434.0. "RoSPA and I.A.M. info" by MARVIN::COCKBURN (Craig, PSI-PSG/WACE) Thu Jan 05 1989 19:15

Hi there,
Call yourself a good driver? Now's your chance to find out.
RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) are running a
series of lectures at Reading University starting next week. These
lectures are aimed at improving all aspects of advanced driving
techniques, the theory being taken from the police driver training
manual 'Roadcraft'. Classes run for about 10 weeks, and once they
are over you have the chance of going out for some practical
demonstrations and instruction by a qualified member of RoSPA.
The enrolment evening is on Wednesday, January 11 at Lecture
theatre 109 in the Palmer buildings of Reading University.

The object is to achieve a high standard of safe and responsible
driving through learning the advanced techniques of the system,
culminating in taking the RoSPA advanced driving test. This is
graded at three levels. If you pass at levels 1 or 2, then your
pass certificate is good for three years. If you pass at level 3
then it is only good for one year. A pass at level 2 is roughly
equivalent to passing the I.A.M. (Institute of Advanced Motorists)
driving test, which has more of less the same objectives as RoSPA.

There is a monetary inventive for this too, a number of insurance
companies offer reduced car insurance for someone who has
passed one of these tests as members have considerably fewer
accidents than the general motorist and are so considered a lower
risk. This will more than offset the course cost of (I think) 12.

For more details on RoSPA, contact S.Pearce on 0735 29 2718

(details taken from todays Reading Standard)

434.12What about the next course?CRATE::WHITTINGTONSnarling on both tiny cylindersWed Jan 03 1990 12:0815
Since my 1-day "skillful driving" course, I am determined to become a
better driver. I feel I am already improving, just from that one day.
But it is a big eye-opener and I know I have a long way to go.
I would like to pass an advanced driving test and I like the idea of
    graded passes that RoSPA have.
So, here I am willing to get stuck in. Only challenge is - our family
life is hectic at present (wife is studying full-time, day and night)
which means I would rather get stuck in around the summer time.

My main 2 questions are - Is there a course planned for later in the
year? Are the sessions always on Wednesdays (not a good day for our
committments). If nobody has the answer, who should I contact? Are the
secretaries names/numbers the same as earlier in this note?

You could always try BSM. I did my advanced training for IAM with them very
successfully. Need to pick your instructor with care though .....
434.14RoSPA in ReadingMARVIN::RUSLINGMicroServer Phase V Session ControlWed Jan 03 1990 16:1114
RoSPA in Reading run one course a year starting in a few days. If you want
to enrol, then just go along. The dates are given a couple of notes back.
Last year they mostly stuck to the dates given, I think we ended up with one
lesson on a Tuesday. IAM don't have the lectures (which, basically, take you
through the police driving manual), so they may be more convenient for your
busy lifestyle. Sounds like mine, too many hobbies and too little time. I
believe that the tests are roughly the same, however, the grading and test
report is much more comprehensive with RoSPA.

I would recommend either course, driving well is does not neccessarily mean
slowly or boringly. It means being more aware of your surroundings and more
in control of your car...

434.15Revised IAM manualSHAPES::LOUGHLINIColonel StackThu Jan 04 1990 12:2010
I note in this month's Milestones (IAM magazine) that IAM have
produced an updated Advanced Driving Manual costing 6,50 pounds.

Has anyone had a chance to review it yet in terms of new/revised
information compared to the previous revision.

    	Is it worth 6,50 pounds?

See Bill Betts for information about this one - he's done the course. Judging
by his driving and other members of the HPC club (you can only join after you've
done the course) - it's a very good course. The course is advertised in the
motoring press.

Caterham require you to take the High Performance Course (HPC), run
under the direction of John Lyon (overall winner in the Caterham
    Super Seven Championship).

Various courses are available, ranging from the 1/2 day first drive
(about 100) to the High Performance Course itself (expensive). The
course aims to set the highest standards of roadcraft, and those
who drive to a high standard throughout the 2 day course will be
recommended for membership of the High Performance Club. Courses
in racecraft and further awards (eg. night driving) are available
    to members.

Drop round if you want a look at the brochure...
