1247.0. "Help requested with motoring quizz" by VOGON::DAWSON (Turn ignition on - Turn brain off!) Fri Oct 05 1990 10:14

I am trying to answer the clues to a Radio Times competition so my
wife can win us a new car! I can't make it out at all.... If anyone
would like to help, please feel free to do so.

The clue that really bugs me is a photo of a moustacheoed and
bearded gentleman in "non-modern" dress with the caption : "Propulsion
Pioneer - petrol engines rely on his invention."

I had though the answer to this was obviously Karl Benz but you
have to take the first letter from each answer (there are 8 questions)
to form an anagram of a motoring term.

    	The letters I have so far are T H S (or L) E P T T and B
(possibly). I cannot make this even faintly resemble a motoring term.

    	Any offers???

    Colin

Given the layout of words in .2, even I worked that one out!

What is the prize, by the way?

Don't tell him, he may enter, and that'll reduce everyone else's
    chances :-).

Thanks to those of you who have helped my wife win a Mini Cooper!!! You
could always dash round to the paper shop and buy a copy of last week's
Radio Times.... I thought the use of the christian name for Herr Benz
(I presume it was he) was a bit naff!!

You mean you've gone for the Cooper? Surely you'd have been better off
going for the Rover 216 GTi - selling it and buying a Mini. The Rover's
worth about 4,000 more than the mini - that'd give you all that nice
cash to play around with.

You could have had the Cooperisation kit for the Cooper too!

That'd make the new Cooper a match for the original 'S' then.

The mini on offer has already been "Cooperised" (ie twin SUs, bigger exhaust,
etc, etc). That's why it's called a cooper...

Yes, but John Cooper offers a Rover-approved, kit (for a smallish amount)
which ups the performance of the Cooper (which is pretty sluggish
compared with other 'hot' small cars) to the level of the Cooper S
which is a more presentable (and inspiring) level for a modern sports
    saloon.

Apparently there was some emission problem with fitting this kit on
the basic Cooper. Anyone know what? Perhaps you loose the cat?

The John Cooper kit is, at the moment ONLY for converting the 1000cc
engine. I phoned Cooper Garage last week and they're still waiting for
Rover approval! It'll knock down the 0-60 time to about 8.5 seconds
apparently. They're also experimenting shoving a turbo in there but
that'll mean mod'ing the bulkheaD. That'll be fun!!
