    times the distance between them, to find the north star (the $ in the
    diagram).  Once you have the north star, look in the area on the other

    and my throat actually tightened in disgust (which is actually not
    an unusual reaction to a television commercial).  Fortunately they
    had the limited good taste to pull the camera away from the guy

    I have no idea why they resurrected this ad.  I can't believe they

        the town government also correct in telling me that I have to put
        my leaves in paper bags instead of plastic bags, because they say

    For paper vs plastic, processing is the difference.  The town wants to
    take your bags of leaves and toss them into the landfill.  In that
    situation, paper bags are better because they decay more readily.  The
    town isn't doing any processing.
    
    I'm not sure what arguments the supermarket is using for plastic bags. 
    I believe my market uses bags made out of recycled plastic, and/or
    plastic bags can be returned for recycling.  I go with plastic because
    I use them for cleaning out the litter boxes.

    Come to think of it, I would have preferred Mitzi Gaynor to Mitzi
    Kapture.

    Paper bags in a sanitary landfill will be there for a few nanoseconds 
    less than plastic or about forever.  There is no air (oxygen) to support
    microbial action therefore no decompostition.  Uless of course your town 
    does composting for yard refuse then paper is better.  If they are
    incinerated, plastic will burn clean and provide a good source of fuel
    to help sustain the incineration prrocess, far better than paper or the
    yard refuse itself.
    
    Plastic bags are far cheaper for the supermarket and are readily recycled 
    by throwing them into the hopper with virgin feed stock at the bag mill.  
    They take up far less storage space, can be loaded on racks for easy
    dispensing and tend not to rip as easily especially when wet.  Plastic 
    bags will not decompose in a landfill and therefore will not leech any 
    toxins into the environment as they are chemically stable and therefore 
    inert for all practical purposes.  Paper recycling is inherently a far 
    dirtier process especially if the paper has to be de-inked.  It's a toss 
    up to say which is dirtier, paper processing or the refining of oil to 
    make the resins for the plastic bags.  Both materials depend upon the 
    existence of recycling facilities and the infrastructure to collect, sort, 
    and deliver the materials to the recycler.  
    
    Personally, I hate plastic bags as they have no structural strength
    and all my goods usually end up rolling around in my trunk.  I can also
    burn the paper ones in my fireplace when I make a fire along with my
    junk mail.  
    
    To really gauge the which is better argument, you have to go back and
    look at which is more destructive, deforestation and pulping operations 
    or pumping oil (includes exploration etc.) and the refining operations.  
    
    To be environmentally correct at the grocery store, pick up the
    shipping cartons from shelves and use those to transport your stuff. 
    Bring old bags from home.  Buy or make mesh or cloth bags that can be
    used and even repaired almost indefinitely.  Avoid using separate
    plastic bags for you vegetables by shopping in a store that weighs your
    stuff at the register.

	his 16-year old daughter told him that she had been raped by
	his ex best friend when she was 12 (perhaps raped repeatedly, i'm
	not sure).  within a half hour of hearing that, he called his
	friend up and concocted a reason for them to meet.  he stole
	a gun from another friend, drove the guy to a deserted building,
	took him around back, pulled the gun out, and told his friend to
	pray for himself for what he had done. his friend denied it.
	he shot him in the head with a 22.  then emptied the gun into
	him.  he then got in touch with a local teevee station and told
	them he wanted to confess.  his reason - he wanted to tell the
	victim's family that he was sorry for their pain but that this
	man had ruined his daughter's life, and he didn't want anything
	like this to happen to anyone else's daughter.  the reason he
	took the law into his own hands - he had no faith in the judicial
	system.

	apparently, his defense will be temporary insanity.  he was
	in a rage.

    case, as soon as the judge heard i'd been a witness in a case involving

    Chelsea, no, I break the law regularly.  I actually speed on my bicycle
    almost every day.  I would never convict anybody for that, though. 
    There's a difference.
    
    It's a matter of morals.  In picking my daughter for a victim, a rapist
    can count on dying.  The morality is that I would not punish a person
    for something I would do.  You may have a different morality.

    testimony.  i do think they made the right decision, but it would not

	I really do believe in the theory that there are "morning" people
	and "night" people.  I am a night owl and have been since grade 11 
	or so when my parents stopped giving me a "bedtime".  I never used
	to even start my homework until after 10 or 11pm and usually went
	to bed around 1:00am. My best studying always took place really 
	late at night. Now I usually stay up until 2-2:30 - my family and
	friends think I'm crazy, but I can get by (without resembling a
	zombie) on about 5 hours sleep.  I've learned not to pick up a 	
	book to read in bed because sometimes I get so absorbed that 	
	before I know it the bedroom is getting light cause the sun is
	coming up and then I only have 1-2 hours sleep! Course this will all 
	probably change if I ever have a kid who won't sleep at night - 
	that's when my body will finally admit to itself that it's been 
	sleep deprived all these years and boy... will I be in trouble!

    I like Seinfeld's routine where he was talking about how night guy is
    always wrecking day guy's life and how day guy can never really get
    back at night guy for staying up late and partying. For some reason I
    related quite well to it. I have a hate/hate relationship when it comes
    to going to bed [oo er]. I hate going to bed, and I hate getting out of
    bed.

    Yes, it is illegal in most/many states including the PRM.  Reminds me
    of a time when I was coming home from a race on Lake Champlain.  My
    tape deck was not working and in the nether regions of VT radio
    reception consists of farm reports and evengelistas.  I donned my
    headphones.  Coming around a bend in I-89, there were two of VT's
    finest on the side of the road with an instant on hand held radar gun. 
    My detector lit up, I nearly peed my pants and zoomed by them with my
    mouth wide open thinking I'm toast.  They merely put moved their hands
    in an up and down motion so as to indicate I should slow down a tad. 
    The moment before the detector went off, I had looked at the speedo and
    it was indicating somewhere in the neighborhood of 85.  They never
    pursued and I didn't stop.  Did slow down a tad though.

    I believe it is possible to safely drive a car with headphones on. I
    guess it's a question of ability and using your eyes. There are a lot

	Andy, car stereo's will have the same effect as headphones. A friend of
mine was going down the highway and this cop was behind him for quite some
time. The blues went on and he pulled over. The cop asked him why he didn't
pull over sooner as he had his siren on. He yelled back at the cop that he was
a kid, and so his stereo was up loud. He told the cop if he wanted him to pull
over to be smart about it and use the blues. How he got away with out a ticket
is beyond me, but it kind of lets you know that headphones and stereo's should
be BOTH allowed.

    Mind you, on my way to fatso's house in Marryland, I did find myself
    on the side of the freeway discussing current events with a Virginia
    State Trooper.  I had a trunkfull of explosives, a firearm, a whole

    I was looking at a "Life Cycle" (a high-tech stationery monocycle),
    since I really have no opportunity for other exercise. On the front
    of the Life Cycle was a nine-pin D-sub connector. I asked the
    salesdroid what it was for, and he responded that it connected to
    a Nintendo system! Apparently, you can use the buttons on the
    electronic panel on the Life Cycle as a control pod for the
    Nintendo! So, while you pedal away filet mignon with sauce
    bernaisse, you can get to a new level in Mario Bros as well!
    
    Further, they have games that emulate being in a bicycle race.
    
    If all this is possible, why can't I just tell the machine I want

A friend of mine is with a startup company down in Bedfid, PRM developing
a new multi-media PC game (if you see the "Virtual Guitar" in the PC stores,
that's theirs).

For their holiday entertainment this past weekend they tossed a powered up
PC running a custom-made video out of the third floor office windows to the
pavement below.

I was out of my office for awhile.  When I returned,
I noticed something, looked like the corner of a
piece of paper, sticking out of one of my desk
drawers.

I opened the drawer and discovered it to be the 
"back" side of a polaroid photo.  Figured it must
be something of mine, since I've been hanging some
photos, etc., on my walls today.  (A little
decorating frenzy on my part, since I moved into
this office just about a month ago.)

Flip the photo over, and oops!  It's a picture of
the guy who *used* to have this office (he's no
longer with Digital).  He's got a beer bottle in
one hand, and the other hand's on the shoulder of
a topless dancer or stripper.

Yes, folks, there she is, in full frontal glory,
wearing nothing but a cowboy hat, a G-string, and
(I suspect) a LOT of silicone.

    blues fans.  i prefer john lee hooker.  prolly the single best blues
    album i've ever heard is john lee's "alone," just him and his guitar.

re the two-week old discussion on driving with headphones [I'm catching up]:

Why is it illegal to drive with headphones but legal to drive with your
stereo blasting?  You can hear better with Walkman-style headphones at
a reasonable volume than with a few hundred watts of surround-sound.

    not all headphones are walkperson-style; some are designed to exclude
    as much external sound as possible.  you want the cops to make yet
    another judgment call on whether your headset meets sound-transmission
    guidelines???

    It is not legal to drive with your stereo blastin in many localities if
    at all.  Local police have started citing whoompa cars as public
    disurtbances.  There are also laws in some towns/states that require
    reasonable levels to be maintined so you can hear when the nice
    ossifer is pulling you over.

    The laws passed against "head phones" for need - the "head phones" were
    enclosure types which definately reduced hearing.  Then again, you
    would expect that laws to also cover cars that don't allow a certain
    amount of outside ambient sound in, but that's besides the point.
    (It would be "class warefare" to pass a law agin a caddy, but it's not
    "class warefare" to pass a law agin a junkbox with no radio.)
    
    When Walkman-style (open air) "head phones" came in, they met the
    definition of "head phones" in existing laws, so they are covered
    by them.
    
    You can guess for yourselves if Walkman-style "ear buds" are legal or
    illegal.
    
    
    And while we are at it, anyone else think it's a bad idea for radio
    stations to broadcast a siren?  (Granted, my car only has rear
    speakers, so maybe I'm a little more miffed about this than other

    Sushi bars... I saw my Sushi guy step out with this HUMONGOUS side of
    fish [Maguro - one of my favorites] and KNOW it must've taken years for
    that fish to get *that* big.. well I think... anybody know?
    
    Anyways, if it does take a long time... how long before the oceans
    resources are depleted?  I mean will Maguro become extinct?

   That depends on how tasty it is...

    People have already taken a liking to it!!! It's like one of the most
    popular fishes for Sushi...

    	New England cod, haddock, pollock, winter flounder, etc...
    	Bluefin tuna, many shark species...
    
    	for all you sushi lovers, I would give tuna another 10-20 years before

    The tuna used for sushi are quite large and not what you find in cans. 
    The albacore and yellow fin are different from the really big ones 
    snatched up by sushi purveyors.  Think 500+ lbs.  These are usually hunted
    individually versus harvested in nets and schools.  Landing one can net
    the fisherperson several thousands of dollars, cash on the spot. 
    Within a very short time, they are usually on a plane to somewhere to
    be served up raw.  They are truly beautiful animals in the wild.

	I called a friend of mine at work last week and found they have this new
phone system. It says to punch in the 1st 4 letters of the persons last name,
and it will transfer the call. I did that and it said that it was wrong. I
ended up calling him at home over the weekend and he told me he doesn't work
there anymore, that he was fired. They called him in and told him that they
really didn't have a good reason to do this, but that they were going to do it
anyway. He works with the mentally retarded, trying to teach them to function
in society. I say try to teach because the clients he has are the ones with
behavioural problems. I've seen him many times with scratches all over his
arms, bruises, etc. They try many different teaching programs to help the
clients. Some work, some don't. His new manager had several ideas on how to try
and teach the clients. He explained to her that these methods have been tried
before, but failed. She said she wanted to do it anyway. He kept questioning
her on the parts that failed before, and her answer was just do it. Well, he
wasn't about to try something that has already failed and put the clients at
risk, so he went over her head and got the programs stopped. From this point on
was the start of the end. His manager kept going up the chain of command to get
him fired. Everyone she went to said no. That was until she went to the Area
Director. So in the meeting they had to fire him, which his manager did not 
attend, personnel told him what his manager gave for reasons to get him fired 
(in written form). She had said he brought the morale of the people he works 
with down (yet they cried when they found out he was fired), parents were
worried about him as a teacher (yet he has all these letters from parents
praising him on what he was able to accomplish), something to do with personnel 
(which the woman from there told him that she was on his side), and problems 
scheduling (he asked for help scheduling twice in one week because the clients 
were going off too often and he didn't have time). They told him this would look
bad if he were fired, as 7 years of working would be wasted. They gave him an 
option, resign or be terminated. He told them he would not resign, they would 
have to terminate him. At that point the woman fired him, but then said, "I 
wonder why they are handing you a lawsuit on a silver platter???" 

	I wonder what made her say that???

   to Ireland to escape taxes on my income as a writer (my preferred
   method, Mike 8^), and -- just to keep in touch -- I get a satellite dish
   and aim it at the US birds, will my PAL television set give me a picture
   from the NTSC signal or will it fail to translate it?

    it will fail to translate it.  pal and ntsc are entirely incompatible. 
    you can, however, buy vcrs that can read one format and write another.
