GOJIRA::PHILPOTT "Ian F. ('The Colonel') Philpott" 71 lines 22-MAR-1987 12:01
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having been here [New Hampshire] for a while I have decided to re-post my
intro (below) and expand a little.
Firstly the cultural thing: I am not American, I have no idea of the stresses
and life patterns created by growing up in America in the latter half of the
20th Century. Rather I grew up in Britain. During my early formative years I
spent my time either with my maternal grandparents (who ran a Public House in
Liverpool's dockland - it was here I went to school) and my paternal
grandparents (who had a farm in Scotland).
My "language of the hearth" is Erse [Irish Gaelic], and thanks to the d**ned
English school system I have lost it (you'd lose it too if you got caned for
breaking into Erse in an argument). The main heritage is an awkward style and
a difficulty in presenting my views clearly in written form unless I go over
it time and time again which destroys spontaneity.
It has also given me the pedantry over words that most people develop in a
foreign language (that one has gotten me a few flames since I found this
conference :-)
During early schooling I attended a boarding school (what in England is
called a prep school - a totally different meaning to that in America of
course). After I reached the grand old age of 8 I went to live with my
parents (I was now considered old enough to travel, my Father being regular
army seconded to the Diplomatic Service). Over the next few years I lived in
(and went to school in) Israel, West Germany, Libya, Algeria, Italy, Greece,
Japan and America (going to school in Washington DC was fun - I even got to
play American grid-iron football). This has left me with a cosmopolitan
attitude, a hatred of xenophobic attitudes, and a difficulty in
understanding parochial attitudes. *and* a desire to live and work in
America.
I have always loved travel and have now been in all 48 of the continental US
states.
Hobbies: I collect books, records and guns. (I also hate the idea of "trophy"
hunting - I am strictly a target shooter.) In the past I have been "into" a
number of active sports (Tae Kwon jitsu, Ninjitsu, and Karate, plus a few
more exotic ones on the physical level - motor racing and rally driving as
motor sports, and of course at school I played Rugby and Cricket)
Professionally, I've been a teacher, professional photographer, army
officer, and a database design consultant in my time... I'm now a Principal
Maintainability Engineer in CSSE/BSG/SwEET based in Spit Brook Road, Nashua,
NH. I am the "layered product liaison officer" for the DECwindows program.
Why did I ramble on? because I wanted to say that I am a complex mixture of
all the things my upbringing, heritage and cultural background make me.
If I offend, it may be because I didn't understand, or that I didn't express
myself correctly. Feel free to tell me why I erred (preferably by mail -
educating Ian is boring to most of the readership, I think).
ciao,
Incidentally though I *was* a Lieutenant Colonel my "the colonel" nickname
dates back to my teenage days, and has to do with a role I played in a "Wild
West Show".
=========================================================================
Since the above was written I got married: I will from time to time enter
notes for my wife, designated by the signature "/. Ann .\" - I'll put a short
bio in the women's intro for her.

I'm interested in this conference because (like Dave Butenhof)

be one

and because I believe that "women's" issues overlap strongly
with other issues of personal freedom. I expect to be primarily

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
My name is Tony Purmal and I'm one of the small number of west coast
DEC employees. I am a software engineer for the Software Services
Engineering/Pacific Systems Group located in Mountain View, CA.
I'm married to Lesely, a unique and wonderful woman. We have an
almost two year old son named Colin who is also unique and wonderful.
I am in this conference to listen and learn, and when I feel as
if I have anything pertinent to add I'll do so. I have read about
half of the base notes in the conference and at least 25% of the
replies so far. I am going to get the unseen notes down to zero
before you see any replies from me though. I have been informed,
saddened, appaled, amazed, encouraged, puzzled, and angered by the
notes that I've read so far, but I feel that the notes have been
worth my time.

Update 6/9/88
Things haven't changed that much for me, but things around me are
growing at an astounding pace. There are many more DEC personnel
and facilities out here, and our group is growing too. We are
"living" in the Cupertino building until our new building in Mountain
View is completed in August (we hope). I hope to continue to read
and learn and sometimes write in this conference.

3.8 | | AKOV11::BOYAJIAN | Monsters from the Id | Fri Jun 10 1988 06:08 | 32 |
| Well, I never introduced myself in the previous version, but what
the hey.
I'm Jerry Boyajian, currently Third Shift Supervisor in F&A/DIS
(or whatever they're calling it this week) Operations in Acton
(Nagog). Since the bulk of my job is to recover from the mess
when things go wrong, I get to spend a fair amount of time in
Notes.
Why do I read this conference? Well, I was pointed here by someone
who thought I might be interested in a particular discussion, and
I ended up staying when I found a number of interesting topics.
Mostly, I'm interested in "what makes women tick", to endeavor
to understand their point of view. To that end, I tend to mostly
just read, though I'm not above pontificating when the spirit
moves me.
My interests include reading and collecting books (mostly science
fiction) and comics, watching movies, listening to music, and
playing guitar. I'm also a bibliographer of semi-professional
standing. Last, but not least, I love to drive. I've been known
to drive (with one other person switching off on the driving)
from Boston to Minneapolis and back again just to attend a party.
My personal best for non-stop (except for pit stops, of course)
driving is 26-1/2 hours. My latest educational project (into which
I'm not putting near as much effort as I should) is to learn to
read Japanese.
To paraphrase writer Anne McCaffrey, "I have brown hair and brown
eyes; the rest is subject to change without notice."

Note 7.94 Introductions From Men 94 of 158
FDCV03::ROSS 24 lines 12-AUG-1987 14:22
-< Introduction >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since I have been reading many of the notes in this conference,
and lately have taken to writing in a few, I guess it's time for
me to introduce myself, also.
My name is Alan Ross. I am a Business Systems Consultant in the
US/DIS group in PKO3. I've been with DEC for almost 9 years, live
in Sharon.
One of the main reasons for my reading notes in this conference
is to get more of a sense about women's feelings, both as they
relate to men and to society in general.
Because I feel women are not as afraid of opening up as are men,
I think a more complete picture of us complicated humans - and the
gamut of our hopes, fears, anger and other emotions - will be obtained
by reading, and sometimes writing, notes in this conference.
I recognize that some topics are "women only" issues. In these I'll
try not to intrude, unless I feel I *really* have something to say,
which can add value to the discussion. If I do seem to be an intruder
at these times, please let me know.
Alan

Updated: 10 June 1988
Not too much to update, other than I will have been at DEC almost 10
years (on 5 September).
Reading back some of the comments I made in my debut intro, I didn't
realize, then, how phrophetic a couple of my thoughts might turn
out to be......

| In an effort to help you understand me, and vice versa...
My name is Mike Boutcher. I'm a four-year employee of DEC and
am currently the US Central Area Environmental Support Engineer
out of Chicago. I started as a field service engineer with accounts
at the steel mills in Gary, IN and the Commonwealth Edison nuclear
power plants, then worked my way up. Prior to Digital I spent 8
years in the US Naval Nuclear Power field as an electrician, chemist
and reactor plant supervisor aboard submarines, aircraft carriers
and as an instructor at a nuclear power training unit in Idaho.
My personal life involves my loving wife Terri, our two boys,
Chris and Aaron (2yr and 3yr old), and our two cocker spaniels,
Gypsy and Lady.
I'm still a conscientious objector to the FWO strings and am
anxiously awaiting the outcome of the upcoming meetings. I really
do enjoy relating to experiences of and about women. The female
is so complex and interesting that I sometimes wonder what they
need to prove. The more I read, the more I learn. The more I ask,
the more I learn. I love to learn, teach me .......

I've been reading =wn= since its inception, have learned a lot, and met
some really neat people. In real life, I talk a lot and try to stir up
trouble. In this crowd, however, it's hard to keep up with the pace and
the level of discussion, so I'm frequently surprised to find myself
being relatively quiet when there's an interesting discussion going on.
Although this is womannotes, and men are in some sense guests, I've
never felt that way. I understand that it's nice to have a "safe"
support group (not just for women), but because I've considered myself
an ardent feminist for a long time I've never felt like an outsider
here.
During the history of =wn=, I've stopped reading for various periods of
time. Generally, that's been because I've gotten tired of reading
meta-discussions (discussions of how discussions will be handled).
I've never been able to leave completely, and I've always slogged
through the hundreds or thousands of notes that were unseen upon my
return.
I've been at Digital for 7 years and 6 days now (not that I'm
counting), and it's gone by pretty quickly. I currently work in the AI
Technology Group, although I'm actually working with the VAX SPM group
up in Nashua instead of being with my own group in DLB. I'm waiting for
two unofficial job offers to become official, hopefully sometime this
week. I could be in LKG (in NaC) or MLO (in the Human Factors group) as
of 5 July.
In my first introduction, I stated that I'd learned a lot about
feminism from various women in my life. Margaret (another old womanotes
reader) has taught me a lot about that, and about other things as well.
We're going to be married in September after living together for 4
years and being together for 2-1/2 years before that.

the more they stay the same...
I'm still with ISWS, still working in TWO with MEIS, and
considering branching out into other things. I'm still a hopeless
Notes addict and have been reading =wn= since Aug of 86. I've been
to one =wn= party and enjoyed myself and meeting some of my fellow
noters.
I tend to read a lot more than I write.
My views and opinions have been influenced a lot by this conference
and I would hate to see it vanish. I hit next-unseen a lot, but
I re-read the important topics.
Glad to be here...

I find the WOMMANNOTES very enlightening and very interesting.
It's always good to hear other slants of interest and the more we
all better understand where we're all comming from the better off we'll
be. The best thing I like about WOMMANNOTES is the frankness and
the openness of its participants. I for one have been more of

| Hello past, present, and future womannoters! I've been a read-mostly
regular since roughly the beginning, I think. Intro 7.20 in V1,
for those who care to chase down pointers.
Besides my agreeing with the concept that "the file is oriented to the
needs and wishes of women", as =maggie so nicely put it, I'm also a
*really* slow writer and my own worst noting critic. So, I keep pretty
quiet. You'd think all this might cut down on my putting my foot in my
mouth, but 'taint necessarily so :-)
I don't presume to call myself a feminist, but I'm generally in
sympathy with feminist ideals. Besides this conference, I get a
wealth of exposure particularly from a wonderful sister (the
blood-related kind.) I'm fond of Women's Music, as it's called
(as well as pretty near every other flavor.)
Other interests include cars (preferably Italian and red), auto
racing (Viva Ferrari!), and the usual variety of outdoorsy stuff.
I work in an engineering group in Laboratory Data Products at MRO,
and live in Westford, MA (by myself, unless ants and the odd mouse
count as residents.)

well as ten other conferences of assorted varieties.
I am a single father to my 4-1/2 year old (at present) son who lives

I have long been interested and supportive of women's rights and
was an early member of the first WOMANNOTES conference. Though
I may have disagreements with some of the policies of this conference,
I do support its purpose and have done what I can to further its
success. I hope that people don't mistake concern for hostility.
Although recent events have discouraged me from participating as
much as I would like, I am going to try to at least follow the
conference so as not to lose out entirely. I consider many of you
my friends, and I only wish prosperity for WOMANNOTES.

Married 14-1/2 yrs.
3 Children - 2 Females 13 and 9 (birthday party tonight at Chuck

Added Womannotes today. Why? Because I like to hear from a different
viewpoint. I was also a supervisor of 45 woman ages 18-66 five years
ago. It was probably one of the most personally rewarding times
of my business and personal life. I learned more about women and
the way that they think and react in those 2 years than I could
ever thought I would. I'm no expert by any means but some of those
employees still call and write to this day, so I guess I must have
impacted their lives too.
Just so that I'm not misunderstood if I should reply to a note or
six. I'm a firm believer in equality in all aspects of work and
life. I'm not an advocate of anyone being more equal because of
race, creed, sex, or national origin. In the event that I should
offend that may the reason, also I tend to be somewhat direct and
try not to make my responses warm and fuzzy.
I hope that my replies will be of value and that my questions aren't
too stupid.

desperately to keep up my house.
Politically, I'm a strong believer in civil liberties and civil
rights. I'm moderately feminist, thinking that much of what
feminists are fighting for is obviously correct, but wishing that
they would spend less time on trivial fights in order to have the
energy to fight the major issues.

I have been with DEC for three, two in customer Ed Services, one
on the District Network Team. Worked on PDP8s in early 70's, started

I'm here to help myself understand the others who so affect my life.
I participate in the following non-work related conferences:
Mennotes, Human Relations, Friends, Star Trek, Model Rocketry,
Naturism, SF, Space, Aerospace, Parenting and Poetry.
The work related ones would be too long to list.
I work in Government Systems Group in Merrimack as a Project Tech.
I have been with DEC for 11.5 years. I have been married for 11
years (Kathy) and have a 6 year old son (Joey) and a 3 year old

I am currently read only, to become familar with the content and
flow of this conference, before I enter into the discussion. Shouldn't
be long. Quite pleased to see conferences of this type, hope to
learn, and perhaps provide a lesson or two.

I'm Guy Novello. I've been with DEC about 2 years.
My marriage has been going strong for 8 years. I have one son

Hello,
I'm Jeff Huson, and I've been reading this conference for about
two years, and since I finally responded for the first time last
week, I thought I would introduce myself.
I work in Marlboro, and have been with DEC for 12 years. I'm
married, and have 3 children. Sara 12, Heather 8, and Joshua 5,
1 dog, 2 cats, and an aquarium.
I perceive myself a survivalist, but have been told I have a
very dim view of life, something I inherited from my father, who
is the same person I get my never smile, emotionless personallity
from. In fact it's sometimes so bad the kids ask me why I never
smile, and I say I don't know.
My hobbies include coin and stamp collecting, hunting, fishing,
camping, and being involved with all my kids activities.
I'm in this conference to understand if there is anything I'm
missing by being the way I am, (which my wife Gwenn refers to as
cold, hard, and heartless) and if I could gain something by having
feelings or showing emotions which I rarely do, steming from childhood
parental teaching. BTW I don't think I'm missing anything, but others
do, so I read and try to understand, and keep everything inside
where it belongs.

Reason for being in this and other similar conferences,
am interested in learning from other peoples experiences
views, opinions so as to form my own views, opinions, and
to avoid the pitfalls of life described here. Am recently
beginning to ponder about the philosophical aspects of life.
For more personal information please see WHOAREYOU note 957
or FRIENDS note 2.307.
Because I am very shy in front of people I am not fimiliar with
at first I have difficulty expressing myself at a personal level
and also find it difficult to start a friendship. (Trying to
overcome this :-)
NOTES utility is a great tool for me because it allows me to
discuss things without being self conscious. It is my third eye

I'm very concerned about women's issues, but unfortunately don't have

3.48 | Bob Armstrong | CADSE::ARMSTRONG | | Mon Oct 10 1988 13:16 | 27 |
| Before replying, I guess I should introduce myself. I've been
a 'read only' noter in this conference for some time now....
I read most of the notes in the first edition of this notes file
(and that took some doing) after being directed to it by
Meigs (Glidewell). I share her enthusiasm for the discussions
and now keep up pretty regularly.
I still am not comfortable with the role that men should play
in this conference. So I've been 'read only', although often
quite tempted to join in. I won't reply often but when I do you'll
know it was important.
Some background.....I joined DEC in 1970 and worked in a variety
of jobs in Engineering. The company has sure changed a lot since
those days. I think that would be an interesting NOTES conference!
In about 1980 I moved from hardware to software engineering and
began working mostly from home, with plans of marrying my SO, Judy,
and raising a family. We spent the next 5 years racheting ourselves
up the infertility medical spiral. I have a lot of information to
share about a variety of high-tech infertility treatments, but in
our case nothing worked. The alternative for us was very clear:
adoption. Since then we have adopted two wonderful children,
Robin and Molly. My main reason for replying to this conference
is to share our adoption experience.
We now live in Western Mass, northwest of Amherst, on a small farm
and have a dog, a horse, and about 75 sheep.

3.51 | Mark Metcalfe | TOKNOW::METCALFE | | Wed Oct 19 1988 16:27 | 32 |
| I am Mark Metcalfe to most; others occasionally delete the explitive.
A software writer (a person who writes computer manuals) for Digitial
for 2 years, and for Wang prior to that for 2 and a half years,
I am an occasional noter who leaves notes alone for days and weeks
and then wastes nearly a whole day on notes when things get slow.
It makes one feel guilty which makes one think this should be in
true confessions.
I added WOMANNOTES-V2 because I am a person who wants to know why
people are the way they are. Getting into the thoughts of women
is of particular interest to me because of my wife, three daughters
(who are fast approaching puberty) and a newborn son. You see,
I am the traditional male role model in the family structure but I am
open to modifying my behavior if it improves relationships. My
familial relationships are exemplary, I think, but the biggest room
in the house must always be the room for improvement.
I appreciate the ability to browse in WOMANNOTES-V2 and I hope to
convey (when and if I make replies) that people with "traditional"
ideals does not necessarily connote close-mindedness but another
difference to be valued.
I am not (like -.1) a strident feminist, nor do my ideals often
seem to align with what I percieve to be the feminist point of
view, but that's okay, because the feminist ideals often do not
seem to align with what they percieve to be my point of view.
My point: there are three sides to every coin (the edge, you know)
and, more aptly, there are many facets to a diamond (or issue).
Will be checking in from time to time.

3.54 | Mark Schmieder, software engineer, Westford MA | REGENT::SCHMIEDER | | Thu Nov 03 1988 11:34 | 36 |
| I made the mistake of reading a few notes in here, so I guess I'm here to
stay. If this conference takes more than twenty minutes a week to keep up
with, though, I'm out of here, as I don't consider overtime an excuse for
following personal notes files.
I've been a feminist since about age 13 or 14. Fortunately, most of the women
in my high school were too, so I was only ostracised by half the school. When
I was in college, though, I felt VERY much alone in my views... and my college
was over half women!
Until recently, I didn't come into contact with many women in my life. In
college, there were never many women in my courses and often were none at all.
In the workplace, about the only women I ran into were secretaries, until
about two years ago when the group I'm in became a little less male-dominated.
I personally believe that much of male-female bonding comes from seeking
balance, and that this was necessitated by the rigid traditional roles that
males and females held in our society for so long. I feel that we can each
reach that balance within ourselves, and that this frees us to create stronger
bonds that are based more on mutual trust, caring and commitment than on what
the other person has to offer us in the way of balance or in the context of
our own personal goals. I believe this is at the heart of the feminist
movement, and is also why there is often such a strong bond between feminism
and the movement for freedom of sexual expression.
But there are clearly some issues that are based on real physical differences
between men and women. Particularly childbirth and related issues. These
issues are probably more important, because they affect ALL women in one form
or another regardless of their own personal choices on lifestyle and career.
These are also the issues that are most in need of addressing by this company,
and so I am choosing to follow this conference to see if there is anything I
can personally do to help bring about change for the many working mothers here
who are carrying the double burden of motherhood and breadearner.

ebb and flow of WN. I hope that I can add some constructive ideas in
a supportive way (something a lot closer to my nature than battles
of logic or flaming replies).
Why am I here? To listen to what concerns women have. To understand
the problems facing women in the workplace. And to understand my own
friendships with women (I married my very best friend, and my other
close friends are mostly women). I'm not here to prove anything,
pass judgement, or get a medal.
As for particulars, I'm 36, have been married for 13 years, have an

I have an Engneering background and for the last 2 years I have
learned Product Management. I also came from a family where my
father rarely spoke openly about his feelings. Like the father
in the telephone commercials.
I have been a =WN= reader for quite a while now. I read more of
V1 as opposed to V2.
I have learned a great deal about Women and about myself as a
Man in today's society. I am happy to say that reading these
notes have made life much better. It has changed my life and
my total perspective on people.
This notes file has helped my relationship with my wife and I
think that I will learn much more as our family grows. :^)
No pun intended...
Thanks,

| Hi!!!
My name is John Heffernan and I work in NAC in Littleton MA having
been with Digital for 4 years. I am a software engineer working on a
product called Terminal Server Manager (TSM).
I am interested in seeing clearly what role my own cultural
conditioning has in my own life. Sometimes when I think I am aware
and "cured" of most of it; I find out that I am not. I am
interested in living a life where all beings are seen as they are
without preconditioned thoughts due to their race, sex, or physical
appearance, political beleifs, sexual preference, or current
life situation.
Currently, I am a practizing Zen Buddhist and meditator and am
interested in so-called sprititual issues. I am also active in the
peace movement and Native American issues. Other interestes are
juggling, running, baking, cooking, and music.
I live in a cooperative household of two men and two women in West
Concord, MA where we have two cats (and one cardboard Flat Cat I just
purchased to round out the collection). There are quite a few women
in my life. I am in a wonderful relationship with a feminist.
Sometimes I have to struggle and understand where her anger on some
issues is coming from. My boss and her boss are women and I have
three women reporting to me. (Am I the token male? ;-)
I have no idea what I will contribute or learn from this conference
but no doubt something will happen.
peace,
john

I have been teased by some co-workers because of the four positions
I've had to fill since accepting my current position, I have hired four

individual not gender specific). This conference gives me insight
into dealing with my staff, which I greatly appreciate. Were I single,
separating business from personal relations might be difficult! :-)

3.74 | Joel Finkel - SWS/Chicago | CHDB03::FINKEL | So glad you made it | Tue Feb 07 1989 17:37 | 37 |
| Hello,
Sorry I've not introduced myself before now. I'm a Senior Software
Specialist in Software Delivery in the Chicago District. I'm
34 and was introduced to radical politics while in high school
during the turbulent 60's (which, as we all know, lasted until
1972). :-)
Many of my friends are radical feminists and some are active in the
Gay and Lesbian movement in Chicago. While I feel that radical
feminism has made crucial contributions to the movement to liberate
women, I believe that Marxist feminism has even more to offer, mainly
because the methodology can more easily be applied to understanding
the history of women as well as to advancing that history. Whereas
radical feminists tend to view the oppression of women as deriving
from male domination, Marxist feminists tend to view both as deriving
from the material conditions in which societies develop. To me, it's
just a more powerful method of analysis.
I believe that, like all liberation struggles, the freedom of women
must be WON; it will not be simply HANDED to them. But I also believe
that the success of this liberation struggle depends on the success of
the broader struggle to build socialism. I think that women will not
be fully liberated until the working class as a whole is liberated.
I see the democratic ownership and control of the means of production
to be a necessary condition for the full liberation of all oppressed
people.
The only discussion in this conference that I have joined is that
concerning abortion. My views on this are fairly mature (some will
read 'rigid', some will read 'dogmatic', some will read 'ridiculous').
That's okay...I love a good political discussion. I do try - but sometimes
fail - not to be insulting.

| Hi, Bob Green here, in the Facilities Department at Welwyn Garden
City, in the UK. Found my way here via Euro_Woman; found my way
there via Euro_Forum....
I'm 33, and live in Welwyn Garden City with Doreen, our daughter
Abigail, Paul the lodger, several cats, and some kind of dog.
I've worked for DEC for three years, and have been noting for about
eight months, mainly in Euro_Forum and the music-related conferences,
but decided to add Womannotes and Eurowoman to my notebook in an
effort to understand everybody (there aren't too many female noters
in E_F) - I came in here specifically after a note on sexist language,
in Euro_Woman, directed readers to note 319 (?) in here, and that's
where I'm going now.......
Politically an unashamed but non-aligned socialist.

| Hi. I'm John Skelly.
A friend of mine in this conference asked me to open it and look at a
particular note of interest to her, so I did. I set seen and went
directly to the note in question, then did a next unseen and instantly
found a note I had a urge to reply to.
I gave into the urge and decided I'd better introduce myself.
I work in Software Services Operations in Irvine, California. I
actually used to be a read-only member of this conference for awhile,
but withdrew. I don't know how much I'll participate this time around,
but here I am for the moment, paying attention.

Greetings from the Great Northwest!
I seem to have returned to work. I haven't quite finished my
dissertation, but I promise to get to work on it *real soon*.
As of this evening there are over 12000 notes for me to read to catch
up. Still, I am looking forward to the task. The only thing I truly
missed, except a co-worker or two, was WOMANNOTES.
For those that care: I am a musician (conduct the Rainier Symphony,
etc.), work at DECwest as lead computer operator, live in Seattle with
Lauren, my spouse (no kids), I am 31 years old, height 5'7", weight 145,
Social-Democrat, Quaker, member: ACLU, NOW, NARAL, RCAR and AFM,
ethnicity: Anglo-Saxon/German/Irish, hetero-sexual, born and raised on

are perceptions and capricious court decisions.

Re 3.3: an update...
After a somewhat abrupt vanishing act from the net courtesy of the
INS, I am back... Since September I have come back to the active
military reserve - I am now a full Colonel in the reserve. I have
also had a trip to Thailand courtesy of the British government...
My wife and I are now in the process of putting our possesions where
she wants them, having finally found somewhere to live - a 400 year
old cottage in Oxfordshire, rather prettily located on the banks
of the Thames.
The bad news is that I don't have a home terminal any more, so my
wife won't be a direct contributor any more: however I'll take home
notes I think might interest her, and post her answers...

| Here's my intro from 7.151 from WOMANNOTES-V1
>Name: Aron Insinga
>Site: DLB5 (Donald Lynch Blvd., Marlborough, MA)
>Job: Principal Software Engineer, AI Technology Group
>Interests: Keeping my consciousness raised, since my most important
>relationships are all with women (wife, daughter [age 3], closest friend[s],
>manager[s]... I'm not sure why, it just worked out that way). So I've been
>reading this conference occasionally (I can't keep up with the hyperactivity!)
>and finally decided that I ought to sign in.
It's spring -- time to make a fresh start and admit that I'm about 13,000 notes
behind in V2 and I'll never catch up. So I did a DIR *.*/UNSEEN and saved the
output so that I can go read some of what I've missed, and I did a SET SEEN.
I've spent the past year as project leader for VAX Decision Expert, porting
General Electric's GEN-X from MS-DOS to VMS, grafting the windowing system
onto DECwindows, and making some enhancements. The contractors are gone,
some of the borrowed engineers have been returned, and I'm trying to remember
what else there is in life besides quashing QARs and trying to meet overly
agressive time-to-market goals.
I spent about 8 years in the DECSIM & CADsystems groups in Hudson and before
that I spent about 2 years in Diagnostics in Marlborough & Tewksbury. Before
that I was at the University of Delaware. (I also went to WPI part time for
my first 8 years while at DEC).
Merle's done her 3rd illustration commission for Llewellyn press. Rachel (not
named after anyone in particular) is now 4 years old and we have a son, Jonas
(named after my mother's grandfather), 4 months old.
Interests: Computers, SF, pottery [esp. raku], languages [low-level background
task had been to learn Swedish (to help emigration if Pat Robertson got
elected President :-) but it's been changed to Russian so I can follow the
(other) space program; Rachel likes listening to the tapes too], model rocketry
[although that's in stasis until the kids get old enough & interested], middle-
eastern dancing [also on hold since baby sitters are hard to find], genealogy
[coming off the back burner so I can find out where the Insingas & Klairs
originally came from so I can tell the kids more than my parents told me],
noting [when I'm not being a workaholic], and other stuff that I can't
remember right now.

Name: David Wales
Job Title: Product Repair Centre Tech. III (Soon to be Field Service
Eng. III)
Actual Job: Anything that nobody else wants to do!
Where: Logistics Repair Centre, Lane Cove, Sydney, AUSTRALIA.
Time with DEC: Too long! Actually just on 4 years.
Interests: Computers in general especially communications involving
computers. Notes are great and very entertaining at
times.
Dislikes: The fact that no other people (that I've noticed) from
Australia take part in this file. You guys have all the
parties etc and I get to read about them :-(.
Happy Noting,

Hi,
My name is Gerry Fisher. I'm a technical writer at ZKO (Nashua, New
Hampshire). I'm 27, tall, and thin. I spend a lot of time working on
gay activist issues, and I do a lot of work with a group called DECpac
(a Policy Action Committee comprised of lesbian, gay, and bi folks).
I like basketball, reading, and writing.
I decided to begin reading this file because, although I consider
myself a feminist, I want to keep in touch with what is going on.
Reading this file is one way that I intend on keeping in touch. I'm
looking forward to reading/listening....

| Hi,
I will complete 6 years with Digital in May. I work in UK Product
Marketing. I have responsibility for Office Information Systems
(includes ALL-IN-1). Since now I have worked for 4 managers.
Three (including present) of them were women. Currently in my
group I am the only male member. Most of my contacts in other
functional groups are also women.
This conference helps me to understand needs and wants of women.
As a result I have an excellent rapport with them.
In my spare time I am involved with many activities. The key hobby
is practising Holistic Medicine. I will be delighted to exchange
notes on this subject.

| As I read through this "intro" note, it became apparent that a lot
of people read for a while and then sign in. I guess I'll do the
opposite; I just got into this file and haven't got much to say
about it yet.
I started with DEC here in Northboro, Ma. a little under a year
ago. Before that I was down south in school and basically
growing-up (I'm 26 now but I don't feel very "grown" yet). Over
the years I have spent a good deal of time in circles of friends
who have varied in their feminist outlooks. I myself tend
toward a fairly progressive feminist agenda, I guess, although
I have had some rather heated arguments over such things whether
Mary Daly accomplishes anything good by refusing to allow men to
ask questions at her talks, etc... I will most likely be
read-only in here both because I think it should be a forum for
women (mostly) and also because I just tend to sit back and read
if I even have time for that. If I see a place where I think I
have something useful then I'll throw it in.

| Since I've recently entered a few items in the Gun Protection topic,
and will probably continue to do so, I should tell you more about
myself.
My name is Bill Doll. I've been with DEC for 13+ years, currently am
U.S. Area volume marketing programs manager for Computer Special
Systems (CSS) located in MKO1. Past lives at DEC have included PDP-11
software product management, Telecommunications Industry Group
marketing management, ULTRIX-32 product manager, and CSS Network
Systems Group U.S. product marketing manager.
I'm 47, married, and have two daughters, ages 24 and 25. Since my
wife operates her own antiques and collectibles business in a downtown
area of Manchester, N.H. and both daughters are living independently
on their own, I have a strong interest in their personal safety, and
in women's safety issues in general. I have personally made the
commitment to incorporate firearms into my own personal and home
protection strategies. I am an advocate of the similar use of fire-
arms by women (and men) who have examined their own feelings on this
topic and who have concluded that they are morally comfortable with
the use of justifiable lethal force.
I'm an NRA-certified instructor in Basic Pistol Marksmanship and in
Personal Protection. I'm also professionally-trained in defensive
shooting techniques and tactics and in the moral, ethical, and legal
parameters of the use of deadly weapons and lethal force. I am a
civilian member of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers
(ASLET) and conduct women's safety classes involving instruction in
firearms in conjunction with the Manchester Police Department several
times a year.
I look forward to continued participation and lively interaction in
this conference.

| Hi. I'm Dave Brown, I work in the Mill in the area of standards,
Chief Engineer's Office, Corp. Product Safety, etc. I'm 57, married
for 32 years (very happily!). Our three children are now 31, 24
and 21. We have two grandsons, 9 and 6, who happily live nearby.
I read notes a fair amount (womannotes, soapbox, blacknotes, Digital,
and several conferences dealing with physical disabilities). I seldom
write to notes, but am starting to.
Outside of work, my interests are reading, crosswords, boating,
hammocking in the back yard, and sculpture.
I find I learn a lot from notes, and noting is one good way to avoid
the isolation that this electronic communication environment can
produce (talking to the tube with impersonal business memos all
day is not conducive to generating close working relationships with
fellow workers). Noting brings feelings and new ideas into my day.

3.104 | Bud Luebkert | CECV03::LUEBKERT | | Tue Sep 19 1989 20:26 | 40 |
| Bud Luebkert
Going on 14 years with DEC. I plan implementation of new courses
for customers in the US.
I have been married 18.5 years. It is important to me to state
that this has been to the same woman although all has not been roses
and smooth sailing. We have 5 children: 4 boys and then a girl.
I like to go camping and so do my children until last year when
my oldest found other things. My wife joins us sometimes, but mostly
she enjoys the freedom of our absence.
Like Churchill, I was a Liberal at 21 and was a Conservative by
the time I turned 35. According to Winston, this means I have both
heart and brain. I have not outgrown being extremely idealistic,
which has me continually fighting for causes and possibly tilting
at windmills.
I believe that listening is a nearly extinct skill, and that this
is the reason for most strife in the world today. Lack of listening
or empathy, shouting and name calling, and attacks and put downs
bother and sometimes anger me. (See, I slipped into one of my
windmill CAUSES again.)
Comment: Idealism hurts a lot, so I'd like to grow out of it, settle
down, and enjoy life.
Why am I here? Because I hate sexism, racism, or any other
-ism that results in decisions which disadvantage or benefit
any person based on these unless it can be shown that sex, race,
or whatever is a legitimate factor (eg employment criterion). I
believe very firmly in equal pay for equal work, although this is
sometimes hard to determine <eg between different jobs=subjective>.
I believe in Right to Life vs Pro Choice, although I contend that
there was an earlier choice in most cases and I support the freedom
to make that choice or an adoption choice later. And where else
but here could I expect to find all these issues discussed hopefully
between individuals who respect one another even if they hold different
views?

I'm here for purely selfish reasons: most of my friends have been women

outnumber men.
I'm aware of some of the paradoxes involved in being this sort of
"feminist man" (lesbian acquaintances at Bryn Mawr pointed out a number
of them to me, artists such as Yvonne Rainier in "The Man Who Envied
Women" have pointed out more) but have found no way to completely
resolve them. I hope to be fairly quiet while working out what it
means in terms of noting.

read everything in here before posting, but I'll try to make a
qualitative effort.
I am not a feminist, but I am a humanist, which is in the right
direction. I find people to be fascinating, in general, which is one
reason I read notesfiles like HR. I have trouble understanding men
most of the time; with women its pure SWAG.
I don't have any great expectations of discovering profound meaning
here, but with luck I'll leave with more than I came in with. On a
good day, I might even give something useful in return.
Nice to meet you! Come see me anytime!
Jim

| Hello =wn=,
After more than a year of occasional read-only visits it's about
time I signed in. I'm Ad Vissers and I work for the Central Response
Group in Utrecht, Holland. The female viewpoint interests me both
in a political sense (put me *definitely* left of centre on the
scale) and in the sense of relations on my personal level.
And most certainly I can say a couple of note strings here have
answered questions for me in the past. I'd classify myself as a
feminist for as much as a male can qualify for that title and that
latter part already indicates I'm still lacking some input on how that
could be filled in. On the personal level I must say when it comes
to close friends women are in the majority and even though they
have helped me understand many things there is always more to learn
every day.
You can find me around the net in files like Friends, World_Issues,
H_R (as of late), EF90 (comod) and Euro-woman. I think I'll read
a lot more than I'll write but I might toss in a note from time
to time.

| I was reminded by the discussion of conference membership that I have
never registered.
I'm at the Mill in a small group in CRA called Technology Assessment
and Planning that worries about future technologies that might be
important to the company, and what we should do about them. Earlier I
was a software engineer, starting in 1981. I'm actually an imposter,
since I've never even taken a computer science or engineering course;
I'm really a historian of computing in disguise, whose time-axis got
reversed. But please don't tell anyone.
I've seen many changes in possibilities and expectations for women,
both in my own life and in our larger society, under the rubric of
wo/man's liberation. I think I've welcomed them all. I trust they
will continue, for all our sakes.

I'm Bob Buckland, a program manager in the Ottawa office. That
means that I get to deliver our solutions to customer problems.
I've been with Digital since '77 on and off, both in Canada and
the UK.
Usually note in read only mode unless to ask advice, ask a question,
or can enter factual data. I tend to stay away from entering opinions
unless I'm very sure about what I'm saying. Besides someone usually
says what I feel before I do, and so much better.

| Hello =wn= World - former 'lurker' Dan Kalikow here. I *had* been
planning finally to introduce myself over this weekend, but hadn't
expected the attending turmoil. O well, no matter. Hi!
I've been at DEC only since last May. Notes in general, and =wn= in
particular, have been VERY helpful in my acculturation process, as well
as fascinating, sometimes amusing/infuriating, and 'most always
enlightening. Thanks, all, for sharing -- now that I'm "in," I hope to
contribute occasionally.
I live in Natick Mass. with my dear wife of 25+ years, and I work in
PCSG (Personal Computer Systems Group) Littleton, LJO2, as a member of
the "VMS Services for Macintosh" engineering development team.
**BRAG ON** :-) -- with apologies in advance for the length, NEXT REPLY
recommended for the uninterested... Much of what follows was lifted
from that blurb you (may) have to write for your college's 25th
reunion. As we begin our story, Dan has just turned 47 and is sitting
at his Mac II...
Debby and I met on my 19th birthday (at a Brandeis mixer! :-) and have
been together since. She later earned a Master's in Clinical Psych
from URI. For the past 17 years, she's run a very successful
custom-decorated cake business that gives rein to the artistic flair
she didn't know she had until she first wielded a decorating tube. By
now, she's modeled virtually every known solid object, and not a few
abstractions, in cake! She also works part-time at International Data
Corp.
Debby & I are almost(?) through raising two wonderful kids, 21 and 18.
They are now a Senior (linguistics/French major) and a Freshling at
Harvard, my undergraduate alma mater. As the joke sez, "With two kids
in college, we're getting poorer by degrees!" But there's NOTHING we'd
rather spend it on than our kids' educations.
Our two daughters have been our chief joys. These are two witty and
delightful people it's been our pleasure and privilege to bring up and
to know. Not surprisingly, I've found that to raise daughters has
strengthened my feminism.
Debby & I have just come through a rocky winter -- she had two sinus
operations for a tumor that really had us scared, plus a splitting,
9-week nonstop, recuperation headache. But thanks to the fine
Boston-area medical community, she's made a full recovery! Whooppee!
Where I'm coming from: I'm a Mass. native, liberal Democrat,
pro-choice, "unintentionally pc" :-):-). Both my undergraduate and
graduate degrees were in Experimental Psychology, and after leaving
Brown I actually professed (at U. of NC) for a couple of years in that
field before deciding I wanted to do full-time research (and to get a
better excuse to play with computers full-time!).
I spent the '70s and then some at Bolt Beranek & Newman, the Cambridge
think-tank, doing a whole range of applied engineering consulting work,
from psychophysics and psycholinguistics to office automation (as it
was beginning to be called in those days) and general human factors.
One interesting line of work developed out of our digital signal
processing work -- I coordinated all, and led some, of BBN's lab work
on the (in)famous "eighteen and a half minute gap" tape that played a
central role in the Watergate scandal of '72-'74. I wrote a successful
clinical diagnostic test still used in audiometry. I also got into
TENEX and TOPS-20, PDP-8's and -11's, electronic mail, text-editors and
-formatters, laser printers and the rest.
One of my major satisfactions then, as now, was putting new
productivity tools in users' hands. In that connection, I also recall
with pride the several women secretaries who were early adopters of
those tools, whom I "mentored" through the transition to the
development staff.
After a short and disastrous stint at DG (I made the strategic error of
joining an innovative OA group that was incompatible with the rest of
the product line, and left before the photon torpedoes hit), I spent
the rest of the '80s at Prime until the layoff ax fell.
Aside from working on EMACS, a declarative text-formatting language,
and PostScript laser printers, my chief claim to fame at Prime was as
the senior resident "Mac freak." In the late '80s, I passionately
advocated and *nearly* pulled off :-( the kind of strategic alliance
between Prime and Apple that DEC enjoys today (well OK, in retrospect,
turn that :-( into a :-) 'cause Digital Has It Now).
I remain a Mac freak to this day. I *better,* we own three -- our
upgrade strategy is to buy one, send it off to college with a kid, and
buy the next at undergraduate discount rates. Yikes, no more kids...
Here at DEC, I've got the best of both worlds -- a Mac II on my desk
and plenty of VAXen to tap into via DECnet and LAT, among other
transports. I've also got very bright, incredibly dedicated colleagues
and an exciting product to help get out the door.
Some favorite things: Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Tom Clancy, James
Clavell, Stephen King, Desperado, time-lapse photography, international
food (Indian and French are faves), and romantic (25th-anniversary, in
our case) trips to France. I particularly recommend hot-air ballooning
over the Loire, bed & breakfasting in actual Michelin-listed chateaux,
and that evening cruise down the Seine where you dress up and they feed
you a 5-star meal as Paris glides by at sunset... Ahh... And don't
forget to buy a rose for your SO...
(BTW, FWIW, I like it when Noters mention their geographical locations
-- the EasyNet is so time/place transparent, I sometimes wonder whence
on the planet the musings appear. But then again I wanted to be a
cartographer when I was a kid; perhaps this curiosity is out-of-place.)
Back to the college reunion blurb... There's much that one leaves out
in a summary of this sort -- goals not met, mistakes made, paths not
traveled. As ever, the rules change as you go along, and only the most
enduring yardsticks are reliable. My wife and I are together, healthy,
and happy; our children are bright, beautiful and full of promise; we
tend our figurative garden. The seasons change. Love endures.
Thanks for listening, see you online... Dan

| I'm Joseph Schlam, (I always use Joseph when writing my name,
Joe in conversation) a principal software engineer in the Transaction
Processing System Performance group in Littleton, MA. Currently
working with the DECq (a piece of DECtp V1) development team.
I have been with Digital two years. I moved to Digital after
working part time for 15 months in order to be home with my son
Mark, now 3 1/2 years old. Spent the previous 10 years working
with a major competitor's (hint - 3 letters, first one is a vowel)
software as a system programmer, APL wizard, sw developer, and
numerous customer support hats.
I am a parent of two truly wonderful children :-), Alexandra, almost 7,
and Mark. Married almost 10 years to an ex-DECcie, who has been
traveling 50% of the time for 10 months. Live in Lexington.
I note primarily in read mode, but now that I have introduced myself
look forward to contributing to the lively and for the most part
enlightening discussions.
Interests outside of work, after parenting, include
running, reading (never enough time for this) current novels, some
history, and short stories, cooking, and music - jazz, R&b, real rock.

Hi,
My name is Brian Nelson and I work in the NUO facility here in
Nashua, New Hampshire. The long form of this intro can be found in the
WHOAREYOU conference, entry #716, but the short form goes something
like:
I'm 27.5, single, and I've been with DEC for nearly 5 years now.
I've been a software engineer for all of that time. I'm into all kinds
of things (and am always looking to expand the list -- I *love* trying
new stuff) that range the entire spectrum of activities and things I
like to do. However, I don't like Mexican food; hey, no one's
*perfect*.... ;-) (I like everything else I've tried so far, but
Italian has to be my favorite.)
One of my favorite things is talking to people and getting to know
folks. That's one of the reasons I'm here -- I'm a definite people
watcher, and I mean that much more deeply than simply using my eyes. I
like to understand them as much as I can. Since women make up a good
percentage of our world -- *and* since they seem to be traditionally
more difficult for me to understand (sometimes I think it's a
conspiracy ;-) ) -- any insight I can gain from this conference would
be great. If not, at least getting a clearer picture of how some women
view certain issues would be a good start. I look forward to and
welcome any and all discussions, both in here and off-line.
I hope to pop up here and there when notes of particular interest
to me come along (time permitting in my now-hectic job).
Brian

| I'm Don Mac Millan. I'm a husband and father of three great children;
two of whom are young women. These is also a grandmotherly person living with
us.
I was raised by a single mother (most of the time) and now live in
a household where women are the majority (as indicated). It somehow seems wise
for me to be sensitive to 'womens issues'. I consider myself orientated more
toward humanism then feminism though; appreciating all the while the large
area of overlap.
Lastly, by way of intro, I'm an ISWS specialist currently assigned to
Corporate Internal Audit in Acton ma.
