1333.1 | Cut off disk great for cutting nylon/plastic and music wire | HPSRAD::AJAI | | Tue Jun 25 1991 13:27 | 19 |
| Let me initiate this topic, by writing ya'll about a "discovery" this
weekend...
I find the red, thin cutting disc (garnet?) is simply great when it
comes to cutting nylon/plastic.
I used it to cut off extra unwanted arms of a servo wheel/horn in a
jiffy. I also used it to cut nylon wing mounting bolts to size, and to
taper the cut end.
I am not sure if it 'cuts' by grinding the nylon/plastic, or by melting
it with heat generated by friction! You get a real clean cut, the disc
doesn't jam, and the burr simply crumbles to finger pressure!
Of course, it is also great to cut music wire, and defangs the end when
you grind it flat, and bevel, so it doesn't feel like you have barbed
wire inside your fuselage, as you work on your servo installation.

1333.2 | I used to cut music wire with a hack saw..snicker. | ELMAGO::TTOMBAUGH | A Fistful of Epoxy | Tue Jun 25 1991 17:21 | 16 |
| You've covered several of the most labor saving ones. Also:
Cutting hatches out of fiberglass fuselages, with the cut-off wheel.
Drilling holes for servo mount screws.
Drilling countersunk holes for screw heads that are to be flush
with the surface. The oval shaped bit with the helical cut teeth
is good for this..up to ~ #6 screws.
Grinding off old glue/paint with the little circular sanding belt.
When equipped with a carbide bit, useful for sharpening the carbide
tips on roller ski poles. Whoops! Wrong hobby!

1333.3 | Makes spinner end of cowl fast and accurate | HPSRAD::AJAI | | Thu Jul 11 1991 18:14 | 12 |
| More discoveries with ze dremel tool, as posted in my WOT4 note...
1. Use it to make perfect discs of wood, buy bolting rough cut version
to mandrel, and running it against sandpaper on table.
Get a beveled edge by holding tool at angle to sandpaper, instead of
parallel.
2. Sand out inside to debur and make ring after rough cutting a smaller
disc out of a bigger disc, using the cylinderical sanding accessory.

1333.4 | other ways to cut circles | POBOX::KAPLOW | Set the WAYBACK machine for 1982 | Thu Jul 11 1991 20:08 | 13 |
| I've got a circle cutting jig I use with my lathe, but it could be
used on any power sander to cut perfect circles. It's simply a
thin plywood plate that I bolt down near the sanding disk, with a
thumb tack sticking up thru the wood. I rough cut the wood to be
close to a circle, stick the center onto the tack, and rotate.
Instant circle. With it mounted to my lathe bed, I can crank it
closer to the sanding disk as necessary to get the right size
circle; I'm sure you could adapt this to whatever other power
sander you might have.
There aer also circle cutting drill bits available for those who
want to spend a few bucks. They will cut circles, rings, and
whatever.

1333.5 | Dremel tool brush preventive maintenance | HPSRAD::AJAI | | Wed Jul 17 1991 16:12 | 7 |
| The instructions for my 395 tool recommends periodic inspection of the
brushes, and replacement if warranted (under 1/8" length). I tried
getting the brushes out, but failed.
Anyone else out there have luck following instructions?

1333.7 | You'll probably have to have someone order them for you | ZENDIA::REITH | Jim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02 | Tue Sep 10 1991 15:16 | 4 |
| Most dealers should be able to order parts for you. I'm sure brushes
will be a special order. Most hobby shops carry Dremel and should be
able to order them. My local Ace hardware store even carries the stuff
(I've gotten accessories there on saturday 8^)

1333.8 | If you have an antique Dremel... | CLOSUS::TAVARES | Stay low, keep moving | Tue Sep 10 1991 18:40 | 2 |
| I had to replace brushes on a very old Dremel once, I found them
in a motor repair shop.

1333.9 | Dremel is in Racine Wisc. | POBOX::KAPLOW | Set the WAYBACK machine for 1982 | Tue Sep 10 1991 19:27 | 4 |
| I ordered a set from SIG once. I don't know if the 280 is a
"current" model. Ever since Dremel was bought-out by Emerson, they
don't seem to stock parts once they discontinue the model. I used
to be able to get 15 year old parts from the "real" Dremel :-)

1333.10 | Cross-posting info | ZENDIA::REITH | Jim Reith DTN 226-6102 - LTN2-1/F02 | Thu Oct 24 1991 09:23 | 5 |
| In note 92.47 in notesfile NOTED::Woodworking_and_Tools it was noted
that a tooless/keyless chuck is now available on the Dremel. In my
experience with other tools that have this, it makes bit changing easy.
This might be a feature to look for if you're reading this topic before
buying a Dremel

Since a note was posted by Jim in kinda of a Dremel state of mind
I've got a question. I'm interested in the 3950 vari-speed Dremel
set. What retailers/mailorder houses offer the best deals on
Dremel products ??
