over the Chargers.  At one point,
    	he even yelled out "Alright!" when O'Neal sacked Elway.  He tried
    	to brush it off by saying he meant it was good to see O'Neal all
    	the way back from his knee injury.  Yeah, right.  
    
    	I don't want to have to listen to some *homer* do the Donk games.

Gotta hand it to you Tim, you were on the money with the comment about

I also agree with the comments about Christenson.  I even noticed the bias, 
and I'm a Charger honk.  But I've seen him be biased against the Chargers as
well, so I don't know where he comes from.

Other than the bonehead stuff from Bieniemy, the difference in the game was
that Elway made the plays when opportunities presented themselves and 
Humphries didn't.  The 3rd and 19 pass to Johnson in the 3rd qtr. was the back
breaker.

But the thing I'm most upset about after two games is that the Faiders are
looking good.  Bummer.

    Well, this crow isn't tooo bad with a little Grey Poupon!
    
    I was sittin' in the stands with my good friend Jim Scott, a die-hard
    Bronco fan.  And the game boiled down to this...
    
    6:38 left in the game.  Score 24-17.  Chargers have the ball on their
    own 10 yard line.  The Chargers HAD to go 90 and get 7 points to tie up
    the game.  There would have been about 2 minutes left and the game
    would have been decided by a field goal kicker probably.  Good teams
    would have gone down the field and tied the game.  The Steelers of old
    would have gone down the field and tied the game.  The Chargers went 3
    and out and never picked up the first down.  We kicked, Broncos got a
    51 yard FG, and then the Chargers were in dire straights....Humphries
    had to throw and got picked off.  But the game was REALLY decided back
    with 6:38 left in the 4th.  So, although the Chargers amassed almost
    400 yards of offense.  When it counted, the Charger O layed down and
    died.
    
    Also the Charger secondary sucked.  The Broncos continually got a step
    or two past the dbs and Elway was masterful in laying the ball in. 
    
    The Bronco D got alot of good pressure on Humphries, frequently causing
    him to the scurry out of the pocket.
    
    But I did get 23 Charger football cards signed by the individual
    players.

      The Broncos defense is questionable.  I haven't seen the stats from
    the game,  but Humphries & co were making them bend alot!  Giving up
    400yds in each of the last 2 games can spell trouble. 
    
      If Montana plays next monday night,  then it could be ugly. 
    Something tells me we might see more of the no-huddle next week
    depending on the score.
    
      David Kreig should hang it up.  4 turnovers by him alone, plus the
    steal from Dial kealt KC yesterday.
    
      SD will be tested with the 1st place schedule!

yup. towards the end of the broadcast Al Michaels was giving the scores
for baseball games that still mattered. Dan D chimed in that someone or
other had gotten their 14th win. Al M. turned to Dan D. in absolute
amazement that Dan knewthat - it came out like amazement that Dan D.
knew anything about a sport other than football - it went from there.
It was sort of good natured fun, but it did get more heated than those
type of exchanges usually do.

    	I missed that hit last week,  But Smith had one super hit on a
    running back at the line of scrimiage, against San Diego.  There was a
    huge hole for the guy to run through, but Smith PLANTED him.
    
    	With the way Green Bay has been playing, Denver has a shot even
    though they normally stink on the road.  Keep Elway healthy and they
    will take the division.  Maybe even have the best record in the AFC
    seeing as how the AFC East has to match up with the NFC East for most
    of it's non-confrence games. 8)
    
    	I like the role that Denver is in as the Dark Horse this season. 
    Nobody (Except that one guy on ESPN's Monday Night Prime) is talking
    about Denver winning in the AFC.  It's either Buffalo or K.C. or
    (he he) Houston.  Other than those 3 it's Pittsburgh or San Diego.
    Nobody expects Denver to do anything! Except us loyal fans. 8)
    With the easy schedule we will make the playoffs and with a little luck
    give John one more shot at a Ring.

    the truth when I looked at the schedule at the beginning of this year I
    figured that this one would be a loss.  The only reason that I was
    doubtiing a Bronco defeat was the sloppy was Green bay had played in
    previous weeks.
    
    	Anyway,  Looking ahead I think the Broncs will only loose 3 more
    games this year.  At the Raiders, At the Chargers, and one more
    somewhere else.  This will leave them at 11-5, not bad but they won't
    have Home field through out the playoffs which is what they will need

      No Mikey,  I didn't know alot about the packers TE.  They don't tend
    to show losing teams on the tube, and the pack doesn't fall into the
    regional coverage.
    
      As to Meck,  hey he is getting old and slow.  He's great against the
    run,  but passing is obviously his downfall.  This will be his last
    year.
    
      As to the faids,  it don't matter who their QB is, 'cause they all
    lack.  Old man Evans is the best they have.  If Hoss starts,  he will

A couple of them calls about balanced out.

The TD pass to Marshall wasn't, he was down at the 1 or 2. In typical bad
reffing fashion, the guy at the point said he was down and another guy
across the field, shielded from the action said he was in. 

Then the pass to Russell was good for a TD but the idiot ref standing
right there blew it completely.

What're they trying to do? Bring back the replay? 

And yes, it was bad on both sides of the line.

 I already gushed about the Steelers three weeks ago. The Giants I'll gush
 about when they finally beat somebody. I read my USA Today this morning 
 and when I found out what Smellway was making I couldn't just let it go.
 Besides the fact that I've had to watch him 3 stinkin times this year and
 listen to BS crap about how great he is. Yet a few weeks ago they showed a
 stat where he has 165 career TDs and 159 career Intys. Throw in that he
 must have ran atleast 30 of thsoe td's in and it makes my point even more

    What are you listening to?  From the schedule posted a couple back,
    there are 2 4 pm games - on on Channel 10 out of Providence and one on
    Ch. 7 out of Boston.

uh, Mac, Providence is not considered local. 

Channel 4 has a 1PM game, and there is no game on channel 7 (last week when
Pats were on the road there was)
Channel 7 alone has a 4 PM game.

    then Boston ch 4 cannot do a 4pm because of 1pm blackout telecast but
    apparently ch 10 providence (?not the home affiliate) can which doesn't

      The Broncos showed why the Rams beat the sqeelers 27-0 earlier in the
    year.  The might donks showed everone what kind of team they are
    capable of being,  and that against the #1 defense in the league!!!
    
      I don't have stats,  but the donks had to be up around 350 yards...
    
      Elway has been showing that he is not overrated.  I don't recall him
    getting picked,  though it was close a couple of times.  Woodson didn't
    eat his wheaties and Figures was picked on all day.
    
      Figures played tight,  but he does tend to stick his arm out to hold
    up the reciever as the reciever is getting a step on him.  He was
    flagged 2x for it,  1 was questionable and the other wasn't.
    
      With KC losing,  the donks pulled within 1 game of 1st place.

  Sorry Tim but he is. Facts are facts and if it wasn't for this year
  he'd have more intys than TD's lifetime. Can't think of any other QB
  with stats like that, who has/had gotten the undeserve accolates that
  johnnyboy has....Gibbs said it best that it was a tough situation
  for the Steelers walking into Pile it High yesterday but later on in
  the year if they meet watch for the Steelers to win......

      I knew you would respond Mike!   Its certainly not his 1st year
    of having more tds than ints.  And all the other great qb's have their
    better years just like Elway is this year, thus keeping their stats on
    the good side, plus Elway wins alot of games, alot more than he loses.
    
      He showed what he can do when the OL earns their keep. He's having a
    great year and the SQEELERS found that out yesterday when Denver scored
    37 points on that #1 defense and kept O'donnel to 13 points, 7 of that
    coming against the prevent defense in the final minutes.

    It was foreseen by some before the game even started that the sTEELERS
    would go into PILED HIGH, play uninspired football, compared to Monday
    night, lose the game by a respectable score, and come back to the Burgh
    with their tails between their legs, and start getting ready for nexted
    week .vs. the Oilscum.
    
    All of that came true, excpet, that is, for the respectable score part.
    
    All of the STEELERS hopes rolled away with the fumble on their first
    possession by Leroy Thompson, who lost the ball without being touched,
    and gave it away to the Donks.  What would have been 7-3 STEELERS,
    truned into 10-0 DOnks, and it was all gone from there.
    
    It was a game the STEELERS, however, could afford to lose, not a must
    win, and it came on the heels of their biggest win in a long time, and
    a short week of preparation, but, by the same token, it showed them
    just how the Baffalo Bills felt Monday night.
    
    Twas a severe ass kickin' handed out at the hands of the "must win"

  As a Steeler fan, I've got to say that John Elway looked especially sharp.
  On many of his passes, his receivers weren't open by much, if any, but the 
  ball was perfectly thrown in a way where the receiver had a chance at the 
  ball but the defender didn't.

    Well, as far as must games go, it was a must game fer the dOnks.  They
    went into the game1-1/2 behind KC, and with a win could pull to one
    game.  A loss, and they're saddled 2 games back with 6 to go, and KC in
    the driver's seat.
    
    The STEELERS are now tied with Houscum, and go to the assholedome
    nexted week.  The STEELERS have played pretty good against the Oilscum
    the last couple years, and have two games against them left.  SUre, it
    would've been nice to win yesterday, but it looked like the team
    suffered a major sized let down from Monday night.
    
    Baffalo, BTW< became the first team this year to win the week after
    they played the STEELERS.  All other STEELERS opponents have lost the

    For a change, I agree with Mikey. Elway throws too many INT's. Pick any

      The Donks will be beat by the faids again next weekend!  They can't
    even keep a 17 point lead, for the 2nd time this year.  And losing to
    the 'Bucs last weekend has to be the most embarrasing thing I've heard
    of (didn't see the game).
    
      The defense sucked yeaterday, especially Waters.  Running the
    "prvent you from winning" defense is dumb!  Doing a 6-7 DB zone
    coverage?  The DL gave Hoss all day to throw.
    
      This was a typical donk/faider game, next week won't be much
    difference with the outcome being the same.
    
      Don't matter,  none of these 2 teams will go far.  Houston has to be
    the favorite for showing up at the SB.

    The true stupidity came from reigning in John Elway, who was not going 
    to be stopped for the entire last quarter-and-a-half if allowed to play.
    He wasn't stopped in overtime until Bum Phillips Jr. (could have been
    Dan Reeves Jr., from the demonstrated lack of guts) decided that the 
    Donks were close enough to try the FG.
    
    I was hoping that the Donks would win at the time because of the Steelers'
    interests but it actually worked out for the best.  Now we get the
    Steelers and Raiders in the playoffs (however briefly) instead of the 
    possibility of the Jests and/or woeful Dolphins, plus there will be no
    Pile It High travesties this year...

    Denver beat the Faids to go to the Super Bowl. Madden still grouses to
    this day about John Keyworth's non-fumble on the Raider one that was 
    returned for a "Touchdown" but disallowed due to the stoppage of
    Keyworth's forward progress. We'll hear him tell that story this
    weekend for sure.

Hopper is phenomenal.    Next time you see it, watch the background
behind him -- the guy there looks over, gets this "who the hell is THAT???"
look on his face.  They cut to some highlights.  Then, they cut back
to Hopper, and in the background the guys are talking to a cop.

      Told ya they would lose.
    
      Elway had a good day.  Defense and the punter musta forgot to change
    their shorts yesterday morning, 'cause they sure stunk the place up in
    the afternoon.
    
      THE DB's have been the weakness of the defense for years, and the
    faids exploited that yesterday and the weak before, and of course
    Waters didn't do anyhting to adjust for that weakness.
    
      Well the donks had a better year than alot of people thought they
    would.

    Worse officiating in any game this year was the Raiders/Broncos game,
    fromn the non call on the taunting on the 1st Raider TD to the pass
    interference call on Braxton. The Raiders should have had about 20
    penalties on them, if the zebras had the testicular fortitude to throw
    the flags. I don't think it would have changed the outcome of the game,
    but it certainly would have made it more entertaining.

Regarding the officiating, I was kind of wondering about it myself.
And I'm not a Bronco fan.

The call on Braxton seemed iffy at best.  He did turn toward the ball
at just about the same time he got in from of Brown.  I think it
could have gone either way.

The one that really puzzles me though, was Elway's last pass attempt.
Sharpe was running a crossing pattern, and was decked while the ball
was in the air.  It appeared that the defender who hit him was covering
another receiver and inadvertently ran into him.  Still, though, he
was interfered with.  Maybe the refs ruled the ball uncatchable, or
maybe they didn't see it, or maybe the moon is made out of green
cheese.  Regardless, I think that Elway had a legitimate beef on
that one.

I would think that if the offense is going to run those routes, the onus
is on them to avoid the DBs.... If Denver was deliberately trying to
cross up the DBs, then Sharpe should have been watching where he was

Air is correct but it's almost never called. The offensive players can't set
picks for each other down field until the pass is complete...

Watch Jerry Rice some game...he even uses the official in the center of the
field as a pick setter for a lot of his crossing routes...

    I'm not going to deny that the officiating was bad on Sunday.  However,
    I don't remember any Bronco fans complaining last week when during the
    second quarter one of the Denver receivers caught the ball, took two
    steps, was hit and fumbled and it was ruled incomplete.  Next play,

    There are bad calls EVERY single week and the officiating has been bad

	Mab is right there is an illegal pick rule in the NFL. The
receivers aren't suppose to cross if they are within 5 yrds of each other.
It is also very very rarely called. As someone else mentioned, Jerry
Rice uses the umpire in the middle of the field to set the pick for him.

No, the Panthers found some other place/town that financed a stadium by
selling ownership rights up front. Caint remember who or where but I know
Charlotte didn't invent this.

On the issue of ownership transfers, the Hornets are starting to try to
get nasty about this. They started a new policy where unless you are a
charter member - had season tickets from season 1 and still have them -
you caint transfer the rights to anyone. Look for this one to head to
court cause there's no clause like this when you bought them the second
year.

    Pgh Steelers season ticket holders "own" rights to the tickets fer the
    nexted season.  If they don't renew their tickets, the person at the

    their seats.  If they chose, however, to sell the tickets AND the
    rights, they cain tack on about $250-500/seat fer the rights, depending
    where in the stadium they sit, and the nexted person on the waiting

The Hornets seats required no investment. They've been selling like hot
cakes, though with the average price being about $3K per seat. Back in
the pre-Hornets days, no one thought that having a season ticket would be
worth anything. 'Tweren't no investment for the Hornets tickets. And the
onliest people being ticked off are those who may have to go to court to
transfer their ticket prices cause George Shinn is realizing he's missing
out on some money, somehow.

      The donks will probably offer Tim Brown $3mil/year contract.  I think
    it's a salary cap tactic that could come back to slap their faces if
    Uncle Al doesn't match/better.

    making? I don't think so Tim.  He is great at returning punts though.
    He would take over those duties which lacked last year, and lost at
    least 1 game do to fumbles.
    
      Denver needs defense defense and defense.  You can have an all pro
    offense, but a bad defense won't cut it and won't take you to the dance
    and win it.  2 cornerbacks a 1 DL would do fine Wade.  Go after Henry
    Ellard if you need a good reciever.  Re-sign Vance for his usual 8

    From what I've read, the deal is not final.  Brown signed an offer
    sheet with the Broncos, but the Raiders still have the right to match
    the offer.

    I heard that the contract includes a no-trade clause.  If Al matches,

      Well the draft for the Broncos really didn't exist this year and next
    year.
    
      Denver should have one of the 2 best offenses in the NFL this
    year (9'rs the other).  They traded the house away for Zimmerman and
    Pritchard.
    
      They also traded for Ben Smith and Ted Washington.  These 2 are
    coming off serious injuries and are former #1 picks from their old
    teams.  I hope they work out, but sumfin tells me one of them will go
    down again.

       Gone is Greg Kragen.  Alot of heart, but size and $$$ did him in.

  machines that ever stepped on the gridiron.

  The only thing is, they sold the farm to improve the offense and neglected
  the defense. They're gonna have to score 30+ points in many games to 
  out score their opposition. Also, they're only one Elway sore shoulder
  away from going 6-10. I hope he stays healthy. If he does, they should be
  a lot of fun to watch.

      Denver is in the same position with Mecklenburg that the 'Tics
     are with Parish. You'd like to keep the guy and even reward him
     with one last year at a hefty salary but the cap dictates that you
     have to let him go. Mecklenburg who was never a speed merchant anyways
     has lost a couple of steps. He really was a minus for Denver last
     year. It's too bad that there isn't a clause that exempts players
     with x numbers of years with one team from the cap because Mecklenburg
     ought to finish out in Denver with dignity but probably won't.

	I agree with you, Tommy, but only if said veteran player still
	has to EARN his position on the roster.  Too often in the past 
	players were kept on, after they were unable to compete with
	their peers, only to later embarass themselves and their teammates.

	I'm not saying this is the case with Meklenberg, at least not yet.

    is just above average in pass rush and is excellent at stopping the

      Tyrone Braxton inked a 2 year deal with Mi hami.  No loss.  He had

first move was to cut Reggie Johnson TE, and ask Maddox for a reduction in pay 
he was to make $1.2 million this year. The Bronco's asked for a 100% reduction
in pay. If he can't be traded he will be cut. 
The Bronco's released Shawn Moore last week leaving only Hugh Millen as a 
backup QB, they also signed some Cardinal reject this week.

      I saw Hugh Millen play last night.  1st series he looked bad, but

I think Glenn's out, so I'll pinch hit.  The Bolts finally break thru
and win a game at Mile Hi!!  I personally love the way the whole country
continues to overlook the Chargers.  I believe that they have as good
a chance to win the AFC West as any of the other teams.  With this
division, in recent history the team with the fewest injuries over the
course of the season usually wins.

As for the game, WHAT A GAME!  The Donks and Bolts beating the hell out
of one another.  Great football.

I was up in the SoCal mountains camping with my family, so I was able to
pick up the Donk station on the radio - I loved the way your fans were
jumping from buildings after the game on the talk show.  It's only one
game!  One guy was saying the Donks should fire Phillips and Waters. HA!

That chicken bone in my throat is causing a terrible gag reflex whenever

  I don't think so, there always around near the end but they usually lose
either the A.F.C. Championship game or the Superbowl.

  My theory on Denver is that their record is always better than it should
be because they adapt to playing in thin air and win most of their home games.
If that gives them enough wins for home advantage during the playoffs they
get all the way to the Superbowl.

  Once they are down in the thick warm air of California or Florida for the
Superbowl they get crushed.

    the broncos problem is they refuse to get those huge guys you need on

    	Funny you should mention HOOT and the Parrot Brews.  Denny and
    I were telling a friend about him Sunday.  Things like how the
    Immaculate Reception game was a fraud because Three Rivers Stadium

    refs reversed the touchdown call and the infamous Bo Jackson flak
    jacket game (which HOOT saw on his special satellite dish).  Man,

I talked with Hoot just the other day, He is the one working at 
Hamilton Standard something about Engine reverse thrusters on 737's. 
No really it's the little air bag deployment systems for the passengers on 
747's in case Jake really lets one rip in the passenger compartment 

Raiders pick was 33-20 not even close for the Bronco's. 

He has been out on the weekends Bow hunting/deer and fishing near Alma. For you 
eastern people Alma is a great town about 2000 yards long with a Bar and a 
gas station in the middle. The guy is pretty humble after a 0-2 start but is 
as confident as ever that the Faids will win this one. 


My prediction 

Denver dominates the game leads 23-14 into the 4th Raiders score 2 TD's + 2 
point conversions to lead 30-23. BBJ drives for a driving TD with 2 seconds 
remaining. Wrong wat Wade Phillips goes for the 2 point conversion and the 
31-30 win is a last second loss to the Raiders 30-29.

The logo was original (1960) season, I think.

I don't know for sure, but my guess would be 1960 because you rarely see
that logo in any of the old AFL footage, so it had to be damned early....

    i can't believe all the mental mistakes the broncos are making. On that
    last drive they had Milburn all alone in the end zone and that Russell
    run to the three if he had just looked left he had a huge path to
    the end zone. and on that last throw of the game I was watching the
    end zone and there was no one open, he should have run. Elways not 
    getting any blame in the press but he should be, he's making rookie
    mistakes, like zeroing in on one receiver. Plus he was lucky the Bills
    dropped at least four ints.

  I've got a feeling that this is Mr Ed's last season. He just doesn't look
  like the same guy who made all of those miracle comebacks.
