Actually, if I remember rightly it was'nt just any old chainsaw cod

Spinal Tap. Wasp live shows would also act as a vehicle for Mr
Lawless' "New Man" sensitivities. This would involve Lawless
(what a name) whipping a naked female strapped to a rack with a

Morning,
Do you listen to JJJ the public broadcasting station, when I was
in Australia it was undoubtedly the superior radio station. The depth
and breath of music not to mention one particular totally of
the planet DJ " Maaaaaaynard", broadened my music sphere considerably.
Unfortunately there was a major clear out of the radicals Amanda
Collinge, Biggsy etc when I was there. Sad indeed that in a public
station commercialism has crept in.
One rather amusing incident and one which perhaps set the tone for
the entire station is when, during industrial action regarding the
freedom of speech in the context of the right to play NWA's "Fu*k the
Police". The station staff simply played NWA's "Express yourself" over
and over again ad infinetum (sp).
Listening to Triple J, should keep you in touch with the better
aspects of European, American, African, and obviousily OZ/NZ music.
Are an Aboriginal band called Scrap Metal from Broome, West
Australia still on the go ?

Def Leppard, love 'em or hate 'em, may write cheesy lyrics, but they're
making music for a market, somewhere, which is more than old Greasy

| Well, it seems as though soon it will be a case of the Last Last
Night on Top of the Pops as speculation suggests that this
Thursday eveining institution will be subject to the director's
chopper (oo-err!).
The demise of the 7" single and it's sales, the public's and
especially "the kids" changing attitudes to pop culture; the
way they buy it and the tastes they have, has obviously had a
profound effect on a show based, initially on the sales of
singles. TOTP more recently adapted it's format to cater for
increasing public demand for long playing CDs/Tapes/Vinyl so it
remains to be seen whether the show expands that feature to occupy
more programme time.
I personally feel it's had it's day. The name lends itself more
to an era when 7" singles were shifted in their hundreds of thousands
by an assortment of singles groups to a younger buying public where
Pop and music culture played a bigger part in their lives. The late
80's, 90's obsession with "lifestyle" and the fact that each
successive generation improves on the last in terms of choice
(Television, video, computers, game consoles...) has proved a
distraction to the position that three minutes of black plastic once
enjoyed. Also people are now more likely to go out and buy the new
Simply Red or Michael Jackson album rather than buy the single as
sales have shown.

I don't know that one Paul. I'm not saying TOTP has lost it's
influence on the buying public but in order to get on the programme
you really don't need to sell as many records as you used to. As a
result the charts IMHO have become more interesting with a lot
more appearances by growing indie (label or attitude) bands with
a good core of fans. 10-15 years ago you'd need a good 150,000
in sales to get a number one, nowadays I'd be surprised if band
need half of that amount.

| It was interesting to hear Pete Waterman's comments on
TV am the other morning.
Major labels release singles from albums. Hence most
singles released by known artists are available on
albums so the public buy the albums. This was not the
case years ago. The Beatles released singles that
weren't on albums, forcing serious fans to buy the singles
and the albums.
Nowadays the dance bands that can't get it together
enough to release an album just release singles. Since
this is the only way of getting the music, a lot of
dance music gets into the charts.
Makes sense to me.

997.37 | | JURA::PELAZ::MACFADYEN | All I want is all I want | Mon Aug 03 1992 16:38 | 16 |
| As an only occasional visitor to Britain these days, TOTP is essential
viewing. It does seem to show the music that people are actually listening
to. It and the ITV Chart Show.
And I can't see the demise of the single, no matter what medium it apppears
on. Record company marketing is tied to hit tunes. That's what videos are
for. And single tunes hit the mood of the moment better than an album ever
can. How often have you bought an lp on the strength of a single and found
that the single was the only bit worth listening to?
So I'd be sad if TOTP died. But I think there's plenty of room for it to
start featuring records from some of the specialised charts that exist
these days, much like the Chart Show does.

I think this was the subject of a bit of legal action pressed on the

publisher had the rights to use the song, and the Baby D stuff was just

Shame, it was excellent to be able to see such a good free gig locally.
Dr Feelgood and Jah Wobble were the highlights that I got to see over
the past few years in Southsea. It always seemed like a much better
bet to hang around in Southsea supping cheap beer and listening to good
free music than spend a fortune to get pissed on (literally) and
general battered listening to five hours of crap followed by a few good

| Also, I actually watched the Michael Jackson video last night on Totp.
I've not heard the song before, it doesn't have much tune does it? I
don't know if the video is worth all that money, or what it has to do
with the song, but I like the 'look' of it, all that harsh black n
white, and the hair/eye make up on the girl in the video is quite
effective.

errr...Janet Jackson, Mike. Janet Jackson.
She looked flippin' awful in that video. I find it hard to believe that he
couls have wasted 6million on that...
I still think that Suede's video for "The Wild Ones" was better 8-) Jackson is
an absolute freak. Like I said yesterday (somewhere), he scares me, cos he
doesn't look human. Yeuch...
As for Michelle Gayle, she's just a mindless tart. Ignore her.

interesting though..but Michael certainly doesn't look normal...

out..that Mark was "losing" it, nervous breakdown and had called Gary
an arrogant B****d. All of which may be true but knowing TT they
wouldn't want to do a Robbie and start whining about it.
they've always been a bit touchy, feely though, so it's not much of
shock and doesn't indicate their sexuality in any way :-) They are

| Well, last night I decided I would try and watch Top of the Pops. I
missed the beginning, so I have no idea who that Cher-wannabe
presenting was
an exclusive presentation of George Michaels new song? Should have
been exclusively presented to the dustbin. Talk about a triumph of
form over content - tuneless, bland, drivel that only goes to prove he
has no ideas in his head. He wrote some cracking pop tunes ten years
ago, but this was a complete insult. And what a waste of an expensive
video. Complete garbage that can only appeal to people with an IQ
smaller than their shoe size.
And it was followed by The b****y Cranberries. The sight of Delores
'look at the size of my willy' Riordan makes me want to strap on my
walking boots and give her a serious kicking.
And as for The Cure - God knows I worship Robert Smith to the tips of
his pinky toes, but this is a half formed tune that sounds like a left
over from the KM3 sessions. You know someone is on the way out when
they have to add that special 'Tijuana' feel - eooh eooh eooh indeed.
I switched off after a few seconds of the No 1, more bland drivel.
Sorry.

| I'd heard earlier in the day what the line-up was and decided not to
bother. I did have the TV on from about 7.15 but I was busy and not
really paying much attention. I agree with you about Dolores, she
sounds like a poor (wo)man's Feargal Sharkey with the wobbly voice.
As for the Cure, I can take them or leave them, after last night's
performance of that awful song, I think I'll leave them.

| Great! more people who hate the Cranberries. That performance last
night was incredible, what a load of (expletive deleted), the fact that
that is in the charts, is to me, mind-blowing. You might hate Mike
Oldfield, but at least you don't have to hear his records all day on
the radio, and constantly see him on TOTP.

re : George Michael- vid is obviously an attempt at dragging people's
attention off a boring, mindless ditty.
TOTP was great a few months back for a while but has now gone downhill
rapidly. There seemed to be a couple of months before/after Xmas where
there was loads of good stuff in the charts, my bulging record cabinet
and shrinking wallet could hardly keep up, now there's not much around
and TOTP seems to be reflecting that

The WildeHearts were first on (I think ?)... due mainly to some pretty
good lighting Ginge looked like a cross between his usually manic self,
and an extra from 'Lost Boys', something happened at the end of the

just a fan from abroad who's been pestering the ToTP production team
for months/years, by phone, mail and fax, on the basis that she loves

guest presenter pulls out (on Tuesday?) so she gets the call. On the
