| Let's start with the most impressive and fastest production supercar
Jaguar XJ220
History
- first shown at Birmingham auto show, late 1988
- pure 'show car', no intention to ever produce it
- fitted with 7litre V12 and 4WD
- long wheelbase
- study by Jim Randle, body designed by Geoff Lawson
- based on lots of enthusiastic potential 'customers' reactions, John Egan
takes decision to build the XJ220 in 1989
- planned limited production (220)
- during H2 of 1989 the XJ220 is fully redesigned
- V12 is replaced by the 3.5litre twin-turbo V6 as used in the XJR11
- RWD only
- shorter wheelbase
- planned production 350
- prototypes are tested in Europe and in the USA
- test drivers: Andy Wallace and John Nielsen
- performance measured with protos in the USA
- top speed 342kph
- 0-60mph <4sec

You forgot to mention it's general handling characteristic - Oversteer.
Saw a review of 'Top Gear' over Christmas, which included an article
when Tiff took one of these around a circuit earlier in the year
(I didn't see the programme first time round).
Certainly an impressive vehicle, and so was Tiff's driving whilst
commentating with an on-board camera. Narrative went along the lines
of "braking into ??? bend, 4th gear, through the apex, power out,
bit of oversteer, up through the gears, braking, changing down for
?? bend, powering through, more oversteer, correcting that, and
more oversteer going through next bend..."
All this at whatever speeds he was reaching, and he didn't appear
to be driving like a real hooligan.

| The car that Tiff drove was an XJR15 not an XJ220. The XJR15 was more of a
road legal race car than a pure 'for the public' production car.

>>acceleration, braking, cornering capabilities, uses some sort of high tech,
I would be tempted to include the Group B vehicles in this list.
Not all of them, but some certainly deserve inclusion.
As for the 300kph speed, that would depend on gearing.
Of course, the road-going versions aren't up to the performance
of the rally specials. The difference here varied a lot according
to the manufacturer. I believe the 205T16 road version wasn't
really all the hot at all, whereas the comp. version certainly was...
How about the Lancia Delta S4 ? An amazing engine configuration
could probably count as 'high tech'.

Sure made a good noise under full bore acceleration (the only way it
was ever used).

| Well, they did not show the McLaren F1 in action (on the track) but the
car was introduced at the classy SPORTING with dinner, etc ... At
midnight the car appeared in the middle of a cloud of smoke, etc ...
Everything was done like for the Lamborghini Diablo 2 years ago. But I
was not invited this time so I read it in my favorite auto mag.
As expected the McLaren road car is based on:
- light weight
- rear wheel drive (no 4WD)
- BMW 6ltr V12 with special computer, producing 550bhp peak
- carbon shell, very long wheeldrive
- all weight contained within the 4 wheels
- 3 seats with driver in the middle, passenger seats apart
Production will start in 1993, build rate 50 per year

| .14 - light weight
Proto weighs around 1000kg.
Body designed by Peter (?) Stevens, who was responsible for the
beautiful Lotus Esprit and Lotus Elan.
The McLaren F1 road car uses very sophisticated internal airflows to
reach the brakes, the oil and water radiators, the engine inlet pipes,
etc ...
Gordon Murray was not too interested in drag coeff which should be
around .34 but he wanted a very agile car hence the perfect weight
distribution.
Luggage space ? yes, behind the side panels just infront of the rear
axle.

Is that 100 (i.e. 160 kph) or 160 mph? Actually thinking about it, its got to
be 100 mph or else it would be on the start-line at Santa Pod!

| The ultimate measure is something like: 0-200kph-0 or 0-160mph-0 which
gives a good indication on both acceleration and braking power.
Another one is : how fast will a car lap at Monaco, Silverstone, etc
compared to a F3 and a F1 ?
The McLaren seems to be well thought for ultimate circuit performance.
I'd like to see a comparison with a F3.

punished further, his embarrasment will be enough! I bet it will. No
way will he live that one down!
Apparently the damage is not bad, a few hole in the carbon fibre and a
boken oil cooler. I suspect the car will still be there.
