| | Phil,

The Dremel [moto] tool is certainly helpful though not necessarily
essential to model building. The corded, variable-speed model is the
one I'd recommend for your first one.

A caveat, however: the Dremel tool is a handy but an unforgiving little
beast. It can get away from you and ruin what'cher working on in a
heartbeat...it may even take a bite out of YOU if yer' not careful.
Practice, practice, practice on various scrap materials before
commiting it to yer' pride 'n joy! I have 3 models of the tool and
find it [now] indispensible but you MUST use it cautiously, especially
when you first start using it.

| | I agree with Al Casey. I've gone through several over the years; my
first was in 1948 (It was called a CASCO then.) I now have the tiny
battery version, the variable A/C version, and I'm close to buying the
larger DC version. I also use a router adapter.
The tiny one is wimpy, needlessly so, but very handy. It is also slow
enough to please me. The A/C version as it comes cannot be slowed enough
to do certain jobs well; although it is variable, for some jobs it varies
from too fast to much too fast.
You will find that the thin cut-off wheels, although dangerous, are a
blessing. Nothing else cuts hard steel as well. Wear safety glasses.

    Hi Phil,

Personnally I use my DREMEL tool only for big work and let the fine
detail for hand made principally because of the unforgivness of the
tool. Instead of buying the whole tool, I went to the hardware store
and got the flexibly shaft attachment and rig it to one of my wife
old variable speed mixers. It is noisiyer then the real thing but it
cost me only $15.00, and works fine.

    Regards,

               Jacques

| | Like most modelers I have had and used a Dremel Moto Tool for years
and swear by it for some things (like cutting the end off music wire).
But for Christmas I received one of those new portable mini Dremels.
$29.00 from Sears - same price as Tower Hobbies.
After just a few weeks I got to tell you this thing is worth it's
weight in gold. I can't say how dependable and reliable it will
be because I haven't had it long enough but talk about handy.
I don't know how I ever got along without it.
Bye --+--
