313.0. "Lime Rock Park has been repaved!" by ASDG::ZETTERLUND () Fri Oct 30 1992 13:56

The information from a person who completed the Barber 3-day FF school this
week is that Lime Rock Park was completely resurfaced last week. It's now
smooth, flat, and without reference marks. The corners remain the same
(Diving Turn has not been tightened up. Barber hasn't put in his turn-in,
apex, and track-out marks yet. There is a substantial drop to the shoulder
    all around the track now.

The way I had heard it at the NARRC runoffs a month ago, was that only
the downhill to Big Bend was to be repaved (i.e. the main straight).
Skippy must have gotten more of our extra registration fee $$ to
enable him to do the entire track. With New England winters being the
way they are, if he didn't dig up what was there and put in a good
gravel base, he'll have to do it all over again in the not too distant
future. He should have taken a lesson from the Bahre's at NHIS and
did it right the first time.

    Just my $.02 worth

does that mean the pit entrance is where it use to be, or does it now
start from just after the bridge at 10 and go through the bottom
    paddock area?

313.3New LRP is definitely fasterASDG::ZETTERLUNDThu Nov 05 1992 16:098
Information from a friend who ran the PCA event there last Thursday
indicates that the pit entrance has not been changed. There are some
big drops on the shoulders, both inside and outside. My friend was
experimenting with the line but was able to turn a 1:00.05 lap, 0.7 sec
faster than his previous best. He feels that the track will end up being
about 2 sec/minute faster (for stiffly sprung cars) than before.

313.4First impressionsASDG::ZETTERLUNDMon Nov 09 1992 10:0613
I had my first chance to drive the repaved track on Saturday. The
bumps have been subdued and the washboard in the Left hander is gone.
The compression in Diving Turn is much gentler but my g-analyst showed
that the same bumps are still there. On a very cold day (35F and
cloudy) the track was faster in the Left hander and Diving Turn but no
faster anywhere else. I think that 1-2 sec/min is still a reasonable
estimate of the reduction in lap times that can be expected by
mid-season next year. The shoulders had been built up, but not
compacted, at the track outs. Drop offs at other places were as much as
six inches. Since this was mostly a surface coat paving, it will be
interesting to see if the bumps come back over the winter.

>Headers and extraneous other things deleted<

But the best rocker/racer story I know is one from my own flagging
experience. It was about 1986, and Meatloaf (remember him, of Bat Out
Of Hell fame?) was driving in one of the early celebrity series
dedicated to the rock-and-roll crowd, the Dodge International Star
Challenge. This was the Memorial Day IMSA weekend at Lime Rock. Bunch
of superstar-types, driving identical front-wheel-drive Dodge
Somethingorothers. You know the drill.

Anyway, Meatloaf drove a pretty decent race, and finished something on
the order of third, and even had a few straight bodypanels left on the
car at the end. Not too shabby. So the corner captain, a well known
SCCA New England Region personality and bearer of the well-deserved
reputation of being the single crudest human being ever to walk the
face of the earth, decided that it was desirable- indeed,
*imperative*- that the entire crew of Turn 5 display our appreciation
of his driving skills on the cooloff lap. And so we did. In front of
Gawd hisself, the ESPN TV crew, and the entire national audience, the
entire crew of Turn 5 _mooned_ Meatloaf en masse as he came through on
the cooloff lap.

More's the pity, they showed the race tape-delayed, and our tribute
was consigned to the cutting-room floor.

But there was a happy ending, after all. At the end-of-the-day worker
beer and bench racing get-together, we were all having a good laugh,
and none other than Meatloaf wandered up. Turns out that he thought
that that was just about the funniest thing he'd ever witnessed, and
he decided on the spot that anybody who was crazy enough to do _that_
on national TV had to be the kind of folks that he wanted to hang
around and drink beer with. So while all the other celebs were limoing
off to the airports and doing power nouvelle cuisine dinners with
their agents, Meatloaf (he gets _really_ pissed if you call him Mr.
Loaf!) was hanging out at worker beer, getting properly sloshed with a
bunch of smelly, sweaty, sunburned corner workers. He joined New
England Region SCCA on the spot, and came out and played with us
several times after that. I've kind of lost track of many of the folks
out there since moving to the Left Coast, but that event has a very
fine place in my memory!

Ok, so name names....

Russ Horton was the corner captain, and the only reason he even did it was
because he was dared to by Y.T. As far as Russ being "the single crudest
human being ever to walk the face of the earth", with that I take serious
objection. For three years running, he could only manage to place third
in the "most disgusting flagger contest" held every year during the
Mohawk-Hudson Regions race weekend. The "Disgusting Flag" (and it was
truly disgusting) was swapped back and forth between Y.T. and C.Hinchcliff
a number of times until "retired" in the posession of C.H, esq.

Mailed to Scott, too....

be of interest.

Greg Clark, one of the leading contenders for Penrose
Rookie Challengehonors on the NASCAR Busch North
Grand National circuit, will be the guest speaker
at tomorrow nights, Wed. Oct 6, meeting of the
Mohawk-Hudson Region Sports Car Club of America.
The meeting will be at the Holiday Inn Turf on
Wolf Road at 7:30 p.m.; there's no charge for admission.

Clark is supposed to be testing today at Lime Rock

anticipation of the Busch North debut at the
Connecticut sports car course on Saturday October 16,
so it should be an informative presentation.

Never having been to Lime Rock before, could someone give
directions, I know its in Lakeville CT, but that all I know.
I'd be coming from the Worcester area. What can we expect in
the way of parking or traffic. I know this is the first time
the BGNN boys have been there so would think there will be a
     pretty good crowd.

Also, where is the best place to sit, how much of the track
can you see from any one place, can/should we bring chairs and sit
on the grass? Or any other information that would be helpful.

    Dennis,

Get there early!!! We have BGN- north, USAC and SCCA folks going so the
    crowds will be big.

Take the Mass Pike to exit 2, then follow signs for Rt7 south. You will
stay on rt7 into Connecticut. Follow 7 until you see signs for Rt112.
The track is on Rt112 about a mile to two after you get on RT112.

Note: As you get off the pike, you'll be on Rt102 for a short time in
Stockbridge. Just follow signs for Great Barrington, etc.

I'm headed down that Thursday night. I have the SCCA radios and can't
    be late......

I'll be in the pits all weekend, seeing how I'm pit marshall for SCCA

For those who want a GOOD place to watch the action.... you can join

days - which means you can work NHIS next Sunday at our Racing Against

You can work the pits with me, grid or go flag on a station. If you are
interested in doing this, send me mail.

313.19my weekend at LRPPROXY::J_EVANSMon Oct 18 1993 16:1431
It was a fun and strange weekend at Lime Rock. USAC and NASCAR really
are different than SCCA. NASCAR allows smoking in the pits, sitting on
the wall, you name it. Glad Nascar didn't want SCCA workers in the
pits... We did pits for USAC, but their stewards get to sit on the
wall when the cars are out.

Got Richard Petty's signature on my racing jacket. He was at Grid when
I was heading down to help at station 12. I was standing next to Johnny
    Rutherford as well.

King Richard was in the back of a convertible that was suppose to be at
the back of the pack for the first pace lap and somehow his driver
pulled into the middle of the pack!!! Glad nobody bumped his car going
    around the track....

WHile at 12, got to help push a BGN car out of the grass. Suckers are
heavy, and noisy. They were running near 120 db.

For you SCCA types, we did have an emergency in pit lane. Trish Blethen
was wearing her bi-focals and mis-judged the small armco. She tripped
and fell hard while the cars were coming in the pits after practice. I
had to jump in front of her so she didn't get run over. Couldn't move
her given her condition..... she took a ride to the hospital and was
back at the end to see Ray drive. Her crew busted her buns by "tripping
in unison" over the armco and rolling in pit lane. It hurt when she
laughed. I was using a broom handle as a white cane. If you see her
this weekend at NHIS, tell her it's tough to get old..... we all
    did... :-)

Should have left her there!! (only kidding, it would have done more
damage to any oncoming car). Does her stunt qualify her for one of the
NERD awards this year? If so, she should win handily.

Any news on the F2000 race, like who won? What was the big shunt?
Looking especially to see how David Porter did. He used to drive CF
(bought our old Hawke, then traded it for the Zink he drove and sold

North America. The Dodge Dealers Grand Prix at Lime Rock on Memorial
Day weekend, May 26-29 1995, will feature seven of the world's fastest
sports car racing series for a purse of over $500,000.

For the first time in US road racing history SCCA Pro Racing and the
International Motor Sports Association will featuretheir pro racing
efforts in a co-sanctioned event that will showcase over two hundred of
the world's fastest sports cars competing in a total of eight hours of
racing.

Headlining the weekend will be the SCCA's TransAm Tour and the IMSA
Exxon World Sports Car series. The weekend will include six television
programs both live and tape delayed on ESPN and Prime Networks.

The tentative weekend schedule includes: SCCA TransAm Tour, IMSA Exxon
World Sports Cars, SCCA Barber Dodge Pro Series, IMSA Exxon Supreme GT,
SCCA World Challenge, IMSA Bridgestone Super Car,and Neon Celebrity
Challenge.

Off-track activites will include the 1995 MoPar Expo, New England's

Chrysler-powered vehicles on display.

hidden in this release is some other interesting news. The Barber
Pro Series, formerly using SAAB turbos for power, will switch to the
normally aspirated Dodge V6 beginning in 1995, and the series apparently
will have an SCCA sanction instead of IMSA.
