1609.0. "Saito 150S25CC opinions" by UNYEM::BLUMJ () Thu Jun 23 1994 09:56

    Does anyone know anything about the Saito FA-150S25CC four stroke
    engine?

    I have an opportunity to buy one at a very low price.

    Thanks,

    Jim

    I do not know the engine but have heard good comments about its smooth
    running and idle. It is too big for current pattern regulations so I
    have not seen it on the circuit.

    I just picked up the Saito 150 and the O.S. 160. These things are
    quite impressive!

    So many planes, so little time!

    I know am officially involved in gliders, electrics, and glow.
1609.3Saito break in UNYEM::BLUMJFri Jul 01 1994 09:367
    My friend John who purchased the Saito 150 ran it on the bench
    this week to break it in.

    It actually was moving a weighted sawhorse around his driveway!

    Fuel consumption during rich break in runs - 4 oz. per minute,
    GULP(pun intended)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1609.4Saito 150 in actionUNYEM::BLUMJMon Jul 18 1994 09:4312
    Well this weekend I got to see the Saito 150 in action on a Senior
    Telemaster. This plane will be doing aerotowing in the future, so
    I was anxious to see how it would perform. The engine came with a
    15x11 APC prop which really isn't the best prop for this plane/motor
    combination. Anyway the engine is very well behaved - starts
    easily, idles very well(important with 15x11 prop), and has lots of
    power. It will climb out of site at nearly a vertical angle.
    Unfortunately the stab flutters at full throttle. Now that the
    preliminary tests are done, john will be adding the releasable towhook,
    so hopefully aerotowing at my field will resume.

    A very powerful, well behaved engine, indeed!
1609.5Less PitchLEDS::WATTMon Jul 18 1994 11:5911
    Jim,
    	You do not want that kind of pitch on a Telemaster. The speed will
    be too great - flutter will result. I would think that for towing, you
    would want something like a 16-8 prop assuming you have ground
    clearance for it. I was running a 16-8 on my OS120 4-stroke so the
    Saito would certainly handle it. With these planes, you have to be
    careful to keep the speed down. Flutter can cause very dramatic
    failures very quickly.

    re: -1

    That is the prop we are going to use(16-8). It was interesting to
    see how much more difficult the Telemaster was to land with the
    15-11 prop. Even at a relatively low throttle setting that prop
    generates a lot of thrust!

    JIm,
    	The high pitch props really do generate lots of thrust at idle.
    You might want to consider flaps for extra drag. Most 4-strokes don't
    idle much below 2600 rpm reliably. Larger diameter props idle better.

1609.8Light Wing LoadingLEDS::WATTMon Jul 18 1994 13:254
    I forgot to add that these planes will fly with very little thrust due
    to the very light wing loading.
