To initiate this notes I'd like to talk about my club. The Pioneer
Valley Radio Control Club. We're based in the Greater Springfield
Massachusetts area. This seems to include about a 20 mile radious
of Springfield. There are three other clubs within 15-30 minutes
of Springfield. OK
So, my club has been without a flying site for the most part of 16
months. About 4 months ago we tried flying at a small active airport
but that didn't seem to work out. Then we came upon a turf farm that
was willing to have us use their turf for a fee. Now two new events
have entered the picture. A second turf farm about 4 miles further
is also allowing us to use their turf during the winter free of charge.
This is a test to see if it's possible for us to possibly move from
our present turf farm to this newer one. The main reason being Access.
The newer turf farm has gravel roads right to the turf. The present
farm is somewhat muddy. To add to this the owners of our old home
tried to get wet lands waivers for the property so that they could
build a warehouse and the community turned them down. They threatened
to pull out of the town and the state stepped in and agreed to swap
land they had that abutted the factory on a different side for the
land we were previously using. Since then we have been in contact with
the state and we are one final OK from getting access to this our old
field. My club has also adopted the ideal that if we can afford (and
we can) two fields then we should get and keep two fields. This will
hopefully keep us from never getting into the situation of not having a
place to fly.
OK so that what's up at my club. WHat's happening at other clubs
around the world?

1396.2 | our rusty club's activities | KBOMFG::KNOERLE | | Thu Dec 19 1991 09:39 | 43 |

Our club's name is Marktoberdorfer Modellbauverein. We belong to
the Marktoberdorfer Segelflugverein, what is a full size glider club.
The advantage is that the full size glider club got more honored people
than we have, I mean more people known in the public. I don't know why,
the real glider are taken more serious in the public.
We are a total of 200 whatever guys in both clubs, maybe 80 in our model
airplane's department. Quite a number if you need anything from the
government (permisions for official events etc.)
From what I'm used from PPSS (CXO) or the HTA-gang (SHR) our club
activities are somewhat small. We have a meeting every 2 month in a
nice Gasthaus, with little or no agenda (besides drinking some good
brewed stuff). This year I could convince our dry bones to hold a fun
flight contest, what was a real showstopper. (I took 4th place and
still won a Micro-biplane ) We also hosted the Multiplex Super Glider
Cup Finals - whow ! The next day we had an official "Flugtag" with
approx 200 visitors watching an awsome_2-1/2_hours_nonstop_program
provided by our clubs members. EVERYTHING was flown, from handlaunch
gliders to winchstart a 7 meter ASW17, from oldtimers to choppers,
beginners to an ex-German champion, from electric to gas-engine, single
flights to dogfights -- the people and I were impressed.
Our field is in a perfect place, just green gras everywhere in a circle
of at least 3 kilometers, the alps in the background. The landing area
is short mowed gras with a 15 foot fence to the pits, so is the parking
lot. There is a table and two benches to sit and chat outside. We got a
big hanger where we can sit inside this year.
What I'm trying to force is the kind of activities that the PPSS is
practicing. But those who know Germans know, that this must be
impossible (as my first experience told me). All I tried to do is a
funflight for club members at one weekend. What came out was a big
spectacle 3 months planned ahead with a whole bunch of prizes, a big
grill party with drinks and cakes afterwards, with visitors and so on
and so on. F R U S T R A T I N G ! It was fun though, but I'd prefer
more smaller events than just one big and perfect one. The thermal
contest I wanted to hold was not doable, 4 weeks notation time isn't
enough for such a club. Oh well, I'll try again next year....

1396.3 | Flying in Georgia | TRNING::FRANCO | Spin, crash and burn! | Wed Jan 22 1992 13:44 | 44 |

I guess I'll go next.
The club which I am a current member is called the Douglasville
RC Modellers. (We are currently running a contest to come up with
a new name and club insignia.) It is located in Douglasville, Georgia
and has 45+ paid members. (I say paid because we pay $50.00 a year
dues.)
Our field is "owned" by the county but they have reassured us we
can stay there for at least the next 5 years. I really can't blame
them, it use to be (or should I say, it is) an old landfill. The
runway is 600+ feet long by 100+ feet wide and all grass. The county
is going to put in a 300X50 paved runway in this spring at no cost
to us. (They like us.) Our only drawback is that at the far end
of the runway, and out of site from the flyers, are some homes.
The county has asked that we not fly over the houses as it disturbes
the occupants.
We have two 40X25 foot "sheds" built for cover which get plenty
of use during the summer months. (Average temp. is 86-92 degrees
from April thru September.) Each shed has large tables, old metal
doors, that we use for assembling and repairing planes. Separating
the sheds from the runway is a large plastic fence with opennings
every 20 feet used for access to the runway. On the back side of
the sheds we have installed two strands of yellow nylon rope with
red banners, it separtes the non-flyers from the "pits" and the
flyers.
We have club meetings once a month, usually the first Tuesday, and
we have an agenda set-up. It consists of old business, new business
action items, a financial report and then general open discussion.
Most meetings last 1 1/2 starting at 7:30 and ending at 9:00.
Latest business, beside looking into a new name and some type of
insignia, is looking into getting some jackets or shirts with our
insignia on them. Something like the IMAA offers in their cat.
Well, there it is. If any of you flyers from other parts of the
country or globe are ever in Georgia look us up and come on out.
We fly all year round with Saturdays and Sundays being the best
days.

1396.5 | Pikes Peak RC Club | DIENTE::OSWALD | TANSTAAFL! | Tue Feb 04 1992 15:13 | 76 |
| I s'pose this is as good a place as any for this.
The Pikes Peak RC Club has recently completed (well almost, still some finish
work to do) a new club airfield. Facilities include 2 runways, one 600' long,
the other 450'. Both are 35 or 40' wide, I can never remember which. Both
runways, taxiways and 7200 square feet of pit area are paved and smoooooth.
We're putting the finishing touches on an 864 square foot picnic shelter.
We sit on 40 acres of nothing, the nearest structure is over a mile away.
There is 1 tree in sight. .25 miles away. There is parking enough for hundreds
of cars.
We will be hosting an open house Sunday May 17. There will be demo's and open
flying. If there is interest I'll post an agenda when I get it done (I'm the cd).
Any valid AMA member is welcome. In June we will be hosting the regional
Master's qualifier.
If you'll be in the area please plan on stopping by. We're real proud of our
new facility and want to show it off! A sort of picture of the site follows:

The runways are about 80 degrees to one another which allows us to fly in most
all wind conditions except due west. Westerly winds mean severe storms so we
don't fly in them anyway. There are pits paralleling both runways, each linked
to the runway by three taxiways. The east and west pits are linked by a single
cross taxiway. There is a 4' fence that parallels the pits and the cross taxiways
to keep spectators out of the flying area. We will be installing a set of
bleachers paralleling each runway, behind the fence. The picnic shelter is
covered and has a 10'x12' walled enclosure in the center which can be used as
a concession stand and/or transmitter impound for contests. The three +'s in
front of the shelter are flagpoles and we fly a US, Colorado, and club flag. The
area is fenced to keep out cows (we're surrounded by grazing land). You enter
on the south. The area between the runways and the south fence is about
20 acres and is all available for parking. The distance between the southermost
end of the runways and the south fence is actually a quarter mile.
Hope to see some of you there someday. I'll be in touch with Al (the Rat) and try
and cajole he and some of his buddies up here for the qualifier.

Congradulations on the new site. I was in CXO for a few months back in
85. I figure by your description the housing projects got to close and
you ended up moving. Your new location would put you out past the
small municiple airport, right? Good luck with this new adventure.

PS
On my home front things are still in a state of flux. We haven't heard
from the warden (Yes, another attempted break out last week) so we are
still on hold for our old Lego site. The Fair grounds site fell
through in that they don't mind if people use the area but are
concerned of liabilities if they sanction our club use. WHatever,
they won't even talk about it.... We've begun working on another
area just over the river from Springfild. If we get it it won't be an
ideal site for about five years but after that it could turn into a
a number 1 class site. The field will sit on a capped off land fill.
The area is about 3/4 x 1/2 miles in area. The only problem is that a
second cell of the landfill is still in use. Some times during the
summer this will pose a problem for the noses. But then in a few
years when it to is capped off the issue will be dead.
Working to secure this area I talked to the director of city
construction and he asked me to talk to his lead engineer. Come to
find out the engineer is a second year RC pilot so this has lead to
an inside effort to secure the area. He's also agree to do all of the
engineering drawings necessary to secure the area. We'll see. I
have a meeting with him at the site on friday at 3:30.
