It's surprising that it's taken this long for an ABBA note to
materialise. I could enter thousands of notes thousands of lines
long on how wonderful they were, but I just ain't got the time.

On both counts (Bunnymen and Beatles) there's technically only 3
left because of some minor point called death. As far as I know
all four members of ABBA have thus far avoided motorcycle fatalities
and assassination in usual keeping with their professionalism. The
sort of pop group mother would like to meet.

Awwwwwwww, come on.
The most exciting death that an ABBA member could hope for is death
from excess sugary and sweetness!!
I'll come clean and admit I went through an ABBA phase, but by the time
this dreadful production appeared they had lost any appeal they may
have once had. A viewing of this movie is likely to reinforce the feeling
that Punk really was LOOOOOONG overdue!

Let's face it, we've all been through an Abba phase. It's nothing to be
embarassed about, this is the 90's after all.
Though not exactly Abba, how 'bout 'dem Army Of Lovers? A gal and 2 goons from
Stockholm (I think) who are so camp they make Julian Clary look like Arnold
Schwarzenegger. None of them play any instruments on their records, yet they're
still making possibly the best of that gay disco sound around. Wierd. Look

It's also likely to reinforce the feeling that the works of
Rotten, Strummer, October, Hell, Idol & James, Weller, paled
into insignificance alongside the real protest anthems of the
time i.e., "Money, Money, Money" and "Fernando." Swap the sound
of the Westway and the Bromley contingent for the Pop sensibilities
of Polar Studios, Stockholm; the real sound of the suburbs. All
credit to Costello though who later covered "Knowing Me, Knowing

of the 70's you have omitted to mention the sputum inducing "Thank you

I think you may find that most of the people in their twenties don't
regret liking ABBA, but regret following fashion and rejecting ABBA
when they ceased to be popular. Most geriatrics over twenty become more
objective and less concerned with fashion. Well, maybe not most, but a
good percentage. With age comes a pig-headed tendency to judge things
on their own merits rather than succumb to peer and media marketing
pressure.
Of course I may just be a boring old f*rt wittering on in his dotage...

Well, I may have started this train of thought with my comments and
I humbly apologise for regretting liking ABBA (Did I really say that?).
What I'd say now is that when I was 12 I thought ABBA were great (and
indeed compared with much of the competition they were), but most
people's tastes change over time and I find ABBA's records (especially
their later recordings) horribly twee and just a little pretentious
now.
I don't think it was a change of fashion which swayed me away from
them. I think it was a case of me growing up and them growing overblown
and self-adulent!

Well I'd hardly describe Abba and the Beatles as similar in musical
impact, but...
ABBA _did_ write good commercial, pop songs with no pretentions, but
(as your note implies) like the Beatles definitely strayed away from
this form of music in their later years. In the case of Lennon and
McCartney drugs seem to be to blame, quite what ABBA were on is
anyone's guess? OD'd on eyeshadow perhaps?

| I knew there was an ABBA note in here somewhere, and that nice Mr
Fiddler told me to start cluttering up this topic.... ;-)
ABBAmania, on my part, continues unabated. I can sing Waterloo in
French, Ring Ring in German, and I'm mastering parts of Ring Ring and
Waterloo, and all of Honey Honey in Swedish. I can also sing Chiquitita
in Spanish but I do not sing in public, lucky public.
But it's hilarious how songs get translated into other languages. You
have to use some poetic licence so that the words will continue to
rhyme and scan. The best example of this is Ring Ring. The last few
lines of Ring Ring in English are:
And I sit all alone impatiently
Won't you please understand the need in me?
Oh-oh, ring, ring, why don't you give me a call?
The Swedish version is as follows:
Om jag fick en signal, tog jag ett sprang
Hjartat gjorde en volt, ding-dong, bing-bong!
Om du ring, ring, ringde en endaste gang!
I love the "ding-dong, bing-bong" bit. Cracks me up everytime I hear
it.
