We all know that Hawk was joking when he said he would handle the Patriots
Day game.......


So, I'm sort of volunteering, but there is one condition.  I do not know
if the Ticket Office will take American Express.   If they do, I'll volunteer
to organize the Patriots Day game, and I'll print out the rules here.

If they don't take Amex, sorry, but someone else will have to do it.....

This is the official Patriots Day Red Sox Game ticket announcement.


April 19, 1993 is Patriot's Day.  I just checked with the Box Office and
there are plenty of Bleacher Seats available at $7 per ticket.


Here are the rules:


	1. If you want tickets, send me a check and enclose a
	   Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope.   No SASE, I'll tear
	   up the check.  I do not want to hand deliver tickets
	   at the Rat that morning.

  	   The cost is $7/ticket.


	2. As soon as the tickets arrive, I will send them out to you.


	3. Since I'm volunteering for this, I'll leave it up to
	   others of you to contact former noters no longer @ DEC.

	If you are coming from the North, head south on Route 3, and take the

	Rte. 110 - Chelmsford exit - it's before you get to 495 interchange.
	Take a right at the bottom of the exit ramp - you will go by a
	Cinema on your left, the Chelmsford Mall on your left, and
	the Ground Round is on your left a little further up...

	Don't take the 110 - Lowell exit.

It was a rather sedate get together, as TCM, Dennis

Talked centered on baseball, SPORTS, and other

A short get together, but it was good to meet Dennis.

Due to the recent bad news in the file, a few of us had a chance to get
together last evening at the OPP.

One of the things that came out of the get together was a suggestion that
we have semi-regular get-togethers (for no other reason than getting together).

I kind of like that idea.  In the past we've always seemed to need a reason
like someone leaving or someone being in from out of town.  Well, I think
it'd be cool if say every other month (or sooner or longer) we had
a get together at the OPP or some other central place just to have some
drinks and have some fun.

What do you think?

    Gawd, I need a road trip.  If'n it hadn't been fer the snow falling,
    and having to drive 10-12 hours each way, I woulda accompanied all of
    ya lasted night.  I was set on making the trip, and heading back right
    after a cup of coffee or two at OPP, plus a box or three of NO-DOZE,
    but the weather was too fouled up between Pgh and Mass. to chance that
    650-700 miles each way within 24 hours.
    
    Re "Live at the OPP", we gots to find out what night the old
    farts(sorry Lee, no offense) are going to be there, ya know, the ones
    that sit around the piano and swoon over the jerk...er....guy playing,
    whilst singing as far out of tune as possible.  Maybe we'll have to

I just got off the phone with someone I heard speak at a youth sports banquet
afew years back.  I ran into him last night and we got to talkin about SPORTS.
I mentioned the get together on the 27th.  As it turns out he lives in this 
area (north-central MASS) and just asked me if the get together was still
on.  This guy is real down to earth and will talk sports till he's blue
in the face.  Has anybody heard of Dick Radditz (sp?)?  He was a relief
pitcher for the BoSox in the 60's (I think).  I told him I'd get back to him 
when I make sure there is going to be a get together.  

Hopefully we can get a big turn out.

I know that some of you from the Pats day gathering must be wondering
where your tickets are.  Well, I'm wondering the same thing myself.
I had them on my desk, and next thing you know......


SERIOUSLY though, I have not sent out the tix cause one daidbeat still 
owes me money.

On the off chance that the money came in the mail over the last two
days when my mailbox was down (a victim of a plowdriver on PCP)
I'll send the tickets out by or over this coming weekend.....

    That's *Radatz*, you goofballs. ;-)  The guy's practically a living
    sports legend around these parts.  For 3-4 years he was one of the best
    relief pitchers baseball has ever seen, and if it hadn't been for the
    abusive way that relievers were treated in those days, he'd be one of
    the all-timers, right there with Fingers and Gossage and the rest.
    
    And if he shows I'm gonna be kicking myself for not being able to

Well, I would be interested in talking some serious hoops during the hoopla
and my roommate, despite being a Purdon't alum, is no fan of basketball and 
is very upset that I am considering watching basketball during a new episode
of Star Trek. So mebbee I'll stop by.

But the current plan is this.  Since my sister is a Purdontian, and
is a season's tickets holder, she can get tickets from the Purdue allotment
for the Meadowlands games. So I will probably have her Fed Ex me the tickets
and go watch the Boilers play Arkansas, and get a UMASS!!! game to boot.

    I well remember Dick Radatz.  I wasn't a Sox fan, but you had to
    appreciate what this guy did back then.  
    
    He was severly overused because he was the main draw (along with Teddy
    Ballgame) and was one of the FEW positive things that the Sox had going
    for them.

    I took a look in the old encyclopedia last night to verify my statement
    that Radatz was as dominant a relief pitcher as there ever was (and not
    another Sam Malone, JaKe!) for 3-4 years, and indeed, from 1962-65 the 
    guy saved 100 games, under the old rules and usage, plus added another 
    *49* wins.  One year he pitched over 150 innings and struck out over
    180 batters.  He was consistently posting ERAs in the high 1's and 
    low 2's and striking out 10-11 batters per nine innings.  "The Monster" 
    was simply awesome.  You guys had better be respectful (cuz I bet he 
    could still stomp any one a yas...)

    For three years aboslutely awesome; bubble broke in 64 all star game
    when Callison homered.  Dick threw duster at Rodgers then of Angels
    now Expos manager - most frightening thing I ever saw.  May have been
    precursor to Tony C beaning.

    the Mick used to fake hangover sickness late in the game to get out of

    Radatz never threw a curve; it was high heat and low heat and 
    hang loose - at the end of his run he started with some spin and change
    of speed but he had basically the big three years.
    
    If he could have hit bigs a few years earlier he might have had more
    hall of fame years - ? YAZ had 3 max hall of fame years, 21 fair to
    good ones;  Radatz had 3 hall of fame years and he was THE BEST. Dizzy
    Dean made HofF because he was GREAT 31-37.  If you have to name greatest
    stopper ever DR is on list - perhaps two more top years and he would
    be a candidate.
    
    	I can just imagine being a college player and facing him as he was
    still getting his control - ouch

I remember the day the pathetic Sox traded the ol' Monster.  He had kinda lost
it by then, and they sent him to Cleveland for Lee Stange and Don McMahon.  
Stange ended up pitching a lot of innings, none too great and McMahon combined 
with John Wyatt to be a pretty good 1-2 closer combination.  Anmazingly enough, 
not a bad trade for the Sox.

    I'll tell ya what gives. Here I am sitting at home watching Channel
    5's Chronicle show wif that maroon Globo reporter Mike "Scrape"
    Barnicle down at the BoSox fantasy camp in Fla. Well, who do I see
    sitting next to Barnicle but the ol' Monster hisself, Dick Radatz.
    Now I know this show was taped a coupla weeks ago, but it was mentioned
    that the Monstah and other Sox alumni would be remaining in Fla till
    spring season was over. Well Hardy Har Har!  Also a friend_a_mine heard
    Radatz being interviewed by some foolish talk-show host from sunny
    Bradenton.  Hmmmmmmm. Methinks Dick Radatz was as close ta the OPP
    last Friday as I am to Amelia Earhart's watery grave!
    
    What we have heeyah is a dang hoax of almost epic proportion as when
    SubwayChris got caught in a FixScam!  If I had enuf energy, I'd bring
    Mssr. Long up on charges.  Seems like time fer another Trial!

a resounding success.  I had a blast.

Since Bill Long did such and excellent job of getting a special guest
star for this past get together, we'll have someone else do it this time....8^)

As far as I'm concerned, it's ok to post this reply. :-)

Once I finally got to the first "for the halibut" get together, I had a
great time. There were still 4 folks left when the airline finally
released me from its clutches and I made my appearance. The rest of you
wimps missed the evidence that the far southern reaches were experiencing
ice and snow, rather than their more normal fire and brimstone. Ask Kev
or Jake for details. :-) [If they've already given this weather report,
I'd love for someone to extract and mail it to me.]

Turns out that I may make the next one......Believe It,,,Or Not. I'm
*supposed* to be in Boston that week for a class. It's already been
cancelled once, but if I'm anywhere close, I'll be there.

Trivia question - probably best repeated wherever Brits are most likely to
be hanging out these days. A group was discussing the Monty Python credits
over dinner, and we were pondering the derivation and meaning of the term
"eights". It is probably (in the opinion of my Chicago-based bunch of
yahoos) a cricket term. Any elucidation which can be provided would be
greatly appreciated.

Okay, this is for all ticket holders who are going to the Pats Day
game.

It's gonna be just a little bit long before the tickets arrive.


Perhaps you've heard me talk of my mail carrier (you know, the one
who has the IQ that hovers around room temperature -- CELSIUS room
temperature!).

Well, earlier this week I put all the envelopes with tickets into the
mail (read that my mailbox) and put the flag up and went off to work.

Got home, and on that particular day found my neighbors mail in my
box.  Trucked down the road to his house to give it to him, and
came back, wondering when MY mail would arrive.

Everything was fine for a couple of days.

Last night, after I'd been home, I get a knock on the door.  It's 
Carney, the guy who runs the golf course next door to my house.   He
hands me (yep, you guessed it) a stack of envelopes (yes, they ALL were
there).

Seems that earlier this week, all of the envelopes I sent out, somehow
arrived in the golf course mail, unpostmarked.  Carney was wicked busy
(so he said) and last night was the first chance he had to stop.

So, nexted time the envelopes are going into a REAL mailbox (you know
the kind with the little door in the front, painted red and blue).

Later this morning, I'm going to call my post office and complain
about this BOOB again!


Sorry for the delay.   I guess this deal with the tickets and the USPS
was doomed ever since /Don's envelope came all torn up, in a plastic
bag.....

I called the Post Office this morning, and complained to the Postmaster.

I was told that the carrier for my route is a new carrier, still learning
the route, and since it's a very large route, it's easy to make mistakes.

    Service way above and beyond the call of duty can result in a 
    Miracle.  This is a brief summary of Miraculous service that went 
    around the world.  Jeff Riggen of Remote Sales Support pulled 
    together this Miracle Team after receiving a desperate plea from a 
    sales representative in Ayre, Scotland.  Timing was critical, as 
    there was a need to locate a Ciprico Controller board and have it 
    shipped to Scotland for a major customer demonstration.  Jeff 
    tapped into his Friday night network and began this miraculous 
    effort.  A very complex series of events took place as well as 
    interesting issues, i.e., locating and purchasing the board, 
    securing passport numbers, shipping the board overseas, and 
    obtaining export numbers necessary to release the board from 
    customs, just to name a few.  
    
    This event was a "Miracle"!  Exceptional service on a weekend to 
    help a Sales Rep in need from the other side of the world.  The

Just got back on line  - moving my office today, and if I waited for the 
site people to re-hook up my WS, I'd be out of luck for days...

It was a great day to sit in the bleachers yesterday, but wicked, wicked hot 
for marathoning.  Everyone I know was 5 to 15 minutes off their normal pace.
I ran 3:05 myself.

It was great to see youse guys cheering me.  I saw Kev and Dickstah on the 
left, and Walt and somebody else who knew my name on the right.  Sorry I 
missed MikeL, Glenn, 'Saw, etc.

My friend Chris ran, and he actually ran a good race.  He had wanted to
break 3, but ran a 3:01:29.  He said he realized he'd have had to run the
last 1.2 at a 5 minute pace to break 3 hours.

His quads are tight, and he's gonna lose his big toenail on his left
foot, but other than that he felt pretty good.   He said the heat was
a big factor in the race.


Congrats on a great race (to me, even finishing in that heat took a helluva
effort).

If you're not in training at the next get together, I'll buy you a
congratulatory beer....(or a club soda).....

If there is anyone interested in a road trip, I have an opportunity
available to see one of baseball's classic venues (at its anathema time
of day). I have a pair of tickets to two night games at Wrigley Field in
Chicago. *ONE* seat for each game is available to anyone who wants to
attend the game with me. The first game is on Thursday evening, July 15,
Cubs vs. the Rockies. The second game is on Monday evening, July 26, Cubs
vs. San Diego. If we have any Chicago area RONs, feel free to contact me.

For anyone actually doing this as a road trip, I am willing to discuss
lodging requirements. Chicago can be a fun city, with more to do than you
might immediately imagine. (Keep in mind, I have an apartment in the
Chicago area, and I spend weekends back in Massachusetts). The seats are
in the upper boxes - which I have never occupied. I'm assured that they
are pretty good seats.

No promises on how I'll decide who gets to join me if more than one person
is interested in coming. I just hope *someone* will be interested and I
won't be left scalping the extra tickets. :-) Best way to reach me is via

    with the Ruggers.  He said "no".  Things were fairly tame.  I think
    it had alot to do with the beer prices, quick innings, and good game.

    Makes me proud the kid's already following in his Dad's(faith)
    footsteps. BTW, in 12 years and two months, he'll be 16 years old, and
    will want to drive, and judging by the incident the other day involving
    him, a big wheel, and a neighbor kid, I'll never be able to afford the

the Quebec NOrdiques....  He graciously bought a round for the
group and answered questions.    Contrary to what some attnedees
thought, he did NOT leave because I challenged him to duke it

You know MIke, I must've burned some brain cells last night,
because I remember talking about that, but the "seed" of the
essay escapes me.

At any rate, we decided that since hockey allows helmets, and visor,
and since all the REAL men who play hockey are long gone, and since
we're left with "image is everything" one-dimensional hockey players
like Mario, and Jaromir Jagr, that we might as well let folks
like Brian Boitano play hockey.

After that, it's just a short leap of the imagination to picture
Dick Button doing color:  "And, oh my, he was resplendant on that
double axle while he scored that goal".

When a little pipsqueak, all of 5'9", hits a guy who's 6'6" and
repidiated to be a man, and the 6'6" guy does a Greg Louganis
with a Dick Button twist, you know that the sport of hockey
has reached an all time low....

Yep, bring on Dick Button, Brian Boitano, and that little guy
who used to skate to "Theme from Rocky".....

I don't deplore the violence in hockey.  While I don't think that the
benches should clear at every small instance, and I don't think that 
players should be using their sticks when they fight, I don't mind seeing
two guys go at it.  

At any rate, it's better than seeing Mr. One Dimensional do a Louganis
every time he gets brushed by a leetle pesky player......

holiday and vacation action) or two have one sooner (June), and then

So, after consulting my crystal ball, divining information from my astronomical
charts, reading some tea leaves, and casting some dice, I determined by
highly scientific and accurate methods, that our nexted get together

But, I do have to admit that the concept of  T-ball hadn't really been invented
back then.  Well, not organized anyway.   A lot of the fathers had improvised
"T's" to help their kids hit.

Another thing I remember, and it was a bitch of an exercise, was taking a
broomstick or part of a shovel handle, cutting to about an 18" length, drilling
a hold though it which you put a piece of rope through and knotted.

The other end you tied a weight to. 

Then, you'd stand with your back to the wall, arms out straight grasping the
stick, and you'd roll the weight up (kind of like a winch rolls the cable
around it).

It was supposed to strengthen your forearms.  It was a bitch of an exercise....
